Post by: BonBon85 on February 02, 2003, 02:28:01 PM
What's your favorite use of music in a PTA movie? You can discuss both the score as well as regular songs.

I'm partial the use of "One" in Magnolia and Brion's score in PDL.

Tough call.  "Sister Christian" in Boogie Nights is classic.  I also loved  "He Needs Me" in Punch-Drunk Love.

Nobody mentions Wise Up because it is to obvious to mention. But isn't it the best use of music in a PTA movie?

I personally think so
Haven't seen PDL though

Yeah, Wise Up is the obvious one. But aside from that, God Only Knows just made Boogie Nights so much greater for me. It made the ending really moving...I'm a big Pet Sounds fan.

Long push-in on Melora Walters, Oscar-nominated Aimee Mann song... the best cut to black in the history of cinema.

Sydney- Jon Brion/Michael Penn's demented rendition of christmas music, film noir style.

Boogie Nights- Do your thing, Livin' thing, Spill the Wine, Jessie's Girl

Magnolia- I take Jon Brion's ever-evolving score over Aimee Mann any day (although I still love Mann)

Punch-Drunk Love- Brion's score, especially during the scene where everything's happening at once in the warehouse (am i the only one who was fucking annoyed by the shelley duvall song?)

Jon Brion & Michael Penn - Tokens To Cash

(I put up the soundtrack for download a months ago (with the help of sphinx) - if you want the mp3 pm me - its so funky)

BOOGIE NIGHTS
ELO - Livin Thing     Best fucking credits song! It fits so well - especially with the cool title cards with character and actor name!!

Special mention - Sniff N Tears - Drivers Seat - soooo perfect placement for when Thomas Jane (Todd Parker - I love that name - so good) rocks up

"full fuckin race cams" :D

MAGNOLIA
Driving Sideways (played when Solomon Solomon is yelling at Whiz Kid and he throws the keys on the desk - its soooooooo subtle yet sooooooo cool - i love it)

PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE

Now for my sad confession.  My first PTA film was this weekend with Punch Drunk Love.  I really liked it and rented Magnolia the next night...really liked that one too.

I have yet to see Hard Eight or even Boogie Nights.

one of the best directers ever in this respect, better then scorsese

see marty may have set the standerd, but i think pta is open with his music

god just look at boogie nights

the ohio players, the beach boys, elo, night ranger, roberta flack

and one hit wonders like lonley boy by andrew gold

i still think magnolia needed to have a more open soundtrack, look how powerful that donnie smith scene is with supertramp playing

all though " wise up" is one of the best moments in film history

this is kind of a given but cameron crow is pretty fucking great too , but vanilla sky suffered a Bit with the inclusion of REM And radiohead

it just felt awkward like he was trying to fit it in

how many people have ever heard " feel flows" before he used it

Using old songs can be great, and certain directors have great talents for digging stuff up. Especially Tarentino!  I loved when he used Stuck In the Middle With You in Resevoir Dogs and Midnight Confessions in Jackie Brown.  Moonlight Mile had an exceptional soundtrack with older folk/acoustic/60's music. :)

Yeah, I actually play the score more than the soundtrack these days. My favorite is the "Chance of Rain" piece... perfect for the most emotional section of the film. That is one emotionally exhausting movie. I mean that as a compliment, of course.

Title: "Hard Eight
Post by: filmcritic on June 13, 2003, 03:25:30 PM
The rest of the "Hard Eight" soundtrack is excellent! If you listen in the background when you watch the movie, you can hear a great score from Jon Brion and Michael Penn. For example, the music that plays when the title comes across the screen and the late night scene when John and Clementine drive off to Niagra Falls. Now, if you have the film on DVD, you can click on the 2nd commentary track and hear some of the music when it plays. But what's interesting is the music that plays when Clementine and John drive off doesn't take place in that scene. So, where can you find the music to "Hard Eight"??? I tried Kazaa Lite, but no luck. Can someone please give me a website or some device for the music to the movie besides "Clementine's Loop"?

I'm too fucking late, but anyway:
I just have seen "Sydney" one time, so I can't really remember some music, but..

BOOGIE NIGHTS
"Driver's Seat" combined with Philip Baker Halls introduction as well as Thomas Jane's. So amazing!
"The Big Top" (thanks MacGuffin!) by Michael Penn
And of course the "Clementine's Loop"!
And last but not least "Spill the Wine".

MAGNOLIA
"One" in the title sequence.
The Supertramp-song during the bar scene.

I couldn't agree more with you on that selection for a closer. Something about it just really works well. The opener of (You've Got) The Best Of My Love is a lively song to start off with . I grew up in the late 70's and early 80's, so mostly all of this music kind of hits home. Actually, whe whole album's soundtrack fits so perfectly to the movies era and especially some scenes. Sister Christian/Jessie's Girl while the ripoff scene went down was great. The Machine Gun dance scene was especially good too.

Boogie Shoes
Spill The Wine
You Sexy Thing

For some reason, I am hooked on this film........

OK PTA freaks, my guess is that he selects his own music instead of someone else doing the soundtrack score for him? I saw no credits for it on imdb except for the music made for the movie by Michael Penn.

In "Hard Eight" it's right at the beginning over the credits.
In "Boogie Nights" it plays over the "On The Prowl" scene.
In "Magnolia" it plays during the prologue when Sydney Barringer is loading the shotgun for his parents.

Other movie scenes that would be greatly improved if they were retrofitted with "Clementine's Loop":

1. Gary Cooper waiting out the final minutes for the train in "High Noon"

2. The nervous soldiers making small talk while awaiting the German tanks in "Saving Private Ryan" (this would replace the godawful, movie-derailing stories that Matt Damon and Edward Burns tell while they're waiting)

3. Charlton Heston riding up the beach at the end of "Planet of the Apes"

4. Sulley thinking he's watching Boo go through the trash compactor in "Monsters Inc."

5. The final Death Star trench run in "Star Wars"

I'm pretty sure (with Boogie Nights at least) that someone helped him with the soundtrack selecting tracks and whatnot)...I don't have my disc with me right now, but I'll get back to you on that one.

I have the 2 disc DVD and the credits do not list a specific person for the music score or arrangement. The first music credit is for Michael Penn, who also wrote and performed original music on it. So my guess is he was responsible for the arrangement. He is also listed on the back cover for the general listing of "Music by".

The reason I ask is b/c several of the scenes were written especially for the song like Boogie Shoes....he goes in and buys these Italian leather high heels. Spill The Wine starts the pool party scene off, I believe. It just seems to me that PTA selected the music and there is no definitive person on the credits that I can find except Exec. Music Producer, Music Execs, Soundtrack Mixer, etc....

by the way, the songs I prefer are wise up in magnolia and the touch in boogie nights, also because they tall a lot about one of the interpretations that can be given to the movies. the whole sequence with sister christian and jesse's girl is also great!

For the Record: Boogie Nights

Allie was live from Rockwell Table & Stage in Los Feliz previewing their latest dinner and show called "For The Record: "Boogie Nights".

Stimulate your sensations this summer as everything is growing over at Rockwell with For The Record: Boogie Nights. Beginning on June 7, the space at 1714 N Vermont Ave will no longer operate under three distinct names but instead the entire venue will be referred to as Rockwell and include a bi-level outdoor dining space as well as a newly remodeled live music performance space. While renovations will continue throughout the summer, "For The Record" co-creators Shane Scheel and Christopher Lloyd Bratten choose to present a show adapted from the works of Los Angeles director Paul Thomas Anderson for a summer experience that Angelenos will not easily forget.

For patrons coming to see For The Record: Boogie Nights the evening will seem very familiar as many of the films Paul Thomas Anderson has created and directed tell stories about California and Californians. Angelenos will be mesmerized as they watch music performances by some of LA's most skilled actors, enjoy a full food and drink menu and relish the ample space now provided. For The Record: Boogie Nights begins Thursday, June 7 and runs until Saturday, August 4. Weekly performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 9PM. Tickets range from $30 - $35, for ticket information please call (323) 661-6163 (ext 20) or visit http://www.fortherecordlive.com/.

For The Record: Boogie Nights will include a selection of songs and scenes from Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood and Punch-Drunk Love.  The evening will include an array of music styles from 70s-80s Disco to the Grammy and Academy Award-nominated Aimme Mann with specifics songs including "Sister Christian," "Brand New Key," "Jesse's Girl," "Wise Up," "One," "Boogie Shoes," "God Only Knows," "Aint No Stoppin' Us Now."

Aimee Mann was on the latest Sound Opinions (http://www.wbez.org/sound-opinions-aimee-mann-104832), and it's quite good.

They bring up PTA a couple times, and she talks about him briefly. This is the relevant part. It's at 8:20 in case anyone's wondering.

Tom Sharpling, Paul Thomas Anderson, Joel and Ethan Coen: who was the more talented director/auteur that you've worked with?

[laughs] That's a funny question... Paul Thomas Anderson is... I spent way way more time with Paul on set, so I... the Coen brothers thing was literally like 5 minutes and then you know, like, they seemed very nice, they seemed very quiet, and then I was out, you know... Paul Thomas Anderson is an incredible director, and watching him work with actors, I think he kind of gets the best performances out of actors. He's really amazing.

I´ve always feel that there are some bits of music in pta´s films that remind me his past movies. Like if  there was a strange connection throug the music. Here are some examples i want to share, if you listen closely to the songs you can feel an escence of the films i mention.
.
In Punch Drunk Love: "He really needs me" min 0:30-0:45 reminds me Sydney
In There Will be blood "H/W Hopes of new fields"  min 0:40 -0:50 reminds me Boogie Nights
In The Master: Duke Ellington´s Lotus Flower reminds me Magnolia, min 0:20 -0:30

And of course many of the music composed for The Master has a big connection with There will be blood. Maybe i´m just crazy or something but i´m sure it could be a delivered choice by pta and i find it really great!

I spent this morning listening to The Thin Red Line score on a loop, thanks to Cinephilia And Beyond (http://cinephilearchive.tumblr.com/post/69321134112/one-of-my-favorite-screenplays-arguably-the), and was struck by the huge similarities between it and the Magnolia score. Not just the tone of it, but certain things almost seem lifted directly.

A quick google found some posts here and there from people who thought the same, even the music editor of TTRL, Lee Scott, (http://www.soundtrack.net/content/article/?id=272) who says:

Quote
PM: I especially admire the edit where Zimmer's score segues with Charles Ives in "Journey to the Line." It's brilliant.

Lee Scott: That was my idea. Hans wrote a piece to copy the Ives but it didn't fly. However, that piece appears on the soundtrack album though it wasn't in the film. "Journey to the Line" was the first piece of music Hans composed that clicked for the film. Here is some super music editing trivia: In the film Magnolia there is a cue that copies the transition from Hans' score into the Ives. It must have been in their temp. They copied an edit!

Does this affect my appreciation of the Magnolia score? Not a bit. But it certainly is curious.

I actually like the Jon Brion version vastly better, though. Not nearly as repetitive. Listening to "Journey to the Line" I keep waiting for it to resolve or shift and sort of want to pull my hair out.

I fixed your link. The YouTube mod kind of pulled up the first video automatically.

I think this is the one in particular:

Although, doesn't the Magnolia score also have that pizzicato thing elsewhere? Where is that?

Here's the Zimmer:

I finally got around to watching Boogie Nights on blu for the first time.. I've never entirely listened to the soundtrack either, so doing that right now I checked out the original "The Touch" and noted that it was released in '86 and popularized in The very first Transformers movie. IMDB seems to confirm that Boogie Nights' timeline is '77-'84. The studio session takes place in'83. So, is Paul making a sly joke that Dirk has a secret talent for songwriting and he sold this song to Stan Bush which became a huge hit? That his stuff is "really that good"? I never considered it, I always just took it to be a cover at face value.

I love the possibility of this.  I never worked out the timeline before--I always assumed Dirk and Reed decided to cover it because they thought it was a cool song.

On second thought, the joke would be that they stole this song from him because he doesn't own the magic on those tapes
