I voted, but as I have posted before I saw about 5 really good 2003 films right after I submitted my votes.

At the end of all this, I like to see the pissey attitudes all around (me included). At least it means we care about film.

That being said, no fucking Elephant noms SUCKS!!!! :)
Those who say that the totalitarian state of the Soviet Union was not "real" Marxism also cannot admit that one simple feature of Marxism makes totalitarianism necessary:  the rejection of civil society. Since civil society is the sphere of private activity, its abolition and replacement by political society means that nothing private remains. That is already the essence of totalitarianism; and the moralistic practice of the trendy Left, which regards everything as political and sometimes reveals its hostility to free speech, does nothing to contradict this implication.

When those who hated capital and consumption (and Jews) in the 20th century murdered some hundred million people, and the poster children for the struggle against international capitalism and America are now fanatical Islamic terrorists, this puts recent enthusiasts in an awkward position. Most of them are too dense and shameless to appreciate it, and far too many are taken in by the moralistic and paternalistic rhetoric of the Left.

Quote from: SoNowThenbetter than 21 Grams and LIT (and didn't take itself so seriously).

If Kill Bill wins over Lost in Translation for writing, something is SERIOUSLY wrong with the moviegoers around here.

It's going to be my personal crusade to try and make that happen.

Ugh. No thank you. There's such thing as a little *too* much praise for a film. Kill Bill is a great movie but nobody in their right mind would put that SCREENPLAY higher than, say, Lost in Translation.

Am I the only one here who, the more and more he thinks about it, thinks that Tarantino is a one, maybe two-hit wonder at best?  I mean, Pulp Fiction was great and all, but the comedic violence angle can only be effective so many times.  Maybe I'm just jaded, I don't know.  Where else can Tarantino go from here?  Jackie Brown showed promise, but if anything, he hasn't shown he wants to improve, but to cash in on his own marketability after "paying his dues."

This list isn't so bad, in my opinion. I aldo haven't seen many of the lesser-known films like Thirteen, Whale Rider, Station Agent, etc. Jacksonville sucks. I hope Lost in Translation packs some awards in over Kill Bill, because, let's face it, LIT was a better film. I loved Kill Bill and it's definitely in my top 5....but LIT is my fucking favorite of the year. I will say that a lot of these picks are actually safer than the Academy, but oh well...we're only human. The fact that we all don't have access to many of them and don't have screeners of any sort probably hurt the little movies. For the time being, though....I'll Certainly back Lost in Translation.

My 200th post. whoo-whoo.

Christopher Nolan's directive was clear to everyone in the cast and crew: Use CGI only as a last resort.

Staying in the subject, it's a shame that the Antoine Doinel box set didn't get a nod.
