those bands you love because the vocalist
or those vocalists make the band
or the vocalist
or just your favorite vocalist
my case:
Bono= i love him even his huge noise (just kidding) his voice is amazing, his performance on stage, his personality, and his lyrics, well i just love him
David Gahan= Depeche Mode is one of my old favorites bands and David's voice is wonderful, a great singer really and i'm happy he didn't die in 90's (i think he was close to)
Mick Hucknall= what a voice!!! if i love Simply Red is in many ways because him, but well the band is great too, well Mick is great!
Damon Albarn= i think this guy is really gifted, and how many people is able to being the leader of two excellent bands as Blur and Gorillaz?? just Damon!
Michael Hutchence= ok he's not in this world but how i loved his voice!, i cried a week when he died, his voice was so sexy (well he was so sexy) anyway i'm sure INXS died with him, maybe some people don't think the same, but i miss him so much...

Maynard James Keenan, Trent Reznor, ROBERT PLANT, Isaac Brock, Roger Daltry, Mikael Akerfeldt, Jeff Magnum, John Darinelle. THOM YORKE

Naw, dog, the Real Thing is good. Better than Album of the Year IMO
But Patton is the man... nothing beats FNM's cover of Glory Box and Fantomas cut dick, but Bungle's in my jungle.
greatest vocalist...i may butcher the name, but it's the singer from sublime...bradley nowell....

the real thing better than album of the year? no way man, album of the year is a masterpiece and up there with angel dust. patton wasn't even that involved on the real thing, the material was there when he joined.
the man is a genius just look at his resume, fnm, bungle, fanthomas, tomahawk, the dillinger ep and lovage and now he's working with dan the automater again in a project called peeping tom.
i put mr bungle as one the greatest bands ever.

..vedder
ashcroft
.
bowie..
M.JamesK.
..lanegan.
cornell.
waters..
and lotsa others..
well i really respond to the following people's vocals even if i don't enjoy their music as a whole
brad nowell- when it cracks, i find that really sexy
bono- it's just powerful and filled with emotion
fiona apple- very sexy, sinewy stuff, smoky and world-weary but very vulnerable
jeff buckley- best vocal range in rock n roll
rodger daltrey- pure machismo, this guy's voice is as alert and ready for action as an erect penis. (ok shut up i know it's a weird comparison but i just did a report on freud so i got the phallic shit in my head)
robbie williams- this guy's voice can transition between so many different emotions. he's really a great showman
crispin mills- (kula shaker)- this guy's voice is the epitome of how appealing cynicism can be
beck- when he sings "debra" i just wanna cry. this guy doesn't have much range or tone but dude, he sings with an equal amount of passion and intellect. he's pouring his mind and his heart out.that's what i love about him
rufus wainwright- this guy's voice makes me want to be a homosexual male.
george michael- ditto
pj harvey- if tori amos were good, she'd sound like this (no offense tori fans)
laura nyro- man her voice was so rich and bluesy. i love the way she made her voice adjust to match what genre she was in
sheryl crow- dude, i know i know. she ain't that great now. but if you listen to tuesday night music club, there's genuine aww shucks working class sexy charisma there.
meshell ndegeocello- sultry shit man
rivers cuomo- my opinions on weezer are mixed but this guy's voice really can evoke a lot of intelligent teen angst in just a couple notes
Robert Plant
Roger Daltry
Bob Marley
Rob Halford's early years with Judas Priest - DAMN that guy had high end and could do it better live.......unlike many
Maynard
Geddy Lee of Rush
Perry Farrell
Chris Cornell
Corgan - from Gish and Siamese Dream
Sade`
Bjork
Fiona Apple
Quote from: freakerdudeSade`

i dig frank sinatra alot. my favorite singer ever.
Quote from: Cecilthe moz
...absolutely. Without him, The Smiths would've been absolutely nothing, as evidenced by the ever-fading fortunes and squandered talents of the other band members.
Thom Yorke & Billy Corgan for their unusual voices
Axl Rose before he ruined his voice with substance abuse
Q-Tip for his smooth delivery
Jack White may have one of the best rock voices
Julian Casablancas for his cool delivery
...That is all I can think of for now.
i would like to nominate dimitri minakakis of dillinger escape plan.
Paul Simon, oh he of the angelic voice
Quote from: SoNowThenPaul Simon, oh he of the angelic voice
i'd like to see paul and dimitri ina rap battle.

I believe that is Shirley Manson.
A few more singers to add:
James Brown
Barry White
Roy Orbison
Jim Morrison
Freddy Mercury
Tupac Shakur - obviously not a singer but much more than just a rap artist.
That's right. It's thread necromancy time. Last one for now, though...
I'm going to post a few songs with great vocal performances. Check them out and post your own!
"Careful" by Paramore (particularly 0:23 to 0:45)
"In For The Kill" by La Roux (3:35 anyone?)
"Little Bird" by Imogen Heap
"Medicina" by Buke and Gass (couldn't resist)
"Illuminated" by Mum
"Get Out" by Circa Survive
"Blown Away" by Shiny Toy Guns (not so much the chorus, but I love the delivery of the verses)
A couple live performances off the top of my head:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lcc7-we_2DM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUmmsMeHAaE&feature=feedlik
I listened to the first one -- Paramore. Good vocals, but it just seemed so overproduced. That amount of producing and studio tinkering can probably make anyone sound good.
The blond was cute tho.

Well, yeah... Not the case here though. Hayley Williams is probably one of my favorite vocalists...

Paramore needs stronger songwriting, and they'd be a great band.

There's naked pictures of her out there in the interwebs.
Two years ago i went to/played at a festival where paramore and the all-american rejects were the featured headliners for one of the two days. Paramore fucking killed it live and when the Rejects followed they really didn't compare. BUT, paramore's music is borderline unlistenable otherwise. I think they just broke up too?
Quote from: squints on February 21, 2011, 09:35:39 AMBUT, paramore's music is borderline unlistenable otherwise. I think they just broke up too?
It looks like the latest news is that they're releasing something this summer. I don't see any breakup news.
But yeah, like I was saying, I think their problem is lazy/inept songwriting, except for a few very good songs.
There's no denying that Hayley Williams has a nice set of pipes (and her singing's pretty good, too... *rimshot*). They do have some fun songs as well; I like them better when they're channeling Cheap Trick ("That's What You Get", "Misery Business") than when they try to be balladeers. And they didn't break up, but two of the founding members left the band recently. It seems I know way more about Paramore than I feel comfortable with.
Here's some more Great Moments In Vocal History:
Tool - Pushit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UokTE-njLRA) (the part starting at about 8:27 wrecks me every time)
Mayfield Four - Inner City Blues (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYE_yU_vZvI) - Myles Kennedy is the best rock singer alive, and he used to be in an amazing band called Mayfield Four that made great music, and none better than this Marvin Gaye cover. He is now in a not so amazing band called Alter Bridge, which is the band the former members of Creed started after Scott Stapp left. I miss Mayfield Four.
Brandi Carlile - The Story (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8pQLtHTPaI) - Brandi Carlile has just a great voice in general, but when she gets to the part at 2:53 and her voice cracks I get goosebumps.
The Decemberists - The Wanting Comes in Waves (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfKhydixkeA) - Don't worry, Cron, I'm not talking about Colin Meloy's voice on this one. I'm talking about the backup vocals provided by Shara Worden, of the band My Brightest Diamond. She first comes into the song around 2:08, and her voice is so fucking powerful and Grace Slick-y. I saw them live shortly after Hazards of Love came out, and her voice was even more amazing live. Also great in this song is Becky Stark, whose background vocals start around 4:17.
EDIT: I forgot to include my favorite voice of all voices, J Tillman: When I Light Your Darkened Door (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNBp6x_gXrE), Firstborn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVPet3TWwHw)
Quote from: polkablues on February 21, 2011, 11:05:00 AMAnd they didn't break up, but two of the founding members left the band recently.
Yeah... I'm not sure that's working out so well. Paramore's new single (http://www.paramore.net/preorder) is just horrible. Sounds like it was recorded in a closet with a USB mic. (Yes, the iTunes preview sounds the same.) Uninspiring, forced hook. Embarrassing lyrics. What's more, Haley is doing basically nothing with her vocals in the song.
I actually sort of had my hopes up, because "In The Mourning" was really good. (Well, at least the acoustic demo version.)
