Who else thinks that the first garth ennis/steve dillon minseries relased a couple years ago would make a kick ass movie?

I just realized I'm a complete dork.  You ever have moments like that?

I do, all the time.

I didn't like that miniseries, though.  It had a few good elements, but overall...I don't know, I stopped liking Ennis's writing after about the fourth Preacher collection came out. It just became sort of tired at a certain point.

Thomas Jane will be a great Punisher. Anybody remember one of his early American roles, as the peep show victim in The Crow 2? He's come along way from that graphic masturbation scene...

That looks pretty cool. I think the T-shirt will look cooler when it's a bit tattered, though. It looks a little too custom made. And Thomas Jane looks a little too constipated.

Have they already started production? I know there's going to be a teaser attached to Hulk, but I figured it would be one of those logo teasers with no actual footage.

EDIT: Ok, just checked out AICN and got the scoop. I forgot Jonathan Hensliegh was directing this. Uh oh.

Thats one cool pic. I'm suprised they didn't dye his hair black or something. I have no doubt that Jane will kick ass in this movie (Jane sounds damn sissy by itself), he kicked ass action-wise in 'Deep Blue Sea' and Todd Parker is just soooo cool.

I don't know. I've got some reservations about the look. Why the hell does the Punisher wear a screen printed t-shirt? Shouldn't the skull be some type of body armor or at least embossed slightly like the comics? Hell, even Batman has an embossed logo. I'm not saying make him utterly unrealistic by plastering him with armor and padding, but don't make him look like he walked into Hot Topic to buy his clothes.

The outfit is fine. The only reason it may seem not as intimidating or dark as expected is all due to how the picture was taken, which is just a basic pic of him in it. When the film is released though and the look of the movie is shown in tone with the character, the results should be much different.

its not that it doesnt look intimidating or dark -- the quality of the outfit looks like a halloween costume that a 7 yr old boy would wear -- im curious if this is even a production still, or just some sort of pre productions screen test, hopefully the latter of the two is the case.

John Travolta is The Punisher Villain!

Variety says that Artisan Pictures and Marvel Studios have cast John Travolta to play the lead villain opposite Thomas Jane in The Punisher, with Jonathan Hensleigh directing his own script.

The comic book adaptation is the tale of an FBI undercover agent who, just as he's completed his last mission that will lead to a cushy desk job, sees his family slaughtered. He becomes single-mindedly determined to exact revenge. Travolta plays Howard Saint, a former underworld figure who goes straight but returns to old habits after his son is slain. The two men square off against one another.

August 2, 2003 -- Principal photography begins today on "The Punisher" it was announced by Artisan Pictures President of Production Richard Saperstein. Marvel's unstoppable vigilante THE PUNISHER hits the screen in a new action thriller that introduces a comic book hero unlike any other. The Punisher brings to the screen one of Marvel's top-selling solo comic books and a marquee character whose popularity parallels that of Marvel stars X-Men, Spider-Man, and the Fantastic Four. The Punisher walks through the world we all know, a world darkened by war, crime, cruelty, and injustice. He has no superpowers to battle the evil he sees - only his fierce intelligence, his years of combat experience and, above all, his iron determination to avenge those wronged by society's villains. The Punisher marks the directorial debut of Jonathan Hensleigh, renowned screenwriter of genre blockbusters The Rock, Armageddon and Die Hard: With a Vengeance. Thomas Jane (Dreamcatcher,*61, Deep Blue Sea) stars in the title role, squaring off against superstar John Travolta (Pulp Fiction, Face/Off) as the story's formidable villain. Co-starring are Rebecca Romijn Stamos (X-Men, X-2: X-Men United) as a woman climbing back from a troubled past, Laura Harring (Mulholland Drive) as Travolta's vengeful wife, and Samantha Mathis (American Psycho) as The Punisher's wife.

Thomas Jane is a versatile actor with a wide range of strong performances to his credit. Jane can currently be seen in the Warner Bros.' film, Dreamcatcher, starring alongside Morgan Freeman and can next be seen in the title role of Stander for director Bronwen Hughes. Jane starred opposite Cameron Diaz in Columbia Pictures' The Sweetest Thing. Prior to that, Jane starred as legendary baseball player Mickey Mantle in HBO's acclaimed film 61*. Additional credits for Jane include roles in Lions Gate's Under Suspicion, Warner Brothers' Deep Blue Sea, 20th Century Fox's The Thin Red Line and New Line's Boogie Nights.

A proven megastar with over forty films to his credit, John Travolta has starred in some of Hollywood's biggest blockbusters and earned critics' praise for several commanding performances. He has garnered two Academy Award Best Actor nominations -- for his memorable performances as a hit man in Pulp Fiction and white suited disco hustler in Saturday Night Fever - and received multiple Golden Globe Award accolades including winner in the Best Actor, Musical/Comedy for Get Shorty. Additional credits include roles as a free spirited archangel in Michael and as an ordinary man bestowed surreal powers in Phenomenon. He can next be seen opposite Joaquin Phoenix in the upcoming film Ladder 49 for Buena Vista Pictures.

Romijn-Stamos is a talented actress who continues to turn in impressive performances in her films. She recently completed shooting Godsend opposite Robert De Niro and Greg Kinnear. Recently Romijn-Stamos co-starred in the blockbuster Marvel action sequel X2. Romijn-Stamos' previous credits include Femme Fatale opposite Antonio Banderas, Rollerball, opposite Chris Klein and LL Cool J, a role opposite Al Pacino in Simone, and the hugely successful X-Men.

Writer and Director Jonathan Hensleigh has written some of the genre's most notable action films including The Rock, Armageddon, Jumanji and Die Hard: With a Vengence. Hensleigh also executive produced Armageddon as well as Gone in Sixty Seconds and Con Air.

Avi Arad is President and CEO of Marvel Studios. Following the record-breaking success of the box office smash hit, Spider-Man (Columbia Pictures), and the establishment of two more proven franchises in his first Marvel features - Blade (New Line) and X Men: The Movie (Twentieth Century Fox) - Arad has numerous film projects based on Marvel super heroes in various stages of development. He has aligned Marvel with several prominent studios to produce full-feature films including: Twentieth Century Fox (X-Men 2, The Silver Surfer, Fantastic Four), Columbia Pictures (Spider-Man 2), Sony Pictures (Ghost Rider), Universal Studios (The Hulk, Namor, Prime), New Line (Iron Man), Dimension (Werewolf By Night, Dr. Strange), Artisan Entertainment (The Punisher) Paramount (Deathlok), and New Regency (Daredevil). His reputation has attracted some of Hollywood's most prestigious directors (i.e. Sam Raimi, Ang Lee and Bryan Singer) and writers who are helping translate the ever-popular Marvel super heroes for the big screen.

Gale Anne Hurd recently produced the epic fantasy-adventure, The Hulk. Hurd has produced such box office hits as Armageddon, Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, The Ghost and the Darkness, The Relic and Dante's Peak, and served as an executive producer of this summer's Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.

Helmer Had Punisher Issues

Jonathan Hensleigh, writer-director of the upcoming film The Punisher, told SCI FI Wire that he doesn't condone the brand of vigilantism on view in the Marvel comic book on which his film is based. "It sort of runs counter to my politics," Hensleigh, a former lawyer, said in an interview. "I believe that if you're aggrieved that you should call law enforcement and have the person arrested and prosecuted."

Frank Castle (Thomas Jane), the central character in The Punisher, takes matters into his own hands when his family is murdered. He transforms himself into The Punisher, a gun-toting judge, jury and executioner who sets his sights on a particularly formidable villain, Howard Saint (John Travolta). Hensleigh, best known for writing The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, Jumanji and Armageddon, makes his directorial debut with The Punisher, which hews closely to Garth Ennis' "Welcome Back, Frank" comic series.

"I had to ask myself intellectual questions like, 'To what extent do crimes against a person become so unconscionable, so heinous, that even a person who does not believe in vigilantism can resort to vigilantism in a more just way?'" Hensleigh said. "That was the equation for me. I told Marvel that I didn't just want to do a revenge story, that I wanted to do the mother of all revenge stories. I wanted to ramp everything up. I can't really go further without doing spoilers here. The underlying events that give rise to Frank Castle's vigilantism are not from the comic. I invented a lot of that. I made it a lot worse."

Ultimately, Hensleigh acknowledged, The Punisher is a revenge picture. "There's no way around that," he said. "That is the way that The Punisher was originally created by Marvel, and this is certainly part of the DNA of Garth Ennis' treatment of The Punisher. If you are going to be in any way faithful to the underlying material you have to go down that road, and you have to embrace it." The Punisher will be released on April 16.

ACTOR THOMAS JANE TALKS "THE PUNISHER"

Apparently, actor THOMAS JANE believes its best not to take the whole family to the new comic book based film “THE PUNISHER,” when it opens in April.

“It's gonna be really dark, really bloody and pretty violent," Jane told MTV.

Jane, who admits in the interview that he’s been a life-long fan of the comic books, was hesitant at first to take the role of the famous comic book vigilante.

"I just wanted to make sure we had the right take on it … that it was going to be rated R and we were able to do some of the graphic, violent, horrible stuff Frank Castle is famous for," Jane said.

....in a Naked Lunch kind of way.......or "toss'n the salad in a jail cell"  kind of way....?

In a "poke a shirtless guy in the back with a popsicle while burning a piece of steak with a blow torch" kinda way.

Discussing this film is a little bit like discussing a piece of shit floating in the toilet.

It's a piece of shit!

It is an absolute piece of shit. But the pure humility of the film for poking fun at itself through out the movie and the kindness it had in not being over an hour and a half made me really enjoy it. Plus, Thomas Jane and John Travolta were perfect for their roles. Its an easy film to watch and agree that it sucks but enjoy it as well.

I liked this film, but felt that the neighbor characters got in the way of the overall story, and didn't really seem to serve a purpose. I really enjoyed the opening act of what sets off the revenge, and was really glad to see a "cop" wife who supported her man and what he does, rather than get angry at him for what he does. I liked Jane and Travolta, who can play a great villian, but he wasn't given much to do here.

Man, this movie was bad.  It wasn't even depressing, it was just dull.  The action wasn't all that exciting, and the plot is the basic revenge story we are familiar with.  The only scene that I cared for was the fight with the Russian.  Most of the humor with the neighbors was flat, and this film looked like a paycheck for John Travolta.  I haven't looked at my watch during a movie in a long time, but I looked down about 4 times.

The Punisher

I remember when an "Extended Director's Cut" actually meant something back in the days of laserdisc. Much like everything else related to the DVD phenomenon, this too has become the de-rigueur marketing tool. Aintitcoolnews reports that Lions Gate is planning to relieve you of your cash with a double-dip re-release of The Punisher. Appearing at the Wizard World comic convention in L.A., artist Tim Bradstreet mentioned that "The Punisher: Director's Cut" DVD is in the works and will add backstory and whatnot, including scenes of Frank Castle during wartime. Bradstreet goes on to say that none of these scenes were originally shot, so the actors will be filmed on a green screen stage with backgrounds added digitally. Presumably this all will take place during the upcoming production of the sequel. The extended DVD most likely will be released with the marketing push for "The Punisher 2."

Jane on Punisher 2
"There's so much new ground to be broken."

Sci Fi Wire caught up with actor Thomas Jane who spilled a few beans about The Punisher 2. Jane is tipped to reprise the title role for the follow-up, which sounds much further along in the development process than previously thought.

"I've been in the gym for seven weeks now," Jane informed Sci Fi Wire. "I've already put on 12 pounds of muscle. They want to start going before the end of the year. Ideally I'd like to see the film come out in the fall of 2006, but I don't have any control over that."

So what type of film would Jane like Punisher 2 to be?

"There's so much new ground to be broken. The potential for The Punisher — especially when it comes to the real juicy stuff — should go more in the direction of a gritty, urban street drama like Taxi Driver rather than a glossy, fantasy direction like the X-Men [films]."

the more i think about it the more i believe thomas jane will become the next dolph lungren....and before you laugh at me and call me a fucking piece of shit pussy..let me explain some.....in boogie nights when he played todd parker...it reminded me of a dolph lungren character but written with a hotty pta twist.....now look at the punisher and stander..basically, there just current dolph lungren fluff....i think thomas jane actaully looks like lundgren too.....and didnt dolph play the "original" punisher?....... we need a new cheesy c-movie type star to fill the void that lundgren left and thomas jane should suffice....

..there are comparisons in both looks and genre....i know that in the last picture that dolph is in front of a mushroom cloud but look closely at this posture and facial expressions....its just like jane is in 'junked'....i could have more proof of this but jane has only began his staring career as lundgren has been at it for a while...just wait and see..

I've been meaning to get my hands on "Stander"
Only plus to The Punisher was Thomas Jane as the Punisher, and I thought the action scene where the Punisher mows down Howard Saint's goons in his nightclub was entertaining. Looking back on the movie, the Punisher could have just invaded the nightclub as soon as he came back into Tampa, and we would have had a good 30 minute movie.

John Dahl in Major Talks for The Punisher 2

Exclusive: It was announced yesterday over at AICN that Thomas Jame will not be returning for Lionsgate's The Punisher 2... today we got more juice for you.

Today Freeze Dried Movies learned exclusively that John Dahl is in major talks to helm the sequel to the 2004 pic, which was one of Artisan's last features before being acquired by Lionsgate. In addition, the script in place now does in fact feature Jigsaw as the killer.

Dahl is best known for Rounders, Joy Ride and upcoming You Kill Me.

In the first film, after his wife and family are killed, G-Man Frank Castle takes it upon himself to distribute punishment to those responsible for the vendetta.
