Ultimately I don't think it matters, but...

Thoughts?

Jeremy Blackman

That was always my default take, especially because of the butler's non-reaction. But I want that scene to be real. I don't remember what our consensus was at the time... I think we had a more vigorous debate about water vs. vodka.

This isn't a new theory and, tbh, has crossed my mind in the past.
I remember many critics having their objections with the apparent oddness of the bowling sequence and the (intentional?) switch of tone (I think Daniel has been criticized for overacting, fwiw).
I agree it could be considered an ambiguous resolution (the set design and the violent outbreak also contribute to the Shining influences), I also agree that it doesn't really matter, it's a great ending anyway.

Funny, I've seen the film 5-6 times and I dunno why but I always took that he was drinking alcohol for granted, thanks for that.

I'm sure the butler of Scott Rudin has witnessed more gruesome scenes.   :yabbse-grin:
Ascension.

CAMERA pulls back with AL ROSE coming down the steps...slowly...slowly...revealing to him the horrific scene.

                                                   AL ROSE
                                        Mr. Rudin...

...and sees the glass shattered on the floor...and sees RUDIN...

                                                       AL ROSE
                                        Mr. Rudin... ?

HOLD on AL's face and the reality of this mess...

RUDIN turns around...

                                                   RUDIN
                                        SNAPPLE!!!!!
