WELCOME TO THE 2008 XIXAX AWARDS!

It's time to nominate!

Send your votes in through PM, following all the rules. The deadline is Saturday March 15th, two weeks from today.

Remember: Any trailer released in 2007 is eligible for Best Trailer even if the film has not yet been released.  You should also try to specify Teaser or Trailer if there were several different versions released.

Note: Grindhouse is considered one film (i.e. Planet Terror and Death Proof together).

Due to the popularity of There Will Be Blood, we will have a runner-up designation for certain awards.

THE RULES:

2. copy the form provided below and paste it into your PM
3. only list the movie in each category, not the person who would win (unless it's an acting category)
4. specify the actor and movie (for the acting categories), like this: Actor - "Movie"
5. use the most common title with foreign films (ask if you're not sure)
6. use full titles ("There Will Be Blood" instead of "TWBB")

Best DVD Release.

Does the Kubrick box count as one or should we limit it to each individual film?

Either. You can vote for the box set, but since they were also individually released, you may vote for an individual flim.

grindhouse shouldn't be one film. in most countrys inthe world death proof and planet terror were separated films. probably no one cares because probably no one is planning on giving one of those a nom for best pic separately...but maybe i do.

Okay, so the annual who is supporting and who is leading questions...

I need clarification on...

-Atonement
-Zodiac
-Amy Ryan in Gone Baby Gone
-Michael Cera in Juno
-Tom Wilkinson in Michael Clayton

I'm assuming that Javier Bardem is leading.

Yeah, as a newcomer to this site, what are the actual criteria for what constitutes a supporting role? Is it amount of time on screen or relative importance to the film? Where do y'all draw the line?

Exiled was on Apple's trailer site starting in July and I saw it at a Sunset strip theater a couple months after that.  Exiled is 2007, right?

Edited with further evidence, from imdb.com's release dates:

USA 13 April 2007 (Wisconsin Film Festival)
USA 23 April 2007 (Newport Beach film festival)
USA 23 June 2007 (New York Asian Film Festival)
USA 31 August 2007 (New York City, New York)

I lived 10 minutes from Newport in April.  I wish I'd known.  But Exiled is 2007 clearly, right, even if some Australia guy comes in and says

Australia 20 October 2006.

Taken from last year's nominating thread, which took it from 2006's thread:
Quote from: Jeremy Blackman on March 21, 2006, 01:31:33 PM
Our "performance" and "supporting performance" categories have caused quite a bit of confusion in the past. The Xixax Awards define these categories a little differently. Notice that we don't have a "leading" category. In other words, performances are performances, and "supporting" performances should really truly be supporting. A supporting performance in the Xixax Awards is usually smaller than a supporting performance in the Oscars.

If you're not sure about a particular performance, you should just ask about it specifically.

Here's my guess, based on past awards (someone please correct if I'm way off):

Atonement - Knightley, McAvoy, and Ronan leading, everyone else supporting.
Zodiac - Gyllenhall, Ruffalo, Downey Jr leading, everyone else supporting.
Amy Ryan, Tom Wilkinson, and Javier Bardem would all be leading, but Michael Cera would be supporting.  I would say for Juno, the only leading performance would be Ellen Page; everyone else in the movie would fall under supporting.

dont be so sensitive buddy, I'm fine if you want to vote for it... what i said is that in IMDb the year always shows next to the title (regardless of the release dates) and that one says 2006. I'm not sure what is our criteria here, if we base our schedule on US release dates, or first release date, or whatever our admins decide.

Title: Re: The 2008 Xixax Awards

If a non-film festival USA release date falls in 2007, then it is eligible. So in the case of Exiled, the NYC, NY release is fine.

The Lives Of Others is also eligible, since the USA release date was in Feb. 2007.

Syndromes and a Century isn't on the official Academy list, but i think it got released in april of 2007.  Will you guys count votes for that film?  Don't care if it has no chance of winning, just want to be sure that my favorite film from last year is at least eligible.

If the HD or Blu-Ray release is different than a standard one in terms of content, then specify. In this case, specify which release: Blade Runner Ultimate Edition (with suitcase), or just the 5 Disc, just Final Cut, etc.

So Casey Affleck is leading in TAoJJbtCRF? (haha), it's a shame because DDL is a lock on leading (and rightly so), I guess this and other obvious categories will have the runner up nod....anyway:

Casey Affleck for either supporting or leading (runner up), whatever is decided.
Title: Re: The 2008 Xixax Awards
Post by: Jeremy Blackman on March 03, 2008, 06:49:35 PM
Affleck is definitely leading, along with Pitt. All the others would be supporting.

Remember our general leading/supporting guideline.

"Supporting" under our system is truly supporting. These are characters whose names you might not remember. They occupy much less screen time than the leads, and they're definitely not the focus of the film. Affleck and Pitt, for example, are the focus of that film, so it would be absurd to call either of them supporting.

Note also that the word "leading" doesn't appear in any of our categories:

Best Female Performance
Best Male Performance

Best Supporting Female Performance
Best Supporting Male Performance

We wanted to get away from the idea of a single lead actor, because the leading vs. supporting paradigm certainly can't describe all (or even most) films.

The result is that the top two acting categories are a bit crowded, and we struggle to find supporting nominations (perhaps because we don't think about supporting performances like we should), but it's all for the greater good.

Please ask all other eligibility questions here.

don't forget how awesome the score for Assassination was.

and how secretly mindblowing the visual effects in Zodiac were.

and if you're thinking about voting for best trailer, Don't! think of The Invasion.

BEST DVD RELEASE

The special editions of their classic animated films Disney have been releasein since last year are all pretty much amazing. This one takes the cup for me because of the amount of extra stuff that is actually cool. For starters, the behind the scenes stuff is not only heartfelt but also filled with an honesty that usually Disney prefers to keep in the background. This is not a DVD for families who will only listen over and over about "the magic" of Disney, but for the fans, the animation geeks who wanna know the ins and outs of how the film was made. That story itself is awesome, with Walt suddenly getting back with passion on an animated project which was gonna be his last, how the friendship of Mowgli and Baloo reflected the friendship of the two chief animators, how the film came at a moment when the animation department had reduced it's numbers to the point that the work done in the 40's by 30 people was being done then by 3, Walt's death and how it affected everyone...That single making of in itself is worth the price.

Add to it deleted scenes and musical numbers, a dozen of rejected songs, hundreds of original sketches of character and set designs and a new transfer which offers the film for the first time in widescreen, vibrant with colors and sounds and you have an awesome dvd. It also has the spanish dubbed version which maybe only latins can understand how incredibly cool it is because of the voice talent involved.

I hope we can make space in our nominations for a Disney film, which I don't know if has happened before.

EDIT: Can we get a final word on Amy Ryan in Gone Baby Gone? And is Tilda Swinton really a lead? I feel like there are so few supporting women with this incredibly lenient definition.

Also, don't forget for Visual Effects: Sunshine, Across the Universe, 300, Zodiac

Yes, that does not sound like supporting.

If you put an actor in the wrong category, we can count him/her in the correct category (as long as you're not doing that intentionally). If you realized you've misplaced an actor, just contact your counter.

Even though it was a shortened version of the scene in the movie, the simple fact that we hadn't heard of Cloverfield when we first saw the trailer is enough to nominate it.  Not to mention that it upstaged Transformers.

And someone hinted at it before but are the fake Grindhouse trailers eligible?

Is The Lives of Others eligible? It won the Oscar last year but it's listed on IMDB as not receiving a theatrical run until Feb 2007.

I'm finding nominations quite interesting this year. What stands out, though, is that this a is an extremely macho year for film.

Oh and please don't overlook Spider-man 3 for Visual Effects. Waste of a film but the birth of the sandman sequence, is the most refined and beautiful 100% CGI (actor driven) sequences of 2007. Zodiac was well used used but not ground-breaking VFX - it also took place at night.
