Don't see a topic for this, so here we go.
Saw a commercial on SNL that seemed to start out like a PSA or something, and then it turned out it was for this movie, Mean Girls (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0377092/). Lacey Chabert is in it, all grown up after Party of Five. Tina Fey also has a role in it, and she co-wrote the script. (ATTN: SoNowThen.) According to IMDb.com, Tim Meadows, Ana Gasteyer, and Amy Poehler are also in it.
I was just taken by the commercial, because it seemed to have this tongue-in-cheek thing going for of it that not a lot of teen movies do. It started with Lacey talking about problems women face in the world, and they came back to home and how 7 out of 10 have a negative body image, and one of the girls butts in and says "So what? 6 out of 10 are right!" Reminded me a bit of Clueless, or maybe Jawbreaker, which was horrible. Maybe I'm thinking of Heathers, or something else. So yeah, there you go.
Trailer here. (http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/mean_girls/)
Yeah, Tina Fey wrote the screenplay; as far as I know, she wrote it herself, although it is based on a (nonfiction) book about the way teenage girls are cruel to each other. The "negative body image line" is actually from a sketch Tina did with Rachel Dratch back when they were in Second City together. Rachel played Denise (the same character she plays on SNL- the sullen Boston teenager), and Fey was her disapproving mother. It's a funny line, that commercial made me laugh more than anything on last night's disappointing SNL.

I'm going to assume you heard that on the Second City disc from the hardcover book. Which is what I own as well. :yabbse-thumbup:
I must see this movie.
I saw this trailer...ughh.
could be great commentary on girls and such...and i trust fey's writing...i do think, though, that the material was handled in a bit too stylish of a manner. but im judging from the trailer, so what do i know.
I enjoyed this quite a bit. I'm sometimes a sucker for high school movies, but I think I can objectively say this is well above most in intelligence, thanks to the lovely Ms. Fey. It's well written, slightly unpredictable, and even when it starts to get into diatribe territory -- well, at least those scenes are played by Fey and Tim Meadows, who are both so funny that all was forgiven.
It's pretty hysterical overall, actually, and the stuff involving Rachel McAdams family is pure gold.
It's not anything great or deep, obviously (I remember someone referencing it in the 'Thirteen' thread), but I think it should prove satisfactory for people who like their fluff with a bit of a bite to it.
Also, if anyone thinks the euphamism 'butter your muffin' seems oddly placed in the film, Tina Fey was on NPR and said that the MPAA made them loop that line because 'pop your cherry' was unacceptable for a PG-13 rating.
Yeah, and "made out with a hotdog" was originally supposed to be "masturbated with a hotdog". "Made out" doesn't really make sense.
But just picture that girl making out with a hot dog... that's funny.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go back to designing my Lindsay Lohan fan site.
i went yesterday with my little sister and i actually enjoyed it a lot. sure there were bad moments (anything with the stupid blonde girl that's not Rachel McAdams) but overall i thought Tina Fey wrote a great script. I also really liked seeing Tim Meadows again, he was great as he principal. I went into it because my sister wanted to see it really bad and i didnt, and then we came out and she didnt like it and i did. anywho, i give this movie a 4 out of 5.
i think the thing i laughed most at was the kid's business card: "Math Enthusiast/Bad-Ass"
'Mean Girls' Tops Box Office With $25M
Maybe nice guys finish last, but "Mean Girls" came in first at the weekend box office. The comedy starring Lindsay Lohan as a student who gets swept up in the backstabbing politics of fashion, love and popularity among high school cliques earned $25 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Although it starred 17-year-old Lohan, the presence of "Saturday Night Live" star Tina Fey, who also wrote the screenplay, appealed to grown-up moviegoers. Overall, "Mean Girls" got its strength from girl power.
About 75 percent of the audience was female and about half the audience was under 18, said Wayne Lewellen, head of distribution for Paramount, which released the movie.
"The teenage girl audience has a lot of clout and a lot of discretionary income from somewhere. They've got a lot of fun money and go to see movies in groups," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations.
We saw this today. It's pretty pedestrian as a movie, but it's funny enough. I liked it a lot more than I liked the dumb teenage girls sitting behind us, who were loudly aghast and confused at the many exaggerated/incongruous/satirical moments. :-( Lousy teens, ruining a teen movie for me. The best/funniest part for me were the observational/incisive humor, the stuff that worked satirically, and these girls were just loudly wondering what it all meant and giving their commentary on the characters' actions.
It's good to see Fey having a success with this one. A bonus for godardian: She's one of those girls who's down with the gays without over-depending upon/exploiting/patronizing us (like some girls who make some movies with titles like Connie and Carla), which I like. She's smart and funny, which is a cliche when mentioning her but which is really so unusual in this world that I think it bears repeating as a high compliment. I also Tivoed the Chris Rock special, which I'm projecting will also fit into that unique smart/funny category.
This was a pretty good movie overall. The actors are all good and the script has some good points to make and it's funny at the same time.
so is this a Teen Movie disguised as a Smart Satire? or a Smart Satire disguised as a Teen Movie?

Don't worry about what you think it could be "disguised" as. I saw it last night and its a very good movie. Everything Ghostboy said is true. So let's say it's a smart, satirical teen movie that's entertaining for everybody.
i liked it.
eward liked it.
Very funny movie. I haven't laughed out loud this much in a movie theatre experience in a while. Typical structure, yes, but too many moments of just some good fucking jokes that are too true for the genre. Best movie of its kind since 'Clueless', which is very underrated itself.

I agree, but I was reminded a bit more of "Election" while watching this. It seemed to have that kind of tone to it; more "serious" than a typical teen school comedy. I thought it was so "fetch" and hilarious and the best line was, "We only carry sizes 1, 3, and, 5. You could try Sears."
Also, the word 'canoodling' was said, and I immediately thought of Thrindle.

Hey! Give credit where it's due. Thrindle may have got the "Canoodling" ball going on this site but I was the one who showed her the wonder of the canoodle in the first place.

I thought I started the canoodling thing, because of that article I posted that used the word.
I thought I started 'canoodling' when I said WHO CARES ABOUT WHO STARTED THE WORD 'CANOODLING'!?!!?
Boy! That got a little more serious than it should have.
It's been so long since I've canoodled - I almost don't deserve canoodle recognition.

I really enjoyed this movie. It was a bit overlong and cliche at points, but overall an above average teen flick. Lindsey Lohan was great in this role, but I also have to mention Lacey Chabert (who I thought embodied the character very well) and Tim Meadows (hilarious...perfect comedic timing). What I really liked about this movie was *SPOILERS* how Cady started to become like one of the 'plastics'. It really showed how vulnerable high schoolers are to peer influences. I liked how Cady was flawed and not completely self-righteous and all-knowing from the get go. Funny lines and some really funny comparisons between the animal world and the high school world were entertaining and lightened the mood at points. I agree with MacGuffin...the best line was "We only carry sizes 1, 3, and, 5. You could try Sears." Really funny. These kind of biting lines kept me entertained.
Lohan Blasts Boob Job Reports
Freaky Friday and Mean Girls star Lindsay Lohan has branded Hollywood's new fixations with her breasts "perverted" after rumors emerged she had undergone cosmetic surgery. The redhead actress has been sporting a fuller cleavage of late, prompting speculation over whether she's gone under the knife and had a breast enhancement operation. But as the rumors circulate at a rapid pace, Lohan, who insists her curves are completely natural, wants to remind everybody of one important factor - she's just 17. She says, "Recently, I heard that I've gotten a boob job. I'm 17! It's kind of perverted, but if they're gonna write about anything to bring attention to my chest, why not!"

Yeah, it'd be worth it.
POSSIBLE SPOILERS
Saw this yesterday. It was pretty smart about the little cliques that exist in most high schools, though I thought it was strange that there were only 3 people at the Plastics' table. If they were so popular shouldn't there be a lot of hangers on and guys there also? Also, where were the jocks?
Though Cady knew the Plastics were shallow and vain, when she started getting more acceptance in the group she couldn't help but to be sucked into it. The all out battle in the school when the Burn Book pages were posted everywhere was hilarious. Something massive like that was necessary to cleanse that school of all the pettiness. That part is a fantasy, of course, but it was nice to see it. It was funny that Cady's dad didn't know that she wasn't allowed to go out when he grounded her.
"Let's hear you make some noise!"
<kids cheering>
"Okay, settle down now."

NL 'Wrongs' adds Waters as director
Director Mark Waters has signed up for "Henry's List of Wrongs" from New Line Cinema, while Harley Peyton has been tapped to rewrite it. "Wrongs" tells the tale of a shy boy who gets dumped at the prom, with the incident shaping his life as he grows up to be a ruthless corporate magnate. Years later, when he discovers the girl who dumped him was terminally ill and wanted to spare his feelings, he sets out to rectify his own malicious behavior toward others. John Scott Shepherd wrote the initial draft, based on his book. Scott Alexander, Larry Karaszewski and David O. Russell also worked on the screenplay. Producing are Warren Zide, Craig Perry, Ken Atchity and Chi-Li Wong. Richard Brener and Michele Weiss are overseeing for New Line. Waters, who directed the hits "Freaky Friday" and "Mean Girls," has numerous projects in the works. He's prepping "If Only It Were True" at DreamWorks, with Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo attached to star, and is developing "The Spiderwick Chronicles" at Nickelodeon Movies and "The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" at the Walt Disney Co. Peyton wrote the Barry Levinson-directed "Bandits" and was a writer-producer on TV's "Twin Peaks."

Everyone has a chance now:
Lindsay Lohan, Wilmer Valderrama Break Up
"Mean Girls" star Lindsay Lohan and her boyfriend, Wilmer Valderrama, have ended their relationship.
"They have broken up, but are still friends," Valderrama's publicist, Heidi Slan, told The Associated Press Friday. She declined to provide details.
Lohan and Valderrama acknowledged being a couple in July, after Lohan turned 18.
The couple's breakup was reported Friday by People and Us Weekly magazines.
Lohan's publicist, Leslie Sloane Zelnik, didn't immediately return a call seeking a comment from the AP. Us Weekly quoted Zelnik as saying, "I can confirm that they have amicably split, but the two remain close friends and supportive of each other's busy careers."
Valderrama stars on the Fox sitcom "That '70s Show."
Lohan, who also starred in "Freaky Friday," was hospitalized in Los Angeles in late October for a high fever and headaches. She became ill while filming the movie "Herbie: Fully Loaded."
And I was so sure they were going to spend the rest of their lives together.
I think this is the greatest thing I've read today...

haha i just noticed Lohan is trying to be a singer now. That is stupid.

hey, it was! honestely, i never would've watched this movie had it not been for the positive buzz around here as i'm a few years out of the high school thing and the genre isnt one that does much for me anymore. HOWEVER i agree this is probably the best movie of its kind since possibly clueless. (which i re-watched the other night as well for comparison, and was intersting to see a movie basically from the plastics pov). it was actually the first thing i've ever seen lindsay lohan in, after a year of her appearing in every magazine it was nice to finally see her act. i agree with fey and waters in the commentary when they say that she is most pretty during the beginning before she becomes a bitch. so, it was a good time. all the snl people were great especially tim meadows interuppting the speech.
I finally got around to seeing this. I was really excited after the first 15-25 minutes, i thought I might have another Election on my hands. It's unfortunate that the film kind of spun off and landed in familiar territory. i wouldn't have a problem with this except this change didn't feel right and the film wasn't nearly as funny as it had begun. Overall, I enjoyed it but it fizzled out for me towards the end pretty rapidly.
k-l-a
sadly, I was the only person laughing at this. maybe because I am pretenious and I think someone misspelling something is hilarious and because just about all my gym teachers I've ever had couldn't spell, or everyone in the theatre just didn't get it. I am hoping it was because it just wasn't funny and i am a bitch. amen.
I really had no interest in seeing this, but since my wife wanted to see it and I knew Tina Fey was involved and we had a free Blockbuster rental, I thought we would give it a shot.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this film. It was funny. I wasn't expecting for it to be as funny as it was, but it did keep me laughing through most of the movie. I could find things to complain about, but overall this was an enjoyable and clever little film. And, although the ending could be said to be a little conventional, I felt it worked for this film. I really didn't need for this movie to end up in Election territory. It worked great for Payne's film but would've felt really out of place in this one, I think.
it's pretty hilarious. and hot.
will watch this many times in the future.
some memorable lines--
"Irregardless, ex-boyfriends are just off limits to friends. I mean that's just like the rules of feminism."
"Mr. Duvall: Her name is Cady. Cady Heron. Where are you, Cady?
Cady: That's me. It's pronounced like Katie.
Mr. Duvall: My apologies. I have a nephew named Anfernee, and I know how mad he gets when I call him Anthony. Almost as mad as I get when I think about the fact that my sister named him Anfernee."
and a personal favorite-- "Gretchen I'm sorry when I told people about the time when you got diarrhea in Barnes & Noble, and I'm sorry for telling everyone now."
