The other day i was switching thru channels and saw they were showing that Popeye movie with Robin Williams, and saw that Robert Altman directed it... i was like :o :o :?
Did he become the "ensemble cast" specialist AFTER this, or was this just an "oops" during his career?

It was during his career. But the point is that he makes films other than ensemble pieces. Always has. It is just that his better films usually have ensemble casts...

I've actually been very tempted to check it out. Shelley Duvall's "He Needs Me" is just so fucking great.
