Fabrice du Welz's Quand on est amoureux, c'est merveilleux (1999), no subs. Shot by Benoît Debie.

Surprisingly enough, this completely unheralded horror short from the director of THE ORDEAL (2004; included on the Tartan DVD) proved more rewarding for me. Maybe it is because the plot in itself is so preposterous as to be effortlessly (and darkly) amusing. Here we have an unattractive, socially-deficient woman who, as a birthday present for herself, hires a strapping male stripper to perform at a non-existent party held in her dingy apartment.

The guy is foolish enough to sit down and much on some cake but, thanks to a fork in the throat, inadvertently finds himself as the girl's bedside companion. Even as her 'boyfriend' rots away under the sheets, she posts adverts in the newspaper calling for an adventurous couple to join them in a foursome! But, after some initial titillation, the unlikely correspondents – a short man sporting a moustache and a long-legged blonde – are soon disgusted by what they find there and split the scene.

But, wait – it gets stranger: the hideously deformed and cerebrally-impaired butcher boy gets very distracted every time the lead character comes into the shop (which is quite often) and, after the latest admonishment from his unsympathetic boss, he summons up enough courage to call at the woman's apartment and declare himself to her...
