anybody else getting a little sick with the back-patting shlock that's getting on all our new "special release" dvds? Now when Criterion puts out a disc and calls it a special edition, it fucking well means something. But some of this crap... I s'pose it's because they can hoop 1000 more people into buying it if it has 1 extra 5 minute "behind the scenes" thing that most regular joe folks never even watch. And what's up with some commentaries? "umm, so here, Keanu is tapping his shoe. There's a close up of the shoe. Those are cowboy boots. Keanu's character wears cowboy boots" -- this is actual dialogue taken from the Devil's Advocate comm.
And I'm not talking about the LOTR dvds. That, imo, is all cool, because it's totally different versions of the films, and they do a hell of a good job putting out great packaging and extras. But seriously, if this shit keeps going downhill, I mean it's getting to be a fucking embarrassment...

Has anyone ever seen a normal edition of Saving Private Ryan ? And what's so special about the special edition ?
Quote from: Pas RapportHas anyone ever seen a normal edition of Saving Private Ryan ?
There is no 'normal' edition. It only comes as the Special Limited Editon or the same edition but with a DTS track.

Yeah I always wondered about this same question. If there is only one release of the DVD, what's so special about it? In regards to the JFK, I was wondering if anyone noticed this new special edition is the same as the Olive Stone Collection JFK'.
Quote from: Weirdo1769movieMikeIn regards to the JFK, I was wondering if anyone noticed this new special edition is the same as the Olive Stone Collection JFK'.
It's not entirely the same. The newer edition has the documentary "Beyond JFK" that wasn't on the flimsy snapper case edition.
.hahahahaha.....so true sonowthen et al...about this......
i would like to comment on the unniversial special editions.......if a remeber correcly...and maybe Mac can add to this but unniversal usually slaps "collectors editionn" or "special editionn"...and i think that it offers sh*t...and its misleading........i think this is mainly w/ unniversal though........

Hmm what show is that from?? The Critic, maybe? Nah.
I bought the DVD set and I've been watching nothing but The Critic for the past 2 days. Help me....
It is from The Critic (shocker, I know), but it was in reference to Jay reviewing JFK: the Director's Cut, with, I think it was like "four hours of added footage."

Also just announced from DreamWorks is a new re-release of Steven Spielberg's Oscar-winning war epic Saving Private Ryan, which will get a spiffy new two-disc set on May 25th, just in time for D-Day. The Saving Private Ryan 60th Anniversary Commemorative Edition features a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer and Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 surround tracks on disc one, plus a second disc with the same extras from the previous special edition, including an introduction by Spielberg, the 30-minute documentary Into the Breach, plus production notes, filmographies and theatrical trailers. I love the "Not seen in theaters!!" versions of American Wedding and stuff. They make it sound like we'll get to see anal sex or something and it turns out a stripper shows her breast for like 8.7 extra seconds or something in one sequence.

Really? I thought Smith was the one really good thing in this. It was the completely flat structure and jumbled editing that ruined this one. With a different pace/tone (perhaps by a decent sized 'director's cut'), this could be a much better film.

its just a NEON thing really, i like smith but ...i just didn't like his performance in this film...i believe he's best doing the men in blacks...et al...but i haven't seen 6 degree of sep. yet........its just i think he cant do the comedian/serious actor thing like carrey has mastered.......

Can't say that I agree. I thought it was perfect, especially the pace/tone.
I'm excited about the new DVD upgrade, but I didn't really care for Mann's Directors Cut of "Last of the Mohicans." If you're going to add stuff, at least add some naked chicks. But he took stuff out!

I have to say I like what made it into the movie but coming out of the theatre, I felt like I tuned into a 7 hour movie part of the way in and turned it off before it was over. It should have covered more of Ali's life than just those 10 years. That was what sank the film.
Bring on the HEAT Director's Cut!

It was shot in a documentarian style; a fly on the wall perspective. Documentries usually film a certain lapse of time, hence the pivotal 10 year period in Ali's life. This lapse of time was the most entertaining and story-worthy.
I commend Mann for not filling in the movie with trivial facts like an A&E Biography would do.

I'm glad they didn't go so far as to show him getting diagnosed with Parkinson's; that would have been awful (but might have gotten Will the Oscar). But the film still feels incomplete to me, story-wise.
The fact remains that I don't know much about Ali's life growing up and the one quick shot of him as a kid seeing that picture of Emmett Till just wasn't enough for me to get a sense of who Ali was prior to his fame. When we meet Ali in the film, he's already a contender. Sure, it's a documentary-style film but most docs have narration or interviews that fill in the blanks that the film may have to skip over. What happened on Cassius Clay's road to the big time? That's what was missing from the film, IMHO.
But it's still the best boxing film since Raging Bull.
It's a drop in a bucket compared to the waterfall that was When We Were Kings.
The Forman fight in Ali just seemed like made-for-tv CRAP in comparison.

Some people want the DTS track, but Columbia only offers them on Superbit titles. But at least they did a good special edition instead of putting a trailer for Spiderman 2 and re-releasing the existing disc.

Oh I know what you mean (proud owner of Lawrence of Arabia Superbit) but I think the Superbit should've been released with the barebones edition. It kind of looks silly putting this beside the ultimate deluxe edition... but anyway, that's just me.
I'd like a Super Special Edition of Adaptation, Blade Runner, Apocolypse Now and Bottle Rocket.

The problem with all of the discs that have been mentioned here is that they already had a pretty good edition, Trainspotting doesn't fall into that catagory because the disc that was released was bare bones.

Ah, ah, Explosive
Extended Edition, my friend. This baby is one-of-a-kind!!
I don't know if this specific information has been posted (I know it was posted that Quentin was going to do multiple additions and 2 extra supplemental discs, like the American Pie Series did.) but this is what I read today on digitalbits.com, I couldn't believe that this guy actually said it, so I had to read it twice. Anyway, here's what I read:
(Finally this morning, I've saved the best (or worst) for last. The NY Times has a new story up on how the Hollywood studios are rushing to cash in on the DVD boom. Here's your happy, happy, joy, joy from the article... Miramax is reportedly preparing to release a half-dozen different DVD editions of Kill Bill:
"This is the beauty of having two volumes," said Rick Sands, chief operating officer at Miramax. "Vol. 1 goes out, Vol. 2 goes out, then Vol. 1 Special Edition, Vol. 2 Special Edition, the two-pack, then the Tarantino collection as a boxed set out for Christmas. It's called multiple bites at the apple. And you multiply this internationally." Mr. Tarantino has also cut an alternate version of the movie for Japan.
I'm gonna ask the obvious right now: Can you believe the BALLS required to make a statement like that in public? To a reporter? For a story that people are going to READ?! Do you suppose Miramax planned to let fans of the film know about all this, so they could... oh, I don't know... maybe make informed decisions about which version they want to spend their hard-earned cash on? I can understand the need to put out multiple DVD versions of a film on occasion, but DAMN! A half-dozen different DVD editions, and Tarantino wants to release stand-alone Beneath the Crust-style discs of supplemental materials as well?!)
Jeez...And they wonder why some of us download movies off the web.
Greedy studios make DVDs not so special
Source: Boston Globe
When I received my first DVD player for Christmas in 2001, I did what anyone with such a spanking new high-tech toy would do: I immediately dashed out and bought an armload of my favorite movies on disc. I started with "Blazing Saddles," "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," and "The Great Escape," and by the time 2001 turned into 2002, I had also picked up "Enter the Dragon," "Amadeus," and Akira Kurosawa's "Ran."
I've spent the years since replacing those early acquisitions with newfangled DVD versions of the same movies. As a DVD novice, it never occurred to me that the studios would release multiple versions of the same film.
And I don't just mean full-screen versus wide-screen (letterboxed) formats. I refer to the irritating, increasing tendency of the ever-rapacious movie industry to make a big deal out of releasing a hotly awaited film on DVD, and then months, sometimes years later putting out another version of that movie that's tricked-out with features. Collector's editions give way to special editions, limited editions are replaced by ultimate versions -- all with the intention of wringing more dollars out of consumers.
On the first day of its DVD release, "Kill Bill Vol. 1," Quentin Tarantino's ultraviolent, ultrastylish revenge orgy starring Uma Thurman, sold 2 million copies and made a whopping $40 million. Customers snapping up this fairly bare-bones disc -- in addition to the film, there's only a making-of documentary, a "Vol. 2" trailer, and video from the Japanese all-girl band the 5.6.7.8's, who perform in the film -- probably did so expecting a later version featuring both parts of the film. ("Kill Bill Vol. 2" recently opened in theaters.) But what customers buying the disc didn't know was that Miramax is actually planning six different DVD releases of the "Kill Bill" films.
Here's how Rick Sands, Miramax's chief operating officer, explained it to The New York Times last week:
" `Vol. 1' goes out, `Vol. 2' goes out, then `Vol. 1 Special Edition,' `Vol. 2 Special Edition,' the two-pack, then the Tarantino collection as a boxed set for Christmas," he said. "It's called multiple bites at the apple."
The apple ain't the only thing getting bitten.
It may have taken the studios a few years to recognize the public's embrace of DVDs, but now they're clearly focused on greedily exploiting that desire as much as possible. Studios can now spend as much promoting a film on DVD as for its theatrical run, and the financial benefits can quickly become a bonanza. And movie executives understand that someone willing to buy a movie they've probably already paid $10 to see in a theater wants the best available version of a beloved film. (This is why "The Lord of the Rings" fans who bought the two-disc versions of the first two films turned right around and bought the extended four-disc box sets at twice the price.)
See, it's never been just the much-improved quality of the picture and sound on DVDs that makes them so hot. It's all those cool extras such as full-length commentary tracks from cast and crew members, deleted scenes, outtakes, and behind-the-scenes documentaries. Some also offer interviews with stars and directors on programs such as "Charlie Rose" or appearances from film festivals. Save being on a movie set, it's the most comprehensive way to fully experience a favorite film.
If the studios wanted to be fair (and, of course, there's no indication that they would even know how), they would take their cues from the Criterion Collection, generally recognized as the gold standard for DVD releases. The collection features films from the world's great directors such as Kurosawa, Federico Fellini, and Alfred Hitchcock, and its releases are lovingly restored and usually enhanced with multiple special features. Criterion DVDs tend to be more expensive -- a typical two-disc set runs about $40 -- but it seems worth it because these releases tend to be definitive versions. And Criterion avoids such meaningless terms as "collector's edition" or "special edition," meant to lure customers believing they are getting something extra.
Studio suits would do well to remember the hard lessons learned by the record industry. As CD prices inexplicably increased year after year, some fans turned to peer-to-peer downloading services such as Kazaa and the then-illegal Napster for their music fix. The music industry has been crying foul ever since and suing the very people it wants to purchase its product.
With the "Kill Bill Vol. 1" disc selling so well on its debut day, the studios probably believe they have a green light to continue abusing their customers -- "Hey, no one's making them buy those DVDs," they probably reason. Yet it seems only a matter of time before the public's love of DVDs is poisoned with anger at the studios for exploiting that love for more and more money.
For a lot of DVD releases one probably has to read DVD sites to know whether there is something special coming up. Not everyone is like us, so I don't expect Average Joe to read DVDfile.com every morning. I have a good track record regarding special editions. I skip the original LD transfer rehash DVDs (except for the Bruce Lee set, which were my very first), and even when an SE comes out, I typically wait a while to get it, in case there are transfer issues or another edition is coming. Even if the Kill Bill SEs and mega-box have different extras, I'm not sure I like the films enough to buy all editions.
Yeah, but dvds are usually cheapest right when they come out. Like the pre-orders on Amazon. Pretty much all I spend my money on is dvds, so looking to save $2 a disc really adds up. It's a stupid hassle really, and it's about to get a lot harder once I move to Europe....

Jackson on an Ultimate LOTR DVD Collection
Source: USA Today January 14, 2005
USA Today spoke with "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy director Peter Jackson on the set of King Kong where he revealed that they still want to develop an Ultimate "Lord of the Rings" DVD Collection.
The set will included the three extended versions (not combined into one film) and likely won't arrive in stores for another two or three years.
"I don't want to add more footage," Jackson says. "There's as much in there as we want. Eventually you are just going to go backward and weaken the films." Instead, he would prefer to simply show the unused deleted scenes and explain why they were cut.
Jackson would also like to include feature-lenght documentaries, made by longtime associate Costa Botes, on the making of the movies. "There are no commentary or interviews. It's like a reality TV show," Jackson says.
He adds that the bloopers, or "bleepers" as Jackson calls them, would also be a new feature. They were previously only shown to the major cast members as a farewell tribute after they finished filming.
hahaha you all got FUCKED

I haven't bought them yet.
He's just gunna make "The Hobbit" and release another set around that time.
Hopefully, they'll be nice and release it seperately from the EE's. They were pretty good about the seperate purchase of the box-case for the EE trilogy.
However, I suppose alot will depend on how successful HD-DVD turns out to be.

The only question not answered by the existing docs on the EEs is: What were the dietary habits of each cast and crew member? Literally they left no other stone unturned. What more could we learn from any new documentaries?

Buena Vista and Pixar have announced the release of a Toy Story: 10th Anniversary Edition due on 9/6. Of course, there's just no way that the 2-disc set could top the previous Toy Story: Ultimate Toy Box set, but for those of you wondering, the new release will include audio commentary by director John Lasseter and his creative team (joined by producers Ralph Guggenheim and Bonnie Arnold - likely the same track on the previous DVD), the all-new The Making of Toy Story featurette, deleted scenes, various design and production featurettes and a preview of Pixar's forthcoming Cars. Just how much of this material is new and how much will be recycled from the Toy Box remains to be seen. We'll post more details when we get them.

most of the time the only thing unrated means is that version wasn't given to the mpaa to rate so it is unrated no extra nudity no more cursing just some scene that they added in to sell more dvds :yabbse-angry:

There's a big DVD announcement today: Universal has announced a 15-disc Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection for 10/4 (SRP $119.98 ). The set will include The Birds, Family Plot, Frenzy, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Marnie, Psycho, Rear Window, Rope, Saboteur, Shadow of a Doubt, Topaz, Torn Curtain, The Trouble with Harry and Vertigo, along with a bonus disc of special features (many of the movie discs will feature bonus material as well). We're waiting to see how many (if any) of these films will be remastered on DVD. Vertigo, for example, has been released previously on disc only in non-anamorphic widescreen. We'll let you know when we know.
DVDanswers.com info on the Hitchcock box:
Extras wise, every disc will be identical to those already on the market seperately. However, Universal has now confirmed digital remasters for each of the films too. The only exclusive extra material will be included on the bonus disc - and details have yet to be released on that!
That's a lot cheaper than they were originally, isn't it? I recall buying the box with only (I think) Psycho, Rear Window, The Birds, Man Who Knew..., Topaz, Family Plot, Shadow, and one of the Hitchcock Presents anthologies for $89.99 ON SALE.
I just wish I didn't already own most of those, because that really is a damn good price.
All 14 films in Universal's Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (due on 10/4), will be digitally remastered. The set will be packaged in velvet slip-case, featuring a 36-page collectible book. It will also contain an exclusive bonus disc that contains "showcasing Hitchcock's films, career and legacy."

Niccol Announces Gattaca DVD
Sci-fi film due in a deluxe edition.
During the recent press day for his new film Lord of War, writer-director Andrew Niccol mentioned that efforts recently began on a new edition of his directorial debut Gattaca starring Jude Law and Ethan Hawke. "There is actually, yeah," Niccol said. He went on to express his appreciation for the continued interest that critics and audiences have in the film: "It's kind of interesting because the reviews for a film, the true reviews, are written like five or ten years later, so people are still interested in the movie, or that's my hope."
Niccol said that he has not yet performed a commentary track for the DVD, and like his former Truman Show collaborator Peter Weir, is somewhat reluctant to draw back the curtain on the creative process. "I haven't done [a commentary] yet," he said. "I resist those audio commentaries because they demystify the process, and for some reason I don't like that." Describing its continued relevance, particularly in light of the current debate about stem cell research, Niccol demurred, "I was just interested at the time, and it was one of those issues that occurred to me, but I try not to look back, actually."
The original release of Gattaca featured minimal extra features and bonus materials, including deleted scenes and a short 'making-of' featurette.
No release date has been set for the release of a Gattaca Special Edition DVD.

haha. nice example of using a quote to support your lead.
The official Roger Moore website has indicated that Sir Roger has just begun recording new audio commentary tracks for the seven Bond films in which he starred. His first recording session, for A View to a Kill, was completed this last weekend. Word is, these tracks will be included on new Ultimate Editions of the Bond films set to be released by Sony in 2006 (and no doubt timed to coincide with the theatrical debut of Casino Royale).

Yup. The extras aren't bad, but nothing all that great. You get the history of it, how difficult it was to finance, the casting of Carrey and Daniels (it reminded me how WEIRD a concept that was, since it has felt natural to me after all this time), and a retrospective look at its success. A couple of interesting deleted scenes, including a whole subplot that was removed.
The actual extra scenes in the movie aren't that great, but eh, whatever. If you like Dumb and Dumber, it's worth buying.
yea, i've been holding out to upgrade Dumb And Dumber and Mission: Impossible from VHS. so looks like now/soon is the time.

I think it would be funny if this were somehow the "good cut."
Haggis on the DVD Introduction: "Oh Jesus, you weren't supposed to see that first cut. We cut it as a joke and the studio released it! I feel so awful, especially with all these awards... and now with the Oscars..." and then two months from now, after having won the best screenplay Oscar, Paul Haggis commits suicide.
