Director Gary Winick passed away this weekend because of a brain tumor. He was one of the nicest guys I've ever met in the office. It's a safe bet that many xixaxers aren't fans of the work that he's most known (read "paid") for, but he was really passionate about independent cinema and highly encouraging to young filmmakers. he was also really relaxed and just all around nice.

From an AP article:
Gary Winick, who rose to fame directing mainstream films like Letters to Juliet and 13 Going on 30, but is more well-known for his independent films, has died. He was 49."He was suffering from brain cancer for quite some time, and it ultimately metastasized throughout his body," his manager at Anonymous Content, Rosalie Swedlin, tells The Hollywood Reporter.

"What's remarkable is that after his first surgery, he was able to direct Letters to Juliet. It was a battle that we thought he had won, and ultimately they just didn't get it all," Swedlin added.

In 1999, Winick founded InDigEnt, which went on to produce nineteen indepedent films over the next 10 years, including Winick's Tadpole, which he sold to Miramax for $6 million at the 2002 Sundance film Festival.

Filmmaker Matt Dentler first announced the news on Twitter Sunday: Gary Winick died today. Too late to make the Oscars tribute, but way too early. He leaves behind a legacy of supporting indie film and NYC." Swedlin says a memorial service is still being planned, and people will be asked to donate to charity. The funeral will be private.

"He was very special to me," she adds. "He was a dear friend as well as a longtime client. Gary was an incredibly important figure in the indie movement. He will be missed."

Obviously what you are doing right now is called (in my upcoming book of psychology at least) validation. I think it's a normal thing to do. People will reply, say anything, and then you're gonna do what you were subconsciently thinking of doing all along.

Sad news indeed.

Agreed.  He was 49, way too young to go.

Matt35mm and I saw the trailer for Letters to Juliet this weekend before watching The Ghost Writer

Falling in love is the greatest joy in life. Followed closely by sneaking into a gated community late at night and firing a gun into the air.

Ravi

So sad.  I was going to see him this weekend in Dallas too.

Comedian Mike DeStefano dies
7 Mar, 2011  | by Dylan P. Gadino breaking news, stand-up

Mike DeStefano, well respected for his brutally honest approach to stand-up comedy, passed away last night after suffering a heart attack.

DeStefano, who gained some mainstream success last year due to his final five stature in the most recent season of Last Comic Standing, was set to perform his one-man show A Cherry Tree in The Bronx on Wednesday at the Barrow Street Theater in New York City. He had just finished a run of sold-out shows, as he performed a similar show under the title Drugs, Disease and Death: A Comedy at the Producer's Club Theater in New York.

The news of his death was confirmed to us by a friend of DeStefano's famiy. DeStefano's one-man show producer and longtime supporter Cringe Humor also Tweeted what seemed like a confirmation when their feed simply went live with the word "devastated."

DeStefano, who was HIV positive, had overcome severe drug addiction and the death of his wife; a lot of his material, especially his new show, centered around these things.

We interviewed Mike a few months ago in Los Angeles during his run on Last Comic Standing. You get a great sense of who Mike was. Check it out. Our thoughts are with Mike's family.

Former Alice In Chains bassist Mike Starr dies aged 44

Starr was found dead in a house in Salt Lake City, Utah yesterday afternoon March 8. He was found by police after someone had telephoned the force to notify them of the death.

The official cause of his death is unconfirmed so far.

According to TMZ.com, Starr's father has spoken of his son's death, calling it "a terrible shock and tragedy".

Starr had struggled with drug addiction throughout his life, even appearing on US reality show Celebrity Rehab last year to help combat his heroin addiction.

He left Alice In Chains in 1993 after contributing to their 1992 album 'Dirt', and took no part in their subsequent reunion. He was believed to be putting together a new band in Utah just before he died.
