Title: Kiyoshi Kurosawa
Post by: putneyswipe on February 03, 2021, 05:51:07 PM
He's not unknown, many here know his films but I'm starting this thread based on shoutbox chat in order to promote his work. He's one of the greatest directors working. He uses space, montage and silence in a unique way that I think is unequalled in the "suspense" genre if that's a thing, but I don't think he can be confined to genre.

Some of the classics which are must-views:

Cure (1997): Beautifully executed murder mystery/personal deconstruction/city symphony

Pulse (2001): sometimes put in the J-horror category but it's more of a metaphysical thing

Tokyo Sonata (2008) : he can do family drama too, and severely outclass something like Squid and the Whale

A new one which I haven't seen but have heard is a good departure from his style:

Yeah, I don't trust that info, but it could be a slow-speed 35mm perhaps. Looks like Super 16mm and it's a mystery I will research more once my hiragana moves into katakana.
