Title: New Fall Shows
Post by: Kal on May 16, 2006, 09:54:40 AM
I' ve been reading a little about the new shows for next season... so far ABC and NBC announced their lineups. They are coming strong with a lot of new stuff, some seems creative and some you know it will tank after one or two episodes. Its sad when you know that a show has absolutely no chance. I wonder why "they" dont know it.

I didnt watch TV at all until a couple of years ago, and now its amazing how many shows I've been following: 24, Lost, Smallville, Entourage, Curb (thats a classic with Seinfeld), Nip Tuck, The Office (USA)... and now I started with Veronica Mars. Most of them I got in with DVDs, but still...

Anyways, NBC's new Alan Sorkin's drama with Mathew Perry and Amanda Peet seems to be very good. I'm excited about that one. Heroes also. There is the Andy Ritcher/Conan O'Brien commedy about a detective, and another drama based on Friday Night Lights, which may be good.

I saw there is a new ABC show with Kim Raver (Audrey on 24) which means that she may die or be gone for next Season of 24. Also there is a new JJ Abrams show on ABC called Six Degrees.

And ABC also is remaking the Colombian telenovela Betty the Ugly, which is funny because I know the producers of the original show very well. They made so much money with it, and its amazing that its being remade here. Its usually the other way around.

He's only exec. producing that show, and that job duty on What About Brian hasn't affected Lost.

NBC Ready for Some Regis

Regis Philbin got another first-string job. Joey got sacked. Crossing Jordan got benched.

Football analogies were in order Monday as NBC announced a fall schedule that will rely on prime-time pigskin and six new series to turn around the fourth-place network.

The ubiquitous Philbin, Matthew Perry and Alec Baldwin will be among the familiar faces in freshman shows. Matt LeBlanc, Benjamin Bratt and the Fear Factor bugs are among the stars losing their network parking spaces.

Overall, NBC announced plans for four new dramas, two new comedies, four midseason replacements and one new Philbin-hosted, Simon Cowell-produced talent show.

Canceled were: Joey, the LeBlanc-led Friends spinoff put out of its misery after two seasons; Fear Factor, the bug-eating reality show exterminated after six seasons; save for My Name Is Earl, every single new NBC show from last fall, including the Bratt-staffed E-Ring and the cult fave Surface; and, except for Deal or No Deal, every single new NBC show from midseason, including Teachers and Conviction.

In addition to the previously announced Sunday Night Football, or as it was known for 35 years on ABC, Monday Night Football, NBC will go long with Friday Night Lights, an hourlong drama inspired by the 2004 football film of the same name (itself based on the 1990 football book of the same name).

Less the network alienate non-football fans, NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly noted in a telephone press conference that Friday Night Lights has been described as "The O.C. that's got authenticity."

NBC, however, will risk alienating Crossing Jordan fans by renewing the crime drama for a sixth season, but leaving it off the fall schedule.

The show, which had higher ratings than The Office, The Biggest Loser and Las Vegas (three NBC series rewarded with fall slots), got squeezed out of its 10 p.m. Sunday home by Sunday Night Football and a new Jeff Goldblum series. Sunday Night Football will dominate NBC's Sunday nights through December; Raines, a House-ian police detective drama starring Goldblum, will assume the 10 p.m. slot in the winter.

In lieu of a fall slot, Crossing Jordan, "a great utility player," per Reilly, will be plugged in somewhere, sometime during the new season.

Scrubs, a bubble show renewed for a sixth season, will be deployed on a similar as-needed basis.

Elsewhere, NBC resolved a few cliffhangers: No, ER won't be moved off Thursday (although, yes, it will have to learn to share); no, The Apprentice won't be fired; and, yes, Andy Richter won't rest until he stars in a hit series of his own.

NBC handled the ER matter--the aging, but still semi-popular series dedicated to the advancement of new regular John Stamos--by announcing that the medical drama would air in its traditional 10 p.m., Thursday slot through December, straight, no repeats, and then step aside for The Black Donnellys, an Irish Mob drama from Crash director Paul Haggis. Once the Haggis show concludes its run, ER will get back its turf. Or, at least that's the plan for now.

The Apprentice, meanwhile, currently struggling through its least watched season ever, will be allowed to see if a change of scenery (Los Angeles instead of New York) can improve Donald Trump's TV fortunes. The series will be back for a sixth cycle in January.

As for Richter, the former Conan O'Brien sidekick, late of the short-lived sitcoms Andy Richter Controls the Universe and Quintuplets, will see if the third time is the charm with Andy Barker, P.I., a midseason replacement comedy about an accountant who turns gumshoe.

A brief look at the other new series:

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (fall): The previously announced star of the schedule that isn't football. In this hourlong drama, Friends alum Perry and West Wing alum Bradley Whitford play producers of Saturday Night Live, sorry, "a popular, late-night comedy show comedy sketch show."

Heroes (fall): "A high school cheerleader learns that she is totally indestructible." No one-trick pony, this hourlong drama about ordinary people discovering their inner Superman and Wonder Woman, also promises a stripper (Final Destination's Ali Larter) who "uncovers that her mirror has a secret."

Kidnapped (fall): Prison Break meets Dynasty in this hourlong thriller about the abduction of a teenage boy that focuses on his well-to-do Manhattan family, his kidnappers and his would-be saviors in law enforcement. Best-case scenario for NBC: The show's a hit, and the kid doesn't go home for a very long time. Timothy Hutton and Dana Delany head the ensemble cast.

20 Good Years (fall): In this "high-energy romp" of a sitcom, John Lithgow, 60, and Jeffrey Tambor, 61, play friends who optimistically estimate they have two solid decades left to change their lives.

30 Rock (fall): SNL head writer Tina Fey plays the head writer of SNL, sorry, "a frenetic television variety show." Frequent SNL guest host Alec Baldwin costars, as do SNL regulars current,  Rachel Dratch, and past, Tracy Morgan. NBC said it was not known yet if Fey and Dratch will continue to work on the show that actually is called SNL.

America's Got Talent (January): Regis Philbin looks for new talent that presumably producer Simon Cowell isn't looking for on American Idol.

The Singles Table (midseason): Because no NBC schedule would be complete without at least one attempt to redo Friends, this half-hour comedy sees five "witty and single strangers" bond while consigned to the "singles table" at a wedding. John Cho (Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle) stars.

And here's a night-by-night look at NBC's fall lineup:

SUNDAY: Football Night in America; Sunday Night Football (January 2007 lineup: America's Got Talent; The Apprentice; Raines)
MONDAY: Deal or No Deal; Heroes; Medium
TUESDAY: Friday Night Lights; Kidnapped; Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
WEDNESDAY: The Biggest Loser; 20 Good Years; 30 Rock; Law & Order
THURSDAY: My Name Is Earl; The Office; Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip; ER (fall)/The Black Donnellys (January)
FRIDAY: Deal or No Deal; Las Vegas; Law & Order: Criminal Intent
SATURDAY: Dateline Saturday; reruns

11 new series, fewer 'Lost' repeats on ABC

ABC will unveil 11 new series to advertisers today as it seeks to rebuild its comedy lineup and expand its stable of hit dramas Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy and Lost.

Biggest change for viewers: Anatomy's move to a new night (possibly Thursday) so it can be used to launch a new series.

Lost fans will find fewer repeats interrupting its intricate mystery: Original episodes will be clustered in longer chunks after an October start. Housewives remains on Sundays at 9, and Dancing with the Stars gets its first fall berth but will also switch nights.

Yet none of the new scripted series introduced last fall will be back, including Commander in Chief, Invasion and Freddie. Hope & Faith is also a goner, leaving According to Jim and     George Lopez as the network's only returning comedies.

Spring tryout What About Brian, from Lost producer J.J. Abrams, will return, and the Mission: Impossible III director has a third show in the lineup: Six Degrees, about interconnected lives of New Yorkers.

In contrast with past years, when the focus has been on fall schedules, ABC - like NBC - is unveiling most of next year's new shows at once, and will gradually sprinkle them over the course of the season.

ABC also needs more programming come September after the loss of Monday Night Football.

•Dramas. In addition to Degrees, ABC has Brothers & Sisters, a family soap starring Ally McBeal's Calista Flockhart and Rachel Griffiths (Six Feet Under); Men in Trees, starring Anne Heche as a shrink who moves to Alaska, where she's surrounded by eligible men; The Traveler, a thriller about two grad students framed as terrorists in a national security emergency; Ugly Betty, about a homely girl hired at a fashion magazine; The Nine, about another group of strangers - freed bank-robbery hostages - from Without a Trace creator Hank Steinberg; and Day Break, an action thriller starring Taye Diggs as a cop on the lam who is framed for murder.

•Comedies.Let's Rob ... stars Donal Logue as leader of a group of blue-collar guys who try to rob Mick Jagger, who will occasionally appear; Big Day, a series built entirely around a young couple's wedding day; Notes from the Underbelly, centering on expectant parents; In Case of Emergency, with four high school pals who unexpectedly reunite as each faces a crossroads; and Help Me Help You, starring Cheers' Ted Danson as a group-therapy shrink.

I like the October start for Lost, even if it means that we have to wait longer to find out whatever bastard cliffhanger they leave us with.  As long as there's no stupid 6 week break from November to mid January again... though they should just make more episodes instead of worrying how they're going to fill the time.

And why are they not putting Scrubs on with Earl and The Office so I can get all my sitcom viewing for the week done in one shot?

Not much is shaken up in No. 1 CBS' schedule

CBS, bringing six freshman shows back for second seasons, will add just one new comedy and three dramas to a fall schedule that is far more stable than those of major competitors.

The network, which presents the fall lineup to advertisers today, will finish its fourth consecutive season as No. 1 among total viewers, thanks to a lineup long on procedural crime dramas, including three versions of CSI.

After Threshold failed last fall, CBS will try to broaden its palette with another sci-fi-tinged thriller and legal and medical dramas.

CBS' Sunday movie - the last network movie slot and a staple since 1986 - is canceled, making room for two dramas. Without a Trace, which regularly beats ER on Thursdays, could move to Sunday nights at 9, which would allow CBS to launch new shows behind that series, The Unit and CSI.

Returning freshman shows are The Unit, Criminal Minds, How I Met Your Mother, Close to Home and Ghost Whisperer, and midseason comedy The New Adventures of Old Christine will return to its Monday 9:30 p.m. ET/PT slot.

Comedies Courting Alex and Out of Practice are goners. (Practice co-creator Joe Keenan, a former Frasier producer, may move to Desperate Housewives.)

The King of Queens returns for a ninth season. But it will not air until January at the earliest and is expected to be paired with new comedy Rules of Engagement, about a single guy, his engaged friends and a married couple. How I Met YourMother is expected to fill King's Monday 8 p.m. ET/PT slot, followed by new comedy The Class, about a group of third-grade classmates reunited as adults. Class will mark Friends' co-creator David Crane's TV return. Jason Ritter (Joan of Arcadia) stars.

Like NBC and ABC, CBS is putting an emphasis on dramas as the networks continue to struggle to develop hit comedies.

New fall dramas: Shark, starring James Woods as a celebrity defense lawyer who becomes an L.A. prosecutor [pilot directed by Spike Lee]; Jericho, about the aftermath of a nuclear mushroom cloud in a Kansas town; and Smith, about career criminals plotting heists and starring Ray Liotta, Virginia Madsen and Simon Baker.

Midseason dramas include Waterfront, starring Joe Pantoliano as a corrupt mayor of Providence, and 3 Lbs., about a gifted brain surgeon, starring Stanley Tucci in a retooled version of a series rejected last spring with Dylan McDermott.

CW mixes old, new in sked; Fox thrills

The fall schedule of the CW, the new network that will emerge from the ashes of UPN and WB Network, will be a patchwork of old and new with a comedy block on Sunday and familiar 8 p.m. anchors on Monday-Thursday from the current WB and UPN schedules.

CW entertainment president Dawn Ostroff will give advertisers and the media their first glimpse of the nascent net and its programming strategy today when she unveils its inaugural fall lineup at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York.

In a surprising move, the network Wednesday night gave an eleventh-hour 13-episode order to the WB comedy "Reba."

Meanwhile, Fox is loading up on intense dramas. The network is expected to reveal plans for late-summer launches of new dramas "Vanished" and "Standoff" at its presentation today. The network also is rumored to pin its hopes for a long-elusive Thursday breakthrough on freshman comedy " 'Til Death," starring Brad Garrett.

"Reba" is the second long-running WB series to get a 13-episode reprieve from the CW after being canceled. Also Wednesday, the network finalized deals with the core cast of "7th Heaven," clearing the path for the drama to continue beyond the series finale last month.

Canceling "Reba," which was in the middle of a two-year contract between WB and 20th Century Fox TV, would have been costly for the CW, with sources pegging the penalty at about $20 million, including compensating the studio for lost syndication revenue from the sixth-season episodes that would have not been produced.

"7th Heaven" will return for an 11th season in its signature Monday 8 p.m. slot. The long-running family drama about Rev. Eric Camden and his clan will be followed at 9 p.m. by another family drama, the new series "Runaway," which centers on a father, wrongfully convicted of murder, who is on the run with his wife and kids.

Also staying put is WB's "Gilmore Girls," which will open Tuesday night for CW at 8 p.m., leading into UPN's fan favorite "Veronica Mars."

UPN's hit reality series "America's Next Top Model" will continue to run Wednesday 8 p.m., sharing the slot with WB's unscripted hit "Beauty and the Geek."

The teen-friendly reality hour will be followed at 9 p.m. by WB's steamy teen drama "One Tree Hill."

WB's successful pairing of sci-fi dramas "Smallville" and "Supernatural" will stay intact on Thursday, while UPN's "WWE SmackDown!" will remain on Friday.

On Sunday, UPN's comedies "Everybody Hates Chris," "All of Us," "Girlfriends" and its spinoff "The Game" will run in a two-hour block along with an hour of repurposed CW programming, a page from WB's playbook.

As of Wednesday night, it wasn't clear if the repurposed hour will air at 7 p.m., the way it had been on the WB, or at 9 p.m., creating a more traditional program flow from a two-hour comedy block to a drama.

A comedy lineup on Sunday is a throwback to the launch of WB, whose first two-night schedule in 1995 included six comedies on Sunday, including "Sister, Sister."

Fox kept its schedule under wraps, but sources indicated that the network is considering a late-summer launch for "Vanished" and "Standoff" (previously "Primary") and sophomore one-hours "Bones" and "Prison Break," the latter of which benefited from a late-August start last year.

"Vanished," which chronicles the disappearance of a senator's wife, is expected to land at Monday 9 p.m., following the second season of manhunt-themed thriller "Prison Break."

Meanwhile, "Standoff," about a team of a male and a female hostage negotiators, is rumored to be airing after "Bones" on Wednesday.

Another new drama, Jerry Bruckheimer's "Justice" (previously "American Crime"), might share Tuesday night with Fox's hottest scripted series, medical drama "House."

" 'Til Death," the new comedy starring Garrett and Joely Fisher, would lead off Fox's Thursday lineup at 8 p.m., paired with sophomore half-hour "The War at Home." "The O.C." is said to stay put at 9 p.m.

Fox's other new fall comedy, "Happy Hour," is understood to be a contender for the post-"Simpsons" Sunday 8:30 p.m. slot.

Fox is unveiling its scheduling plans for the 2006-07 season at the Armory.

Hm, it's interesting, but to me has some similarities to Lost: international ensemble, connected by strange super natural occurences that tie them together. Also, if that Middle Eastern guy is the geneticist that did this to them, how he is the same age? Or maybe that's not the plot?

the efforts of marketing geniuses at NBC notwithstanding, i like the premise. but most of all i like this:

Things that are good about this show:

It's good to see that, despite a marketing campaign that they clearly made by scanning the cover of the Lost first season DVD and photoshopping different actors in, this might be the first post-Lost show that actually has figured out what makes Lost a good show, and emulates that part as well.

It's good to see Adrian Pasdar in something that's not on the PAX network.

It's good to see that Ali Larter can be in something that's not a Final Destination movie.

It's good to see Greg Grunberg with an actual role.

It's good to see Hayden Panettiere all growed up.

Especially that last one.  Yowza!

The Nine
So much in life is beyond your control. One day you wake up and go to work like a regular day. Suddenly a random moment, an accident, a blessing, even a stranger, comes from out of the blue and redirects your life forever. But it's up to you to decide if that moment will stop you in your tracks or lift you up to new heights.

Today nine people face just such an unexpected twist when they are caught in a bank robbery gone wrong and endure a 52-hour hostage standoff that will leave two persons dead. When all is said and done, these nine people will never be the same. They will always share the common bond of what happens inside the bank...which only they'll know. And they will be forever affected and intertwined because of it.

From the creator of Without a Trace and an executive producer of The West Wing comes a dramatic character study that will keep audiences hooked from the beginning of the bank robbery to the end of the hostage standoff. Taking a twist from Lost, each episode will begin with a flashback to reveal another 10 minutes of the hostage crisis, uncovering why and how these nine strangers are still linked today. Starring Tim Daly (Wings), Chi McBride (Boston Public), and Scott Wolf (Party of Five).

Cast:Lourdes Benedicto, Camille Guaty, Scott Wolf, Jessica Collins, Tim Daly, Kim Raver, John Billingsley, Chi McBride, Dana Davis, Owain Yeoman

Pretty ambitious for a show that's going to get cancelled six weeks into the season.

I saw the pilot for 'Heroes,' which is actually pretty decent, though I was a little disappointed to not see Greg Grunberg in it.  Plus, the guy 2nd from left in the above pic didn't show up either.  I heard that it was a 2 part premiere or whatever, so we'll see if they show up.  Anyway, a solar eclipse happens and seems somehow tied in to a bunch of random citizens discovering their superpowers.  The Indian guy's father was researching human development and potential, and has died under mysterious circumstances, so he comes to NY to follow up, only to be pursued by some mysterious sinister guy (who I will not spoil, has a relationship with one of the leads).  The show has a narrator and chapter headings, and the end of the 1st ep. basically sets the stage for big trouble (for the season?  or series?) that an apocalypse is gonna happen (nicely revealed at the end of the end via art) unless these random people bound together to stop it.  It's an interesting setup, and I'm curious to see what the season arc will be-- this threat?  or getting together?  The weakest link in the show is clearly Larter and her story, who's power seems to be having an evil twin in a mirror?  She plays a total ho-bag with a typical too-smart kid.  The show is also suprisingly gory (severed limbs, grizzly murders, and Hayden P. shows off her rib cage, but not into Hollywood-anorexia way if you follow).  Overall, it's pretty cool, and definitely 'Unbreakable'-ish (I mean that in a good way, I like it).

Also, as for the competing 'SNL' shows, Sorkin's is clearly the best.  Ten times funnier than Fey's '30 Rock,' and it's the dramatic one!  '30' is a complete trainwreck.  It never recovers from the awful opening and I found it amusing that the show w/in the show was called 'The Girlie Show,' (and a star vehicle for Dratch's character  :saywhat:), which is what I often thought SNL had turned into.

I saw the pilot for Aaron Sorkin's new series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and must say if you've enjoyed the previous works, Sports Night and The West Wing i think you'll enjoy this. Has all the dressings of both series and the pilot delivers pretty well. I think this is available on Youtube already (I downloaded it off of a bittorrent site). I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who liked either Sports Night or the West Wing.

I didn't want to start another thread for a show most of us are probably not going to watch in a few weeks so I thought I'd just post here instead.

I watched the first episode of The Nine last night and obviously it's no Lost and it might lose steam by mid-season but it's off to a promising start.  It's got the flashback thing but it's not as "Lost-y" as Heroes (despite a former Party of Five cast member playing a doctor AND Hurley's mother playing the mother of 2 hostages) and it's a better written show.  So no, Polka, it's not that we're all spoiled by Lost.  This is definitely worth watching.  Plus, it's got the Velvet Teddy Bear of acting, Chi McBride.

Five minutes into the show, I remember thinking, "This is one of those shows that I'll watch the first one, I'll never watch again but I'll read up on it to find out what happened."  But I got into it after a while.  Nothing that I can recall made me cringe or roll my eyes so that's a good sign.  Actually, I take that back.  The Alvy Singer-esque rant Scott Wolf has about ATM lines that gets him and his girlfriend to go into the bank was very forced.  But other than that, I never felt like I was one step ahead of it.  I'm interested to find out why a 5 minute robbery turned into a 52 hour standoff, why the hostages changed so drastically afterwards, and why they are all so drawn to each other on the outside.

I don't want to say I'm hooked yet, but I'm taking the bait.

You see, and I'm all on the fence about this one.  I'm willing to keep watching for a while, but most of the cast left me unimpressed and everything that happened that wasn't directly related to the bank made me very sleepy.  But I'll give it a chance.

The show that's legitimately worth watching that no one's mentioned yet, though, is "Six Degrees".  It's refreshing, in that it's one of the very few non-high-concept shows to come out in a while.  It's about characters, not about some expansive plot.  And Campbell Scott is fantastic in it.  He's like the real-life version of the type of person that "House" is a caricature of.  It's the sort of work that should win all sorts of awards, but won't, because it's not flashy and obvious enough.

Whenever I heard something about Six Degrees, I thought, "Isn't that called The Nine?" and vice versa.  Damn those number-named shows!

I just switched over to a South Park rerun at 9:30.  I have no regrets.

But yeah, Knights of Prosperity shows some promise.  The last few years, it seems like we've only been granted one good new comedy per season, but this season might actually have TWO!

I tuned into the premiere of "Dirt" on Tuesday; what a painful, excruciating experience that was.

Flipping channels, I ended up watching about 20 minutes of it, not because I was interested, but I was trying to figure out why the hell David Fincher was in it.

NBC Announces Their Fall Schedule

(Someone should re-title this thread for 2007-2008)

NBC's 2007-08 lineup features the new dramas Journeyman (Mondays, 10 pm/ET), a romantic-mystery from the Emmy Award-winning producers of The West Wing, concerning a San Francisco newspaper reporter (Kevin McKidd, Rome) who inexplicably begins to travel through time and alter people's lives; and "Chuck" (Tuesdays, 9 pm/ET), a comedic spy thriller about an unassuming computer geek who is unexpectedly catapulted into a new career as a government agent after spy secrets are mysteriously embedded into his brain.

Also new this fall is the drama Bionic Woman (Wednesdays, 9 pm/ET), a re-imagination of the classic from David Eick (Battlestar Galactica) and Jason Smilovic (Kidnapped). Bionic Woman stars Michelle Ryan (EastEnders) as a young woman whose life is radically altered and empowered after a car crash. Additionally, Life (Wednesdays, 10 pm/ET) features a complex police detective (Damian Lewis, Band of Brothers) who's given a second chance on the force after serving years in prison for a crime he didn't commit.

The new dramedy Lipstick Jungle, from bestselling author Candace Bushnell (Sex and the City), is set to debut in January 2008 on Sundays (10 pm/ET). Created by Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Helene, (How I Met Your Mother), the series involves the lives of three high-powered friends (Brooke Shields, Suddenly Susan, Kim Raver, 24, and Lindsay Price, Beverly Hills, 90210) who are determined to achieve their dreams and to do it on their own terms.

The latest new comedy from NBC is The IT Crowd, based on the acclaimed British series that takes a behind-the-scenes peek at the misunderstood techies (Joel McHale, The Soup, and Richard Ayoade, The IT Crowd (U.K. version) who toil in the Information Technology department of a large, impersonal corporation. The IT Crowd is scheduled to join the NBC schedule during the course of the 2007-08 season.

In addition:

• NBC "bulks up" with 30 combined episodes of Heroes and Heroes: Origins, an innovative new spin-off that each week will introduce a new character — one of whom will be chosen by viewers through the Heroes website on NBC.com to become a cast regular the following season.

• The network has ordered 30 half-hours of the hit series The Office, including five hour-long episodes, and also has increased the season order for "My Name Is Earl" to 25 episodes.

• Jerry Seinfeld, star of the classic NBC mega-hit Seinfeld, returns to the network to create and star in 20 unique live-action comedy "minisodes" inspired by his experiences creating the upcoming DreamWorks animated feature film Bee Movie, in theaters November 2, 2007. NBC Universal will also have the exclusive U.S. broadcast and cable network rights to the film, which features Seinfeld as the voice of Barry B. Benson, a disillusioned bee. Produced by Seinfeld and DreamWorks, the 20 comedy shorts will give viewers a glimpse at Seinfeld's behind-the-scenes antics during production of the movie. The "minisodes" will run on NBC's primetime schedule this Fall, as well as on NBC.com, on designated days before and after the release of the film.

• Series renewals include the Peabody Award-winning drama Friday Night Lights, now shifting to Friday nights (10 pm/ET); Scrubs, also a Peabody winner, for a seventh season; and the venerable, Emmy-winning Law & Order, for its historic 18th season.

• NBC's acclaimed Thursday "Comedy Night Done Right" lineup will next year lead off with My Name is Earl at 8 pm/ET, which will be followed by 30 Rock at 8:30 pm, the Peabody Award-winning The Office at 9 pm and Scrubs at 9:30.

• New NBC series Bionic Woman and Life will be re-purposed on SCI FI Channel and USA Network, respectively, shortly after their original telecasts on NBC.

• NBC will kick-start the weekend on Fridays (8 pm/ET) with "Game Night," a rotation of game shows that features 1 vs 100 (hosted by Bob Saget) for eight weeks, followed by six weeks of the new variety competition series The Singing Bee in the fall. The program is a competition that challenges contestants to accurately sing the lyrics to popular songs — even when the band stops playing.

Later in the fall, NBC plans to introduce the unscripted series, World Moves, a talent competition program from executive producer Randy Jackson (American Idol) that features dance teams from around the world auditioning for their shot to come to Los Angeles and compete for a global championship and an international touring contract.

After Sunday Night Football concludes its season in January 2008, the network will unveil a new regular line-up. After the return of Dateline NBC (7 pm/ET) will be the 18th season premiere of Law & Order (8 pm/ET), followed by the fourth season debut of Medium (9 pm/ET) and the premiere of the sexy new dramedy Lipstick Jungle (10 pm/ET).

2007-08 NEW SERIES DESCRIPTIONS

New Dramas

JOURNEYMAN &mdash From Emmy Award-winning writer-producer Kevin Falls (The West Wing) and Emmy Award-winning director-producer Alex Graves (The West Wing"), "Journeyman" is a romantic mystery-drama about Dan Vasser (Kevin McKidd, Rome), a San Francisco newspaper reporter and family man who inexplicably begins to travel through time and change people's lives. Along the way, he also must deal with the difficulties and strife at work and home brought on by his sudden disappearances. However, his freewheeling travels through the decades reunite him with his long-lost fianc´e Livia (Moon Bloodgood, Day Break) — which complicates his present-day life with wife Katie (Gretchen Egolf, Martial Law) and their son. Reed Diamond (Homicide: Life on the Street) and Charles Henry Wyson ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button") also star.

CHUCK — From executive producer, Josh Schwartz (The O.C.) and executive producer-director McG (Charlie's Angels, We Are Marshall) comes a one-hour, comedic spy thriller about Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi, Less Than Perfect) — a computer geek who is catapulted into a new career as the government's most vital secret agent. When Chuck opens an e-mail subliminally encoded with government secrets, he unwittingly downloads an entire server of sensitive data into his brain. Now, the fate of the world lies in the unlikely hands of a guy who works at Buy More. Instead of fighting computer viruses, he must fight assassins and international terrorists. With the government's most precious secrets in Chuck's head, Major John Casey (Adam Baldwin, My Bodyguard) of the NSA assumes the responsibility of protecting him. His partner is the CIA's top agent (and Chuck's first date in years) Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strzechowski, Gone). They'll keep him safe by trading in his pocket protector for a bulletproof vest. Also starring are Joshua Gomez (Without a Trace) as Chuck's best buddy Morgan and Sarah Lancaster (What About Brian?) as Chuck's ever-supportive sister Ellie.

BIONIC WOMAN &mdash Struggling as a bartender and surrogate mom to her teenage sister, Jaime Sommers (Michelle Ryan, EastEnders) didn't think life could get much harder. But when a devastating car accident leaves her at death's door, Jaime's only hope for survival is a cutting-edge, top-secret technology that comes at a hefty price. With a whole new existence and a debt to re-pay, Jaime must figure out how to use her extraordinary abilities for good, while weighing the personal sacrifices she will have to make. Ultimately, it's Jaime's journey of self-discovery and inner strength that will help her embrace her new life as the Bionic Woman. Also starring are: Mae Whitman (State of Grace) as Becca, Jaime's younger sister; Miguel Ferrer (Crossing Jordan) as Jonas, the man who employs Jaime's boyfriend; Chris Bowers (Rescue Me) as Will, Jaime's boyfriend, who performs the operation; Will Yun Lee (Witchblade) as Jae, the specialized operations leader; and Molly Price (Third Watch), as Ruth, Jonas' second-in-command.

LIFE — From Rand Ravich and Far Shariat, the executive producers of the feature film The Astronaut's Wife, and David Semel, who directed the pilot of NBC's Heroes, Life is a new drama about a detective who is given a second chance. Damian Lewis (Band of Brothers) stars as complex, offbeat Detective Charlie Crews, who returns to the force after years in prison, thanks to close friend and attorney Constance Griffiths (Melissa Sagemiller, Sleeper Cell), after serving time for a crime he didn't commit. The cast also includes Sarah Shahi (Rush Hour 3) as Charlie's skeptical, demanding partner, Robin Weigart (HBO's Deadwood) as their hard-hitting lieutenant, and Adam Arkin (Chicago Hope) as former cellmate Ted Early.

LIPSTICK JUNGLE — Based on the best-selling novel by Candace Bushnell (Sex and the City), this fun dramedy follows three high-powered friends as they weather the ups and downs of lives lived at the top of their game. Nico (Kim Raver, 24), editor-in-chief of a hot fashion magazine, wants to replace her boss as CEO. Movie exec Wendy (Brooke Shields, Suddenly Susan) finds even her most earnest efforts may not be enough to balance career and family. And free-spirited designer Victory (Lindsay Price, Beverly Hills, 90210) longs to make her dreams come true, and maybe find Mr. Right along the way. Armed with humor and strength, these three modern New York women support one another through the triumphs and tears that are all part of making it big in the Big Apple. Written by executive producers DeAnn Heline and Eileen Heisler (both for How I Met Your Mother, Three Sisters) and based on the book by Bushnell.

New Comedy Series

THE IT CROWD — Ever wonder what's up with those quirky techies who come to fix the office computer when no one's around? The IT Crowd is an offbeat series, based on the critically acclaimed British comedy, that offers a humorous behind-the-scenes peek at the people who truly keep the office humming. Roy (Joel McHale, The Soup) and Moss (Richard Ayoade, The IT Crowd U.K.) are the misunderstood masters of their high-tech domain, but they lack the people skills to befriend anyone but each other. Their company's head is Denholm (Rocky Carrol, Chicago Hope), who wants the IT department to stay segregated and forever banished to the basement.

New Alternative Series

THE SINGING BEE — The Singing Bee is a variety-competition show that challenges contestants to accurately sing the lyrics to popular songs — even when the band stops playing. In this karaoke showdown, there's no middle ground for partially correct answers -- contestants must be perfect or they're out. Family-friendly, broad in appeal and conducive to playing (and singing) along at home, The Singing Bee features popular, recognizable music that inspires hilarious wrong answers and amazing performances by those rare contestants who somehow manage to get every word right.

WORLD MOVES — From executive producer Randy Jackson (American Idol) and the creators of the World Hip Hop Championship comes one of the most visual and captivating performance competition shows ever to hit TV. Thousands of dance teams from around the world will audition for their shot to come to Los Angeles and compete for a global championship and an international touring contract. The live television event features young teams of five to seven members demonstrating their athleticism, creativity and innovative choreography in a presentation that highlights both the competition and the personal drama unfolding within each team. Viewers from across the globe will vote via the Internet, by text message, or by phone to eliminate one team each week. Ultimately, it's not just about winning a competition; World Moves involves stories that change lives and bring the world together.

Its the first time I see something like this. Its interesting how online communities and fans are starting to make a difference, at least a small one for now.

To the fans of Jericho:

We have read your emails over the past few days and have been touched by the depth and passion with which you have expressed your disappointment. Please know that canceling a television series is a very difficult decision. Hundreds of people at the Network, the production company and the incredibly-talented creative team worked very hard to build and serve the community for this show -- both on-air and online. It is a show we loved too.

Thank you for supporting Jericho with such passion. We truly appreciate the commitment you made to the series and we are humbled by your disappointment. In the coming weeks, we hope to develop a way to provide closure to the compelling drama that was the Jericho story.

Sincerely,

Nina Tassler, President of CBS Entertainment

Its the first time I see something like this. Its interesting how online communities and fans are starting to make a difference, at least a small one for now.

It must have worked:

CBS eyes 'Jericho' resurrection

CBS is in talks to bring back the post-apocalyptic drama "Jericho" with a seven-episode midseason order.

There are no deals in place, and there are several hurdles to overcome, but the fact that the network is moving to resurrect the canceled freshman series is a testament to the legions of loyal fans who have been relentless in their campaign for saving the show, including sending tens of thousands of pounds of nuts to top CBS executives.

Talks are under way with cast members of the CBS Paramount Network TV series, including star Skeet Ulrich, to return. The network is said to have options on all actors, but deals need to be modified to reflect the unusual timing and size of the order. Proposed budget reductions would lead to some of "Jericho's" characters not returning for the abbreviated second season.

Serialized drama "Jericho," co-created and executive produced by Stephen Chbosky and executive produced by Jon Turteltaub, chronicles the lives of the residents of the town of Jericho who survived a series of nuclear explosions throughout the U.S.

Efforts are under way to assemble a writing staff for the proposed seven-episode order, with several original staff writers expected to return.

Carol Barbee, who served as executive producer/showrunner on the show last season, has been tapped as executive producer/showrunner on another CBS series under her overall deal at CBS Par TV, the midseason drama "Swingtown."

It is understood that she would be able to do "Swingtown" and "Jericho," probably serving as consultant on "Jericho."

"Jericho" had a promising launch in the fall but struggled in its return to the schedule after a three-month hiatus, when it had to face the biggest show on television, Fox's "American Idol."

Still, the show was popular on the Web and on other digital platforms and developed a strong fan base that refused to accept CBS' decision last month to cancel the show after one season. "Jericho" supporters launched the nuts campaign, which was inspired by a line in the first-episode finale uttered by Ulrich's Jake Green in response to the neighboring town's request to surrender. "Nuts," he said.

So apparently, Time Warner digital cable is offering free previews of the new NBC shows.  Over the weekend, I watched two of them: Chuck and The Bionic Woman.

Both are suprisingly very good, Chuck in particular being pretty great.  As long as they can keep the humor and action fresh from week to week, this is going to be the breakout hit of the fall.  Don't let McG's association with this fool you; it's by far the most promising pilot I've seen since Lost.

Bionic Woman is pretty good as well.  The first episode isn't spectacular and there was one cringe-worthy expression of "girl power" by way of an out-of-place reference to the first Superman movie but other than that, it's got tremendous potential.  And the fact that the producers of Battlestar Galactica are doing this show (as well as 2 cast members) gives me hope that it will get better as it goes on; at the very least it won't get worse.

I Amazon Unboxed the 4 new shows.

I agree with Chuck being the best of the bunch. The jokes were actually jokes that "geeks" would make. And they were funny. Normally when someone tries to make a show like this (I'm looking at your grave "Jake 2.0") the dialogue sounds like a writer trying to write geek. This actually came off genuine. Plus it has Adam Baldwin in it looking frumpy. I just wish he'd brought Vera along too. Giving it a solid A.

Bionic Woman was "ok" and it will be interesting to see if the plot was just the exposition they needed to lay down for the series to take off. It was pretty straight forward. I'm happy about the cast -- 3 BSG members by the way - Starbuck, Chief and Lampkin -- especially having Miguel Ferrer (Crossing Jordan) and Molly Price (Third Watch) as the handlers. And in case anyone was wondering - $50 Million is the new $6 Million. B- for now, but it shows the potential of becoming an A show rather quickly.

Life I really liked even though it has the conventional detective show framework. Damian Lewis (Cpt. Winters) is just a great actor and I've liked him in everything I've seen him in (save for the Shit Weasel movie). He's really good in the role and is pretty much the only thing that helps free this show from the conventional mold. However they just tried this same show with Raines -- Jeff Goldblum as a detective that sees dead people -- and NBC ditched it pretty fast. I just don't think NBC is the right network to let a show like this succeed. And Goldblum was definitely more of a "name" than Lewis. I liked the attitude of the show though, B.

Journeyman was the one I was looking least forward too and it pretty much was what I expected. It was smarter than I counted on and the way the lead convinces his wife he's telling her the truth was very well done. However the show is just kind of aimless right now. It's biggest influence is Quantum Leap. It even has the same device (jump back into someone's life and fix it for the best). He remains himself though, so no drag dress in this show. They did give it a more interesting direction with making his long lost, dead lover a fellow Journey(wo)man as well. It could find its audience though. C+

I think Stefen's internet has aids.. he probably has something funny or interesting to say, but everytime he hits "post", it deletes anything that makes any sense and adds some kind of pop-cult-reference that doesn't fit or one of those over-used "hilarious" internet pictures.

Let's see who's teaming up against me.

Kal - Guy who claims to be a billionaire yet all he does is watch TV and safe, mainstream movies.

regularkarate - bitter redheaded married fat guy who resembles Eric Stoltz from Mask.

Cinephile - cute, adorable guy who reenacts scenes from his families favorite comedies for Christmas.

Suddenly, I don't feel so ganged up on by this group of misfits.

If I had a billion dollars, the last thing I'd care about is what someone on an internet message board that averages like 100 posts a day does.

Will Britney Be Matthew Perry's New TV Friend?

The New York Post's Liz Smith herself admits it's a "long shot," but nonetheless reports that some NBC mucky-mucks believe Britney Spears could be just the ticket to play opposite Matthew Perry in a new sitcom. The tentatively titled Occasional Wife has the Friends alum attached to play a guy who persuades a young, wacky artist to pose as his missus, so as to bolster his career. Assessing Spears' fit for the female lead, one Peacock insider tells Smith, "There's something about her that just connects with the audience.... They want her to succeed now in spite of her adversity."

there isn't really anything great in the way of new falls shows . I watched most of the pilots a few months back and the only one that might keep my attention is Pushing Daises because the main girl is a Zooey Deschanel (sp.) knockoff. It's a ripoff of that French Amelie style and the special power of the main character isn't exactly a new theme in shows these days. So really, the only new show that I like is Californication on Showtime but even that isn't a 'great' show but i'll give it time.

I watched the pilot episode for The Big Bang Theory. It's not bad, but I dont think it can be funny after 2-3 episodes. The nerds are funny but its nothing compared to The Office or 30 Rock, and I think after some time of watching the same stuff it will be very boring.

Anybody else seen it? It's a free download on iTunes.

personally, not a fan of shows with canned laughter. I think the best character on that show is the Wolowitz guy. I think he had the best timing. I mean, really with this show, throwing glasses on a guy making him a 'nerd' and the hot girl that falls for the nerd somewhat is very trite.

Really? 'Cause there was more that I didn't like than liked; a lot more, starting with the lead actress. She was too robotic (pun intended) and uncharismatic; all the other cast members felt miscast too. Were the other females, especially the blondes, supposed to look like Russian shemales? Then there was the car crash that caused her to lose her eye, arm and legs, yet her boyfriend had only a scratch on his forehead and was able to perform the surgery on her. He suffered more injury when she threw him against the window than the big rig flipping their car over four times and crashing into a light pole. That just really stuck out to me in trying to suspend disbelief, almost like not noticing the obvious use of wires and when the guys are pulling on them when she jumps buildings.

It felt like the show was trying to be another Heroes, with the learning how to use the "powers" and even the first bionic woman calling herself a "freak." But it also is ripping off other superheroes with the aforementioned building jump scene from Spider-Man and the fast running in Superman: The Movie.

I caught up on three new shows last night.

REAPER is a great idea for a show (a slacker is forced into action when a deal his parents made with the devil requires him to become a bounty hunter for hell) but the execution wasn't quite interesting enough.  The main character and his best friend are the same straight man/hyper funny guy pairing that we've seen in every slacker story ever (including Chuck but it works there so far) and it's another Heroes bandwagon show with the main character developing a superpower with a pretty lame payoff in this episode.

But it had a few good moments here and there that made me think it could get better if they find their stride soon enough.  Plus, Leland Palmer is the devil.  I'll give it another episode or two and hope for the best but ideally, this would have been made as a movie 10-12 years ago starring Ben Affleck and Jack Black.

I liked JOURNEYMAN more than Raikus did but I agree with him pretty much.  I can see myself watching the show week after week but I said the same thing about The Nine last year and only watched the first episode, so we'll see how that goes.

And DIRTY SEXY MONEY is pretty much Bret Easton Ellis' Arrested Development.  It's not as great of a show as Six Feet Under (mentioned only because this was created by one of the better writers on that show) and I don't expect it to last because the characters are SO unlikable and not Desperate Housewives catty, but I'm in so far.  The biggest complaint I have is that it could be more biting.  It feels like they're holding way back because they're not on HBO or Showtime.  But I'm preparing for its cancellation already.

NBC presents shows, strategy at upfront
By Paul J. Gough and Nellie Andreeva   3 Apr 2008 11:34am EDT

"In front" is the new upfront. That was the message at NBC's upfront presentation Wednesday in New York, held six weeks before its competitors unveil their schedules in May.

The presentation began with a clip of Steve Carrell as The Office lead Michael Scott opining about advertising, a fitting intro to the event where NBC announced the series pickup of a long-rumored spinoff from the Emmy-winning NBC comedy. NBC's programming chief Ben Silverman said that the entire creative team of Office is behind the spinoff, but declined to give any details.

"The watermarked idea will not be shared today," he said.

Silverman fended off repeated requests to elaborate, but noted that the show's cast is so deep that there's more to be explored with the characters that aren't in a half hour or even an hour.

"You may see some of the actors on that show on the other show," he said.

The Office spinoff will premiere after the Super Bowl Feb. 1. It will then move into its regular Thursday 9:30 p.m. time slot, running behind the original Office.

As expected, NBC's returning series include veteran "ER," which will come back for a 15th and final season featuring original cast member Noah Wyle, as well as Office, which has been picked up for 28 episodes, including four one-hour episodes to air at beginning of season. Also coming back are "Law & Order: SVU," Deal or No Deal, "Law & Order," Lipstick Jungle, Medium, Friday Night Lights and Dateline.

They join previously renewed Heroes, Chuck, Life, Biggest Loser and Celebrity Apprentice.

"All of your favorites are coming back," Silverman said.

There will be no drama repeats in the 10 p.m. hour on Monday, Wednesday, Thursdays and Sunday where all series, including "ER," will air only originals. Several other dramas, including Heroes and Chuck, will also air with no repeats.

Sit Down Shut Up

I have really high hopes for this show. It was originally created by Mitch Hurwitz and is being executive produced by Bill Oakley & Josh Weinstein, who in my opinion were the best writers/showrunners the simpsons ever had. Therefore this show will be the best thing on fox next year, then get cancelled the following season.

If you take Boogie Nights and American Beauty, you get Swingtown. Always been a fan of Molly Parker, so that was the main reason I watched, and she is the best character of the show. It was an okay pilot, would have gotten rid of a couple of the kids' storylines. Don't know how it will sustain a season to season plot though.

Seth Rogen makes a porno
Showtime greenlights comedy series for 2009
Source: Variety

Seth Rogen is looking to make a porno-based comedy for Showtime.

Rogen and production partner Evan Goldberg are developing a comedy series for the pay cabler about three twentysomethings who learn about life and love while running a pornography shop.

Rogen and Goldberg will exec produce the as-yet untitled project.

Matthew Bass, who is credited as an assistant to both comedy filmmakers on "Pineapple Express" and "Superbad," will pen the script and co-exec produce.

Rogen, who stars in Kevin Smith's recently released "Zack and Miri Make a Porno," is also working with Goldberg on Mandate Pictures comedy "Jay and Seth vs. the Apocalypse."

Among a number of cablers who are active on the development side, Showtime already has several comedies greenlit to series for next year, including "Nurse Jackie" starring Edie Falco and "United States of Tara" from scribe Diablo Cody.

Showtime plans to bow "Tara" Jan. 18, along with the season premieres of "The L Word" and "Call Girl."

I watched Glee tonight. Yeah, I know. But someone told me the other night that it was good, and there was nothing on while I was killing time for Top Chef, so decided to give it a chance... and it was actually very funny. I had no interest in it because the way they were promoting it looked like they were jumping on the High School Musical bandwagon, but the show is well written and the singing is a very minor aspect of the show. It almost has a American Beauty vibe to it.

And while we're at it, what's with Project Runway getting rid of the edgy designers at the start of the season, and now realizing the crappy ones need to go?

OMG, this post makes me come off as gay, doesn't it?

Community has promise. It's also got Chevy Chase, Joel McHale, Pete's wife from 'Mad Men', a cute blonde chick and tons of movie references. This weeks episode (http://www.hulu.com/watch/97950/community-spanish-101) had a montage set to Aimee Mann's "Wise Up" that was laugh out loud funny.  Also: it was created by Scud: The Disposable Assassin co-creator Dan Harmon, which means I have to watch until it's cancelled.

HaHa. Of course, after I read this and logged off, it was on and I had to watch the train wreck. It played like an extended AXE bodyspray commercial. And there's a reason those are only 30 seconds long.

Glee is a really fun show. Jessalyn Gilsig makes that show worth watching. her character is insane and i hate her. and i can't wait to watch all her plans get foiled.

i enjoy Modern Family too but i think TV execs needs to remember.. not ALL new comedy shows need to have a documentary feel. the characters don't HAVE to talk to a camera crew following them. this show better be the end of that.

as for Community, im amazed anyone cares about that show. Joel McHale terribly miscast. i know hes not likable and thats the point.. but i'm not even INTERESTED in seeing his character develop. he unfortunately comes across that unlikable. otherwise i'd wanna watch since Chevy, John Oliver and Donald Glover is great trio.

i disagree about McHale being unlikeable. the look on his face when he found out Chevy paid for him to be his partner sold me that he had a soul. that being said, who cares if his character develops? the show is funny and that's enough for me. do i watch the office because i hope michael scott develops?

yeah mchale was too much of a douche in the first two episodes, but it seems like with every episode they're massively tweaking down the doucheness - I think whatever focus group they tested the movie with had the same response.

Glee is a really fun show. Jessalyn Gilsig makes that show worth watching. her character is insane and i hate her. and i can't wait to watch all her plans get foiled.

But Jane Lynch is more INSANE!

Quote from: MacGuffin on September 24, 2009, 01:09:22 AMIt almost has a American Beauty vibe to it.

Scratch that. The show is like Election, but with songs.

Glee is a really fun show.

I like it too but some of the musical numbers are just painful to watch. I had to turn the channel last night when the teacher dude started busting out the Thong Song. I wish they'd give the girls (particular the awesome black girl) more screentime. There's only so much white guys dancing/lip synching one can stomach.

That's kind of the point, though.  Everyone involved is awkward and ridiculous.  They accept it because singing and dancing makes them feel good.  It's not meant to be cool in any regard.

We've all seen that white guy at the wedding party that really shouldn't be doing that break-dancing move because he looks retarded and is probably going to split his pants once again.  Everyone shouts, "Thanks for ruining another wedding, bar mitzvah, dog show, monster truck rally, etc. Uncle Marty!"  He pulls the move(s) off in typical fashion and is beaming after the performance.  Of course until he gets his second DUI in two years.  Fucking drunk.

All I'm saying is that not even to save the entire planet from some kind of terminal plague or zombie epidemic should that white ass teacher be dancing. It's not cool. It's not funny, not even in a "look how awkward and goofy that is" kind of way. It's an abomination.

I believe i'm speaking out of turn here, since i've never watched Glee before.

But isn't there something better playing during this time slot? What audience is this show aiming for?

My favorite Jane Lynch line: "If you are even one minute late, I will go to the animal shelter and get you a kitty cat. I will let you fall in love with that kitty cat. And then, one cold, dark night, I will steal into your house, and I will punch you in the face."

i thought Community was pretty good last night.

*might not be exact*

"you say, "Stop," he'll say "Hammer time!"

the blonde learning about the female "two at a time" bathroom thing was funny.

I watched modern family for a while.  I find a lot of it funny, but the wholesome endings to every episode ruin it for me.  The characters need to be just a little meaner.

Is no one else watching Bored to Death?  It's fantastic.  The tone is unique, the performances great, and it's just fun to watch.  It deserves its own thread.

'Bored to death' is part of my sunday TV night. Just really inventive. It cements once again why Ted Dansen is a great comic actor that can do almost anything.
