this movie kicks ass. it was on IFC last night and it, needless to say, rocked my world. now where the fuck is the DVD?
Lynch is probably going to wait another couple years after the Eraserhead hype has died yet again, and he's finally completed another feature, then he'll charge you an arm and a leg for membership to his website, and then the other arm and a leg for the DVD itself. And while you're watching your shiny new DVD, without your arms and legs, you'll make a great extra for his daughter's highly anticipated Boxing Helena II: Helena Strikes Back.

When you get the black cardboard personalized David Lynch box (I kept mine), and open it to see the Eraserhead box inside, you'll realize that it was the best investment you've ever made. Then seeing the movie and the documentary and flipping through the booklet is just icing on the cake.

now
i think wild at heart is easily lynch's worst film -- besides bobby peru, it's a muddled piece of shit -- i love lynch.
The first time I saw it I didn't like it at all (and I love Lynch too). The second time, I loved it. I think it's so jam packed with different tones...it goes from being hardcore exploitation to fairy tale to realistic drama with such suddenness that its hard to know what to think at first. But now it's one of my favorites of his (along with the rest of his films). The scene with the car accident is one of my favorite stand-alone scenes of all time.
This thread made me want to watch it again, so I popped in my VHS copy. This is by far the WORST VHS I ever purchased. I don't know what the distributor was thinking. It looks like it was recorded in SLP mode, and some of the scenes are 'squished' horizontally so the widescreen image will fit on the TV screen. It's awful. Plus, there's a trailer for 'I Come In Peace' starring Dolph Lundgren. Bring on the Region 1 DVD!!! Now!
yeah, i've only seen it once and i hated it. i thought he was kidding, it felt like a bad lynch soap opera for me. it was laughably bad. i just dont think the movie ever decided what it wanted to be. (i still cant believe he made that AFTER blue velvet.)
I tought it was good, very funny at the ultimate least. I'm kinda biased via Lynch's stuff though

Hey Mac and/or Taz, did you guys have any trouble when you ordered your Eraserhead DVDs? When I click on the Buy button, I get that little Kart animation...but when I go to check out, my cart is empty. I've tried it with other items as well, to no avail. Very very frustrating. Perhaps its a fault of this cursed 56k connection.

I didn't. In fact, I just tried it again right now. I clicked on 'Buy' and got the animation. Then clicked on 'View Cart' and it was in there. I dunno.
Defoe's Bobby Peru is freaking hil-ar-i-us.. He has the funiest lines in that film
Another testament to Lynch's genius
my favorite character is the mother. she nailed it. the scene where she's covered in lipstick is the ultimate.

New Wild At Heart DVDs not Lynch's new transfer
John Neff (of Blue Bob) shed some light on the status of Lynch's new Wild At Heart transfer:
"Dave has not finished the new transfer yet. There was a problem with the IP from the first transfer, and a new one was struck from the camera negative. David is working on that one now. So, anything on the street is not David's 'approved transfer'. It doesn't exist yet."
take that cap down immediately
yeah i thought the transfer was just fine too and ohh man those eighties style heavy rockers playing elvis was just classic.
i love you mog. when does this new wild at heart dvd come out in the US of A?

Finally got my Wild At Heart DVD. Nothing at all extra, but it was cheap.
Slightly disappointed, although ultimately it works. I got a bit impatient with it as it read a bit like a Lynch greatest hits, almost a self-parody. But the Big Tuna sign is brilliant, and the whole concept of Big Tuna just makes me laugh.
Liked Cage's Elvis. And HDStanton, as ever.
Maybe I'm just too steeped in the Fincher aesthetic right now to appreciate it fully, but it is a little too kitsch, kooky rather than weird, for my taste.

Watched Se7en last night, but listened to the commentary for the first time. Really cool. Andrew Kevin Walker is one of my fave screenwriters now.
so, i'd never read all the hateful things on here, but now that i have, i'd like to rub in all of your faces that it IS october and there is NO wild at heart dvd in region 1. so i bought the japanese one from region 2 (which, in actuality, plays in all my players, not just my multi region), b/c that one is ntsc and i wouldn't have to deal with the 25 fps speedup. unfortunately, the one from japan is taken directly from that pal transfer, therefore, everybody moves and talks like a chipmunk, and now i am fucked until whenever they decide to release here in the states. turns out, i think my player compensates for PAL speedup and i should've just gone with the one from england and it would've been better than this one i've got here. the things i get myself into. at least since it's no region i'll be able to sell it on ebay once i find out the REAL release date of the us release.
Wild at Heart US DVD Status
David Lynch is finishing the color timing of the new transfer. The soundtrack will most likely be the original LCRS mix. It seems that Lynch is no longer interested in doing any more 5.1 mixes of his older films. One thing however is that other than a great transfer, unlike MGM's Blue Velvet Special Edition DVD, this DVD will have no extras or documentaries.
If you would like to see MGM make this DVD release a Special Edition like the Blue Velvet Special Edition DVD, send your letters of support to:

i wonder why it's been taking him so long if there are no special things on there. not even a new sound mix. oh well, i don't care as long as i get the movie. thanks for the update, mac.
I am happy yet sad that it is not 5.1......major difference for the most part to me.

Working being done on new Wild At Heart dvd
John Neff posted an update on the work on MGM's new Wild At Heart dvd on the LynchNet discussion board:
"Wild At Heart is being worked on as we speak. David is overseeing a completely new transfer from a newly struck Interpositive. The old print had deteriorated, and he canned the last transfer. Probably will not be a 5.1 soundtrack. I think the feeling at this time is that the original mix should not be messed with, and David will have them use the LCRS (Dolby Surround) mix. Probably the only incentive now for a 5.1 would be to make use of the subwoofer channel, but those chances are dim. As far as I know, there will not be any deleted scenes or any 'extra' cut version. It will be what was distributed theatrically. I heard they were interviewing Harry Dean Stanton and some others for the disc, but I do not know the extent of any extras. If it follows the usual pattern, there will be cast interviews, pieces from the period of release, the trailer, etc. Certainly no commentary from David."

In stores. MGM holds the rights.
This is beautiful news, but I actually kinda wish it was available from his website. It would be great to have all his films in that artsy Eraserhead packaging (although his entire repertoire would then take up something like two or three shelves, and everything would be twice as expensive, but hey...).

Moving on, earlier this week in the daily column, I mentioned that director David Lynch had revealed that his Wild at Heart: Special Edition will be released on DVD later in 2004. We've checked in with our industry sources, and sure enough... MGM is currently planning to debut the title on disc in December, along with a price reduction on Blue Velvet. No word yet on the extras, which are in production as we speak, but you can definitely expect anamorphic widescreen video and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio.
I found this in The Rumor Mill at www.digitalbits.com....
In December, look for Wild at Heart: Special Edition on 12/7/04
MGM Home Entertainment has announced a special edition of David Lynch's Wild At Heart which stars Nicolas Cage, Laura Dern, Willem Dafoe and Crispin Glover. The film will be available to own from the 7th December this year, and should set you back around $24.98. As well as a new digitally remastered anamorphic widescreen transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 track (both of which were supervised by Lynch), the disc will include a brand new thirty-minute making of documentary, an original promotional featurette, extended interviews with the cast and the director and sixty-five animated behind the scenes photos with music.

well, as expected this dvd kicks ass and once again proves that lynch is obviously the greatest director living. and yes, i am serious.
i love the slip case...i love the raised lettering...i love the snakeskin facade...i love the insert which details the realtionships between the characters...i love the amaray keep case...i dont like the cover underneath the slipcase....i love how both this and blue velvet picture a woman in a mans arm...i love the dvd disc art....i love the font they used on the back of the case to describe the bonus features....i love the critic quotes on the back..i dont like the synopsis on the back though. ..and as for the film.......
since i am not one of those fanboys that loves everything lynch does and thinks that he is perfect, i will keep it real for you...i think this film has its flaws more so than even dune...but there are certian scenes in this film that make up for it...after years of watching this thing on shitty vhs..i was expectign to be blown away by a "lynch supervised transfer" and he didnt dissapoint...as with any/mostr films dvd transfer widescreen is the way to go..it makes the experience better, enricher, beautiful...what i liked most abou tthe film is the supporting characters and tthe "what the fuck is this shit?" scenes.
spoooooilerrrrrsssss.s.s....
like when laura palmers mom from twin peaks playing the crippled hitwoman and the reggie guy along with drop shadow[btw, cool mane for a character..and also, a funny ass twin peak character] shoot johnny-that shit was fuckign wicked......its disturbing, sexual, voilent, funny, horrific all at once...and when she starts screaming "fuck me reggie!"...damn that wild.....that is to me key lynch artist but him does that sjit.its awesome.....its creative.......its beautilfully disturbingly strange....its lynch...i love the other scenes with mr. reindeer...like th edinner table scene with the naked chicks in the background.when the camera pulls back and evertything its in scene-it badass to see what he encompasses all in one frame......for the sake of time i will try to keep this brief...but soemthimes i cant help myself........but my favorite scenes in the film involve the nightime scene with sherilynn fenn ......i like the mood it creates..ou ton th edeserted highway, and the wiked game song playign in the background......then seeing the clothes scattered then the car wreck/deasd bodies/fenn and her damaged head.........really good stuff when in motion..........and bobby peru is fuckign hilarious.. ..just everything about the guy..there is more ..but i will also, say fopr thwhat i dont like is that soemtimes the acting is cheesy[dern].and soethigns dotn flow ell. but all is forgiven......and laure derns mother was awesome.just sick shit/twisted........
.and jingle dell..........i wish lynch would use crispian glover more.he right up his alley........thi sand the blackout segment in hotel room prove it.......
and lastly i have got to comment on the fact that lynch seems just liie a cool guy.....no arrogance, he doesnt talk using the pretensious big words and all this pseudo- fake poseur garbage......the guy is just cool man....

This is also the "X-rated" cut.
i tried looking for a little bit but couldn't find anything and now i have to take a shit so i need to type this fast.
anybody know what the music is that's playing when bobby peru makes his first entrance ("perhaps you might picture toto, from the wizard of oz...")? know where i can find it? it's not on the soundtrack. THANKS A BUNCH!
It had been years since I watched this, first time on DVD too. I did friday. I thought there was a lot more sex and boobs, maybe my DVD was one of these censored ones mentionned earlier in the thread???
Bobby Peru rocks, but the 20-30 minutes before he appears are a bit boring. Should've been a tight 90 minutes and not 125ish. The abortion scene is truly disgusting I had drank a lot and smoked a cigar it almost made me throw up. Whenever a film mentions abortion I get twitchy, but when we see it usually I switch it off and make a 1 star review on IMDB. I'm not against abortion it's just I don't like images of it. These pro-life protestors are the worst when it comes to that, god I hate them.
So yeah, I'm still wondering how I rate Wild at Heart in the Lynch top films. Maybe it's second or maybe it's second worst... hard to say
U should watch Lake of Fire
Looks awful... did you see it?
Also have you ever had someone tell you about their abortion like they are talking about what they had for breakfest??? One of my gf's friend is like that. She's the worst. She always talks about periods and menstruations and abortions and pregnancy. Nobody's asking her about it too, she'll just pop it up randomly. I really hate her, but her boyfriend is helping me a lot with the house repairs so I guess she's alright.
Its one of the best documentaries i've ever seen! But not for the squeamish by any means.
Just watched this for the first time in ages and oh my god this is a fun movie! Lynch's decision to use a mix of metal, Elvis, and his own distinctive synthy shit for music was just plain awesome and for me it worked well alongside the whole "in love and out of control" theme of the film. I also thought it was cool to see a bunch of Twin Peaks faces since I just finished the series and those characters are still fresh in my mind. I found it balanced Lynch's inherent strangeness with a strong forward momentum in such a way that the whole thing came off as extremely confident. I think it's the confidence that makes this film so entertaining for me. That, and perhaps the fact that Bobby Peru is pure gold.
I will say that I think I prefer his more challenging films (ie. Mulholland Dr., Lost Highway, Blue Velvet) but I'd have to say this is the one I'll watch the most from here on out, if for no other reason than the difficulty of some of his other work.
There is one thing though...Anyone care to comment on all the Wizard of Oz references/allusions? I couldn't really come to any concrete reasoning in my mind other than that they're both road movies and how the Marietta Fortune character definitely echos that of the wicked witch. But then again, it's David Lynch.
Thank you for bumping this thread. I think this is one of Lynch most unappreciated films and one which deserves a lot more discussion. My thoughts on the Wizard of Oz references is that they're a representation of the conflict of innocence and experience which is present in most if not all of Lynch's films. Here, it's shown that Sailor and Lula indulge in very graphic and pleasurable sex, yet they are still innocent in terms of their world view - they believe they are in a fairy tale fleeing the wicked witch. I think that the mash up of musical styles reflects this too: they love both classical music and Rammstein and both are equally beautiful to them. (Remember too, that Lynch is a big fan of duality and that Wizard of Oz has lots of mirroring and doubling with actors placing dual roles and the two worlds in color and b&w).
I also believe that the consistent references to Christmas are to do something similar. As kids, Christmas is something associated with hope and promise, but in Wild At Heart everything associated with it is sleazy and evil: Marcelles Santos, Mr. Reindeer... Even the anecdote Lula tells of her cousin Dell is centered around Christmas as something which is rooted in childhood innocence but which ultimately take a much darker turn.
very cool. thanks for discussing. after reading your comments I rewatched and I discovered some things. like how the exchanges between Dern and Cage in their hotel rooms, in bed, discussing their lives over cigarettes are some of my favorite in the film. I found their post-sex chit chat to be a real anchor in a film with so much frenzy. Not just the dialouge which is great, but also the way those scenes move along. For instance the one that's shot to have us believe that Sailor and Lula are lying side by side, only to cut to an over head shot revealing they're actually lying opposite one another with their legs intertwined. It was such a simple thing, but I thought that was a very human touch and in a weird way it made me believe those characters and their love. Which was refreshing to see, when so many of Lynch's characters can be so animated and surreal. For me it was a perfect way for Lynch to harbor that innocence you mentioned without compromising any intensity.
This truly is one of his best.
has anybody been going to the lynch screenings at the new beverly? this saturday at midnight, wild at heart will be screening in 35mm for any inclined. the only one i got to catch was FWWM, so glad i did. definitely not gonna make WaH, but maybe one of you can for me.
plus if you go the new beverly and sit towards the front, you'll likely get to hang out with clu gulager, which, fuck, if that's not enticing, i don't know what is.
