Title: Nominate!
Post by: Jeremy Blackman on February 05, 2020, 02:25:25 PM
Greetings! It's time to nominate for the 2020 Xixax Awards. This year, we'll be doing a couple things differently:

The final votes will be cast through Google Forms, and we'll post the results all in one thread.

Acting categories are revamped. We're going to try out Leading and Supporting, with the conventional definitions that come with those terms. If you're not sure if a performance is leading or supporting, go ahead and guess (and your nomination will be counted) or ask for clarification here.

The rest will be the same:

Nominations will last for about 2 weeks starting now. So let's go! Post your nominations here in any format, with any level of completion. Vote for 1 category or 5 or all of them.

Alternatively, you can PM me (http://xixax.com/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=21) your nominations.

You can also make a case for a particular nomination here if you so desire.

For movies released in 2019, consult this list (https://www.oscars.org/sites/oscars/files/92nd_oscars_reminder_list.pdf). Although we can make some exceptions. For example, I think we should push Portrait of a Lady on Fire to next year, since no one's seen it, and its wide release is mid-February.

Reminder for the "Most Disappointing Film" category — this is most disappointing, not worst. What was supposed to be good or great but just wasn't? What broke your heart?

Odds are we will especially need help with the smaller categories, so your nominations there will likely have a great impact.

I'm just going to use this forum to remind people that none of you reprobates have watched The Death of Dick Long yet, and all your votes are invalid as a result.

I've counted all the votes thusfar, and we're on our way to figuring out the nominations. But we could use some more help!

These categories have lots of single votes, but no consensus:

Best Debut Film
Best Documentary
Best Film Poster

We could use a lot more input for these categories:

Best One-Hour TV Show
Best Half-Hour TV Show
Best TV Performance
Best TV Episode

A few more suggestions for the debut film category:

Aniara (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7589524/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0)
Tigers are Not Afraid (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4823434/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1)
The Standoff at Sparrow Creek (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5304996/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0)

EDIT: Apparently I was mistaken, and Tigers are Not Afraid is not a debut film. Let's replace it with Luz (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm6849061/?ref_=tt_ov_dr) instead.

Yep, with theaters being no go for almost the whole year I'm cool with collapsing 2020-21 together next year. Future internet historians might get a hint about the gravity of the pandemic situation through the conspicuous gap between Xaxies.

I'd advocate for doing it this year rather than allow 24 months' worth of films to be neglected in favor of Soggy Bottom. True, it's not been a conventional year but there have been a lot of films released (though not in the cinemas) and there've been some real diamonds in the rough. Host (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNlKbqHqGcY&ab_channel=Shudder) and Lovers Rock (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVOhXowWqDU&ab_channel=AmazonPrimeVideo) were two of my personal faves. And I'm still waiting to be allowed to nominate Portrait of a Lady on Fire (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-fQPTwma9o&ab_channel=NEON) for everything.

Spirit noms for further inspiration. (https://www.filmindependent.org/blog/2021-film-independent-spirit-award-nominations-announced/)
