While looking at the upcoming releases for different studios, it struck me that Fox Searchlight has the most interesting and diverse sounding collection of movies scheduled for 2004. This year so far they've already released CLUB DREAD and THE DREAMERS (ok, they also released NEVER DIE ALONE and JOHNSON FAMILY VACATION, but they can't all be winners). But in the months to come, they have movies like NAPOLEON DYNAMITE, GARDEN STATE, I HEART HUCKABEES, SIDEWAYS (the new movie from ELECTION and ABOUT SCHMIDT director Alexander Payne), and the Johnny Knoxville/Farrelly Brothers collaboration THE RINGER. Sometime in December they're going to be releasing the first movie from the people behind The Onion too.
All the most 'interesting' films seem to be part of the indie-oriented/small budget arms of the Major Studios
Fox Searchlight - 20th Century Fox
Focus Features - Universal
Sony Classics - Sony/Columbia
Miramax - Disney
Warner just started with Warner Independent Features which will also have some good films out this year

Focus Features is the studio I'm watching. As far as I know they haven't released a film I didn't like.
i'm all about miramax
My favorites are Lion's Gate and Canal+ (StudioCanal).

pretty much the only true independent studio that is doing well...from what I know.

I was going to mention that in my post, but decided against it.

Thats cool... they really dont deserve it :)
Miramax is probably our best studio right now.
What has Lions Gate done that makes them so great?
was that a bottle rocket reference? 'cause if it is--good for you.
No, it wasn't. Aside from Caan attacking Futureman, and the soundtrack, I don't like Bottle Rocket.
What has Miramax done that's so great? Most people who don't know much point to Miramax because of its early 90s reputation, but they're hardly up to it anymore. I'd have to go with Focus because their recent slate has been pretty damn good, but also if you look at its combined history of USA, Regency and October, it HAS been the best studio for the last half dozen years. Think: Traffic, Being John Malkovich, Gosford Park, Lost In Translation, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Pianist...

don't forget 21 Grams.
My bad. Point still remains the same...
Oh, and one other thing, Focus also contains Good Machine. So you've got their films PLUS, Focus is being run by James Schamus.

i might be wrong on some of these but....i believe that lion's gate is responsible for audiences seeing:
affliction
american psycho
frailty
monster's ball
wonderland(well.....i at least liked it... :) )
irreversible
cabin fever
shattered glass
secretary
rules of attraction
ameros perros
.......i know there are many more (perhaps even more 'prominent' titles) ....but these i listed are fine and are worth of mention .....
Well, I liked Affliction...
Quote from: SoNowThenWhat has Lions Gate done that makes them so great?
I was just pointing out that they are independent...but films they have done...
Dogma
Dogville
Frailty
Girl with a Pearl Earring
Monster's Ball
Secretary
Stevie
Well, it's the thought that counts...at least they're putting out some discussion-worthy material. Add Dogville to that list, by the way. Or does The Punisher cancel it out? I have to admit, I'm discouraged by their new logo. It lacks the antiquated coolness of their classic constellation design.
Focus is the best, though. Even Deliver Us From Eva wasn't THAT bad, for a sitcomish romantic comedy, and if that's the worst they have to offer...
I'm with the Focus group, ha ha.
My runner-up reliable studio: Sony Pictures Classics. Hit or miss, but when they hit, they hit hard, and they seem to care about quality projects.
There you have it. Focus wins. I never saw Deliver us from Eva, so I can't say anything about it, but I've loved all the Focus features I have seen, which something that should be recognized with a pat on the back or something.

i'm not patting you on the back for that.
