Title: Has anyone here ever met PTA? Tell us your stories....
Post by: Marty McSuperfly on January 10, 2003, 03:22:58 AM
I'm interested in finding out what the guy is like when folk meet him in real life. Is he quiet? Friendly? Moody? Funny? etc I'm sure we'd all like to know what the guy is really like when he comes face to face with fans.

Back to PTA---I met PTA at the Toronto film fest. It was the showing of Punch Drunk Love and everyone was around Adam Sandler. So I walked up to Paul and the first thing I said was how much I love his films. He got a little uneasy and just said "thanks", I understand because I find it awkward when someone compliments you alot. You don't know whether to say yeah your right Im the best, or say your wrong Im not that good. So I just said it must be strange having people complimenting you all the time and he said "its nice but too much" And then we began talking about film and how I wanted to make film. And then I ruined it, I gave him this paper with an idea that I had for a short film. At the moment I am really embarrassed about that because the idea wasn't good, I just thought it was at the time. So yeah it was a good experience until I made a fool of myself by giving a shity film idea. haha oh well, thats life.

My wife's cousin looks a lot like P.T.

He came to our wedding and when I first saw him, I was like "Paul, you came!", then he smiled and had braces, then I thought it might be Tom Cruise, then I thought it might be P.T. making fun of Tom Cruise, then I just cried.

FUCK just wrote like a motherfuckin script about the rendezvous with PTA in my little fuckin country and now the posting.php page was expired or something. . .   :x So I'll keep it short for now:

I met PTA at the premiere of P-DL at the International Film Festival Rotterdam yesterday evening..
He came to introduce the movie and do a very funny and nice Q&A afterwards...

As soon as the credits roll and were ending I decided to go and ask Paul to sign my copy of the shootingscript.. He asked if my name was with TH or just TOM and I replied with TO... he wrote For Tom , then his name , and then a funny smiley face underneath it. Real Cool, so I thanked him and congratulated him on the movie, I said it was great.

I got back to my seat, and the Q&A started, with a lot of random BS obvious questions. So I decided to ask a real diehard one:

What is a 4-84?

He didn't really get it at first, but when I noticed he also used it in Boogie Nights and now in P-DL he kinda remembered and said he didn't use it on purpose, it just sounded like a good number to be said by people.. Get some of them 4-84's ... or something like that, he thought it was a funny combination or number. .
Although probally nobody even knew what the fuck I was asking, he answered it funny, and I was pleased, the Q&A went on . . lotta laugs, PTA was good.. When the festival director -who was standing next to PTA- said they were gonna do just one more question I raised my hand again but unfortunately he didn't see me, 'cause I just wanted to ask: " what's next?"... but too bad..
well, I really had a great evening, here are some snapshots - not paparazzi style, just decent - nothing big - pictures of pta talkin at the Q&A and also standing next to the festival dude..

Here they are, enjoy:

Not really relevant to this thread but I would guess after 20 years of Q&A's and screenings and things, PTA just doesn't want to spend all his time talking to fanboys. Figure he's had about a billion of more or less the same interaction and probably at some point just decided he'd rather cut down on it. So he sneaks in and out of stuff now cause he doesn't really wanna hang out with a bunch of awkward 20/30-something film nerds gushing over him. In my experience, he's always been super friendly but I've also seen him dash for the exits and I totally get why.

It sounds like PTA wrote to that guy at 15, signed his Magnolia screenplay and posed for a photo. What more does he want - blood?!

I don't think he owes anyone anything and to get your nose out of joint over something like that and say you won't watch his films anymore - even films you already love - is ludicrous. Sure, everyone deserves respect. But maybe PTA deserves more respect than to be hounded by crazy fan boys he'd rather not deal with. He's being polite - he doesn't give a shit about you and sometimes that mask slips - he doesn't know you and has no reason to want to engage. Also learn to separate the art from the artist - if it was about being a nice guy Kevin Smith would be one of the best directors ever. But it's not and the majority of his films suck (partly due to fan service). Never meet your heroes I guess. Just appreciate the work.

None of this changes the amazing work he's made and continues to make.

I find no reason to excuse PTA's behavior in that case. Dropping the pen in that way seems especially cruel. He owes his fans a base level of respect. If he really hates dealing with them for too long, maybe just say "sorry guys I have to run, thanks for coming."
Title: Re: Re: Phantom Thread
Post by: Alethia on November 09, 2017, 01:07:37 PM
Felt the need to jump in here rather randomly, but I saw him in Brooklyn this past August introducing a few Demme screenings and moderating some Q and As (I attended each day of course) and my experience of him there stands exactly opposite of the behavior alleged above. He could not have been more gracious, polite, appreciative, or giving of his time. Seriously, there was a line snaking outside the screening room consisting of fans wanting to get pics, autographs, give him gifts, etc., and he stood and talked to each person with a huge smile on his face the entire time. So, maybe NYFF nerves and a palpably divided reaction to Vice contributed to his alleged prickliness? I was also at the NYFF Vice screening a few years back and he seemed really jazzed and thrilled to be there so...I dunno....
Title: Re: Re: Phantom Thread

It is very possible that the person writing this comment was pissed that the meaningful note he received from PTA was nothing important for him and then saw him dropping a pen by accident as an asshole move. Or it was an asshole move. Well. I have no conclusion to make about this.
Title: Re: Re: Phantom Thread
Post by: Drenk on November 09, 2017, 02:57:36 PM
It makes me think of how Franzen was angry at the way people were creating the image of a saint for David Foster Wallace—because he wasn't. And Wallace was his friend. (He was also angry because his friend killed himself.) Like for PTA, the assholeness of Wallace is present in the books, but it is elevated because it isn't human behavior anymore but included in fiction/characters/themes. But we are used to celebrate the artists as good human beings when they do good art—more so in show business and in Hollywood.

I had a friendly what with Matthew Weiner (and he was very friendly with everyone), but I knew he could be a bully in a working environment. (Once again: you can also see how it made it into Mad Men.)
Title: Re: Re: Phantom Thread
Post by: Jeremy Blackman on November 09, 2017, 03:18:11 PM
I really do think an artist should feel obligated to have respect for their fans. But failing to live up to that doesn't diminish their work for me. I try not to deify my favorite artists. And in many cases, those flaws might be a core part of their work, in the way Wilder described. (Post of the month btw.)

You could make a similar argument about LVT's flaws being integral to his work. And I guess I tried to in that thread. In other more egregious cases, maybe not so much.

Having a little bit of experience of film festivals from the filmmaker's perspective on a small scale (and having friends who have had the experience on a larger scale), I would never presume to judge a person's character from one interaction, or even a series of interactions, in that type of setting. You're generally operating on little sleep, often immediately after travelling, you're already physically and emotionally drained from that final push to get the movie in a finished state, you don't always have time to eat when you should, you compensate for your exhaustion with as much caffeine as you can get your hands on, you're being pulled in every direction, your attention is constantly being demanded from multiple sides at once... a person would have to be a literal saint to get through it without ever getting curt or abrupt or laughing at the wrong thing or inadvertently causing offense to someone who may or may not have any reasonable right to be offended. For anyone who leans to the introverted side of the fence, it's an utterly overwhelming experience, and I can't imagine one you ever get fully used to.

That's not to say he's not a dick. Maybe he is a dick! But I would be unable to vote guilty in a court of dickishness based solely on that testimony.

It's disappointing to read that guy's comment and from the looks of his twitter he actually does interact with a fair few industry people.
Having said that who knows how we'd react if we were in PTA's position. Im not excusing him being a dick but from the sounds of his behaviour it sounds like he's being consumed by a big ball of stress and anxiety and maybe add in a shitty nights sleep and you get someone trying to get from point A to point B in a foul mood with people trying to stop him every 5 seconds. I know what happens when Im stressed and I can be a fucking asshole but Im a nice person most of the time. Who knows?

I just joined the forum, I've lurked for a long time and have always enjoyed people's insights. I dont have a PTA encounter but I do have a weird Daniel Day Lewis encounter. It was August a year ago and myself and two friends went hiking in the mountains of County Wicklow, Ireland (it's the county south of Dublin). DDL has lived there for years, as has John Boorman, it's quite literally Zardoz territory. We were about 90 minutes into our hike which was this winding trail that climbed a mountain through various forests. We hadnt encountered any other hikers in about 40 minutes when suddenly these two sasquatch like figures appeared from a higher up trail, staggering their feet to stop themselves running anymore downhill. Then as they started walking towards us, in the middle of fucking nowhere, I realised, it was Daniel Day Lewis. As we passed each other we all just did the regular hiker thing and exchanged a polite "hello". He was with his kid and we were walking fast in opposite directions so I didnt want to bother him. At the time I would have really liked to ask him what was going on with him and PTA  since there was a report around that time that they were reuniting for a fashion project. Ultimately it didnt matter, we all got the good news later that year. Anyway that's my story, I encountered DDL halfway up a mountain, I chose not to bother him and in that one hello he seemed like a nice guy!

I remember someone here describing a Q&A after an early screening of Punch-Drunk at a college, someone asking a predictably awful meandering question, and PT making fun of him for laughs. This isn't unique to PT, screenings are usually full of film nerds with subpar social skills trying to prove to their heroes how smart they are with their questions or why they're special, but, you know, you can shut someone down without being an ass, too.

I think that may have been me, asking about why he switched editors at NYFF, which, I'm sure I was stuttering and trying to sound smart or whatever, and he wasn't being a dick, he just kinda made a joke as if the question I was asking was "Did you switch editors to make the film shorter than your last one?".

Or maybe you're referring to another screening of PDL where a dude asked a really really weird question about the frogs that Paul kind of deflected, and then said to the next audience member "Youre not gonna be weird too, are you?" Fun Xixax historical anectdote: That's also the origin of the username AntiDumbFrogQuestion.

I mean let's be honest, most Q&A questions are fucking terrible, and its nerve-wracking enough to be on stage to begin with, even when you're getting good questions, so I really don't see an issue with PTA cracking jokes about it.

I've met him in person at these events a few times over the years and he's generally just seemed sort of stressed about the screening and not super into chatting it up with a bunch of strangers that feel as if they have some special connection to him, or that he owes them something. Which is totally fine. He's an artist, not a star. And the art he makes is edgy, and challenging, and often about difficult people, and there's really no reason to expect him to treat fans like he's Tom Hanks or Keanu Reeves or whatever.

They say never meet your heroes, but as I get older, the idea of having heroes is kind of fucking weird, anyway. And the idea of trying to make saints of deeply flawed creative types is kind of stupid. Isn't it enough to just love someone's work? Why do we have to indulge this fantasy that maybe if we get to meet them they'll think we're cool and end up being our best friend? Does that make his films any better? As far as I'm concerned, he can be as prickly as he wants as long as he keeps making dope shit.

EDIT: Also holy shit going back to the beginning of this thread is insane. So much drama and weird posturing back in the early days after the exodus from C&RV. Someone oughta write a book.

I love Paul's movies but I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if that YT comment is representative of a lot of his behaviour IRL. It doesn't really bother me, the separation between the idealised artist and the man is something I came to terms with at a pretty young age.

I can seperate the art from the artist no problem. I think the issue is more so that PTA presents himself in press situations as this mild mannered, soft spoken, polite cool guy and then by these accounts CAN be a collosal asshole to his fans.

Yeah he doesnt owe anybody anything but I'd rather there be no fascade. The way people are describing these encounters sounds reminiscent of the time an interviewer asked him the leading question of whether Tom Cruise had been shown The Master. PT got understandably vicious but save that shit for people who deserve it, not people who enjoy your work and like you.

That question about Tom Cruise was fucking dumb—and his issue was that he had answered it many times and everyone knew the answer. But he has been asked the same question in the Charlie Rose show and stayed polite. But this is a great exemple of him showing this side in public. Then: come on, everyone tries to act good in front of a camera. That's human.

Quite frankly, all these stories just paint the picture of real dude. He's not a saint, but I also don't think he's some horrible guy who always treats people like shit.  There's too many stories and first hand accounts of him being super cool to fans and his co-workers etc. Like many have said, it is weird(and honestly unhealthy) to hero worship, but to me it is equally weird to be like "oh we have proof he's not perfect and has been an ass at times? Fuck him, his films were always trash anyway".

No he can be however he wants. I guess I'm just surprised to hear he can be the polar opposite to how he conducts himself in promo situations and also because I had heard from past Cigs And Red Vines administrators that he was a genuinely nice guy when they met him (think it was Modage). But people can be many things, I'm sure he can be friendly and other times pissy, everyone is and it was naive of me to think he might be otherwise. It makes sense though considering the work.

He's human and he makes great art about troubled complicated people so I suppose I shouldnt be surprised that he might be the same. As has been mentioned before he's REALLY GOOD at hiding where his ideas come from. For instance David Lynch and Tarantino characters talk like those directors but it's hard to say that PTA's characters sound like him or possess his thoughts/feelings because he becomes so vague and slippery in interviews. The most you can get about Paul is that he makes emotionally resonant works but also loves fart jokes. Even that comes from a second hand source. It's in the work too of course, his movies are hilarious!

Its hard to find details on things. I remember a late Phillip Seymour Hoffmann interview where he talked about meeting Paul and Paul's new girlfriend, who he was in love with, in a restaurant. And Paul grabbed him and started wrestling with him in the middle of the restaurant just like Master and Freddie when they reconcile after the prison scene. The point being there are probably really personal moments and feelings going into his work but he never discusses it publicly and talks broadly about things so it becomes easy for me to think that a lot of the work might be imagined.

There's also the conflict with the theme of something like Magnolia. He said on WTF "It's about my Dad" with a lot of effection in his voice. And he's always talks about how much he loves his Dad, how great a guy he was. But then he makes an entire movie about Dad's being the biggest pieces of shit! What?

I agree with all that, but back on the idea of PTA being an asshole to his fans, I can probably come off the exact same way right before I give a lecture after little to no sleep—and I'm generally regarded as a gregarious, friendly and generous guy. Also, I'm in an environment where I'm often crowded by people I don't know wanting to talk to me. I used to patiently take time to chat with everyone. I slowly learned I had to give that up—I can't just chat with everyone, it takes forever. But in avoiding chatting with people, I haven't found a way to do it where I don't come off as an asshole. And I'm not even a celebrity or a renowned director who has to deal with this *constantly*.

Still, even on my worst days, when I come in grumpy and don't want to deal with anyone, I can turn off the attitude *like that* if I need to, like for an interview or whatever.

He's a filmmaker, not Jimmy Fallon. I've meet him twice and seen him at five different events, never detected a shred of assholery, but even if I saw what was described I wouldn't feel appalled or let it shape my perception. Judge the man by his work, as long as he's not sexually harassing anyone he's a-ok.

I was so jazzed to meet him in a 2003 showing of PDL (BAM put together a little fest of 2002's best) that upon learning the venue added an additional screening of the film, this one to be introduced by PTA and PSH as opposed to the Q&A that was to follow the original screening I copped tickets to, I left in the middle of the movie to see him intro in the auditorium next door, hanging out in the back. When he finished I ambushed him in between both auditoriums and shook his hand telling him I left in the middle of the movie because I had to meet him to which he replied something like, "well get back in there and watch", which was a really sweet was to shake me off as he darted right into the theater to watch some himself. Spoke to him twice more that night, for probably a total of 60-seconds notwithstanding my Q at the Q&A and left thinking he's one of the nicest guys I've ever meet. He was surprised I had the PDL DVD early because it was a few days away from release, but I bought one at Kim's Video which always had stuff a bit early. Still own the DVD with his and Hoffman's sig.

Friends of mine have seen him or met him personally at various NYC functions

Someone I know got a picture with him, while during another instance PTA declined photos at NYFF for Inherent Vice and was in a rush

I suppose it just depends on the event and timing naturally since most fan encounters are awkward scrambles for all involved

What's more important is that he doesn't appear to be some horrible person with abusive secrets

He said in a Boogie era interview that he used to do tons of coke while working a job pre "Sydney". Can't remember what the job was, might have been a courier or some sort of delivery job. You'd need to go through the Boogie interview archive on Cigs and Red Vines for more info.

Some of us must remember this:

QuoteAlthough Anderson is one of the most autobiographical filmmakers of his generation, drawing heavily on his childhood in the San Fernando Valley, most stories about him offer some variation on "very little is known about his early years" or "little is known about Paul's childhood." He has stopped talking to most of his friends from those years, and none of them can say whether he just moved on naturally or broke with his past for some secret reason.

"When he did Magnolia," Stevens says, "I sent word through someone who worked with him to tell Paul it would be great if he could come back for a visit. I'd love to see him. And the answer came: 'Paul doesn't go back.'"

'The Secret History of Paul Thomas Anderson' - Esquire (http://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a4973/paul-thomas-anderson-1008/)

I've heard a LOT of jokes being made in film circles about him being addicted cocaine etc and going to rehab. Never got a source on that.

Isn't there a moment in That Moment when you can sort of see Paul snort some coke? Think it's during the filming of the diner scene (which was a stressful reshoot, right?)

I actually met Paul at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn't want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, "Oh, like you're doing now?"
I was taken aback, and all I could say was "Huh?" but he kept cutting me off and going "huh? huh? huh?" and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like "Sir, you need to pay for those first." At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually "to prevent any electrical infetterence," and then turned around and winked at me. I don't even think that's a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

I live a blessed life.

Last night, I went to screening of PHANTOM THREAD at a fancy house/mixing stage (where the film was actually mixed) in the Hollywood Hills, followed by a reception with PTA, Vicky Krieps, Dylan Tichenor (editor), Mark Bridges (costume designer), Daniel Lupi and JoAnne Sellar.

I talked to PTA for 20 minutes. And then I talked to Dylan Tichenor for around 45 mins.

I've been to several things with him there, but he was always surrounded by too many fanboys for me to have an actual conversation with him, so I never approached him. But this was the right mix of being a smaller crowd and while many people wanted to talk to him, I was probably the only super nerd there, and I had seen the movie 3 times, so I felt like I had things of substance to say.

He was incredibly nice to me. He was shocked that I had seen the film 3 times already. I thanked him for his films and told him how much they have meant to my development, and talked about XIXAX (which he is aware of) and said that I've made so many friends there who all have the common bond of having PTA be the central inspirational artistic figure that got us on this path of loving cinema the way we do. I said I have these friends from all over the world, including a small town in Northern Norway, thanks to his films. He said it warmed his heart to hear that.

We talked about a few things regarding the film. He talked a bit about working without a DP, and I asked him if there was anything he missed about working with Robert Elswit or Mihai Malaimare. He said that Robert was very good at staging things and would give Paul great suggestions to simplify shots. Here, he had his camera guys who he's close with and they would just talk through that stuff in a similar way.

We talked a little bit about how the film went through 3 coloring processes (digital for the DCP, color timing for the 35mm, a separate round of color timing for the 70mm, which was also done for THE MASTER and INHERENT VICE). I asked him about how he adapts the film to the actual location and to the actors. The London house in the film is so central to the feeling of the film. Apparently it was going to be another house, which fell through at the last minute, but they found this house and it turned out to be better, with the amazing staircase. I don't think he had to do much adapting with the actors. He obviously wrote it for Daniel Day-Lewis, but Vicky Krieps (who he just found with taped auditions) was not too far away from what he was imagining when writing. He doesn't really rehearse, he said.

I said my goodbyes and we exchanged thank yous with good eye contact. I felt good about it.

Then I found my way toward Dylan Tichenor. That was a longer conversation about all sorts of things... as far as interesting nuggets about the film, he said that there was a lot that was cut out of it, just various story threads that took away from the main story. I think he said somewhere around 40 scenes were cut out. A very interesting nugget of info that is a spoiler, so I won't detail it here, but basically a major story element that was invented in editing. Which is a common enough thing, and something that I've done myself as an editor. He said that Daniel Day-Lewis was very consistent as an actor, not really changing it up from take to take. Most of the actors were fairly consistent but the others had a little more room to try different things during takes, whereas DDL's changes were fairly subtle. Then we talked about some general editing and movie stuff. This was not a one-on-one conversation, more a group conversation.

Anyway, um, I can die now I guess.

Acting like a Kardashian who constantly gets hounded for autographs and pictures is a little ridiculous, though. How often does he get recognized outside of his own events? These people are the ONLY reason he has a career(as genius as his movies are they always lose the studio money). The LEAST he could do is be warm while explaining he's late and in a rush. He made it seem like it was a chore and an annoyance. It reminded me of the infamous "little Ronnie Howard" comment and when he snapped on that reporter about Tom Cruise. I know this is a fan site but let's be honest.

I was making fun of the guy who claimed PTA was a jerk for dropping some dude's pen.

Those girls better be glad they didn't hand him a pen. He would have dropped it in front of them!

But seriously, he seems like a chill dude.

Are you talking about this incident?

that's a 19 year old me smoking in the bg towards the end of that vid. and yes, paul dropkicked those fucking pens.

I've seen/met him a number of times over the years now, but the first (and still most memorable, I think) was way back in 03 at a screening of Punch-Drunk Love. I was 15, it was Rochester, George Eastman House at the Dryden Theater. My dad, after having told me he couldn't take me, skipped out on work at the last minute, zoomed home and picked me up (totally by surprise) and we floored it 4 hours north, walking into a packed house during the first date scene with Lena, and we stood in the back until the credits. The whole time I was scanning the audience for PTA, couldn't spot him, eventually gave up and just watched the film. As the credits rolled, I looked to my right and saw the man himself wander in, clothes wrinkled as can be (my dad was not impressed, expecting something more along the lines of an older Spielberg or Kubrick-type figure, I guess), and just stood, leaning against the back wall, just a few feet away. I mustered up every last ounce of courage I had, went over and tapped him on the shoulder. He smiled and said, "Hi." I proceeded to vomit out a garbled, half-choked series of words that somehow effectively communicated that I was a huge fan and wanted him to sign my dvd. He smiled and said, "Of course," and gave me a personalized autograph with three scribbled hearts surrounding Barry Egan's profile. And then he took the stage for a Q and A (the most memorable part being when an older lady asked him what in hell the frogs at the end of Magnolia meant...he proceeded to give her a hesitant yet cordial answer, followed by a brief pause, a wide, mischievous grin spreading, then, "And I hope that answers your fucking frog question.") This was also around the time he was just starting to write what became There Will Be Blood, which he described to us merely as, "An adventure film." I believe a few other Xixaxers, currently active or not, might have been there that night. Anyone?

EDIT: I remember now! An old member named ebeaman (with whom I struck up a nice online friendship around that time) was there, I think, and I believe there was a member named Antidumbfrogquestion whose name is obviously a direct reference to PTA's thoroughly charming retort referenced above.

Also Philip Seymour Hoffman's Mom was there   :(

I wish! I've wanted to check out that theater ever since they screened 'The Shining' with it's alternate ending. Great story with your Dad coming to the rescue like that.

I haven't looked yet, but is there a place here where we've shared how we each came to first stand in the warmth of the PTA sun?  (I don't mean having met him, but fallen for his creative charms.)  Cuz I'd love read those as well.

Yeah, right here (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=2480.0)

You'll have to take my word for it, but that is 100% the back of my head in the second pic when I waited for Paul to come out of the old Alice Tully after the PDL press conference. Brought back a lot of memories, wanted to get a pic with him but shied out of it, snapped a few but have no clue what happened to the drive it was on

Directly after this pic was taken I saw a press screening of The Tuxedo at the Lowe's Ewalk. Good day.

Love that theater and area around the Lincoln Center. Jealous you met Paul as he was transitioning to his more zen stage!

Back in 2012, I met briefly a very drunk Paul after a preview screening of The Master. Didn't have long, so the exchange went something like:

Me: "Paul! The 70mm was incredible! Never thought I'd be so into Joaquin Phoenix's pores!"

PTA: "Fuck yeah, man!"

And then the horde took him.

I'll put this here, because the videographer probably won't...  (Make sure you stay until the end.)
