Direction of Battle Royale sequel passes from father to son

Kinji Fukasaku, whose controversial dystopian thriller Battle Royale was one of the big local [Tokyo] hits of 2001, has turned over direction of the sequel to his son Kenta, after a setback in his battle with bone cancer.

Fukasaku, 72, began principal photography of Battle Royale 2 in Tokyo on December 16, but soon after complained of severe pain and had to be hospitalised on December 21. He then fell ill with pneumonia and his plans to return to the set after the New Year's holiday were put on hold.

A producer and scriptwriter on both Battle Royale and the sequel, Kenta was his father's first choice as a replacement. Fukasaku, however, still hopes to return to the film, which he has announced as his last, by the end of February.

Once best known abroad for the cult classic Black Lizard and the Battles Without Honor and Humanity series of gangster films, Fukasaku was a leading commercial force inJapanese cinema for more than two decades. His career was faltering, however, when he made Battle Royale, a film about 42 junior high school students forced to play a murder game by a repressive government in a near-future Japan.

Though denounced in Parliament and elsewhere for its excessive violence, the film was a huge hit with its teenage target audience, grossing $26 million. The sequel is scheduled for a summer release by Toei.

Oh, I thought you were talking about Casino Royale... couldn't figure out how it was a "dystopian thriller" ...

you can rent Battle Royale at Video Vault in Alexandria, Va, just outside of Washington DC. I go there a lot, i just got a job there. 45,000 different titles. Largest selection below the Mason-Dixon Line i think.

Welcome back, Negro. Did you dump the projectionist gig?

There's a teaser for the sequel now...I found the link at AICN. Just do a search on Battle Royale 2.

The last shot is a real killer. This one definitely won't get distributed in America.

You can buy the VCD and other region DVD on many online sites.

Check out Pokerindustries.com.

They should have a battle royale vcd, and many many other great movies that you should check out. Hope this helps out. Battle Royale is awesome, you must see it and the vcd is real cheap, like 12 bucks and it's good quality.

Has anyone heard any more information about BR2? Has it been released in Japan? Anyone seen it?

There was a review up, again on AICN. It got slammed pretty hard, and the spoilers in the review gave a pretty clear indication as to why. Too bad. I really love the first one.

Duck Sauce

Battle Royal seems like such a popular movie, so why isnt it available on DVD in the US?

Just got through seeing this. Very, very cool. Already got the DVD off ebay for $13. I was glad to see the usually Japanese surrealness was absent from this one. However I'm rather surprised this was a 2001 release. It had the look and feel of something from the early to mid 90's.

Hopefully BR2 can follow the same formula and not screw it up too badly. My script would have Nanahara and Nori reinserted into the next BR a la Kawada after they were apprehended.

*SPOILERS*

The movie did through me though due to you seeing the girl win. I thought it was the prologue we were seeing and was convinced Misuko (the sickle girl) was going to win it due to her and the winner's resemblance.
