Friends, film snobs, countrymen, lend me your eyes...
As many of you are aware, a year and a half ago I relinquished control of Xixax to the hands of your faithful board admins and opened up a donation system. I used my company's resources to "float" Xixax at a rate that we typically extend only to low-usage web sites.
3 months ago, my company launched a new initiative to focus more efforts toward our hosting services, and since doing so our hosting has become quite a lucrative source of income for Mad Dancer. Because of this shift, it has caused me to take a look at the usage of our resources, and to become more diligent in policing the "buddy" deals we're offering friends and family.
It occurred to me over Thanksgiving that I hadn't personally been over to Xixax in over a month, and when I dropped by, I noticed that funding for the site (even at our lowest rate) had fallen behind and nobody from the board seemed to care.
In the past when this has happened, about 80% of the time, your admin crew has shelled out the funds to keep Xixax alive. A hand full of exceptions exist (you know who you are - and thank you!), but for the most part, Xixax has been kept alive by the admins here.
The time has come for me to make some decisions about the board and its future. In a nutshell, I personally have lost the passion that caused me to start Xixax to begin with. No longer with time for film, I've lost interest in the art - for at least the time being. Since I'm no longer emotionally attached to the subject matter here, and because Xixax has never been a valid source of income for my firm, I decided to close the doors effective December 31st.
Just as I was announcing my decision to the administrators, it occurred to me that their passion for Xixax that has kept the site afloat for the past 18 months could easily fuel its future if the site were hosted at a "bargain basement" hosting company - one that's not a premium service like the one my company offers. We all have seen ads for $9.95 per month web hosting. That's not what MDM does. We cater to small and mid-sized businesses who live and die by their web sites, and the attention we pay to each customer comes with a price tag. It's like having a Lexus instead of a Ford Escort... We strive to be the Lexus of the web hosting world. The "quantity over quality" web hosting companies that can afford to offer web space for peanuts will be just fine for a site like Xixax - a site that doesn't generate revenue for its owners.
Since Xixax could stand on its own on an el-cheapo hosting platform, I decided to bounce an idea off of the Admins here - which after a little bit of discussion they have chosen to accept.
I am selling Xixax to the board's administrative team.
We deal with web sites similar to Xixax on a daily basis at Mad Dancer Media, and we see price tags from $20,000 to upwards of $50,000 per purchase for sites just like this one. Yes, businesses DO pay that for web communities like this one. Your traffic is what they want, and they are willing to pay for it. But, I'm not in the business of selling virtual real estate, and I don't have anyone banging my door down to buy the place (I did have an offer last year from someone who balked at my price, but they were only a hobbyist and not a web firm).
So, anyway, I placed a price tag on Xixax and offered it to the admins here - at 4% of what it's probably really worth.
They're buying, I'm selling, and Xixax will be moving to a new web hosting service by January 1, 2007.
I will let the admins elaborate on what this means for the future of the board. I am sure there are already some great ideas in the works. But before they do, let me encourage you that if you enjoy this board, you should think about doing your part to pitch in to keep it running. The admins are going to front the money for the sale, and they'll be turning to you for reimbursement of the purchase price, so if you love Xixax like they do, think about hitting them with a little Christmas cash!
I had a lot of fun here in the early days. Here's to your fun in the future!
Sincerely,
- Michael Wilson
Hi Mike,
Good to hear from you after so long. I understand perfectly your decision, and I'm glad you guys were able to figure everything out already to keep Xixax running. I hope you get your passion for film back soon (it will happen for sure) and you visit us here more often. You've created this place, which became very important for a lot of people, and I'm one of the users that appreciates that a lot.
To the admins, I think I said this before but I have several servers and I have crew (designers, programmers, etc) that work for me full time, so if I can help in any way please let me kow.
Thanks again for everything. I'm sure the admins will continue to do a great job (except Pubrick :whip:).

Thanks for your support of this community for all these years, Michael. The internet would not be the same without Xixax.
Admins, where can we make donations in the mean time? I'm just a lowly unemployed graduate, so it wont be much but I feel its my duty....and it's Christmas.
Dear Bride of the Atom of the Internet,
I'll help pay for you because you're worth it, thanks for being worthy.
I guess I know where my Christmas bonus is going.
You see, Xixax, I love you more than Criterion.

We're in the process of setting up where to send that money. But any money would be EXTREMELY helpful and greatly appreciated. So in the mean time, put in a sock somewhere away from sight so it's not spent until we can set up an account somewhere.
The admins aren't planning any changes to the site. It'll still be the same xixax we've all come to know and love. As of now it's just a matter of deciding on a new server. Think of it this way: If xixax were a circus, we are the clowns looking for a new parking lot to set up tent. If xixax were a moblie home, we are the trash looking for a new trailer park. You get the idea.
PS: We're also looking into seeing if we can get a chat room back (all for you crono :yabbse-grin:).

Whoa... the concept of Xixax not existing really bothers me. I realise that I don't hang around much anymore... but it's sort of a staple. Thanks admins, I don't like the idea of being without my friendly neighbourhood xixax. Cheers to you guys. Fuckin rights. :P

FRIENDS, XIXAXERS, COUNTRYMEN! Lend Us Your Ears... And Wallets!
The time has come to call on all of you, our fellow members, to ask for your help in helping us Keep Xixax Alive. And your donations are needed to do so. So, please, help us out if you can, and contribute whatever you can, if you can. No donation is too small, nor too big for that matter. :yabbse-wink: Contrary to the saying, Size Doesn't Matter. So Give; Give until it hurts. And when you realize that there is a fine line between pleasure and pain, give some more. Yes, we know the holidays are just around the corner, but does your dad really need that new tie? Or mom that bottle of vodka and pack of cigs? Instead send them a letter saying: A Donation Was Made In Your Name To The Xixax Relief Fund. They'll be happy knowing that you're not spending your time looking at pictures of Tubgirl, but instead on a film website that is a better way to ruin your brain with people of the same interests from all over the globe.
I know I speak for all the admins when I say, we greatly appreciate whatever you contribute. We, like you, don't want this site to go away. We love being here and sharing ideas, opinions and thoughts with people we would consider friends. We all know this site is like that nicotine fix you just can't, and don't wanna, shake.
And remember, every time you donate a kitten is born, and every time you don't a puppy is killed, so, please, do it for the kitties and the puppies.
I just gave birth to a big, fat kitten, so everybody else better get their asses in gear now and do their part.
Are we really still at 0 8% of the total?
Come on people...

Some questions when we move to a warmer climate:
1. Will the new location also need donations from time to time?
2. I assume you (admins) will move (or whatever is that you need to do) the entire site without missing its history of posts, right?
1. yes, but far less.
2. everything will be exactly the same.

You can still chip in.
While we did raise enough to cover the costs to own the site free and clear, we still need contributions to pay for new server costs. But these costs are not near the amount previously needed to buy the site and not as time-sensitive either. In fact, only $10 will pay for a month. So if you feel like still contributing, the link at the top of the site will direct you on how to do so. If not, no harm done. Just think of it like how we asked for donations in the past.
And, yes, we are still looking into setting up a chat room. We haven't forgotten, crono.
This new format is really great, whoever worked on it. It somehow made the last iteration easier to use, and even more appealing to look at overall, without a drastic alteration.

Thanks to Mike and his crack knowledge on all things computery and technical mechinations and junk, he was able to add the chat room back for us. So a BIG thanks to him for helping us out on that.
In other news, do you have a burning desire to write an essay on Ratner vs. Singer over the X-Men movies? Or maybe just a puff piece on which race movie is funnier Talladega Nights or Days Of Thunder? Well, my friend, you're in luck. As you might have noticed, we've reopened The Green Screen. Our own The Gold Trumpet has been made a moderator for that forum. It's open to anyone for submissions. So if you have written something you want to share with the class and want to have your words dragged through the mud about the grave inaccuracies, or have people praise you as the next Pauline Kael, then send your work to GT as he will make it nice and presentable and give you any feedback if necessary. Any questions you may have might already have been addressed in that forum in the top sticky thread. We're not looking for rants, and the writings don't have to be of thesis magnitude. Just a clear, consise analysis of your subject is satisfactory. Look through the other threads for examples.

I'd be pissed if you had an avatar of the hunky Oliver Platt wearing very little too due to the fact that I can't read your posts while I'm at work.
Stop objectifying women and get an avatar of a beautiful woman who is clothed and classy.
Also, only assholes and meatheads criticize someones sexuality when they get criticized or feel threatened or embarassed.
In all seriousness, it's not just cause I find you simple and easily entertained. I really do think this board is above avatars of scantily clad women, and it does make it difficult for me and probably alot of other people to post from work. Just saying.
All Maxin type avatars should be banned. It's like having bratwurst and a budweiser at an upscale french restaurant.

XIXAX IS GETTING BILLED AGAIN
donate what you can asap!
Just to expand:
xixax is lookin' to holla fo a dolla.
We're not looking to raise the high amount we had to last year. We're only asking for enough kash to cover the next year of server costs. If you can spare $10 or $5, fine. $0, no problem; you don't have to give to remain a member. $100, we'll see if we can set you up with a walk-on part in the next Ratner flick.
Any amount is much appreciated. So put your mouth where the money is.
Thank you.
merry xmas, xixax

Merry xmas from me too!!
Next paycheck, you got it.
A little off topic, but it's something I have to get off my chest.
With the increasing praise and interest CMBB is generating, I am getting nervous about the future of this forum. I don't think it's a mystery that PDL essentially destroyed the old forum on C&C. It became overrun with members who contributed nothing but pure annoyance and grief for the admins. It just became too burdensome and eventually caused the roof to cave in.
My only request is this: keep an eye on new members. If the admins feel the new member is out of line, they should ban them without hesitation. If the admins feel they should confer with each other before action is taken, so be it. I just hope that the decision is made quickly. I know admins have a lot of responsibility, but I feel that this task will be extremely important over the next couple of months.
If donations are needed to help support this sole activity, then I can contribute.

a lot of donations will be needed to support this activity, you're right. i'll PM you my address and can shoot off a money order to me... i'll make sure Mac gets it.
I'd probably just send it to Mac directly. So he can make sure Cine gets it.
And don't you have to be admin approved before you can post? You should make new members write an essay on why they think they should be allowed to be a part of this community. If they say something like "Because you let Stefen in" then that probably means they shouldn't be allowed to participate.
Is this the start of Xixax becoming invite only?
at the very least, Mac and I will make sure stefen gets it.
XIXAX isn't a PTA board, so I don't think it will attract large numbers of curious interneters like PDL apparently did for the old board.
Thanks to Pwaybloe and everyone for their concern, but no worries about unruly members. While we don't do an extensive background check, we do try to weed out anyone here just to pimp their wares and not be an active participant. But we can never know if a member we activate will turn out to be a ruffian, and, to be honest, I can't even remember the last time we had a problem member, so I think the admin staff has done tip-top.
I can understand where this is coming from, with the release of TWBB, a concern that a whole flood of new recuits will be coming in to make this a mini-imdb. The thing is, cig&rv doesn't even link us on their site anymore. So, we only really have to worry about wayward Googlers who would like to know more about buttmash.
Update on the donation front: We received half our goal so far. Thanks to all those who have contributed. If you would still like to slip some money into xixax's g-string, you're still able to. And if you just want to be a wallflower and enjoy the peep show and not let your significant other know what you do in your off hours, we welcome voyeurs too.
In the next few weeks I'll make a decent donation. I haven't because I've been very poor everytime it came to collection, but I'm on way out of the board. I need to give something back before I leave. My posting has diminished and its always harder to find good topics and I don't see any positives for me here in the future. I value some members for their insight and want them to know they kept me on the board for the last few years, but it's become filled with too much bullshit. I doubt my departure will be much of a loss considering the make up of the board as is now.
Haha, I understand I've tried to leave the board before. There is even a banner in honor of it, but it's real this time.
don't overreact.
my reply was a joke (refer to the SMILEY at the end of it) and any hostility in it was aimed at family guy. as you know i've been generally a supporter of yours for a while now. the references in that thread were not in-jokey at all... (eg. maya kash = dude with a dog humping his leg.. anyone can get that. pas rapport = frenchman painting the computer monitor.. BRILLIANT). it was genius that a running gag was created out of nowhere in a topic that deserved much less.. it's like when grafiti artists make something beautiful out of an otherwise forgettable empty wall. but humour is not your strongpoint, and i made light of that. it's the same reason i don't comment on any sports topic -- i know nothing about it.
i suppose the other event that might hav pushed you over the edge is hedwig's completely HARMLESS vent in the awards thread. i think you took his ludicrous post too seriously and started a debate about "backing up your opinions" when all the dude said was "FUCK THEM!"... no back up needed, your objection seemed out of place.
the fact you thought gamblour was 17 based on reading his reviews shows you're just out of touch. if anything, gamblour has recently undergone a massive transformation -- maybe he took a few writing classes or something -- cos his reviews have become about as original and polarizing as your own.
if you wanna leave then don't blame the board cos i don't think your finger has ever been exactly on the pulse about what goes on around here. you'll be missed.
If anyone else wants to leave money on the table on their way out, we're not gonna stop you. But you know we've showed you a good time, and you'll be back for more. We give good film.

I think you hit the nail on the head there. My reviews are polarizing and not only for the positions I take, but for the way I go about them. It's never been happy agreeance with me and everyone, but things have changed. Before I'd get more people who would argue with what I said. My last arguments over the past few months have been about how I say things. I am ten times more likely going to have to defend my method of reviewing instead of what I say. That makes for arguments that go into personal matters and it's annoying. I feel I have learned a lot and this board has helped to develop my opinion but when I write arguments it tends to get looked over.
My leaving has absolutely NOTHING to do with recent events. It's been a long time coming. In hindsight, I should have clarified that. I look back to recent arguments and realize they were probably situations I should have better avvoided, but I've always been a dufus in that area and I'll admit my wrongs. I wish I knew a lot of you better so the banter wasn't a jungle gym for me with guessing motive and context.
I'm also not leaving right away. I have a Magnolia piece to publish and a small film called There Will be Blood to watch and review. I guess the point is my leaving has everything to do with what is said in the first paragraph. I don't want to be the guy who personally prides himself for sounding the most professional. I hate the idea of resting on an established voice on the board and making it my ticket to legitimacy. I want long arguments and challenging discussions that make me re-think my positions. I want to be able to grow from that. I know a lot of people that have come long ways to turn into great reviewers but they seem fewer in numbers these days.
I just feel like I hit a plateau and my arguments from now on will be petty and personal. The worst parts about me will be brought out. It's not a good thing to taste in your mouth.
GT, I just wanna say that if and when you do leave, you will be very missed. Part of the joy of Xixax has always been reading other people's opinions of films that are vastly different from my own. That's part of what makes this such a great community, at least in my opinion: pretty much everyone here sees things slightly different, and it's always good to reconsider things from another perspective. And despite what you might think, there are some of us who thoroughly appreciate professional and intellectual reviews and essays, as well as long arguments and challenging discussions. Of course, sometimes we just lurk without adding to them ourselves ;) Also, I think you've done a great job with the Green Screen, so I want to thank you personally for that. I get what you're saying though. Just wanted to say your voice will be missed.
Well, GT, if you do leave you can go out knowing that your opinions will be missed. I've been here only on-and-off for a while, but you and others like godardian were partly really inspired me to go and really write about film. I never really understood the 'robot' impression some seem to have of you; I always saw a pretty great passion for writing clearly and eloquently about something you loved.
So good luck and great success getting that Masters and PhD.
GT, why don't you just take a break? I took a break from mid 2005 until mid 2006 (a whole year) to get control of my drinking problem, and I came back with a drug problem.
Maybe you should start drinking and doing drugs?

the site tells me that i don't have the right privileges to post spoilers when i try to use the button.
My friends, it's that time again. The time of year when the begging begins. When we ask you to donate that money you saved from stealing borrowing music; rope you into giving us those tips you received from seating customers where they wanted to be seated; forking over to us the money you got from your insurance when your phone was stolen...
But before we get to that...
As you all know, we have been unhappy with our current server, especially after they switched off our Search function. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions or referrals to alternate servers (on the cheap) that we could switch to, please, by all means, let us know.
Mac, can you give me the info on our current server specs, our traffic information, and what would be an ideal scenario for us to get a new server? I may be able to help out.

Mac, can you give me the info on our current server specs, our traffic information, and what would be an ideal scenario for us to get a new server? I may be able to help out.
I dunno if this info is exactly what you're looking, but I'll let Michael Wilson explain:
QuoteIt's a very straightforward install. All you need is a server running a recent version of PHP and mySQL. The transition can be a bit difficult for a novice, but if Kal knows what he's doing, he should be able to work thru it OK by adjusting the paths in the database settings file, and the database username and password in the configuration file on the server. I don't know the version of mySQL that dreamhost is running, but if Kal is running one that's roughly equivalent (mySQL version 5 and PHP version 4 or 5), he should be able to host with little program.
Let me know if you need more info.
So, kal, about that server...
Yeah sorry dude.
I think one of the servers I have fits those requirements for sure, what I'm worried about is the traffic. You have that info? How many GB of data transfer we use per month, and how big of a database we need. I guess it should not be a problem. Also, can Michael migrate everything or do we have to do it? I'm not sure I will be able as my guys are way too busy to deal with my 'hobbies'. I'm zero technical so I cannot do it myself.
i have a question.
what are the hidden costs associated with sites like fatcow.com? supposedly for $70 to $88 a year, you can have "unlimited" disk space and "unlimited" bandwidth. does that mean slow loading times and embedded ads?
if it's a livable solution for xixax and less expensive than whatever hosting we've currently got, maybe that's a decent way to save some cash and keep the site alive.
-----
also, i had an idea for xixax's broken search function. perhaps it would be best to encourage users to use google. (or even add a google search bar with the string site:xixax.com built into it...) the forum would have to be read by google more often, but i've noticed that this approach works really well for other forums like macrumors.com, where the forum's own search function sorta sucks.

When we ask you to donate that money you saved from stealing borrowing music; rope you into giving us those tips you received from seating customers where they wanted to be seated; forking over to us the money you got from your insurance when your phone was stolen...
I'm very sorry to say, but we could not find a better deal or be able to afford a new, private server to regain the Search function. It would just be too expensive (monthly, rather than yearly), and we have no plans to add advertising to the site.
We know times are tough and money is tight, but, please, donate what you can. No amount is too small; none is to high either. At the top of the page (or here (http://xixax.com/donations.php)) is where you can place your charity to the collection plate.

LOL. Genius. How much for me to buy ads that say that Stefen wants to sleep with Michael Jackson?
An extra hand to help out with April Fool's Day and the Xixax Awards would have proved benificial. Admins have lives away from xixax too, so finding a collective time for site duties can be a bit difficult. So we decided it was time to add a new admin to our cast of characters; our rouges gallery; our wolves' den. The new admin is someone we have always have had much love and respect for, who is a huge addition to the site with each comment he posts, and who has a sick and twisted sense of humor worthy of admin status...
Please welcome our newest admin: polkablues. :bravo:

Cigarette burns are a beautiful thing. I've gained a new respect for the machinations of the Machiavellian masterminds behind this year's subtle shenanigans. And lost a little for the less observant.
hahahaha
wow i don't know if it's better that some ppl havn't noticed or if that makes it a total failure.
no, it's better. failure for them tho.
I hope it wasn't the Shia in the master crap because if it was everyone figured it out quick and got their posts edited because of it.
Okay, there's been a lot of discussion about April Fools this year... was it a success, was it a failure, did it actually happen? The answer to all those questions is YES, which was also the answer to the question I asked your sister last night. Here's how it went down (April Fools, not your sister):
March 26th rolls around, and the admins realize we haven't come up with a plan. Some ideas are tossed around, but none stick.
March 29th, RK comes up with the idea of creating a new member claiming to have inside knowledge about PTA's new project. Eventually, it's narrowed down to Shia Labeouf being cast as Freddie. It's left up to me to create the new guy and do the first bunch of postings, and then, on the day, Mac is going to post a supposed Variety article confirming his claims.
March 30th, brother macmanus is born. He is loosely based on a guy I went to college with, a complete tool who liked to boast that he had "connections" with Steven Spielberg because he had a friend of a friend who had some low-level job at Amblin Entertainment around the time of Jurassic Park 2. He also was most likely a huge Boondock Saints fan, though I have no verification of that. So he has a name, he has a character, picolas supplies the avatar, and he's off and running.
The idea is that his first post would be short and sweet. Bold statement, nothing to back it up. It works briefly, but suspicions are soon raised about the Boondock Saints connection. Admin HQ goes into full panic mode. Did we go too far with the Boondock Saints? Should we have put more in the first post?
Hell, no! Post number two sells it! Indignant about the possibility of someone not believing his inside info, brother macmanus offers up a randomly plausible-sounding nugget... Matt Saracen from Friday Night Lights. Who would make that up? If I hadn't written it myself, I would have believed it.
By this time, April Fools Day is only a day away, and I have to sell sell sell as fast as I can to set up for the big reveal. All is going well, until April First rolls around, and I make the biggest fuck up of all.
As I said, the idea was for bro-mac to set up the possibility of Lebeouf, and then Mac would hit us with the Variety article and make our heads collectively explode. Had we started the plan a week earlier, I could have made all the same posts stretched farther apart, played the whole "the role is Labeouf's if he wants it" card a few days prior to the First, and then the Variety article would hit on April Fools Day, at which point we hope nobody has a calendar nearby. But instead, having to cram the whole thing into two days, I overplayed my hand and nobody folded.
Once again, Admin HQ goes into lockdown as we ponder the biggest Xixax April Fools Day Fail in our history (also my first as an admin... let's not linger on that connection for too long). Out of desperation to wring some last drop of humor out of the day, RK makes the suggestion to edit everyone's skeptical responses to be positive ones. I don't know if it was funny for anyone else, but it was for us.
In the interest of keeping brother macmanus as viable character, I decide to have him flip his shit about nobody believing his scoop. Sort of works, whatever. I got Silias to feel bad for the guy. We're basically clusterfucking at this point.
BUT WAIT! There's still a possibility to salvage this. Mac's Variety article hasn't been posted yet, so we decide to wait a day, then post it with a different actor cast as Freddie, one who hasn't been mentioned in any of macmanus' posts. Specifically, the sparkly vampire from Twilight.
Mac posts the Variety news, people kind of sort of seem to almost buy it, so I follow up with a Hollywood Reporter link that goes nowhere, which seems to keep it alive a little longer.
Of course, we didn't really anticipate that for the most part people were totally cool with the idea of the sparkly vampire from Twilight being cast. Maybe that was the April Fools prank you all played on us...
So that was April Fools. Hastily planned, unevenly executed, and questionably successful. But for those keeping score:
-If you believed that brother macmanus was a real person, XIXAX WINS APRIL FOOLS DAY.
-If you believed (even for a moment) that Shia Labeouf was going to be in The Master, XIXAX WINS APRIL FOOLS DAY.
-If, after deciding that Shia was an April Fools joke, you believed that the sparkly vampire from Twilight was going to be in The Master, XIXAX WINS APRIL FOOLS DAY.
-If, after being unable to open the Hollywood Reporter link, you tried clearing your cache like I advised you to, I NOW OWN YOUR SOUL (I'll be gentle with it).
-If you didn't know by April 3rd whether or not we had done anything for April Fools Day, XIXAX WINS APRIL FOOLS DAY.
Well done. I thought the Variety article sounded a bit made up, but it did tempt me to almost rent New Moon. What makes me ill is that I was almost coming around to Pattinson in the film.....I got worked.
I still like Renner for the part.
Wow! It was like I was actually there!
Everyone figured out the Shia thing right away. It was obvious that was a joke since you guys edited everyones posts which gave it away.
I believed the Pattison thing because it seems believable. I'm kind of bummed it's not true.
But Shia in a PTA flick on April 1st with sources that go nowhere? Come on. That ones obvious.
April Fools is always a great time aroud here but you can't hit a homerun every at bat. You're allowed a strikeout because you usually get on base.
Maybe Private Witt is haunting April 1st and it will never be the same?

It was pretty clear that no one was buying it even before we did that. That's WHY we did that, just to keep having fun with it.
And don't even pretend you didn't have a moment of rage at the idea of PTA having to negotiate shooting schedules with Michael Bay. :yabbse-wink:

bromanus reminded me of foreplayjizzer69 and i was friendly to him with hopes hed stick around with his info. even on april foos i thought perhaps he was a legit newb that just came at the wrong time. hilarious play when we all called out the prank and bromanus comes in with his confusion: lol, what? then outta the blue he turned into maniacmanus.
the post edits were funny too. lol'd at what RK did to mine. especially liked: bromanus gots the goods!
poor bluejay probs hit up PTA's peeps with all these looney queries seeking confirmation.

Oh, as far as the edited posts go... I did accidentally delete one of the originals (sorry), but the rest are still there, hidden. If you want to restore them, go ahead and edit your original post, you'll see what you wrote the first time around still hanging out.
And for the record, I didn't think you guys would fall for Shia.
I still maintain that we could have sold the Shia story if we'd had more time.
and i maintain that this was the greatest xixax april foolsFAILever!!!!!!!!!!
I definitely didn't see the threads in which mcmanus was posting, or at least totally wrote him off like I write off the rest of everyone with a post count under 500.
Bravo, though. Subtlety is the name of this year's April Fools.

I repeated a fools joke a friend had heard and told me, because he thought it was real, about a man being arrested at the particle accelerator for claiming to be a time traveler (and that if the machine was turned on the world would end). I told everyone I know basically. I mean I was calling people and telling them. But then my favorite story of the year was an April 1 joke, which I found out about approx. April 6, as I was telling someone else the story, and right when I go "You know why I love this story?" he goes "Wasn't that an April Fools joke?" at which point I'm so deflated all I can do is pretend not to hear and continue through. And then in a quiet room I have to ask, "Excuse me, did you happen to mention the story was an April Fools joke? Haaha. Really, it's even more humorous now. Yes, excellent, good to know." I left the party a little earlier than usual.
I never believe anything from February 23rd and June 17th.

No guy, much to my chagrin.

everyone, i've enabled the use of the "spoiler" feature for all members. for some reason this was only previously available to admin.,
let's try it out, below i will post something in this style:

and what you should see is a button that reads "spoiler" which you should be able to click to unfold the spoiler material..
Pope John II's last words: "pope sled"
if it works, start to use it. of course you can still do the white text thing if you want to be lame,.
SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!
still not working!
it displays a msg that says I dont have perission to use it.
ok that's bullshit.
forget i said anything folks!
we really need an upgrade to the board.
April Fools!
I'd just like to say the news headlines highlighting what new and old threads are hot, which films deserve to be talked about and just headlines keeping us up with xixax are fantastic. Only beef is that you have to wait and watch for them to say something new instead of refreshing your browser. Also, implement it for people who have their xixax bookmark set to new replies/posts only.
I watch it everytime I come to xixax and it always delivers.
Yeah it's great. I love that new thing too.
This one though I gotta question : ''Better late than never: Mother and Caché still two of the best films of the 2000s. (But not really)''
Mother came out like 2 days before 2010 dudes.
After listening to your incessant whining feedback and analysing xixax trends we have decided to introduce THREE new director forums and one upgrade!
You will now be able to delve into all the minute details and niche discussions to be found in the following new categories:
Terrence Malick (http://xixax.com/index.php?board=68.0)
You asked for it, we thought sure why not, and so here it is! Let's make the most of his current resurrection.
Christopher Nolan (http://xixax.com/index.php?board=67.0)
He might have just peaked but right now he is the most talked about director on the forums and his future releases will provide ample speculation and theorizing, we're pretty sure.
Pixar (http://xixax.com/index.php?board=69.0)
This was a long time coming. The most consistent and creative collective of genius filmmakers to grace the film world with amazing works of art since Kubrick cloned himself and single handedly ghost-directed the entire golden era of 70s American cinema. It happened.
and we've made a logical upgrade to Spielberg's forum with the addition of James Cameron and Peter Jackson (http://xixax.com/index.php?board=33.0). Notably missing: George Lucas.
You will also notice that we have disbanded the Three Amigos.. aka The Three Amigwho?s cos no one was talking about them, and frankly it wasn't your fault since there was nothing talk about.
Enjoy the new forums, as always their success depends on your input.
Does anyone know how to make it where, when you quote a post, it brings you to a new page instead of just adding the quote to the quick reply? It's a pain in the ass to have to copy the quote and choose reply instead of it doing it on its own.
You can get rid of quick-reply altogether under Look & Layout Preferences in your profile. Set it to "don't show at all". Then hitting the quote button will work the way you want it to.
Xixax was down all morning, but it seems to be back to normal now. No concrete confirmation as to what caused the outage, but if I were to venture a guess, it was because you touch yourself at night.
Totally worth it.
I freaked out and thought work had blocked it.

I don't even check or write on the site so much anymore... but I'm worried about what would happen to most of you if the site shuts down. We don't need more crazy people on the streets or people stalking Lindsay Lohan.
Therefore... I just donated.
We've almost reached our goal.
All those nights spent drunk posting... Take those aluminum cans and trade them in for a cash towards a donation. Then you can continue to recycle posts for another year.
Did you win money off the Super Bowl? Use that cash toward saving xixax. Still a ways from our goal.

yeah, how much are we talking that's left to raise? i chipped in but i have no idea if what i contributed makes a difference. i'm ridiculously broke at the moment but i won't be in a couple of weeks and i can help a little more at that time if there's still a need. if you don't want to put up numbers, maybe an infographic showing what we have, what's left to be comfortable, and what's left to hit the minimum would be helpful.
edit: grabbed the quote from the wrong post. yay drunk posting
We should have a drunkpostathon to raise money for the site sometime. I don't know how it would work, but we should all set aside a night where we all just get drunk together and post and post in a bunch of threads and have a bunch of conversations about every movie, band and topic ever like we're at a bar or something. We should all just drunk post together sometime.
If that's not the best idea ever, I don't know what is (electricity, maybe)
haven't donated yet this year because i'm a douche but i will, i always coms here from iphone or work these past weeks so paypal is no-no. Lame excuse i know. Ill donate.
You guys were totally fooled, weren't you?

Next year we'll just do the exact same thing but with Pas.

Just saw the scroll lamenting the state of this place. I really don't think it's so bad. I still stop by almost every day. I just don't have much to say, and don't see nearly as many movies as I used to (no art houses close by, and who wants to pay to sit with a bunch of strangers). I did however vacation in Alabama a few weeks ago, and I saw a couple good movies at the dollar theatre there that were still relatively new. The place was PACKED on a Saturday night, which was pretty great.
Seems to be a TV renaissance of sorts, too (and has been for the past several years). Greatly loking forward to Breaking Bad this summer, and Mad Men in 2012.

It's true. When the PTA forum shut down, the now-legendary Michael Wilson (http://maddancer.com/ourstory.html) (peace be upon him) volunteered this domain (and his various skills) for our new gathering place. He was a Nina Hagen fan and hoped to someday use the domain for something. "Why not our new message board?" he said. And then history was made. And there was no turning back. Forever.
But yes, "Xixax" is best pronounced with manic/homicidal fervor a la Nina Hagen.
ALSO
When using the search, please use the advanced search and limit your search to specific forums. Using the search function without doing this can take the site offline. We've been around since 2003, and we don't delete old posts, so our database is enormous.

Downvoting has been disabled.
We should probably expound on that.
Essentially, when we decided to try out a karma system, the idea was born out of wanting to have a simple "like" system so that people could show appreciation for a post without necessarily having to reply to it. When we first installed this system, we just left it in its default settings to see how it went, and while there didn't seem to be any problems with enabling downvoting, we decided to go through with our original conception and change it to a system of appreciation only.
If you don't like a post, feel free to reply with a witty rejoinder, as always.

So, all 80 of your votes were positive ones?

Yes. Especially now that signatures comparing members of the board to Nazis have been rid of.
I think that, more accurately, he was comparing us to jews.

funny you should ask since you were part of the reason he went nuts..
some days ago you were kind enough to humorously point out (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=12281.msg317512#msg317512) that Tyler had ended the spoiler tag prematurely in one of his posts (since then it has been moved to the spoiler section).. you were right, and Tyler promptly edited his post in accordance with what you said.
all seemed fine but then i think his meds ran out and he pretty much had a mental breakdown in the shoutbox, he ranted that everyone was out to get him, culminating in the infamous line "this is the last time y'all treat me like a child!" after which he stormed out like a sullen teen.. unfortunately as the shoutbox was upgraded this unnerving outburst only exists in archive.
following this resolute display of ignominy (famous around these parts for occurring right before members flame out to oblivion), tyler changed his signature to this:
Quote"Hitler had the right idea, he was just an under-achiever... KILL THEM ALL ADOLF!!!! Please rain 40 days and 40 nights and wash these turds off my fucking life... Wash this human waste of flesh and bones off this planet.. Please God, KILLALL THESE FUCKING PEOPLE!!!"
^ What runs through my mind as I browse this site... But, "You will be the first to leave".
the kid strikes me as seriously bipolar, as he has since mellowed out and seemingly denounced his transgressions to the point of pretending he wasn't the one downvoting everything in sight. despite all this, i'm willing to give the kid a third chance. mainly because i'm a sucker for redemption stories and this awesome synchronicity (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=10940.msg317699#msg317699).
I actually feel bad for you guys for not knowing Bill Hicks Famous rant.... Seriously, guys... I am dissapointed of you.
As far as my little rant in the shoutbox, I admit I was drunk and mad that night, and I'm not one for apologies... But I honestly apologize for that. Looking back on it now, it was fucking hilarious haha.

recent member ExtinctPanda is now.. extinct.
this user was actually a secondary account started by InTylerWeTrust.
i want to bring his to your collective attention to serve as a reminder that secondary accounts are not allowed. they were tolerated in the past, and we got some good novelty accounts out of it, as some of you may remember i personally used Newtron while on hiatus for a few months in 2003. but as usual, the reason we can't have nice things is because a few bad trolls used secondary accounts for malicious purposes and for many years now we have not allowed it.
Tyler's latest incarnation was not even his first attempt at running a secondary account. the first attempt was nipped in the bud before he got a chance to use it. as such, he was given a warning and explained what i have said to you all now. ExtinctPanda slipped through the cracks and you may have wondered why such a recent newb with nary a post to his name would have suddenly amassed nearly +10 respect. well he obviously did not give a fuck and blatantly broke the simple rule again without any excuse of ignorance.
Tyler cannot be trusted. we get a few of these freaks coming through our doors every so often and it saddens me each time. it's one thing to be a lying hypocritical motherfucker in real life and another to carry that personality online.. that's not the kind of environment we want to create in this forum. here our value IS only as good as our word, and the best parts of the board have always been the result of members expressing their honest opinion and showing some kind of true identity.
it's why we all know and loved when Matt pointed out what makes Stefen stefen (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=12293.msg317880#msg317880), it's why you can say madonna and know that MacGuffin will instantly appear to lambast her, it's why we can always depend on polka to make delicious gifs. it's also why i personally am ready with the ban hammer to act on tyler, i've had enough of his attempts to ruin the board and his general lack of respect for the community.. not just this instance but his flame outs, paranoid delusions about other members, and the fact HE was the reason we took away downvoting (mac was NOT kidding when he joked that tyler's 80 votes up to that point were all negative).
but over the years i have also tried to curb my temper and not act on (arguably correct) instincts. so i am letting you all know the reasons why this guy is on the brink of disappearing. if he is legitimately medically bipolar then he needs to take his medication.. otherwise, that's that.
I love our community, and i like Tyler.
this is like, your fourth strike Tyler, and you're still here, so be good so you can stay, because i think you could be great here.

You do? Well, I don't.
Maybe he's acting this way because he's bipolar and forgot to take his meds or maybe he just drank one too many bears. Whatever his excuse is, I just DON'T LIKE HIM... and don't trust him either.
Sometimes I wonder how he got here and what he's after, seems too easy that he just "came across us". He has been given multiple chances and he keeps fucking up. He's thoughtless in his remarks, he's a troublemaker and frankly, he's a goddamn moron. I think he's the way he is because his past failures bother him and his life is a complete struggle. (not to mention he's kind of an attention whore).
Yes, he has a +20 but that doesn't mean anything and to be honest, with the reputation he's building for himself, I'd be surprised if he ever gets another +1 again.
He's a pathological liar, he's delusional , he's extremely dangerous and he will be our undoing if we continue to have him here. But I kinda feel sorry for him, I feel is my duty as a xixaxer to give him YET another chance. I mean, if WE are not helping him... then it is WE who have failed HIM.
But then again, perhaps he's past help................. or
insane. (Sadly, I think it's the latter).... Hopefully after this, he will learn how to behave... Hopefully.

Down voting could have been one of the greatest things to ever happen to this site if they were all made public instead of anonymous. Imagine the beefs it could have created. Allegiances being formed, cliques, rebels and nomads, etc. Not only that but the danger of being ostracised from the community would either make everyone bring their A game or worst case scenario lead to some pretty entertaining flame outs. Pretty much everyone wins. A public reputation system is basically an internet forums own method of natural selection. I doubt there is anyone here who doesn't believe in natural selection. Does anyone know of anyone here who doesn't believe in natural selection?
Bring back down voting but get rid of the anonymity (for up votes too) so we all have to man up when we do it instead of two-facing the way catty females do.
THEN LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

what the hell was that

latest in the Tyler saga:
Crazy ole Ty went on a mad voting spree recently but this time instead of trying to ruin the board with negativity he went through my entire post history and upvoted about 30-40 random posts. This has given me +115 at time of printing.
As thankful as I am for his epic trolling gesture, I will be resetting the number to what it was prior to his latest and most interesting (albeit highly transparent) desperate cry for attention. to reward his efforts he has been given his own little member group consisting of just himself (you'll notice it under his username) with the very special privilege of not being able to vote anymore. At all.
We hope this will be the equivalent of castration for his particular form of depravity.
Thanks for that Pubrick. I wanna up-vote your comment so bad, ARGH *Shakes fist*.
I actually like it better than before. You gave me my own little group, SO BOSS. You guys are so awesome!

Tyler has been banned. When he first appeared, we honestly thought that his enthusiasm might eventually outweigh the early signs of trollery. But that turned out not to be the case.
Creating a second account is technically a bannable offense (though we try not to be that harsh). Doing it again after being personally warned is certainly a bannable offense. Exploiting board functionality is yet another bannable offense, in this case the Respect system, after taking it faaaar too seriously and creating drama about it whenever possible.
While those are the main reasons, his ceaseless antagonism was obviously another consideration. Admittedly we admins got baited into arguments with him to a somewhat embarrassing extent.
Anyway, enough said. Time for us to get on with things. Thanks to everyone for having patience with all of that.

I liked Tyler and I still do, but I think the banning was good for everyone involved. I guess some newbs have a complex about 'making their mark' when they start out here and appearing like they fit in, but he was a bit overzealous in going for quantity over quality of his posts. We can usually forgive that of people who are just learning the ropes, but his defensive attitude is what fucked him in the end, always does. What every new member should know is that P is gonna call you on your shit and however you handle that will dictate your success in this place in the future. I feel bad for Pubrick always taking the brunt of the newb flamings, but I guess he's just the most mentally equipped to deal with it and lay down the law for them. I just went back and had to delete some utterly useless posts of mine. I know that I've been really annoying in the past, I was a much harder drinker and drugger back then, too. But I try not to step on anyone's toes or get at their throats and look where I am now. Still an ass, but an ass who gets to use THIS SITE.
So, yeah. I'm still in touch with Tyler and he's not really resentful about it. There's plenty other sites to pontificate about PTA, but everyone knows this is the best and I'm sure he'll be a little saddened when he see's 'The Master' tomorrow and doesn't get to come here and rant and rave about it, but he'll be all the wiser for it.
Anyways, I just had to clear the air about that because you all knew me and Ty were BFF's, but the real reason I came here was to inform the admins that there are two irreversible threads,
http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=532.0 (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=532.0)
http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=2015.0 (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=2015.0)

Changing subjects, with good reason:
Maybe make the Shoutbox available on the Recent Unread Topics page? I visit that page more than the main page, and I can imagine there are a lot of other people who do as well.
Remember when the shoutbox was at the top of every SINGLE page? That was annoying as fuck, Polka. Good times

Anyway I've merged the two irreversible threads.
And ono I'll look into it but I think we might be stuck with it as is.

I just checked the shoutbox mod's settings, and it looks like it might be possible. We'd have to figure out if it's something most people want, though.
Thy will be done.
If anyone has issues with it/doesn't want it there, speak up now, or forever deal with it.

I also use the "New Unread Posts" feature a lot, so I like this very much.
Thank you very much. :yabbse-thumbup: And if someone happens not to like it there, they can just click that little "-" button at top right, and it'll be "minimized."
Any way it could be minimized by default instead and people who want to read it can click to maximize? Only reason is that there's been some times when (potentially) spoiler stuff for certain films/shows has found its way into the shoutbox which sucks for those of us who have made the point of trying to avoid the relevant threads.

Sleepless, I've been working on that exact issue for a while, with no success yet. I'm going to keep looking for an answer to that one, though.
We Johnny-come-latelys appreciate it.
The next thing xixax has to do is create a function to log or save links, videos, or posts and such. Similar to what 'favoriting' does on twitter. There's such a wealth of information on 'The Master' here, it sucks to have to go back and dig it all up.
There's already a bookmarking function. Is that what you mean?
oooh tell me more. I'm sure this place has tons of bells and whistles I don't know about.
Apparently you can only bookmark topics, so it's limited. But you should buttons for this near the top of the page on any topic.
Similar to reelists approach, could we maybe compile a lot o the press for 'the master,' in one thread, just to have it there? Would this be too much work?
Should I start doing this?
Gesundheit.
Thanks.
Due to popular demand not to have to look at it all the time, the Shoutbox has been moved to the bottom of the page, just below Recent Posts. The contents of the Shoutbox will remain frivolous.
EDIT: And now the Google Search bar has been moved to the top as well.
I don't see it.
For some reason, moving it to the bottom of the main page made it disappear from the Unread Posts page. I have no idea why this is, but I'm trying to figure it out. In the meantime, shouting is only happening on the main index page.
Now would be a good time to point out that I'm figuring all this stuff out as I go.
EDIT: Holy shit, I think I got it. It comes out a little weirdly-formatted on the Unread Posts page, but it's there.
Nice job.
Now, aesthetically speaking, I think it would look better if on the main page, the Google search bar was above the news ticker. The shoutbox looks fine on the main page. On the Recent Unread Topics page, I think it would look just a smidge better if all that SMF jibberjabber was moved to the bottom of the page.

You're right. I've fixed that. The formatting of the shoutbox is still weird on that page, but that's just always going to be the case, I think; it wasn't designed to be put in that spot, so it doesn't fit in seamlessly there.
As for the search bar, I tried it above the News ticker at first and it looked weird, so I moved it below the news ticker and it still looked weird, so I winnowed it down to just the bar and logo and it looked less weird, so I left it. Long story long, now it's back above the news ticker. Somewhat less weird-looking.
Why can't you guys get rid of the useless search bar, you think that's funny?

Are you talking about the fully functional Google search bar, or the search bar that appears under the marquee when you have the header expanded? I'm assuming that one, because otherwise what you said would make no sense. The story of that one is that I don't feel like poring through blocks of code that I don't understand just to find the line I have to delete to remove it when you can just not try to use it and use the Google bar that works instead.
Also, I recommend just hiding the header. It's kind of unnecessary.

Oh, but that one does work! I complained about it without trying it first. Just wondering.
Well, I'll be damned. Even so, we recommend that people use the Google search bar normally, and save the other one for last resort situations. Because unlike some other boards, we don't delete old messages after however long, so our index is huge and the regular site search puts a big load on the webhost's servers and makes them unhappy with us.
Who deals with the web hosting server? Feels like we've had the same shit forever and prices have gone down, storage and performance up. We should be able to get something a lot better now if we continue to pay the same.
If anyone knows of a great web host, ideally if you have first-hand experience with them, let Mac know. Dreamhost is better than it used to be, but I think we would all be happy to migrate if there's something definitively better out there.
Has anyone not been getting Notifications in the last few weeks or so?

not just you...
Me too.
Dreamhost is terrible. We've been planning to switch hosts since we're near the end of our term with them.
samesies
It looks like we are probably transferring our domain and hosting soon. If there's a glitch during the process and the site goes down (unlikely), rest assured that we will be back up.
I'm doing the domain and hosting transfer tonight.
Assuming things work as they should, the site will not fully go down.
However, there will be a period of time when no new posts will be saved. I'll post a warning when that begins.
Starting now, new posts will not be saved.
I'll update when the transfer is complete.
Currently downloading the site from the FTP. The download speed is varying wildly, because Dreamhost is terrible.
Once that's done, I will complete the transfer and upload the site to our new host. When that upload is complete, I'll switch over the nameservers.
Then, and only then, will new posts be saved. This could take some time.
thanks for all your hard work JB :bravo:
may the props i give you be saved
Thanks. Maybe the universe will make an exception. :yabbse-grin:
New posts will now be saved, but we're not quite done.
The long version:
We're hung on the last step, waiting for approval from the previous registrar. It's a formality, but it looks like they're doing it manually. It could be 1 day, or it could be 7 days.
I will make a backup right before I finalize the transfer (saving everything posted until that moment), and that's when I'll announce the ACTUAL period of lost posts, which should only last a couple hours at the most. I will make frequent backups until then, just in case something goes haywire.
u da man JB
I'm planning to switch the servers tonight.
Like before, I'll post a "lost posts" warning before I download the site. It will be 8 PM central or later.
Starting now, new posts will not be saved!
Hopefully this won't take too long.
This could take a while.
It's working, but the upload is very slow.
Well kids, looks like it's delayed again. We have a few things to figure out. But posts WILL be saved now.
Commence posting!
I'm fairly sure I've figured everything out. I now have a cloned version of Xixax running on a different domain, as a test, and it appears to be working.
I will start the process for real within a couple hours. I will put the forum in Maintenance Mode, so you won't be able to post. All posts until then will be saved, so feel free to keep posting until the forum gets locked down.
If things go according to plan, it should be finished tonight.
However, in some cases a nameserver switch can take up to 48 hours. But sometimes it's instant. So it could be the luck of the draw.
All my fingers are crossed with all my other fingers.
The internet was boring me to tears these past few hours without xixax. Glad we're back, thanks JB. So what's different?
test
test
(Okay, not really a test. I just needed the first post on the next page.)
What's different
- We used to be hosted by Dreamhost, and registered with Directnic. I switched us over entirely to Go Daddy.
- In short: it's better and cheaper.
- We now have unlimited bandwidth.
- Improved security.
- The search function works.
- We have more storage space than we'll ever need.
- The site definitely seems faster to me. (Anyone else?)
A call to action
- Please post here if you find any problems.
- Use the search (http://xixax.com/index.php?action=search) function! I'd like to see how it holds up.
- Donate (http://xixax.com/donations.php) if you'd like.
Search seems to be working great. When I have a moment, I'll kill the ugly Google bar at the top of the page.
One lingering issue, which should never happen again after the 48 hour propagation period...
I got kicked back to the old version of the site for about 3 hours, ending just now. Pubrick too. And Cloudy I think, and probably some others. I see that it didn't happen to everyone.
Some ISPs take longer than others to fully flush out their old domain records. Apparently some (or most?) ISPs have multiple sets of domain records and swap back and forth among them, and you have to wait for all to be updated. This would explain why I've been reverted twice now for a period of 3-4 hours, last night and then again tonight.
This might happen again before Tuesday night. If it ever happens after that, let me know. (Something would be very wrong and very weird if it did.)
Awesome.
Recently made the realisation that the site wasn't actually down for as long as I thought, I simply forgot that I was logged out in the process.
Here's why the site went down today, according to tech support. This also explains the occasional slowness, which should now be completely fixed. (Let me know if it's not!)
Some other website on our shared server was overloading the entire server with traffic. Go Daddy will now be forcing them to use a dedicated server, because a website with that much traffic has no business being hosted on a shared server.
When a server gets overloaded like that, it goes into "network protection mode," which filters traffic or shuts things down so the server doesn't get destroyed.
They went out of their way to tell me we didn't do anything wrong and couldn't have prevented it. And apparently our bandwidth usage is completely fine. (We have unlimited bandwidth, but I wanted to ask anyway.)

The next thing xixax has to do is create a function to log or save links, videos, or posts and such. Similar to what 'favoriting' does on twitter. There's such a wealth of information on 'The Master' here, it sucks to have to go back and dig it all up.

Apparently you can only bookmark topics, so it's limited. But you should find buttons for this near the top of the page on any topic.
when you mark something as 'unread' isn't it supposed to show up in your 'unread topics'? It's not doing that for me, thought I had it down. I wanna make use of this great feature so xixax is less boring.
I miss is the xixax logo on the tab.

JB, can you add that or is there a reason you didnt?
Oh weird, I didn't notice that.
I'll take a look soon. It should be an easy fix.
Fixed.

I just tried to replicate your problem and was unable to. When I click "Mark Unread" under a topic, it shows up in my New Unread Posts just like it should.
But then, you can only mark threads as unread, not individual posts, so functionally you may as well just use the bookmark feature if you're looking to save a thread for later.
must've just been a glitch in my 1981 mac.

It's working for me on all browsers. It wasn't immediately, though. You might have to clear your cache for xixax.com and/or wait.
xixax is acting all slow on me again today. It's all your fault, JB.
GoDaddy is having problems today system-wide, apparently.
I have been looking into the header issue. I have yet to find anything that's broken, any malicious code, or anything like that. Getting some support on the SMF forums.
Are the banner images stuck for everyone? Please tell me if they are working for you.
Working fine for me. Newest version of Firefox.
EDIT: Check that, it's not ENTIRELY working. If I do a soft refresh or go to a different page, the same banners stay there. If I do a hard refresh (SHIFT+RELOAD) then it'll load new banners.
EDIT 2: The behavior seems really erratic. Best advice I can give I think is to edit the script to tell the browser to always pull a new version of the image from the server. I think some browsers are cacheing the image and being lazy instead of pulling a fresh version, and that's why on some page loads you get a previously-seen image.
--
Had some ideas about the Karma, too. It's be nice if on the page where it lists your last posts you could see what rating it had without having to click on it. And another feature where you could click and see all your posts that have gotten any sort of rating. Thought it'd be nice 'cause otherwise there's no way to see where the rating came from. Maybe you could just somehow sort your posts by rating.
Using Chrome. Banner has been Nicolas Cage and "Posting, It Works Both Ways" for about a week now.

The problem is, that's exactly what the scripts are written to do, and what they have always done until recently. What we can't figure out is why it's now exhibiting this caching behavior after years and years of working fine.

Those would all be useful features. Unfortunately, the karma feature is a mod that we installed, and unless the developer decides to add that stuff on his own and update, it is what it is.

Does holding SHIFT and pressing RELOAD fix it for you? (Not that that would fix the problem, but maybe help narrow it down.)
It could be some change in your webhost's server that has told webpages to use cached images more. Just a shot in the dark.
Doing a hard reload makes it change for me, too. I think you're on the right track; since nothing's changed on the site itself, it's got to be on the server side. I think JB's looking into it.
I do have a secret theory about why this might have started now, and it's nothing bad. We'll see if that turns out to be true.
Anyway, apparently someone on the SMF help forum is going to edit the script for us.
i dont know if this of any help but it doesnt do this for me, ever. :/

Fuuuuuuuuccckkkk I just wrote this long ass PM with like 10 quotes to pubrick about how he needs to be nicer to me. Then I pressed enter and it signed me out and erased everything! I don't think there's any way I can retrieve it. I just wanted to let you guys know that it made me really really mad and I might get drunk because of it.
EDIT: I just rewrote it and realized that there were a few sentences I could've worded better anyway. He's gonna admin me for this one.

glad to hear about your rewrite. better now, hell yeah. i can relate to the problem (from when i've explained things): now i xixax multitab when typing away, to keep my login fresh. c+p is another solution
pubrick has been chill lately. i think you miss him, andbut i think you want him to come back with "daddy hugs" yes, let us both have wishes for this. stand by the door with me, i have this connect four let's please play it while we wait for daddy, and when he comes home let's hug him and sing to him and tell him all our funny stories, about the neighbor and about our friends, and we'll make the chill so frozen we can all live in scifi paradise
^is that a plan? idk 'bout that. but i'm into these new age jokes i've been making. overall, new age jokes > religious jokes, imo
Shouldn't PMs you send be saved in your outbox by default? Because it would suck when people reply and you don't remember what it's about because you forgot to check that box.
Is that an uncustomizable thing on Simple Machines' end or do you guys have some control over it?

Say hello to your new shoutbox moderator, Reelist. Yes, shoutbox moderator. It's a unique and esteemed rank (which I might have created 5 minutes ago).
Reelist can now:
- Edit shoutbox messages
- Delete shoutbox messages
- Clear the shoutbox
THANK GOD
Axolotl is now our second shoutbox moderator. :yabbse-thumbup:

i liked XIXAX in caps much better.
Changed it today. We want new visitors to have some immediate idea of what we are. Probably helps with SEO too.

well cant XIXAX still be in caps? ive always thought it prestigious.
I agree. So I changed it for now. And that catches us up to the current situation.

But when your co-worker sees it in your browser tabs, it looks like XXX Film Forum.

Oh. We're a film forum.
Y'know, I'm just glad that after over 12 long years, we've finally established what this place is about.
We're trying to not confuse strangers as much anymore.
It's about branding. Synergy. Monetizing our assets. Ono, I didn't want you to find out like this, but we're going to be using your avatar for ad space.
Oh, anything to help out the site. By all means!
On this fateful evening, wilder has been fitted with standard-issue jackboots and joins our imperious ranks as Xixax's very first global moderator. Shield your necks, Xixaxers.
Welcome, wilder! :salute:
Finally! I almost pm'd JB to suggest this once. He's (previously along with Macguffin who's ascended to a higher dimension now) been single-handedly keeping the movie portion of this site alive since I've been here.
Now go fix the Grapevine it's driving me insane. :whip:
This has been a long time coming. Not only does wilder consistently reignite my passion for cinema with his movie news, but if you track his posts back to 2008 you'll see how tirelessly he's been doing it. His posts are like a treasure trove of info on the movies you love or know absolutely nothing about. Sometimes I feel like he should be getting paid.
what the heck just happened? did anybody else see that?
Can you be more specific? I haven't been around most of the day.
haha my bad.
i refreshed the site and it took me to some weird yahoo maintenance page with a bunch of numbers. then i looked on my tablet and the page was just text all jumbled. checked my desktop again and it was gone.
Gotcha. Some weird DNS error or something, maybe.
I'm continually impressed by Xixax's foresight to title the originally TV thread "the small screen" - since most of us watch the series on all kinds of non-TV small screens. this forum is truly ahead of 2003.

Greetings, fellow Xixaxers! The time has come once again to ask for donations. We've put a PayPal (https://www.paypalobjects.com/en_US/i/btn/btn_donate_SM.gif) button at the bottom of the page.
Renewal time is approaching in March. I'll go through the details.
Here's a rundown of our recent cost history:
• $78.75 – GoDaddy 3-Year Hosting & Domain (used some major coupons) – March 2013
• We then received a donation of $40.00 – April 2013
• Stopped asking for donations
• $105.00 – Registered for DMCA compliance (http://www.copyright.gov/onlinesp/) (so we won't get sued) – March 2015
• $107.04 – GoDaddy 1-Year Hosting & Domain (no discounts for renewal) – March 2016
Total goal:
$250.79
More details for transparency:

Thanks! Anything is greatly appreciated.
Some birthday money.
Thanks much! :yabbse-grin:
One more donation and I'll change my avatar.
If you're taking suggestions, I would like to nominate this gif of Eli Manning watching his brother win the Super Bowl.

Here, a few bucks!
I love this place.
Let's get a few more contributions! We'll end the donation begging in less than two weeks. It would be lovely to wrap it up with a bang! (To mix metaphors. Unless you're mishandling fireworks.)
Fine, but only slightly more than I donated to Bernie, because I've known Xixax longer.
:yabbse-grin: :yabbse-thumbup:
Yeah, forget Bernie Sanders! Throw a little cash to the refuge you come to talk about 'Bernie' or 'Burn After Reading, Bernardo Bertolucci, even Gael Garcia Bernal...
new marquee: Feel the Burt (Reynolds)
Congratulations, Xixax. You raised $184 to keep the site running!
We are genuinely humbled by the turnout. This is a pretty fantastic result, and in less than two months!
So we're good for now! I renewed our web hosting today. If you haven't, please consider donating sometime this year. Even small amounts are meaningful. (Technically a bit short of the goal, and renewal will come around again.) Donation begging stops today, though.
Thanks again, everyone.
And we definitely used the money to renew the web hosting, not to organize an admin-only poker tournament, that's crazy talk and you should put it out your minds immediately.

HTTPS links now work in the shoutbox.
Don't want to complain given that I do little to contribute (I do donate $$ when needed every time), but I've noticed the overall site organization has been a little sloppy and it's hard to find stuff.
For instance, there are very few films in the "This Year in Film" category, and many films that have come out this year are not there even though some have threads elsewhere.
On the other hand, Fantastic Beasts does show up there instead of being in "The Grapevine".
That's just an example but I have noticed other small things here and there. Too many categories but hard to really navigate.
We need to do a little housekeeping. Maybe some fresh, hungry admin/interns can help?
Alright. I moved Fantastic Beasts to Grapevine. I moved High Rise, Slack Bay, and The Ones Below to This Year. I don't see any other obvious ones at first glance.
I've been insanely busy this month with real life stuff, which should be cooling down soon. But if you (or anyone) ever notice specific things that we've missed that you want changed/fixed/updated, feel free to PM me.
As far as having too many categories, we've already pruned a bunch semi-recently, so that might not be in the cards soon. At a certain point, combining forums makes existing threads harder to find. Other things could be changed, though. Would moving The Director's Chair below Non-Film Discussion make for easier navigation?
Thanks bud. That's why I said you obviously need some help. Are Mac and mod off duty for good?
If I was getting picky I would merge News and Theory and In Front of the Camera as both are essentially the same idea (maybe call it News and Rumors) that's not a specific movie that is being made.
I would put 2015 into The Vault already and just have every film that's not from this year in the same place. That way you have Older Films, Current Films, Upcoming Films, done.
The joke of Ratner is not even funny anymore because he doesn't seem to even be a Director anymore, so maybe we can update The Directors Chair - I don't even know of Lynch and Kubrick generate enough conversation these days to keep them as separate threads, but obviously both of them deserve it so won't mess with that :)
Club 82 and Xix & Xax should also be the same. Can't really tell the difference.
My $0.02 but I do think less is more.
Point taken... If anyone is interested in being a moderator, definitely let us know and we'll consider it. Tasks/powers would include moving threads, making helpful edits when you see fit (like spoilers or broken urls), and possibly editing the news.
Club 82 is the esoteric forum. More info here (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=13054.0). Basically it's the forum exclusive to regulars. There are quite a few threads there that we'd rather keep somewhat private (like the dream thread).
Absorbing "In Front of the Camera" into "News and Theory" is a good idea, I think. Any other opinions on that?
I don't like combining 2015 and The Vault, though. When we're doing awards and making year-end lists, it's valuable to have last year's movies still there for a while. I suppose you could make an argument for absorbing last year into the vault around summer, but that would feel weird. (Also, shuffling/changing those forums at the end of the year is actually relatively painless.)
I moved some more threads around, lots of stuff in The Grapevine lingering from 2015 or earlier that never got a wider release than the festival circuit, and probably never will.
One thing that gets confusing is that movies will premiere at a major festival but be held off for a general release for almost a year, or have a non-US theatrical run earlier than a domestic (US) release - i.e. Slack Bay is out in France but the US release is TBD. Which dates are we going by?
We should go by US theatrical (i.e. not festival) or VOD release.
But I think there should be an exception if enough of us are seeing it, like what happened with The Lobster.

We're back up! Hooray! The website was down since this morning. Thanks for your patience.
On the plus side: Godaddy tech support is actually great if you manage to find a phone number. And I learned a thing or two, so that's good.
FYI, if the site is ever down for an extended period of time, go to the imdb forum for Magnolia, and I'll post an update there (which we've done in the past). Or email me at xixaxfilmforum@gmail.com, and you'll get a response.
EDIT: Had to revert this avatar change because of a margin resizing issue. Will hopefully get it worked out. Avatar max is currently 250 width & 275 height.
We increased the allowable avatar width from 250 to 275.
Also increased the width of attachment thumbnails.
We may go even bigger in the future. People seem to have wider/larger monitors these days. But let us know if this causes any problems.
We've changed the colors of "staff" ranks, because the default colors are not great. It may be further adjusted, but I think this is an improvement! Now you won't see an ocean of red in the shoutbox.

FYI, hosting renews March 2nd. We should do some kind of fund drive in a year, but let's skip it for now. Donate if you're moved to, but don't feel bad if you're not. (It kinda feels like there are more urgent causes at the moment.)
I noticed that SMF 2.0.15 was released a couple of weeks ago. I'm sure you're aware of it, but just thought I'd bring it up. ( noticed we were on 2.0.11.) You going to wait for stable 2.1 before upgrading to that?
Thanks for the reminder. I updated to 13, but the installer warns of an error updating to 14, so I can't go further without doing it manually, which I may try.
I will be testing out 2.1 beta at some point. But obviously somewhere other than the live forum.
I just noticed that according to the stats, there are over 1,700 members of this forum. I seem to recall that there are only 50+ that contribute on a regular basis (am I remembering that correctly)? Thats, like, a 3% participation rate.
Is that typical for an online forum??

I wouldn't know, but there are a lot of guests and lurkers in any forum. The nature of the medium lends itself to that.

1700 active or 1700 total registered? what is the number of monthly active users or visitors? We've been around for ~15 years, so not surprising that so many people are inactive. And now that I think of it, it's pretty incredible I can't think of many other sites I continue to visit regularly in so many years.
3% is a very low percentage, to answer your question, but depends on how you are measuring this percentage.
We had some server stability issues today resulting in 503 errors. I just reset all the PHP processes that were running on the server, which is apparently a common fix. If that doesn't work, I'll open a ticket.
Please let me know if you see any such connection issues!
Connection issues have continued and will continue in the short term.
I'm going to move us to a new hosting provider.
We are apparently on one of Godaddy's "legacy" servers, which does not have the latest version of PHP. That is probably causing errors in our PHP scripts, resulting in extra connections, server overload, and downtime. They're offering to migrate us to one of their newer actually functional servers, but for an unreasonable cost.
If anyone has suggestions for good hosts, let me know here. But I'm going to see which servers work best with our forum software.
I would like to sign up for a new host and do a test run of migrating the site before I actually pull the plug on Godaddy.
If the site unexpectedly goes down for a while, assume that I'm working on it. If our current server becomes especially uncooperative, there is a possibility that we could be down for days at a time. But rest assured it would be temporary.
thumbs up for doing a good job and keeping this site running in general!
My current working theory is that the shoutbox clear has fixed the problem. We'll see.
So PLEASE keep an eye out and report any errors you see... especially looking for "503 Service Unavailable" or "cannot connect to database."
Got several 503 errors this morning.
Disabled the shoutbox to see if that's the culprit. (Can freely toggle it on/off.)
We will definitely be getting a new host and updated forum software sometime in January.
got it a few times yesterday, nothing today.
Still getting the error pretty regularly.
Messing with some things. Site may look weird for a bit.
Seems stable for now. Something I did might have worked.
If stability continues, I might try re-enabling the shoutbox.
Already signed up for the new host and will be experimenting soon.
In the mean time, why not use the Random Chat Thread (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=13182.0) as a substitute for the shoutbox?

you might? otherwise you won't re-enable it before you get a new host?
If it turns out the shoutbox is bugging out and crippling the server, yeah, we'll have to leave it disabled until a server switch.
Errors continue. So essentially I've been unable to find a temporary solution. We may just need to deal with instability for now. Always copy your posts before you post them!
Enabled the shoutbox because #YOLO.
I've already started messing with our new host. But the process will take a while. Maybe a week, I would guess. It involves experimenting with forum software and corresponding with tech support, over a long holiday weekend no less.
Side note: Interesting that the server was stable for most of the day, but now as we approach peak time it's getting terrible. Godaddy may be more to blame than I realized.

And now after peak time, the server is stable again. #confirmationbias
Seems to be the same today. Server is fine during non-busy times, but during the peak hours it basically shuts down.
I can reliably (and I mean 100% reliably) access the forum for about 20 seconds if I end all our processes, but then they start up again and Godaddy is like nope this modest number of processes is simply too much activity right now. I'm guessing another website on our shared server is out of control. I'll try to open a chat with them sometime soon, but it's offline right now. (Side note, I like how they have an entire section called "Open a Ticket," but they've long discontinued tickets—it's all live chat or phone now.)
Steadily trying new installs on our new host, but as I expected, tech support is slow to correspond on this holiday weekend.
I would still expect some rough times for the next week.
Tried something new. Fingers crossed.
It will be hilarious if this works (which it has so far). There was a file error discovered by tech support at our new host. So I simply made that change here too.
I want to believe.
I'm enjoying this story unfold way more than several "First" movies I've seen this year.
Tentatively planning to migrate the site to our new server on Saturday, January 12. The site could be down for at least a day, maybe up to 3 or 4. (They say to underpromise and overdeliver.) By then I will have done enough testing to make it smooth, though, hopefully.
We're behind you with homemade swords and shields (cobbled together from old VHS tapes and DVDs). One need but give the clarion call to join the battle and we'll be there for you.
Still getting some 503 errors today. Based on everything I know, this is probably Godaddy's fault, and there's not much we can do right now. Certainly there are no more modifications I can think to make to our files.
Between now and the migration, we may be turning off the shoutbox periodically. The shoutbox is not the source of our issues, but it uses a lot of resources, and Godaddy is more likely to keep our site up when it's not running.
Clearly, waiting until Jan 12 is a bad idea. Definitely migrating sooner.
If my tests continue to go well, I may take the site down at any point this week. When I do that I will include some sort of informative message, but don't be surprised if Xixax is down for a good chunk of this week. Probably starting this Saturday at the very latest.
Will give some amount of warning, but maybe not much.
Without boring you with the details, my tests on the new host are going very, very well. Really optimistic about this change.
Has the search function been disabled or compromised? I did a search for "favourite" (deliberate spelling) and there were zero results--despite an entire thread on the film.

That's odd. It works when I search for it:
Update on my testing...
Theme
We'll have a new responsive mobile-friendly theme.
Big changes for avatars: They have to be a bit smaller, and (hold your breath) circle or oval-shaped. (Sneak peak below.) I know this could be hard to adjust to, but it actually does help with mobile-friendlyness.
To compensate, I'll allow images to be used in signatures. I think a 400x160 limit looks good from the testing I did. Perfect for an anamorphic screenshot! If you're not thrilled with a circular profile pic, think of this as your new avatar. Signature images are not shown on mobile devices, though.
Modifications
I re-installed and tested all relevant mods and did not run into any issues.
The upvoting mod we use has not been updated in many years and strictly speaking is not compatible with the current updates. So I don't think it should be installed. It doesn't seem that any other good upvoting mods are available. The core/default karma system is bad.
Our current beloved shoutbox will transfer right over. It's not entirely mobile-friendly, but it's passable. Still the best shoutbox from what I can see.
These important embedding mods also work:
- Youtube embed
- Vimeo embed
- Soundcloud embed
Planning to take the site down today. The transfer will probably take at least a day.
Nice job, JB. Appreciate you, sir. :bravo:
I managed to work out the kinks in testing, so the install went pretty smoothly.
Things left to do:
- Install the youtube/vimeo/soundcloud embed mods (need support to get back to me on something)
- Set up SSL (https), which I will probably do next week
Theme
Hopefully people like the theme. There are not many responsive themes for our forum software; this is far and away the best one. It's also, not coincidentally, the most popular SMF theme.
We can look into making some adjustments to the theme. I wouldn't mind making the orange sun a bit lighter. I tried to find that file unsuccessfully before the install. But I might pursue that. We can also change pretty much any color in the theme. Fonts. That sort of thing.
FYI if you didn't notice, you can click the crescent moon at the top right to use a darker version of the theme.
Avatars
You can add an image to your signature, using image tags:
[img]urlofyourimage[/img]
It can be 400x160 (400 pixels wide, 160 pixels in height).
I've changed my profile to show the design intent. (The movie is Revenge (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=14061.0), btw.) Effectively this image can function as a replacement for your avatar. These signature images do not show up on mobile, from what I've seen.
The new avatar is more of a profile picture. If the image you upload is square enough, it shows up as a perfect circle. (Not entirely sure how square it has to be.) If your avatar image is rectangular, it becomes an oval shape.
I love night mode, but it absolutely wrecks the logo. Might have to do a new version of the logo altogether that'll work both ways.
God bless ya Jeremy!!
It's (apparently) a New Dawn and a New Day! :bravo:
Thanks for all your dedication and hard work, dude. Yer awesome!
Thankz JB!!! <3
Don't know the extent of the customization options available, but it just occurred to me that it would be cool if each..."forum"..."sub-forum"? had it's own header. Just thinking out loud... That's for farther down the road, if even possible.
For those who miss the marquee, I set this up:
http://xixax.com/marquee/
Best I can do. Reload it to get new randomized images.
Nice work, JB :bravo:
Please let us know if there's anything we can do to make our new digs more homely as we adjust to the changes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPtorZ2k7Ak).
Just realized we can't get into that +1 circle anymore. (I feel like a jerk.)
The sun is peach-colored now. You may have to do a hard refresh to see the change. I toyed with some changes to the moon but there was a graphical element making that difficult, so leaving it default for now.
I nudged up the font size of posts and quotes by 1 each. Next, trying to increase the font size of the posting field.
Some news: I successfully installed the embed mods. And we should have no issues installing mods or updates in the future. Tech support was stumped on a particular bug. I managed to figure it out and teach them something. (No big deal.)
Vimeo embedability is a new feature for us. We're using the same Youtube and Soundcloud embed mods we had on our previous installation.
In this theme, they all expand to the size of your browser window. Pretty nice.

Done.
You may have noticed that large images get smooshed/distorted if they don't fit the window. To see that image with the proper aspect ratio, just click on it, or tap on mobile.
New year, new Xixax, new logo! Went for a cleaner, more modern style, that hopefully plays well with the regular site look and also looks 1000 times less garish than the old logo in night mode. If you hate it, let me know in this thread, along with a detailed explanation of why not and what makes you so perfect, anyway?
I like it! :yabbse-thumbup:
It's "Dirk Diggler" blue. I approve.
In bright neon lights with like purple outline?
It could cut glass, yunno, like razor sharp.
It's a real logo, Jack.
This is the logo I want them to remember us by.
Dammit, I want to give that a quick +1 because it made me laugh. The price of progress, I guess. Tell your grandkids about when we used to be able to do that until the late aughts.
Can we get spoiler tags now by any chance?
Good idea. Done!
Look for the "Sp" icon when composing a post. Or use this code:
[spoiler]This is a spoiler![/spoiler]
[spoiler=Alternative Label]This is a spoiler![/spoiler]
Test
(https://i.imgur.com/ZnkI8mv.jpg)
Neat.
Disappointed that I couldn't put a spoiler tag in my spoiler tag. I wanted to make a spoilception joke and then leave for good out of embarrassment
Is there any way to go back to the alternating post colors (white/grey)? I'm finding it harder to distinguish messages by different members than before, but maybe this is an MP not a YP.
I totally agree. I can't seem to find a setting to make it do that, but maybe JB will have better luck.
Done. I added an alternate background color for both Sunrise & Midnight modes. You might have to hard refresh to update.
Current alternate colors are:
#F2F3F4 (Sunrise)
#1B2631 (Midnight)
I think these look good, but we could change them. Might be worth trying a lighter grey. (And probably a darker blue for midnight.)
Polka, if you want to mess with it, it's the new code at the very bottom of sunrise.css and midnight.css. From what I could tell, it's not preview-able. Had to save and refresh a page to see.
Thank you JB

Tweaked them both a little bit. You were right about the darker blue for the dark theme, and I gave the grey a little bit of a blue tint on the light theme to help differentiate it from the grey of the site background.
I got an error message a couple of hours ago saying the site had maxed out its bandwidth. Just an FYI. All seems fine again now obvs.

I got an error message a couple of hours ago saying the site had maxed out its bandwidth. Just an FYI. All seems fine again now obvs.
Yup. Here's a timeline of that issue:
A couple weeks ago, I checked our bandwidth and noticed that the usage was unusually high. I contacted tech support, and we did a couple minor things.
As month-end approached, I started getting warnings that we were reaching max bandwidth. I opened a ticket. Tech support (uncharacteristically) did not respond for a couple days.
Today, we reached our max bandwidth and tech support noticed my ticket. They helped us out: "As you may have noticed, the account simply stops working when the bandwidth is exceeded. I've given you a bit extra now so your site is back online."
They did more digging into our bandwidth usage and tightened up our firewall. More importantly, we identified three excessively scraping bots that are using 19% of our bandwidth. Yikes. So we're going to block them.
Of course if needed, we'll upgrade to a higher bandwidth. But filtering out the worst bots should be enough.
I figured you were on top of it. Since I'm one of the few typically on here early, thought it'd be worth mentioning. Thanks JB.
Access is restored now, but only because we rolled over into February. No response to my ticket yet. But I'm sure we'll get this ironed out.
Yeah, I got the warning ("BANDWIDTH EXCEEDED...") around 2:30pm Pacific Time today...
I have a decent grasp now on how to block these bandwidth-hogging bots — some (most?) of which are malicious, some of which are spiders/crawlers going overboard. Our host has a tool that shows # of files accessed and total file size downloaded by a certain IP. So I will keep an eye on that and block the obvious ones.
If for some strange reason you get blocked from the website, email me at xixaxfilmforum@gmail.com
Hey JB, in the new UI where do we click on a post to reveal its permalink?
Excellent question. I'm kind of sad about that, because as far as I can tell, there is no easy way to get the permalink anymore.
You can, however, get the URL by following this format:
http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=NUMBER.msgNUMBER#msgNUMBER
Mouse over the "report to moderator" flag to see the topic # and message #.
So using that method, I could create a link to my post higher up on this page:
http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=9379.555.msg356333#msg356333
Alternative method:
If I use the quote function, it goes to a new compose page and shows me this:
[quote author=Jeremy Blackman link=topic=9379.msg356333#msg356333 date=1548977276]
The important part is this:
topic=9379.msg356333#msg356333
So I could start with this code:
http://xixax.com/index.php?
And simply add the "important part" onto it:
http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=9379.msg356333#msg356333
Thankz!
Bandwidth update: looking good. We're now on track to use 33% of our bandwidth in a 30-day month.
This is long overdue, but... I made an edit so "8)" no longer turns into a smiley.
Now, when you need to swiftly create the sunglasses smiley (and don't we all sometimes), you'll need to use this code:
8-)
I thought of that the instant my last post with an "8)" turned into sunglasses dude... Thanks for the tweak.
8-)
Now I can finally start my math thread without accidentally look cool.
Sometimes I wish we could embed tweets here. Is it possible somehow, or do you guys not want that?
Good idea. I'll give that a try tomorrow.
Yay!!
Alright, I got the tweet mod working. All you have to do is paste the link to the tweet, and the forum will automatically turn that into code.
If you want to use a less elegant method, you can also copy the tweet ID and use code like this:
[tweet]1138795164401639424[/tweet]
https://twitter.com/ScottWamplerBMD/status/1138795164401639424
https://twitter.com/davidsirota/status/1138785662642118656
Looks like the Instagram mod works as well. It max-sizes the image, and it doesn't show comments, but I suppose that's okay.
Just like the Twitter mod, this one will automatically convert your plain link into an embed.
Alternatively, you can click the (https://xixax.com/Themes/SunRise20/images/bbc/instagram.gif) icon when composing a post, or use the tags:
[instagram]link[/instagram]
FYI, the auto conversion may leave extraneous code after the image, like "?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link" after the slash. This is harmless, but it's worth noting. So you can just delete that part of the url.
https://www.instagram.com/p/Br7zsiRB0-M/
I see the lack of instagram comments as a feature, not a bug.
Important FYI:
Our site has been under heavy attack this month by bots. Some are excessive crawlers, others are trying to deliver malicious php attacks. I've banned dozens and dozens of IPs and IP ranges just this month, which does help.
As a result, there's a CHANCE we'll exceed our bandwidth limit (at 80% now). If that happens, the site may be taken down until month's end. I submitted a ticket asking if I can be charged an extra month (or something) to keep the site up if that does happen. Worst case scenario, we'll have to upgrade to the more expensive plan to account for these waves of bot attacks.
Since I am regularly banning IPs, if you do by some horrible accident get blocked from the site, email me: xixaxfilmforum@gmail.com (forwards to my personal email).
Noted, thanks JB!
Outta curiosity -- noticed that the certificate is "not secure." Has it always been this way or is it due for a renewal? Might be a non-issue. My new gig leaves me with a lil pocket change so JB if there's ever a need for a telethon type donation weekend, do let us know cuz I'd be happy to contribute ~
Do you mean the "connection is not secure" message? That shows up because I haven't set up SSL yet, and Chrome now likes to warn you about websites that don't have SSL across the board. So yeah, that's on me. It requires some research to do right, so I've been a little hesitant, but it does need to be done.
The only "risk" is that messages you submit are not fully encrypted, so don't include your social security number in your review of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

Gotcha! Thanks for the constant maintenance of the board :yabbse-smiley:
There's a weird new shoutbox bug. Try to post more than 50 characters in one shoutbox message, and it will result in a blank message. To prevent these "ghost messages" I've imposed a 50-character limit, so now you'll be prompted to shorten your message.
This did not fix itself today, so I submitted a ticket to our host. Perhaps they can help. If not, I can try manually reinstalling the mod (overwriting the current code).
In any case, it'll probably be like this for a few days.
QuoteIt's actually more likely that some part of the code is not compatible with PHP 7.1.
PHP 5.6 has been EOL for a while, we kept it as default for a while to allow everyone to update.
A few days ago a new update bumped the default PHP version to 7.1. We did actually check all sites for problems, downgraded clients back to PHP 5.6 where applicable and sent them a warning email. We checked your site as well but it wasn't generating any errors, so you were kept on PHP 7.1.
However! PHP 5.6 is still available on the server. :)
In cPanel under the PHP manager you can select to go back to PHP 5.6. Please try that and see if it resolves your problem and let me know?
If it does resolve the problem: it's important that you fix the code to be compatible with PHP 7+ as 5.6 will be removed completely in the near future as it receives no security patches anymore. It's purely still there for legacy support, but due to the security implications it can't stick around for very much longer. :)
TLDR: The shoutbox is fixed for now, but we'll have to get an updated version fairly soon.
Looking at this, which is the pro version of what we currently have. They stopped updating the normal version 2 years ago, but this pro version is being supported:
https://www.smfpacks.com/shoutboxmod/
Looks spiffy! Thanks, JB n Polka ~
I will accept your thanks, even though I did literally nothing besides say "Hey, JB. Fix this."

Hmm, not that I'm aware of.
Whatever you did appears to have fixed it, at any rate.
I can't remember if I've brought this up with any of you other than Jeremy before.
I have constant formatting issues with this site. For example, if I hit ENTER twice to get a blank line and start a new paragrah, there will often be TWO lines in between paragraphs when I actually POST it. It looks fine in the WYSIWYG editor.
Thusly. (See first attached capture.) The only way to fix it is to toggle the view and manually go in and remove each extra line.
The other issue is I will often get a font size formatting tag inserted (unrequested)--and it's always size "2". If I don't check it, it will post that way--rendering that text unreadable. (I'm having trouble finding an example of that at the moment.)
I just tried posting this issue over in the simplemachine.org community, but got some 'tude about it.
Quoteno offense, but this site has nothing to do with any other sites ;) the site owner where you are having problems from would have to fix it
they probably just need to turn off the wysiwyg editor for most of the issues
as for the spacing issue, that was a modification that they did to stop people from doing multiple empty lines (you know how you see sometimes there's a line of text and then like 10 empty lines then another line of text), which they would, if they wanted to, have to edit it to allow double spacing
My memory is that Jeremy reports not seeing ANY of this behavior on his end. I tend to use Vivaldi as my main browser (or other chrome-based), but I've seen this on Firefox as well, I believe. And on multiple devices and OSs. Just curious if any of you have experienced anything similar.
I'll be honest, I've never seen any behavior like this myself. My first inclination is that the forum software doesn't play well with Vivaldi, but that doesn't explain why you've had issues with Firefox as well. Out of curiosity, let me try something:
Does the preceding show up for you as one blank line or two?
Alright, this is interesting. I think the root of the problem is the WYSIWYG editor. Hopefully you're not too reliant on it, because I think the solution for now would be to not use it.
I'm able to reproduce your exact issue in Chrome with the WYSIWYG editor. When I try the WYSIWYG editor in Firefox, I get the opposite issue—there are no spaces between lines.

Here's how it looked when it arrived.
Firefox has the opposite problem?
[edit] Ah, Jeremy pointed this out, yes. I guess for the moment I'll have to toggle off the WYSIWYG editor. That's not too difficult--except when I trying to embed links. I can never remember the sequence of tags.
I don't know. I'm baffled. I can't seem to reproduce a single one of these issues on my end.
Because I tend to use a lot of privacy and ad-blocking extensions, I just tried Firefox in "Safe" mode. Same result, so apparently those aren't the problem.
We're officially beyond my level of expertise.
Anybody else reading this, let us know if you have these or similar problems. Maybe with more data points we can zero in on the specific cause.
It's definitely just a bug in the WYSIWYG editor. If there's a documented way to fix it, I can take a crack at it. There is probably a specific source file to edit, if someone has figured out a fix. But to complicate matters, the bug might be specific to our new theme.

You can click the (https://xixax.com/Themes/SunRise20/images/bbc/url.gif) icon to get started. Then type an equals sign after the first "url" like this:
[url=][/url]
Then put the address after the =
Then put your text between the two tags.
[url=address]text[/url]
Is there an option to have the WYSIWYG toggled-off as default? Not a huge deal if not. I wonder if the 2-point font after pasting is related also. Hope you can narrow it down.

I went ahead and toggled off WYSIWYG-default in your profile. Looks like you should be able to change that and other options here:
http://xixax.com/index.php?action=profile;area=theme;u=8479
And it looks like new members have that toggled off by default. Yours must have got flipped on somehow.
I probably chose that option myself. How do you go about trying to debug whatever's going on? Or maybe it's not worth it. I'll use this option for awhile; see how it goes. :yabbse-thumbup:

I don't know enough of the code to tinker with it from scratch. If we can find that someone has come up with a fix, though, I can try implementing it.
I should have addressed this sooner. I guess the frantic posting this week really demonstrated how annoyingly fucked-up the WYSIWYG was.
Speaking of formatting, the little emoji guys have never opened properly for me. (attached) Just a narrow window to small to do anything with.
Could it all be theme-related?
Our host went down for basically half the day today. I think it was the longest downtime ever. They were under very heavy DDOS attack. We might be a little slow for a bit as they iron things out.
I made a backup page that I can use to post information when xixax.com is down. Bookmark it if you like:
https://xixax.weebly.com/
Here's more info about today's DDOS attack:
QuoteWe're working on that, it has been under DDoS-attack from a Chinese-based botnet since 5:30AM this morning. Whilst initially we had mitigated the attack and managed to keep it happy; around 11:15AM the attack amplified in strength and we couldn't react quick enough to save it from overloading, OOM-killer went on a killing spree and this caused some additional problems that we're currently manually thoroughly checking and where needed repairing before bringing the system back online and continue our battle with the droids. My apologies for any inconvenience.

Thanks, JB!
FYI, I may attempt to upgrade us to SSL (https) this week.
Technically it's already active and valid; you can access any of our URLs with https:// behind it. I just need to modify image URLs and such and set things up properly.
This is just a warning in case anything goes wonky (will make backups obviously).
I was just wondering if this was ever going to happen. Good job, sir.
Hell yesh JB ~ Much thankz :)
Done! It was a painless process until the very end, when I had to find one sneakily hidden filepath.
We're now 100% SSL.
This means any and all Xixax URLs will force-redirect to https. Our server is also letting search engines know we're doing this, so our ranking should increase.
The new setup also means any images on the site, past or current, are force-converted to SSL. If anyone embedded insecure http images in old posts, those images should now be reuploaded and hosted on our server. Browsers (especially Chrome) are very strict about this; you can't have one speck of http content on your page.
In any case, let me know if you see any broken images or anything that might have gone haywire. But it looks good from my end.
Bravo, sir! We appreciate you! :bravo:

Yes, we accept donations and I would appreciate that greatly!

DONE. Via friends and family 🤗
Very generous. Thank you!
I made a donation. Well over due. Count me in for a yearly donation to help keep this thing going.
Thank you!
Been a while. Good to see so many people active here. I was pretty shocked when I went into my profile and saw that I joined 18 years ago. That's a real number.
Hope everyone is doing well. And healthy. And vaccinated. Xixax forever.

can this live in News and Theory?
I'm open to an argument for it but I guess I don't really understand. The format of this board having individual threads for new releases seems to work well.
the context of Altered Innocence itself permits conversations that extend beyond dvd parameters, in fact dvd is an outmoded term as we all know, what I mean is that they reach beyond physical media
QuoteThis brings up the whole is it a [Brand] Movie or a Movie being released by [Brand]? A24 as a study in [Brand] eventually usurping authorship.
branding isn't a thing I'm into. Altered Innocence releases movies that I like but don't appeal to a large population. it was simply a way to collect together movies that interest me but won't individually foster large conversations
QuoteI still like the idea of authorship of a movie, that's me being old-fashioned, but I know if I made something I'd hope it could be framed as a thing apart from a continuous content release chain. The catalog stuff already had its day in the sun, came out on its own terms apart from the [Brand], so I figured dedicated threads in The Grapevine or This Year In Film for new releases, and catalog titles in a dedicated Altered Innocence thread as they're being highlighted (again).
it's not a framing device for the merits of the movie it's an organizational device on a movie forum. I had seen LA Plays Itself the night before and simply it wouldn't be relevant to DVD Talk at this time, was on my mind
QuoteThe benefits of curation by said [Brand] definitely come into play here and I'm all for that that's cool, but then if we're outsourcing curation to the [Brand] anyway why post?
It's not the curation I'm thinking about it's conversation. you post for conversation
QuoteClearly overthinking this but it does bug me. At the end of the day it's the internet and who cares. You do you, I'll do me.
there was a lot on your mind but it was cool, didn't bother me. I adjusted the title to find a way to satisfy both our perspectives without burning down the thread
We do need a new name for DVD Talk. Suggestions welcome!
As for the other stuff, I think it's subjective and don't have a strong opinion on it.
Quote from: jenkins on July 02, 2021, 05:38:44 PMIt's not the curation I'm thinking about it's conversation. you post for conversation
Right. This is the crux. I was being dumb in the way I described my perspective. We're disagreeing about how conversation happens here, I think.
I see the difference between Xixax and other sites being that this forum allows conversations to evolve across time, over years even, beyond the day or week of a post. We can go back to The Vault and find discussions on films that span decades - the threads are there and easy to follow even if people aren't discovering films at the same time (i.e. you saw
LA Plays Itself in theaters but for many access won't happen until the end of the year when there's a disc or streaming release).
That format also works as a discovery system for movies years after they pass out of vogue. You can run a search and go "
I've never heard of this movie, what are people here saying about it?" (as I have many times) vs. "
this movie has two posts about it in a thread about 30 movies. Nevermind." That seems to be a giant reason to post here, beyond the small community that keeps coming back. In fact, people keep returning I think because they can jump right back in due to the board's organization. If this site becomes as 24-hour time-dependent as other social media, jumping back into it becomes less possible.

While I understand your pov, these threads containing multiple trailers and posts for movies that don't have much to do with each other apart from their distributor don't make sense to me as bases for even small discussion, since conversation is unlikely to sustain beyond the day or week or month those posts happen. After three, four films are in the thread, if you want to respond or talk about one that was four films or posts back, there's endless quoting to make sense of which is being talked about and it generally becomes a roadblock to discussion about those films over time if people discover the thread or movie, later.
There's the Random DVD and Blu-Ray Announcements Thread, the Criterion Thread, I Just Bought... etc for new release announcements, which is what I thought you were doing with Altered Innocence.

I think we've come to understand the DVD subforum as a general Home Video or (new) catalog release forum. Part of the confusion here, too, is that while a minority of Altered Innocence repertory titles will play theatrically, like the one you saw, their ultimate destination, for the most part, is disc, streaming, or VOD.
I'm clearly guilty as hell for posting disc announcements that aren't necessarily fostering discussion in that multi-movie-thread format. My reason being that I discovered a lot of movies when I first came here circa 2002 or 2003 by seeing the titles samsong, Ghostboy, and godardian were posting about - it was the first time I became aware that many existed, and their highlighting them was a massive part of my initial film education. Trying to carry that torch and keep the titles visible after their announcements vanish from the daily news cycle - something that is probably wholly unnecessary now with the advent of databases like blu-ray.com and letterboxd's lists.

you're not being dumb, I'll tell you that. and I don't think we'll disagree much in the long haul. a stepping stone here is the relocation ascribed the thread to me in a place where I didn't feel I would put it, and when you think of the thread from your perspective it's not the same as when I think about the thread from my perspective, as we're witnessing

I also made the Dragon Dynasty thread, and I like going back there and remembering those days. I like how they're collected together, and what they represent. there are different kinds of conversations expressed in different ways I think. absolutely: single movies that can inspire grand conversation, we hope that happens, may they, though so often the most interesting movies are being overshadowed by the most popular, we two know this so well, wilder. Dragon Dynasty was physical media distribution, and criterion is physical media distribution. the corollary for each would be if there was a Miramax or Janus thread, I would expect those to be in News and Theory. when I imagine things

it's not only going to be the destination for many movies it's going to be the starting point. the whole world of VOD is flowering now. which applies to not just Altered Innocence movies but any movie with distribution rights

yeah, my LA Plays Itself post is in the adult movie thread. that's where it is. adult movies are kind of tricky to inspire conversation so an Altered Innocence thread was another means of organization. I wouldn't start a thread for it because it'll sit there alone and nonreplied rather than be among friends. which isn't the only way to look at things but it's a way I look at some things sometimes

Gotcha. I thought of Altered Innocence as a home video distributor first and foremost. But you're right they're just a distributor. Like Janus or Miramax. Janus put out
Revanche and also put out
The Rules of the Game. Miramax put out
Pulp Fiction but also The Three Colors Trilogy.

I see what you're saying. At the end of the day I'm being rigid and you're right this is about a community and a history of a community at a certain time and place more than a fucking reference guide. As anyone looking in would see, I don't have as much energy to talk about films anymore, and you're the one doing it, so whatever format that fosters that is the right one.

I love this description and fully agree. And I still don't understand why forums at large started discouraging posting in old threads. That makes sense for tech communities, where a thread's relevance expires, but obviously not for movies. That POV is so pervasive that our very own forum software warns you if you're posting in an inactive thread. Please, everyone, ignore that warning. "Necro"-ing threads is highly encouraged.

This is a very good point and something I struggle with at times. The "I've been watching" threads or the Horror thread are sometimes better for a less important thing that's unlikely to spawn much discussion. If I'm very passionate about a movie, I might start a new thread for it and ignore those concerns. It's a subjective judgement.
god if i started a thread for every movie i felt passionate about, well i think you can imagine the spread. i employ passionate casual conversations with my internet movie friends through a variety of methods, it's all important to me and some hit better than others
Writing about cinema iz itself a trip so analyzing the structure for the structure, layerz. I've been frequenting boards for two decades and discussing its gestalt in this moment when megaboards have mutated toward immediacy brings insight, knowing the time you've put into Xixax. Relationships with interfaces are complex and this was a neat snapshot.
Personally don't know if I had thought of The Vault that way much, like my mind would have jumped to "What Films Are We Watching?" cuz perhaps I thought the Vault was the trickle down from [previous year in film] in a compendium. Not sure - but the distinction against the endless scroll makes sense. And the synergy of each user's reading of the interface. Don't know what drives the distinction per new-thread, neat to consider, and those branches of thought also lead me to like, Real Life Soundtracks, which would probably benefit from a larger frequent user base since it's foremost a cinema/PTA board? Hmm.

Or
Shelves & the Websubtitle : "

idk I'll keep mulling it over in case there's a poll or however, this is like, all I can contribute beyond appreciation for both board and its peeps.
Going off the "Shelves & the Web" structure, although reversed, how about this?
Digital Streams & Polycarbonate Dreams
Or if that's too weird, perhaps a variation.
The site will probably be going down for emergency maintenance today. Got an email this morning: "The server you are currently being hosted on requires immediate replacement."
Sounds like things should be transferred automatically, but if there are any hiccups, the host's tech support has been excellent in the past. (Although if there is a problem, they may be swamped.) Fingers crossed.
One highlight from the email:
QuoteYou may experience downtime in all services (https, email, FTP, DNS, etc.) during the transfer process. We do our best to keep it to a minimum by employing advanced technologies such as having our servers proxy your data and requests between each other.
Due to the nature of this unexpected move/emergency maintenance, we're unfortunately unable to give you an exact timeframe - for which we offer our sincere apologies. However, we expect to move your account tonight.
Thank you for your understanding and we wish you a great day!
Looks like the transfer has been done. When I brought up xixax.com I was forwarded to a page telling me to reset my computer's DNS cache. Anyone else?
I'd rather not that be a requirement to access the site again, so I'll contact tech support, but they're not up and running yet.
On the plus side, the site definitely seems faster now.
Considering we rarely miss the water until the well runs dry, is there an established donation methodology to keep things running smoothly--or otherwise support the endeavor? There was a paypal link in another post, but that doesn't seem to be working any longer...

No, there is unfortunately no way around that.
This will usually update itself automatically after about an hour though (TTL), and usually without flushing the cache or rebooting, but some providers have rather aggressive caching; making it take longer.
Worst case scenario is usually +/- 24 hours, but fortunately that's very rare these days.

Strange. I was able to edit your post, and this one.
I enabled two new built-in systems:
- Likes
- Mentions
I love the Mentions system.
The Likes system seems innocuous enough, and maybe actually kind of useful? I recently said Likes might be good if they give you alerts (and you don't have to pathetically go back and look at your posts). Well, that seems to be the case.
Still, the Likes system can be on the chopping block if people feel it's too weird or toxic or whatever.
Configure alerts from the top menu! Otherwise you may get some unwanted emails.
Now to test out mentions on an unsuspecting victim...
@wilberfan
*startled awake from a nap*
"Mlmmfmgf... What the what...?!"
I can't say I was 'alerted' by the system. I actually read your post first, then had to go hunting for any kind of notification... So, it sorta worked... Shouldn't there be some kind of visual/auditory alert--rather than having to actually click on "Alert"?

The alert icon changes to show there are new alerts. Also, at least on my browser, it prompted me to enable desktop notifications. (I denied it.)
You could also go into your alert settings and have it email you for everything.
But yeah it's never going to be as good as Reddit or Discord notifications or native mobile notifications.
Woke up just now to an alert icon with a count. Very helpful. And the default theme seems to be working well on my phone... :yabbse-thumbup:
Our forum's email system has been borked for a while, but it looks like I've finally fixed it by changing 2 key settings. I successfully registered 2 test users today with email confirmation. Thanks
@WorldForgot for the help (and reminders).
Now we should test if thread reply notifications properly send emails.
A note for mods - new users still trigger the "account requires activation" alerts – but they don't require any manual activation. I can't seem to turn this off. Seems to be an SMF bug.
I tested email notifications, and they're working too!
Can confirm! I got 8 or 10 notifications of being quoted, etc, going back to late Feb of this year. :yabbse-thumbup:
