Question: Favourite PTA movie
I'm absolutely sure that this must have already been brought up on the old message board I keep hearing about (sorry I missed out on that), and maybe everyone's choices are already known, but just to clarify (and for new members)...
Okay I've obviously fucked up somehow...! Why can't I add Punch-Drunk...? Hmm...
where's PDL?
and I can't really choose a favorite. They're all completely different and therefore I love them for different reasons. I wanted to say Magnolia, but then I'm like, but Boogie Nights makes me so happy, and Hard Eight has such great dialogue, and PDL is just so pretty. See what I mean?
you have to add an extra blank little section box thing...i dont know why...
anyway i still say Magnolia.
Okay: I'm crap and now cannot seem to even edit the damn thing...! Maybe this was a bad idea - perhaps one isn't meant to choose. But, for what it's worth: Magnolia - it was the first of his I saw, and probably my favourite film of all time, so - you know...
PDL.

Added for you.
"Boogie Nights" for me. I love the rest too, but BN has a "Do you remember where you were when...?"-nostalgia feel for me because it was my introduction to PTA and it just blew me away.
Magnolia. For me it works on so many levels and in so many ways. It can truly grab you and shake you up emotionally unlike all of the others [which are all brilliant pieces of work]. It can really leave you shell shocked.
Boogie Nights is just too cool. I love Magnolia and PDL but BN is un-fuck-with-able
Magnolia, for the complexity & emotional intensity.
Then PDL, because it changed my life ( plus it has a puppy dog..!! )
i think magnolia is his best film, but my favorite is boogie nights.

Curious as to how so? Not hatin', but rather just curious....
I haven't seen Boogie Nights or Hard Eight.
I am looking for Boogie Nights on DVD to buy. I loved PDL and Magnolia so I see no reason to rent Boogie Nights only to buy it later...why waste the $4?
A brief history of my PTA experiences: Boogie Nights was one of those movies that I was never allowed to watch but snuck the copy of it my parents had rented. I remember thinking the "giant cock" line was hilarious, but didn't really get into the movie a few years later. Magnolia I initially hated when I rented it. Went to a film program, bought the Boogie Nights DVD and watched it a lot. Rented Magnolia again and started to actually like it. It was on TV and I had to watch it and then grew to love it, so much so that I started watching it all the time and had to go to the NY premiere of PDL (saw PTA in person...badass). Joined the boards. Saw PDL 3 times before (finally) watching Hard Eight which, big surprise, I also really love. All the movies just do it for me.
Easy.. Magnolia. Although Boogie Nights is getting closer and closer.
flagpole special was pretty bitchin
Magnolia. A perfect beautiful film, and probably my all time favorite. Boogie Nights is great...but it I didn't think so originally. It grew on me though. Each one of PTA's movies are just so great though....Hard Eight is perfect because of PBH's performance...BN is great for it's style and dialogue...Magnolia has amazing emotional impact, and some of the greatest shots I've ever seen...PDL is just awesome, but I'm not exactly sure why yet...I'm thinking because of Sandler's performance...
But my vote is for Magnolia...in fact, I think I'm gonna go watch it right now.

PDL changed my life simply because it was the first PTA movie I saw.
I didn't really understand it...it was not at all what I expected, but I was so intrigued, and felt so good leaving the theatre...not knowing why..and had to find out why. My daughter suggested I try the PTA website.
Wow, this is so much fun. I learned a few things that helped me understand what the movie meant. Went to see it again ( my 1st time ever wanting to see the same movie twice ) Everyone on the message board was so excited about PTA and all his movies. So now I own all the DVDs and soundtracks available and can't wait for more. My wifes favorite is Hard Eight.
Thank you Tina.
It's currently Magnolia at the moment, cause I could relate to it in so many ways, but PDL is coming a close second. However, BN is cool and funny and Hard Eight was superb... Damn, this is confusing - they're all excellent in their own way.
Nope, it really doesn't feel right to rank them!
i wouldn't want to say what anderson's "best" film is, but my favourite is definately boogie nights, just because it's flat-out fun. plus, i have an attraction towards epic period-pieces with a bursting soundtrack of the era, like goodfellas.
My favorite is Magnolia. After I watch it, my mother's kind words come to mind: you're never going to be able to make a movie that good...
Except when my mom says it she's usually referring to Mrs. Doubtfire...
thanks, Mom.
I think Boogie Nights for me. It was more entertaining then Magnolia, which was also a great film, but I still say Boogie Nights.
Quoteflagpole special was pretty bitchin
Where/How did you see it?
not only did i see it at retinevitable but the creates denied me a copy of it, deeming it unworthy of my prying eyes (we discussed it over brunch and he politely denied)
My favorite would be Magnolia. I remember going to see at the theater, not knowing what was in stores for me. I was blown away. Plus it has excellent music by Aimme Mann and Supertramp.
I wanna insist that it is only my fav, that doesn'T mean the best because they're equally good for very different reasons.
My favs in order:
1. Punch-Drunk Love
2. Boogie Nights
3. Magnolia
4. Hard Eight
my fav is PDL after seeing it for the 5th time. i think its his best film with no extra fluff. i like magnolia a lot too, but it and b.n. are maybe a bit long. everything in pdl is geniously cinematic. there are so many moments......heck think of the brothers beat down for one(just one):
he gets punched out, we see the utah license plate sideways,
he runs and the light is so that we see his black shadow across a white wall ahead of him, then he runs into an alleyway, where we get an above head shot that makes him look like a rat in a cage, then he runs out and we get scared seeing the light on his back knowing something is coming.....and then utter frustration when "they know where he lives" anyway.....no way to get away.......this is just one sequence of scenes.......the entire film is that way
the other films are great too and i think he gets better a little bit each time
my favorite would be magnolia...when i first saw it i fell in love with his work all over again, and again with PDL, so damn i can't decide what is my favorite.
PTA is so talented and dreamy, oh, paul...
i say magnolia is my favorite today, but tomorrow who knows...they all are just so good, i have to share the love, so i don't make any of his films jealous...
1. Punch-Drunk Love
2. Magnolia
3. Hard Eight
4. Boogie Nights
I didn't think PTA could top Magnolia but PDL is the best IMO.
With BOOGIE being at number 4, by no means i'm i saying it's a bad film or his worst - i love Boogie, it's epic, it's awesome - its probally PTA's most entertaining film of the 4 IMO. However, i saw Hard Eight when it first came out and was blown away by it - the movie itself obviously- but also the fact it was this guy's first film and it's a masterpeice IMO for a first film.

any of you brits on here catch Magnolia on BBC last night? well i did. I don't have any dvds here, and these kids in the dorms here have shite movies (knotting hill and 10 Things I hate about You are the favorites here) So when I found out that Magnolia was on at 9:15 I nearly creamed my pants. One of the british chicks wuz out of town and let me use the tv in her room, I got to watch it all by myself thank god. It was good, despite the pan and scan (gross). Got drunk. Watching it made me want to come home. :(

Yeah!!
Quote from: cbrad4dbritish chicks are hornier than southern girls.
let me clarify:
hornier- maybe, maybe not- they do talk a lot more openly about sex.
better looking?- nah. can't beat girls from the south.
Yeah! They are certainly not good-looking. I think most european girls talk openly about sex or at least the north-european do. :) Ok....this is a weird discussion
in the US, sex only exists in the movies.
Quote from: Phil Marlowein the US, sex only exists in the movies.
Oh, too bad. But I have to say, the US-movie-sex is very lively captured :-D It almost looks like the real deal! But then again that dick of Dirk's didn't look real. 8)
british chicks are softer tho.

Couldn't agree more. They have sexier accents too.
These female accents do it for me
1. Australian
2. Southern
3. Brittish
and ooh... spanish.
Quote from: cbrad4dbritish chicks are hornier than southern girls.
 that's because british chicks are uglier than southern girls. :!:
scottish sheeps with scottish accents make my days
Where's polkablues?
What about French girls???
MAGNOLIA without a doubt, then followed by PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE
Quote from: mogwaiQuote from: Sigur RósWhat about French girls???
Oh la la.
But seriously what about them.....Ever done one?
Quote from: Sigur Rós.....Ever done one?
Ohhh, the French girl.
Soooo good.
Great accent.
Great.....
Out of my league.
Stole my heart.
Used me.
Very nice.
Gave heart back.
Broken. :(
Now must stick to Scottish sheep
Magnolia touched my feelings quite deep, and still can't believe it, a master piece (specially the making of dvd).
1) Magnolia - no words to fucking describe it. no words will do it justice.
2) Punch-Drunk Love - achieved just as much as BN and Magnolia yet wasnt nearly as big or ambitious (at least not in the sense that those films were)
3) Boogie Nights - BRILLIANT BRILLIANT FUCKING BRILLIANT
^(it pained me to do so but i had to)
4) Sydney - slow, somber and rather impressive debut from a brilliant filmmaker. very good, but definitly the least of the four films.
Quote from: mogwaiHard Eight: Winter
Boogie Nights: Summer
Magnolia: Fall
Punch-Drunk Love: Spring
Hey,
That's really......
now what is that word?.....
You know, the one that means "not stupid"?
Anyway, I like that..!!
I voted MAGNOLIA, although I haven't seen HARD EIGHT or PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE yet so its not exactly a fair vote.
Its a hard choice between BOOGIE NIGHTS and MAGNOLIA, but I just connect so emotionally with MAGNOLIA. I swear I cry every time Earl Partrige gives his death bed speech.
"The goddamn regrets!"
Hard Eight! *as he runs out into a barrage of machine-gun fire*
All of his films are fantastic, but I just like the relationship between Sydney and John; maybe it appealed to me for more personal reasons then I'd care to share in public; Boogie Nights and Magnolia I like equally (just as I have a hard time deciding whether to rewatch a Scorsese or Altman flick, I have a tough time deciding whether to watch BN or Magnolia); and Punch Drunk Love is just hysterical.
I like the apartment corridor scene, the proxemics made me feel strange and panicky.
I appreciated the realism and the "magic time" of the silent sunrise.
Boogie Nights!
No matter how many times I watch it, I just don't get tired of it. That is a rare quality.
Couch....duh!!!!
Haha, I got a kick out of re-reading this resurrection...good find Cine!
i think pdl might be my new fav
my story of PT movies is pretty standard, i loved boogie nights when i first saw it in 6th grade, but needless to say it was a little too much for a 12 year old, the end kinda disturbed me. Later in my life, i rented magnolia on DVD, like everyone, i was initially hooked from its amazing first 10 or 15 minutes. but i think like a lot of people i hated it at first, but was mysteriously drawn towards seeing it again. when it was on cable a few months later, i turned to it, and couldnt stop watching it. i found myself crying in one of my favorite scens of all time, when T.J. Mackey finally confronts his father. i found myself falling in love with each and every character, and appreciating its unique symbolism. Magnolia is now not only my favorite PT film, but it is my favorite film of all time. There's something special about a filmmaker like PT. Those who are equally as talented at writing as they are at directing are few and far between. I always get the feeling when watching a PT film that i am seeing the exact materialization of a man with a vision. Forgive me for saying this, but even though i love all the Kurosawas, Scorses, and Coppolas, I dont think they are quite as talented as PT.

Welcome to Xixax...
You know that PTA is heavily influenced by Martin Scorsese right...you are almost contradicting yourself...but yeah PTA's great.
i know that PT is heavily influenced by Scorsese, so is almost everyone that has come after him. I also know that PT is not the most original director or writer ever (although in recent years he might be) what i'm trying to say is that even though PT owes a lot to his predecessors, it is in my humble opinion that he is more naturally talented in the art of movie making than almost anyone out there.
how do you vote on this thing?
