Title: JACKIE BROWN
Post by: Rudie Obias on January 10, 2003, 06:45:47 PM
i just bought JACKIE BROWN on dvd and i was surprised when i put it in my dvd player that it didn't play in the widescreen format on my TV.  i then borrowed PULP FICTION and RESERVIOR DOGS from a friend and both movies play in the widescreen format on my TV.  all three movies are in 2:35.1 widescreen.  what's the deal with that?  why won't my JACKIE BROWN play in widescreen?  should i return it and exchange it for a new copy?

I had the same problem.  I kept trying to find it but it was nowhere to be found on the DVD.  The problem is that it says 2.35:1 on the back cover when it talks about widescreen.

I love Jackie Brown.

The little intro. w/ Quentin talking about the Jackie Brown fans was funny. He talked about going into video stores, but do established filmmakers go into video stores? Do you think PTA goes to Blockbuster? I always thought they ordered their shit either off the internet or got free copies somehow. If PTA or Tarantino came into Blockbuster I would shit myself.
Also, do they go to movies at the theater and pay like we do? I know they go to premieres and stuff, but they can't make all of them.

I know George Lucas, Spielberg, Coppola, and Scorsese usually screen their movies for eachother.

A side note about Jackie Brown-

Okay, the one thing I don't really understand is Samuel Jackson's Ordell. I guess you would call him the bad guy, but I grew to like him almost as much as Jackie. If you think about it she really fucked him over, totally tricked him and lead him to his death. Then she steals his car! I kind of thought that was fucked up, I mean, it IS his money, and she did steal it from him. Does anyone else feel this way?

And a year and three months later... I give the only real Jackie Brown thread the bump it deserves.

I first saw Jackie Brown a little over a year ago on VHS, and immediately ordered the then-new DVD from Amazon.com.  Oddly enough, I only watched the extras at first; haven't actually watched the film itself on DVD until now.  Just haven't had the chance.  Funny coincidences today.  El Duderino has a new avatar (cool).  Someone in the chat mentions how underrated this film is (it is).  And I end up watching it (I had planned to anyway).  Fun times.

Dialogue - great.  Style - cool.  It really is such a funny movie, too.  Like when Melanie is telling Louis about when she was in Japan and then out of the blue says "Wanna fuck?"  There's a couple of lines like that, where in the delivery they become laugh-out-loud funny.  And it's a smart film, too.  The whole money exchange sequence is really brilliant.  Shame we never did get to watch this one as part of the QT Fest.  Oh well.  Better planning, next time around, when he gets another film made, perhaps.

I watched it again this weekend.  The first time I saw it on VHS, I didn't care for it, but now I like it much more, probably because I know what to expect.  Like many, I was expecting a riff on blaxploitation when I first saw it.

It's a bitch getting the DVDs out of the hubs.  I feel like I'm about to snap the discs in half.  I haven't had a problem with the PF DVDs in the same style case.

one of my favorite little moments from the movie...when they're discussing the girl ordell is gonna get for the exchange:

"and don't get some rock-hoe - "

"hey HEY, she ain't gonna BE no rock-hoe."

I rank this as Tarantino's best film (have not seen Mata a el Bill - Volume 2 yet). Its pace, humour, music, characters, performances... everything's in the right place here. This is almost just talk talk talk, and I can't grow tired of listening to them. Jackie B. is one of my all-time faves.

Hehehe, yeah, that was great.

I also like the whole "country as a chicken coop" speech...

it's my personal favorite, but i still think PF is his best, on the basis that no one but tarantino could have given us a film like that.  jackie brown could have been a good film in other hands, i think (altho tarantino knocked it out of the fuckin park) and kill bill (now as one complete film I judge it) is too new, let's see how it holds up (tho i'm expecting it to get better with age as his other films)

he stole that line/set-up from the Hal Ashby film Shampoo with Warren Beatty and Julie Christie.  also: i think personally, although i like this film alot and saw it on christmas (opening) day in the theatres in 1997, its the only film where the dialogue seemed a little TOO qt.  like, took me out of the movie because it seemed like how characters in one of his movies should talk instead of how people might actually talk.  its a good film, but cant touch the fiction.

I haven't seen Volume 2 yet, but if it's as good as 1 was, I think it has a great chance to top Jackie Brown. (I also think when I see it, I'll look at it as one movie as well...)

now now dont discourage him....there are those of us that are of the opinion that volume 2 was more satisfying, i happen to be one of them....though i do agree that it doesnt play as one film like vol 1 did but then again, it really couldn't

edit - did i contradict myself here?  ahh well, whatever my point was

QT's best film and QT's best cameo

Okay, so it's not really a "Cameo"

Some people argue this, but I always look for a good reason why. Pulp Fiction is a hard film to pin down to an explanation. Jackie Brown is too. The easy explanation is that it has a plot, but I'd love to hear some ideas.

i would love to talk about jackie brown, but i don't want to talk about it without rewatching it.   just give me a couple months to come up with a satisfying post that i won't later regret (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=291.msg218581#msg218581).  but it'll probably start out being about jackie brown and then i'll end up talking about antonioni or bresson or something.

This is probably my second favorite Quentin movie. It's not perfect and it drags a bit but it's his most mature movie yet. His later work is much weaker in comparison.

He can write an intellegent and thoughtful script about older adults without guns going off at every second. With "Jackie Brown", he isn't concerned about pleasing younger audiences. He's more concerned with characters and relationships. He wants to serve his material.

'Jackie Brown' Prequel Being Made, Minus Tarantino
by Monika Bartyzel; Cinematical

For the most part, the masses seem perfectly fine with Quentin Tarantino's tendency to infuse his films with a neverending stream of cinematic references and homages. But what about other people tackling Tarantino's world and vision? Do the same rules apply?

According to JoBlo, there is a Jackie Brown prequel in the works, titled The Switch. The big catch, or switch as the case may be, is that QT has nothing to do with this. He merely gave his blessing on the project and moved on. Dan Schechter adapted Elmore Leonard's novel, and the author will be one of the film's executive producers. As Tarantino mentioned to the Telegraph back in February, this is the book that turned the filmmaker into a Leonard fan, even though that wasn't the film he ultimately made.

The Samuel L. Jackson and Robert De Niro characters Ordell Robbie and Louis Gara lead this tale, which finds the pair becoming fast friends in prison, and then teaming up back in the real world for a big job -- kidnapping the wife of a rich developer for ransom. But in an Overboard-type twist, the guy doesn't want his "beloved" back. With a ticked off wife now in their ranks, they have to move towards Plan B.

The film will soon head out to find a director and cast.

I read The Switch a few years ago. It's my favorite Elmore Leonard novel and felt more cinematic than Rum Punch. It is funny and has that Leonard flavor. It would be ideal for Tarantino but he already did that with JB. On the other hand, good Leonard adaptations are hard to come by. Only a truly solid director can make them justice.

I just read 'Rum Punch'. I knew there was something kinda lacking, I felt like I had to keep playing catch up with all the characters backstories. Had no idea there was a prequel, but that's not a surprise with Leonard. Gotta go pick up 'The Switch' now. I think Elmore Leonard is my favorite writer simply because whenever I start to read his books, I have to finish them.

No, cool. It's impressive how much of his stuff has been adapted. 3:10 to Yuma, The Big Bounce, and 52-pick up each have two different film versions. I have barely scratched the surface of this guy's work, but all praises due to Jackie Brown for introducing me to him.

watched a 35mm print last sat. night, forgot what a powerhouse this was. saw it again at home during the week. as good as anything he's ever done. QT's blaxpolitation/south bay spin on rum punch makes the source material as much his own as it is leonard's. what struck me most these viewing after not having seen it for like 16 years, was sam jackson as ordell robbie, just what a badass gangster he is, he's a fucking feral animal by the end, was completely transfixed by the performance. everyone in it is amazing, but Jackson stood out the most, becoming more and more desperately vicious as the story unfolds, eventually landing as one of the more terrifying baddies in my recollection. amazing how such a simple pulpy crime plot has this many layers to it. i can't rank his movies, the love I have for them all is basically equal. the only QT excluded from this circle of love is Death Proof, been a while since i've seen it, and while i think it's a good movie, it's just nowhere near the level of any of the others.
