AAAHHH!  QUENTIN TARANTINO was the guest judge tonight!  And he was damn good.

I admit that I adore this show (don't know if anyone else does)... and Fantasia made me cry tonight.  Unbefuckinglieviable.

I like the show, if only because of the few performances that really can blow your mind.  Tonight's show was alright.  Didn't pay too much attention, but QT's honesty was the highlight, and all the black girls (Jennifer, Latoya, Fantasia) really did great.  George Huff had an off week, but he may pull it off.  I so wish the two Johns would get gone -- they really are painful to watch.  I like Jasmine Trias.  She's cute, and has a great voice, but she's too young, just like Simon said.  Still, I'm hoping she sticks around for awhile.

I like hearing Simon's comments the most, because they're usually the most honest and basically right on.  Randy gets on my nerves because he can't seem to find another word to describe a "bad performance" besides pitchy.  He's singlehandedly made me hate that word.  And Paula can't criticize anyone for the life of her.  So yeah, Simon is the star for a reason.

Sidenote: it was depressing to see these contestants' choices for favorite movie, but at least Finding Nemo got two props.  Too bad the only old movies (that I remember) were Sister Act 2 and The Wiz.  Other than that, their memory doesn't go past 1990.

I tried to watch the show once. Turned it off after 20 minutes because it took so long to get from performance to performance. The interviews were extended and every 5 seconds it felt like commercials were popping up. It was like watching ECW wrestling or a video store rented porno.  And then, the utter disbelief I actually didn't like the fucking performances! Even with the hype, I knew it would not change my mind on happy pill pop music. I like Simon, but he's everywhere right now so I don't even need to watch the show to get to see his jokes.

They always say the same thing:

Randy: Waddup Dogg? Yo baby, I dug your performance, it was a little shaky at first, but you came through.

Paula: You are exactaly where you want to be. Great Job.

Simon: That was the worst performance of this competition.

though i dont like the show, i did watch QT and dug it. but i dont think i'll be watching it again.

When he sang "Jailhouse Rock" I had to turn the station.  It was so awful.  I can't believe the judges ate it up!  Thank goodness he was kicked off. I wasn't that impressed with QT's critiques, but at least he wasn't all "Great job!" like most of the celebrity guest judges.

I must be the only one who thinks these people are nothing new? I've only caught the show a few times but I just think they are mediocre at best. I mean yeah some have definite talent to sing. However, it just goes to show America loves a pre-packaged singer and nothing genuine. Where are the next alcoholic, heroin shooting  idols of the past? Dammit!

Elton John calls 'Idol' voting racist
From Reuters

British rock star Elton John, a guest judge this month on the Fox network's "American Idol," said Tuesday that he found the voting by the national viewing audience "incredibly racist."

John added his voice to a chorus of dissent that followed last week's exit of black vocalist Jennifer Hudson, considered one of the top talents among those vying for a recording contract.

"The three people I was really impressed with, and they just happened to be black, young female singers, and they all seem to be landing in the bottom three," said John, commenting on the tally in which the lowest vote-getter is eliminated.

"They have great voices. The fact that they're constantly in the bottom three — and I don't want to set myself up here — but I find it incredibly racist," John said at a New York news conference promoting his Radio City Music Hall concert.

Fox declined to comment.

They landed in the bottom three because they probably split the vote among the black demographic.  The black demographic, incidentally, is the largest that watches the show.  There was just too much quality in that group.  Four great black artists on that show.  Incidentally, one may consider it racist to vote for someone based on the color of their skin.  Elton is way off here.

Jon Stevens finally got the boot.  Felt bad for the kid, but his voice just has no character.  It just kind of floats there, has no range, and is just flat in songs where it's supposed to have emotion.  I'm pulling for Diana Degarmo at this point.  Her performance last night killed.  But people seem to have selective amnesia about these things.  George Huff was killing just a few weeks ago.  Jasmine Trias is still cute and extremely talented as always, but her age gets in the way.

do u know what "incidentally" means? the talented singers just happen to be black. even if it's true that only the black ppl vote for "their kind", elton's comment still applies. not that it's anything new, american idol is racist, stupid, and just about the worst fad to come out of that place in recent years.

It means "by the way," or "as a side note," among other things.

By the way, one may consider it racist to vote for someone based on the color of their skin.  And it is, if that's what they were doing.  No one can prove that, though.

Quote from: Pubrickthe talented singers just happen to be black.
That's just what I said.  The vote split.  And Elton's comment still doesn't apply.  He's implying that there are some racist cogs spinning in the background at FOX, when that really isn't true, no matter how "conservative" the network may be.  Consider past results, is all.

i don't see any implications of that in the article posted. from what i understood, elton was saying the same thing as u: that the public is voting racially. that's where "incidentally" was redundant, cos u were just repeating what elton was saying.

i don't see where FOX is blamed for this, they aren't the ones voting.

In order for the voting to be considered racist, we would have to assume the voting is done purely on talent, which of course, we know it isn't.

I actually don't think any of the contestants are anything original. Some of them have very good vocal skills however.  I wish they would consider letting bands or people that play instruments on. I mean Elvis and the Beatles were American Idols.  Anyway, I think the John Stevens chap was at least different than what you hear on radio nowadays.

- the beatles weren't american.
- elvis was hardly an instrumentalist

Here's to hoping Diana wins.
Title: American Idol
Post by: ono on May 26, 2004, 02:31:53 PM
I hope she (Diana) wins, too, but it doesn't look good.  I missed the beginning performances, but the last two weren't amazing.  I did think Diana did a good job with hers.  Sometimes, Fantasia has been nothing special and I see Paula all in tears and Randy whipping his fist and saying "yeah, dawg!" and I wonder if we're hearing the same show they are.  Plus, Fantasia needed a whole choir behind her to get the response she did.  Fantasia will sell records, though.  She has that image, and that Aretha aura about her.  But I just like Diana better.  Fantasia's voice is just a bit too nasal.

I do wonder though how long the show will be a success.  I didn't watch the first season, caught the second midway through.  Ruben won, of course, but he hasn't been heard from nearly as much, mainly because his style of music isn't as mainstream as Clay's.  Anyone who doesn't acknowledge Aiken's amazing voice simply doesn't know talent.  This time around though, not many people had that, and I think it will probably be a while before they find someone as good as Clay again.  And I don't know if they have here.  It'll probably be a while before we can know for sure -- when the winner releases her first album.

Post by: A World Apart on May 26, 2004, 03:36:09 PM
I personally can't stand Fantasia. Her voice is like hearing a cat die! She has talent yes, an enthuisastic persona yes...but she bugs the hell out of me. And, since people love her just so much she has no problem getting a contract, she doesn't need to win. Diana will have a contract too, but i think she is completely underrated by people cuz of her age...her voice is incredible!....i think this last episode, as with the case of the past seasons, isn't really a competition as it is just a show for us, the audience. The first season produced Kelly Clarkson...who?..where is she?..and Justin Guarini (sp?) is no where..and their movie flopped, of course. The second season produced..as stated before..Ruuuubeennnn  Studdaarrrddd. Awesome voice, but yea..not in main stream music. And then there is Clay, i totally agree that he is amazing. His voice is heavenly. This season didn't have a good line up at all...i actually think that woman with the pinkish hair had a better voice than them all...that's my two cents.

From this website.. (http://assistantatlas.blogspot.com/2005/04/poop-on-ryan-seacrests-star-contest.html)

The "Poop on Ryan Seacrest's Star" Contest!!!

If you're looking for the Executive of the Week post-- sorry. The Executive of the Week will henceforth be announced on Mondays, because I have decided that that is the official beginning of the work week. But Friday is a good day to start this contest.

Yes, that's right, folks. You read that title correctly.

Assistant/Atlas is running a contest to right the cosmic wrong that is Ryan Seacrest's star on the sidewalks of Hollywood. The first person to capture a photograph of the aforementioned event will receive the proceeds of my first check from GoogleAds, if I can get rid of my PSAs and make it to the $50 mark to get the check. Of course, this post essentially dooms me to weeks, if not a lifetime of PSAs for being 'offensive' and not 'family-safe' or whatever.

Now, please review the eligibility requirements and other materials to enter.

In Order to Enter This Contest:
1) You must be over 21, because you'll probably need to be good and drunk in order to think this is a good idea.
2) You must be personally offended by the snowjob that is Ryan Seacrest's star.
3) You must have a sense of humor that would be considered above average as well as a strong constitution-- there is no crying in the "Poop on Ryan Seacrest's Star" Contest.

What You Need to Enter:
1) You, and probably a getaway driver
2) Feces, preferably runny, inside you or a plastic bag
3) A camera

To Win:
You must actually take two pictures as proof. The first should be close on the star-- with Ryan Seacrest's name at least mostly visible-- after the business has been done. The second should be one of you doing the dirty deed, whether it be you squatting or just of you dumping a bag of business. It is acceptable to not show your face or to wear a ski mask during the deed to both avoid prosecution and the inevitable embarrassment of winning. Although, if you're willing to do the deed on a sidewalk in Hollywood, then maybe you're a publicity hound. And that's okay, too.

Please note: Getting a homeless person to do his business on the star will not be accepted! Remember, this is cosmic justice, people. You must be so personally offended by Ryan Seacrest's star that you are going to defile it yourself.

To Assuage Your Worries:

I, Assistant Atlas, promise that I will not show other people, post on the Internet or in any way release, anything but the winning pictures. And for the sick-minded of you out there, please note that I am NOT doing this to satisfy a bizarro people-pooping fetish. I assure that I am much more likely to burn any pictures I receive than to pleasure myself in any way while looking at them.

Please email assistantatlas@yahoo.com for picture-sending instructions. Thank you. . . and good luck!

I've seen a few of this season's episodes, and so far the highlight has been, without a doubt, BOBBY BENNETT.

Paula actually suggested a career in comedy for this guy. Each facial expression, eye glance and body movement was amazing, the way he repeatedly compared himself to Barry Manilow ("like Barry himself!") and pointed at Paula when she praised him with that winky "you know I love ya, girl" look in his eyes! This man is GOLD.  JUST LOOK AT HIM:

Sigh.... invalidated.  Hate to do it to you, but that's serious invalidation right there.

But don't fret; here's mine.  I like Kevin Covais.  I like the dude quite a bit.  The song he did tonight was exactly the sort of style he should be doing.  You could put him in front of a Maroon 5 type of band and he would be awesome.

edit: HIDEOUS dress, Katherine.

I will fight you.

But seriously, it's funny how a couple of weeks ago there were rumors on the internets that she was pregnant, and then that's the dress she wears right after that.  On the plus side, it accentuated her... um... how to phrase this delicately... her bodacious bosoms.

Final two will be Chris and Katherine.  That's money in the bank.

Kevin's the dude with the glasses?  Cause if that's the case, then we're clearly not watching the same American Idol.  But I must say, I seem to be a sucker for the black guys on the show.  I loved Niko (sp?) last year and George Huff the year before.    Oh, and is it me or did Gideon seem wayyyyyyyyyyy older than 17.  That dude looked 30.

i'm disappointed chris went home, relieved katherine didn't. but still, what the hell.

i think chris's major flaw in the eyes of the voters was that he didn't ham it up. other than that, his singing was better than yamin and hicks combined. (yamin and hicks combined is a disturbing thought.)

The thing about Chris is that his voice is like everything I've ever heard.  Yeah, technically he's very good but there's nothing interesting about him.  And I hate his taste in music!  Creed, ugh.  The kind of record he would make would be so odd, as opposed to someone like Yamin who could make a classic Stevie Wonder type album filled with chamberlains and vibes and all that good stuff.   At this point its more about whose album I can picture enjoying more, although truth be told I'm probably not gonna buy it anyways.   What don't you like about Elliot?

Goddamn, though, I'm in love with Katherine McPhee.   Gorgeous.  And how priceless was Chris's face when he found he lost?  I thought he was going to punch Seacrest or something for breaking it to him the way he did.

WTF?!!?!?

Wow.  I did not expect that.  Don't get me wrong, I like both Elliot and Taylor (especially Elliot), but Chris was destined to win this season.

The plus side of this: maybe when Chris gets to make his album, he'll be able to choose better songs than the half-baked treacle they usually give to the winners.

i agree that Elliott actually has the best singing voice.
i can think of instances when all of the other 3 have sung something that was not in their range, but can't remember one where Elliott didn't.

i don't know why, but i have this weird feeling that McPhee will do a little acting (tv shows, bit parts), but not become a big star. then when funds are low she will do a straight to cable soft core movie.

fair enough i guess, except i think yamin lacks the main ingredient of a 'stevie wonder type album'-- soulfulness. he knows how to hit notes nicely, i'm not doubtin his vocal abilities, but his performances suffered from a shortage of heart and charisma. taylor's the worst, though. it's embarassing he hasn't been voted off yet. the gimmick of a goofy gray haired nutcase spazzing out onstage got old fast, and like yamin, the dude knows how to control his voice, but the voice itself just doesn't make the cut.

i wouldn't buy download any of their albums, except for katherine's. and i'll download the album cover artwork and save it in my special "katherine" file under My Pictures. i'm serious. [/stalker]

This is all true but the sad thing is he's got no less soul, heart, and charisma than any of his would be contemporaries.  He could make a nice living singing Disney movie theme songs.

That's fair to say but the whole show is based around that very concept.  I doubt that many people vote for the best performance on a show by show basis.  They either vote their favorite or vote what Simon says.  If people really cared who was the most talented over who's the cutest/funniest/etc., Bucky would have been the first to go.  But some people liked his dashing backwoods inbred good looks and kept him in for a while.

If the votes were based on pure singing talent, Mendisa and Katherine would be the final 2 with Mendisa winning.  So if America is already voting for who they find most attractive or any other factors, then why complain about Taylor over anyone else?  He's just playing the game.

haha good point, i shouldn't single out taylor. for the sake of fairness:
- bucky was the cure for insomnia.
- ace was.. who WAS ace? oh right, the smiley guy. mr toothy. unforgettably forgettable.
- kellie was an idiot, even andrea bocelli knew she was blond. she was kinda cute in a pitiful sorta way, but her singing was a bore/screech.
- the gimmick of paris bennett's young age outweighed the quality of voice (she was good though).
- kevin was a pompous spawn of satan.

all are condemned! except kat, because she's kat.

even though i've watched the last 3 seasons, i've never had the desire to actual buy any of the albums, but i might have bought an Eliott album. i could see it being a 70's soul record with Rhodes and Hammond B-3, etc.

you know katherine's will be a manufactured pop covers record with hot pictures in the booklet.

not sure about taylor. i could see it either being cheesy adult contemporary or maybe pretty good. it seems he does actually write music. no idea. with AI behind it, it will probaby cheesy adult cont. or Michael McDonald-y.

Taylor actually has a personality and writes music and likes actual music instead of formulaic boolshit... the only reason he even entered the contest was to promote his band.... because he has a BAND... he's not just fucking solo face like the rest of these morons.

Katherine is so incredibly boring and obvious and void of anything that could possible make her different than the rest of the boring, obvious pop stars on the radio today.  This is why she will probably win.

I'm not saying that I would buy Taylor's album or anything... I'm just saying I'm glad he made it as far as he did because it shows that some of the idiots that actually vote on that show actually appreciate talent over tits.

did anyone see Wayne Coyne (flaming lips) point a wand at Taylor while they were performing on Leno? haha

Taylor will go multiple times platinum most likely. here's the key: does the song have cross over potential? will it fit with the pop charts and the adult contemp charts (the same radio stations that play celion deon, michael mcdonald, etc)? if so, it will be huge.

what really surprises me is that these people sell all these albums and then you don't hear from them a while. i don't know if Idol doesn't want them to compete with the new coming out or what. if you sell 4 million with one record, surely it won't be too hard to at least sell half that with a decent song and a little promotion.

Hicks tops People's 'hot bachelor' list

NEW YORK - "American Idol" Taylor Hicks is ranked as the No. 1 "hottest bachelor" by People magazine — and he's looking for love.

The 29-year-old silver-haired crooner tops People's list in the magazine's new issue, on newsstands Friday. But the "Idol" winner says he'd happily give up his bachelor days.

"There's been no time," Hicks says of his dating life. "Now, I wouldn't mind spending the rest of my life with the right woman."

Hicks also wants to find a woman he exchanged glances with on a recent airline flight. Of the mystery blonde, he says, "We waved and did a double-take look. It seemed like something out of a movie."

The magazine has set up e-mail and mailing addresses for the mystery woman to contact Hicks. The singer will also perform the song "Possibilities" in a new commercial for the Ford Motor Co., it was announced Wednesday.

Other "hot" bachelors — who aren't ranked by the magazine — are several celebrities no longer involved in high-profile romances, including
Matthew McConaughey (ex-boyfriend of Penelope Cruz), Nick Lachey (formerly married to Jessica Simpson), Jake Gyllenhaal (who dated Kirsten Dunst) and Kenny Chesney (briefly married to Renee Zellweger).

The list also includes Ryan Seacrest, Jamie Foxx, Owen Wilson and Wentworth Miller.

McPhee: "Idol" Saved My Life

After landing a slot on American Idol, Katharine McPhee decided it was time to take control of her destiny.

In a new interview with People magazine, the fifth season runner-up reveals that she struggled with severe bulimia for five years, bingeing and purging in a destructive cycle that could have permanently ruined her singing voice and caused devastating consequences to her health.

At her worst, McPhee says she was making herself vomit up to seven times each day, which she equates to "putting a sledgehammer to your vocal cords."

But all that changed once the 22-year-old aspiring singer got the go-ahead from the Idol judges, and realized that in order to succeed on the talent search, she would need to rein in her eating disorder.

"When I made it onto American Idol, I knew that food--my eating disorder--was the one thing really holding me back," McPhee tells People. "I was bingeing my whole life away for days at a time...So when I got on the show, I said, 'You know what? I can do well in this competition. Let me give myself a chance and just get ahold of this thing.' "

Backed up by her parents, frequent Idol audience members Peisha and Daniel McPhee, the Idol hopeful enrolled in an intensive treatment program at Los Angeles's Eating Disorder Center of California, where she underwent three months of group and individual therapy, spending 10 hours a day, six days a week at the center.

"I really had to surrender and give up having a free life to do the program, because I'd be there from 9 in the morning until 7 at night," McPhee says. But she knew the sacrifice was necessary if she wanted to get well.

"I knew I had put off going to a treatment center long enough--I'd been struggling with bulimia since I was 17," she says.

McPhee attributes some of her problems with food to growing up in a city where tremendous emphasis is placed on celebrity-slim bodies.

"Growing up in Los Angeles and spending all those years in dance class, I'd been conscious of body image at a young age, and I went through phases of exercising compulsively and starving myself," she says.

By using the intuitive eating approach she learned at the Eating Disorder Center, McPhee was eventually able to redefine her relationship to food.

"I learned that there's no such thing as a bad food," she says. "If you look at a doughnut, people think it's a fattening food--why? Because if you eat it you'll get fat? No, you'll get fat if you eat 10 doughnuts."

As a result, she dropped 30 pounds and broke her cycle of bingeing and purging.

"That's why I say American Idol saved my life, because if I hadn't auditioned I don't think I would have gotten a handle on food," she tells the magazine.

By openly talking about her eating disorder, McPhee stands to help fans who may be struggling with similar issues, according to Dr. Thomas Weigel, a psychiatrist at the Klarman Eating Disorders Center at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts.

"Katharine's portrayal of her eating disorder and its effects on her life would tend toward helping people suffering with eating disorders to seek out treatment," Weigel said.

"She had a problem, which was affecting her career, and she went through a difficult treatment program to make progress toward recovery. It was hard work, but she fought against the eating disorder to get her life back."

And what a life it is. After the Idol finale, McPhee went on to sign a record deal with RCA Records in conjunction with 19 Recordings Limited.

Her first single, "My Destiny," coupled with "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," is scheduled for release on Tuesday. As of Thursday, the tracks were ranked number 52 in music by Amazon.com.

Though the Idol competition is officially over, McPhee's still got her work cut out for her if she hopes to catch up to Taylor Hicks, who released his first single last week and instantly rocketed to the top of the charts.

'Idol' singer Clay Aiken may serve Bush

RALEIGH, N.C. -
Clay Aiken is in line to be named to the President's Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities, the White House said Wednesday.

Aiken, a Raleigh native who gained fame as a runner-up on "American Idol," once worked as a YMCA counselor.

The committee's Web site said it advises the president on issues pertaining to people with intellectual disabilities. The committee was established in 1961 by President John Kennedy as the President's Panel on Mental Retardation.

A White House press release said President Bush intends to make the appointment. Officials did not say when.

The singer's new album, "A Thousand Different Ways," is due out later this month.

Indie calls McPhee for feature bow
Source: Hollywood Reporter

"American Idol" runner-up Katharine McPhee is set to make her feature film debut as the star of the indie dark romantic comedy "The Last Caller."

Penned by Michael Albanese, the story is described as a coming-of-age tale about a self-obsessed woman (McPhee) who searches for love, hope and meaning during a few random events with other urban seekers.

"Caller" is produced by Hit and Run Prods.' Hilary Shor ("Children of Men") and Zenith Film Group's Nicholas Cokas. Robert Hawk ("Chasing Amy") will serve as associate producer. The film's budget will fall in the $5 million-$8 million range, and shooting is scheduled to start in the fall in and around New York.

"This is the first thing that I read that I really wanted to do," said McPhee, who added that the role doesn't involve singing. "I'm up for a couple of big studio projects, but they weren't starring roles. I wanted to start off doing something a little different. It's something that a lot of people wouldn't expect me doing."

In fact, the Southern California native said the film's protagonist "is definitely a little darker than me."

McPhee, who was edged out by Taylor Hicks as winner of the fifth season of "American Idol," made her self-titled album debut for RCA/19 Recordings, which landed at No. 2 on the Billboard chart. Her first single, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/My Destiny," debuted at No. 2 on Billboard's Hot Singles Sales chart.

Is anyone watching American Idol this season?

I hadn't watched it at all until some of last season, so I really don't have much perspective. But I can say I've already seen enough contestants this season who could easily replace the entire top 12 from last year. Huge difference. I only liked one of the finalists from last season, but it could be much different this time.

I'm really not sure why I'm fascinated with the show. There's the obvious weirdness you get to see during the auditions. There's a certain suspense and sports-like quality to the "main event" part of the season, especially if you have a favorite. But right now I'm enjoying the elimination rounds most of all. There's a kind of epic justice (and probably schadenfreude) in seeing bad singers' dreams being crushed. There's also a thrill in being surprised by the few who do stand out among the field of melisma-drowned impersonators.

I watch most of it, though Thursdays I already watch about 3 or 4 other shows.

I missed Jacqueline Dunford bowing out. She would have been nice eye candy.

Surprised at how well the new judges are working out. I thought Simon leaving would have been a disaster and a show ender.

Of course, so far we have seen taped and edited shows, so it will be interesting to see how the judges handle it live.

Big mistake not putting this guy through. Here's (a brief piece of) his performance of one of the better Paramore songs:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dovOzRMSQ7o#t=2m32s

My favorites are Casey Abrams, James Durbin, and Jacob Lusk.

Not sure why I felt the need to do this, but here's my top 12 prediction:

Casey Abrams
Clint Jun Gamboa
Jacob Lusk
James Durbin
Jordan Dorsey
Julie Zorrilla
Lauren Alaina
Robbie Rosen
Scotty McCreery
Stefano Lagone
Thia Megia
Tim Halperin

Some thoughts on the judges...

I honestly didn't know whether I would watch this season, with the lack of Simon, and when it became clear there was no Simon replacement. However, I actually really like the current judge lineup. (I'll explain.) When you think about it, this really subverts the way Idol has operated in the past. You don't have a hack producer with dollar signs in his eyes (Simon) or a hack songwriter (Kara) constantly worried about how "commercial" the contestants are. And as a consequence, you don't have contestants promising to make them rich (how sad was that last season?), and you probably attract more legitimate auditions. Side note—I think I almost clawed my eyes out last season when Kara used the word "commercial" as a compliment for the 14th time.

The judging last season was all over the place. Each time Simon or Kara would be confused by the slightest expression of individuality in a performance, their lack of credibility became more and more astonishing. It's no wonder I always agreed with Randy. (I'll give Ellen a pass here, because she was usually right, if not articulate.) Now, for the very first time in the show's history, all the judges are legitimate musicians. This is why they're on the same page most of the time. I wonder how much disagreement we'll see in the main event—my guess is not much.

The show is becoming less about quips from the judges, and more about the actual music.

Overall, the contestants are so much better than last season. Just in the first audition episodes, I had already seen enough singers who could pretty much replace Season 9's entire top 12. Last season, I complained that Siobhan Magnus had to share a stage with talentless imitators like Lacey Brown, Tim Urban, and most of the other finalists. This season, these people can actually sing.

I definitely appreciate that they've gone light on the sob stories, but there's one production gimmick that's starting to get to me. The pre-commercial teasers will often say something like "But someone will be going home!" And then they show the face of someone who's NOT going home. The person is in tears, yes, but we later find out they're tears of joy. They did this about 7 times in the latest episode. One of them showed Casey Abrams knocking over his chair, in a way that you couldn't tell whether he was happy or upset, with an ominous voiceover. (Of course, he made it through and knocked over the chair in excitement.) It's not that the device necessarily bothers me; it's that it's become so predictable that it spoils the results. If they say something like "Someone's dream is coming to an end!" and show a contestant surprised or crying, you can be sure that person's dream is NOT in fact coming to an end.

I gave up this show partway through last season, right after Lilly Scott got booted, and hadn't watched any of this season, but I checked out the top 24 to see if there was any good talent this year to make it worth watching.  Long story short, I'm going to be Youtubing the Paul McDonald and Casey Abrams performances and calling it good.  Jacob Lusk is clearly talented beyond measure, but just doesn't interest me musically.  The girls, to a man (pardon the expression), bored me to tears.  The only one who did anything close to interesting was the girl who butchered the Fiona Apple song, but at least she was trying something.  Of course, she didn't make the cut, so that's that.  I might be convinced to watch some of Pia Toscano's performances with the sound low...

(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi35.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fd179%2Fpolkablues%2FPiaToscano-01-big.jpg&hash=d155ee832b572e8c957e30bec3aef87df693fb67)

But seriously, Paul McDonald (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLQXCYkisVM).  Dude!  I want this guy's album already.

I'm with you, Polka.

But last year was the first year I watched American Idol, so I guess in relative terms, I'm fairly happy with this season. Song choice does need to get better (much better), but it could be a good season.

I did like Lily Scott. She actually tells a funny story about how the band leader and the producers kept mispronouncing Moog, and when she politely corrected them, they told her she was wrong.

I was a fan of Siobhan Magnus last season. I'll try to remember to post links to my favorite performances of hers. She had a few great ones.

This season, it's Casey Abrams all the way, followed by James Durbin, then Jacob Lusk. The rest I could do without, (and you're right) especially the girls (with the possible exception of Thia Megia). Nearly all of them are simply impersonators, which unfortunately is rampant on Idol.

That's partly what bothered me about Paul McDonald's "Maggie May" performance, actually. I won't deny that he's skilled, but again, it was a little too much impersonation for me. I'm definitely open to liking him, though.

I thought Rachel Zevita's performance of "Criminal" was interesting at first, but ultimately horrible. The arrangement and her vocals destroyed the song in every way imaginable. She was trying too hard. Also potentially pandering with the sexy walk stuff, which she was obviously uncomfortable doing. It's a shame... she could have been good (maybe).

I don't really get that.  He has a wildly different voice than Rod Stewart, and while he didn't mix up the arrangement or anything like that, it was the performance of a musician, not of a karaoke performer.

That's awesome.  I love her even more now.  I actually bought her band Varlet's album on iTunes, and it's pretty good.  Her songwriting could use some refining, but I love the tone of voice and her phrasing.

Also, is it just me, or was this really freaking special? The best part is after 0:50. Love the control he has over his voice. But most of all, this was totally authentic, and few Idol performances are. I must have underrated Stefano before, because this is crazy...

That was a much better song for him than the Bruno Mars song.  His voice is way too similar to Bruno Mars' (in terms of tone, not of range or ability) to be doing Bruno Mars covers on the show.

You're right. I nearly hated his other performances, so I was really surprised to be moved by the one I linked. He has so much potential and could be one of my favorites. (Song choice, as always, is huge.) And I feel like I can't repeat it enough... In that performance, he has something that so few Idol contestants have: authenticity.

Which brings me to Siobhan Magnus.

Her later performances on Idol were sometimes rocky and sometimes unsuccessful experiments (apparently she wanted to try songs that were wrong for her), but in the early and mid season, she had some great ones. My favorites:

1. Wicked Game (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fhe18DQmpL0)
The second half gives me chills. This is where she really distinguishes herself from the other contestants, with her sincere emotion and perfect expressiveness.

2. Living For The City (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXyLO2-Ekgg&feature=PlayList&p=F85CC15B4895F2DD&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=2)
Her voice is at its full strength here. Completely fearless and unrestrained.

3. House Of The Rising Sun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqZ1xQ9fHXk)
More subtlety, vocal strength, and technical prowess. The transition at 0:24 gives me chills. She also sang it on Ellen here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRfBPwSyirQ#t=2m2s). It's better than the AI version.

4. Think (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6w8mmdPm9I#t=2m)
This is generally considered her most memorable performance, when she first hit the big glory note. A little frantic and impersonating, but it's pretty good. The judges' reactions are also worth seeing.

5. Paint It Black (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkjZG10QAms#t=1m21s)
Siobhan at her most dramatic. Also her last worthy performance.

Okay, so Paul is still my favorite, and I like him even more for bringing Ryan Adams to the world's attention, but the poor guy butchered "Come Pick Me Up".  Totally out of key in the verses, awkward censoring of the swear words in the chorus, and the producer who told him to resolve the melody on the last line was an idiot.  I'm glad he made it through still; I want to see how he recovers.

I thought it was pretty bad, too. His movements on stage are best described as 'drunk Chris Martin.'
Pretty interesting how that one actress at the Red Riding Hood premiere seemed to have a crush on him and he's barely been on TV. Paste said that he has been featured on one of their compilations with his band in the past.

Black Eyed Peas performed last week (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGgsItRAWLc).

I loved will.i.am's helmet, but the rest of it just gave me a headache.

1. Fergie confuses me. What is her purpose?

2. Taboo was embarrassing. What's the point of autotuning his rap? It just sounds stupid. Almost as bad as Lil Wayne. (Yes, I said it.)

I guess I'm in a negative mood today.

I haven't really been following at all, not really my thing, but the wife loves it. Did catch a couple of them last night though, and was blown away by the final girl who did Benny And The Jets. I was rolling my eyes when I saw her and heard the song choice, thinking oh she doesn't know who Elton is, she just heard that song in that bridesmaid movie. But wow, definitely the best performance of the night (from what I saw in the montage recap at least). If she's still there when it gets down to the final 6 or 5 I might start making an effort to watch.

Edit: What is up with that dude channeling gay Tracy Morgan?

Agree about the final performance. Haley can be great. (I think I linked another performance of hers here.)

I always appreciate a unique vocalist who can also bring heart/soul/sincerity to their performances. It's rare in popular music and particularly on Idol. That's why Casey remains my favorite. It's also why I'm no longer rooting for James Durbin. (He's getting too showy for me.)

As far as Jacob Lusk is concerned (the gay Tracy Morgan you're talking about), he's kind of a one trick pony, as they say, and he's not really one of my favorites, but I still appreciate his depth.

Oh, I also meant to say, Polka, I think I finally understand Paul McDonald, with that Rocket Man performance. I didn't necessarily like it, but it does still show where he's most comfortable. I'm not sure Idol is the best place for him... His voice is so specific that he's probably best off singing his own songs.

I still think Colton Dixon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHD_SVI5Q5M#t=31s) (who didn't even make the top 24) could replace 1 or 2 of the current contestants, for his crazy-eyed intensity if nothing else.
