I'll start with an obvious one: Edwin Starr's "War"...
War. Huh. Good God, y'all...
Marvin Gaye
"What's goin on"
"For What It's Worth" - Buffalo Springfield
Revolution by the Beatles :(
Who'll Stop The Rain - CCR
Wooden Ships - CSN
Bob Dylan - Hard rains gonna fall
.....I think that's what it's called :-D
"bring the boys back home," "vera," "the day the tigers broke free" (on the film pink floyd: the wall), and the entire album "the final cut" by pink floyd.

in a weird ironic twist edwin starr the guy who sang this song died right after the war in iraq started creepy
While that's sad, it's not really worthy of the title "Ironic"

Not like rain on your wedding day, or a black fly in your chardonnay.
That's ironic. Don't you think?
Sorry. I'm done now.
Right, as I'm sure you're aware, almost nothing in that song is actually ironic (Poor Allanis, You Oughta Know what Irony is)...
I get tired of the misuse of that word sometimes, but under my skin lately is that Car commercial with the Celine Dion song where she says "Don't you find it IRONICAL"... don't fucking say that... while the dictionary has accepted it as an actual word, it's only because people refuse to stop saying it...

Thank god, someone else is as bugged by that as I am. Same thing with the Incubus song "Drive", where he says "waver" (or "waiver") where he means "waive".
And now... back to the topic.
Wait, one more post on that ironic business
Is the fact that almost nothing is ironic in the song "Ironic" ironic in itself? Maybe that was her intention
its ironic in that he may of had a chance to have a comeback amongst phoney rich college kids who are yellin " down with war"
he could of been the new thom yourke :: removes tounge from cheek::
"Gimme Shelter" by the Rolling Stones :(
Springsteen's Born in the USA and CCR's Fortunate Son. Bob Dylan also did a good one called Masters of War, which Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready covered.

they dont have any pink floyd. "the final cut" is an entire anti-war album
"Love Vigilantes" - New Order
"Levi Stubb's Tears" - Billy Bragg
...not bombastic or obvious, but more effective for that in bringing the anti-war message home. Those two are the ones that come to my mind first.

Well I think it's pretty much stuff that came out in the last few months. Some of it's pretty good, some of it's pretty bad, but it's all interesting. The best recent [obvious] anti-war song I've heard is REM's "The Final Straw" (http://www.remhq.com/finalStraw/finalstraw.html)... (and even that is just good, not particularily great)...
Although I still think much of Hail to the Thief is anti-war... in a perfect Radiohead kind of way...

Masters of War
by Bob Dylan
Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks
You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly
Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain
You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud
You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins
How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do
Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul
And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead
"Eve of Destruction" by Barry McGuire
BOOM!- System of a Down........fucking rocks your socks off baby 8)
And straying off the topic for just a sec....the best anti-consumerism, anti-materialism song (not that there are many lol): Chic 'N Stu-System again :P
It was more than mentioned, but Masters of War is the fuckin best anti war song ever made. Listen to it now. Seriously.
"Off Duty Trip" - The Raincoats
"One" - Metallica
"Disposable Heroes" - Metallica
OK, OK, neither of those holds a candle to the best Dylan protest songs.
But they are metal.
"I Love a Man in Uniform" - Gang of Four (and lots of their other songs, too- that's just my favorite).

Swiss Movement -- Compared to What
"Step Aside" and "Combat Rock" - Sleater-Kinney
Two very current anti-war songs, as it turned out (they were on One Beat, released late last year).
Fortunate Son - (I forget...)
What's Going On - Marvin Gaye
Boom! - SOAD
War - SOAD
P.L.U.C.K. - SOAD
