agree. said something about it a couple of weeks ago, cause if you look at the site stats, it blows.
it's all pubricks fault.
it's been a while since a thread was locked. do it again, guys. for me. for old times' sake.
Someone needs to just log onto P's account and make a 10,000th post and get it out of the way.
this place has definitely slowed down, but as far as i'm concerned, xixax is still simply wherever your MacGuffin is.
is there a way to be proactive about the silence without spending money on advertisements or whatever? maybe try sending a pm to all the members just to see if they'd like to come check it out again or putting the word out on other sites to attract other users?
one thing that i think will help would be to keep personal attacks out of threads... it seemed to me like there was a streak of time prior to now in which most of the non-news posts were vaguely film-related fights that aren't any fun to read. it's the type of thing that discourages people from lurking, let alone posting. maybe more posters will return with a more welcoming atmosphere.
maybe we could also try making idle chatter visible to unregistered users. ... plus, if it's possible to bring back custom ranks, that seemed to be popular.

and for everyone who's been wondering what it's gonna take to bring back pubrick, i have the answer for you: Power Play.
If Wall•E didn't bring him back, then maybe new PTA will.
why did he leave in the first place?
no one is watching movies. I used to come here to find out about the movies I can't find in the papers, but fuck, man, fuck.
andykal thought I was tailing him a week ago, but really, it was because he was the only person actually watching movies these days.
also the lack of search button - sometimes I wanna discuss shit or wanna add to something I've read here long ago but can't find the last discussion on the said subject.
but I'm still here, wishing, hoping, thinking, and praying.
Yea, even I've lost a little zest for watching movies. My problem has always been that I've lived in the sticks and had to wait til video for most interesting releases, but its hard to always wait for the great new film to get on DVD. It gets tiring because everyone you know has already seen it and the excitement is already on the next film to come.
I still watch and think about film a lot, but I've also gotten into music pretty big. Music releases are equal for everyone so its easier to feel like you are in the mix with exception to being able to see all the shows I want to, but I feel I'll prioritize film back to my immediate future in the near future. These things go in circle. You can't always be huge about film, but I try to bring as much discussion to the board as I can.
But yea, the board seems dead for members. I always see a million guests and wonder why they aren't more active.
Hey, I watch movies. My movie-watching experiences are as manifold and rich as ever. I just don't talk about them here because this place is dead.
pete's right about the search button, that was a tough loss.
and now i feel inspired.
who killed xixax
lack of search engine.
hack, polka, and pub are DEAD.
facebook movie reviews.
other message boards (TRAITORS! you know who you are..)
people getting jobs.
people getting girlfriends, wives.
people getting old.
it's a combination of old members growing up and new members not being approved.
this site could be a big deal if it had stronger advertising. it's not like going online and posting your thoughts went out of style..

Make a new thread. If it's related to something, I'll merge it. Otherwise, it'll be fine to start a new discussion.

That's not true. I've approved everyone. They just don't post.
Losing the Search does suck donkey balls, and if there's a way to get it back (swapping the chat for it; moving servers, etc.) we'd like to know. But in the mean time, feel free to start new topics. The days of being afraid of being redirected are loooong gone. If it's connected to another thread, everyone knows I have a photographic memory to weed through the pages and find it.
Xixax is only active as long as it's members are. So, let us be the first place you come to (again) to share your thoughts on any subject. We pride ourselves on being a close knit family atmosphere message board where friendships have formed outside of the board; we are free from flame wars and arguments. We can and will remain so. So never second guess about sharing yourselves.
I will be the savior of Xixax.

Who's with me?
First, I wanna say thanks to Mac for being the true saviour of Xixax. Secondly I wanna apologize for getting married and older... Somehow this year pretty much every film I've seen has been mainstream, and the vast majority of them have sucked and were instantly forgettable. Certainly not worth thinking and writing about. I've really let the art house releases pass me by this year, and there have been so many that I badly want to see - but I've just stuck them on my Netflix... The Visitor and Bigger, Stronger, Faster come to mind. I really need to get back into watching more smaller releases and perhaps waiting on most of the mainstream stuff based on the consensus on here and not wasting my cash and my time on crap like Get Smart. Many of you here have a much broader knowledge of filmmakers than me, just looking at the selection of Criterions you guys have been buying lately... wow. I used to really feel like I was on top of everything as far as film goes, and whilst it is still my primary interest (as well as screenwriting) I really feel like I've let my scope slip become a megaplex whore of late. I'm going to blame it on living in the suburbs and being to lazy to drive into the city whenever I wanna see a good movie. This is why Britain is so good - everything is so close. But I love Xixax even if things are slowing down. It's my online home :)
You're welcome, Sleepless.
I'm sorry that I post in the Now Playing topic twice as much as anywhere else but music really has gotten more important to me than film. I work inside a movie theatre and so 90% of the conversations I have there are film related and when I get home I don't always want to write down the same shit I've been saying all day. For the sake of the site I will try and post more of thoughts on films that I see, not that it will liven things up but that's the best anybody can do I suppose.
I love you guys (and gals.)
I was with landmark for four years through college and had a lot of fun finishing my thoughts during the day over here at night time. you get to see or at least hear about all these films man, tell us about some of them.
and fuck chuck, if he's still running landmark.
I miss the "search" function. :yabbse-sad:
Weird because I feel that xixax is more alive now than a year ago, specially with the great movies we've been getting: there will be blood and all the oscar movies, walle and dark knight....
what's been lacking is discussion on older, more arthouse films. i wanted badly to hear opinions on the hiroshi teshigihara boxset but i think that thread had like five replies(one of them was a full awesome review but still), and A LOT of the criterions that come out and that you guys own, they could have their own thread, just to start it. just looking at the names of those films on visible threads (instead of being barely mentioned on the criterion thread) helps me to remember what to rent or blind buy if'm given the chance, or what to look for here and there.
this place is dead, but i still mange to find new discoveries in archive threads. i spent a whole work day accomplishing the Kubrick section and found new gems i somehow missed.
ALexandro's proposed idea with more talk of Criterions and such is a must i think. i've blind bought uncountable DVDs thanks to those like Ghostboy and others. i have a list that sits in my wallet with titles and names like Rolf De Heer (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=10037.0) who i've had trouble coming across, but will one day (thx in advance, Pubrick).
and thank you XIXAX in general for saving my cinematic naivety and filling my pleasures with movies and music and things i would've never discovered if it wasn't for you (and you and you and you..).
p.s. i had a GT sized piece on why XIXAX is important and lost it due to my cat running across my keyboard. this is why i usually never post more than three lines.
p.p.s. can we have more cat threads?
100% on board. Just got the Internet at home in fact. Because I used to post here during infrequent trips to the public library, which I don't know if you all knew, so now I don't have to worry about whether the latex-gloved regular next to me is reading over my shoulder. I also don't have to notice the middle aged man next to me who is looking at boy porn. Or politely disagree with elderly women as to who booked the computer first.
The search button is broken! And all this time I thought my browser was broken, both at the studio and at home...
Xixax is like a family. When your brother P or Polka leaves town, you're not gonna replace him with your sister's new boyfriend. At least not until a couple years.
Take me for example, the middle-child of the board. I can stop posting for a year, no one will even talk about it. But goddamn if I don't feel like I'm making a comeback when I do comeback. Much like when my sister came home from college and wrongly expected everyone to have missed her.
Xixax is an internet home. 30% of my posts have been on idle chatter. Movies have little to do with the lack of action these days. I think it's just us getting old and not caring about family as we used to.
I love Xixax with all my heart.
Please don't die. =(
I owe this place quite a bit. When I first came here years ago, my cinephilia was just developing. I knew I wanted to make movies, but back then the kinds of films that sat in my mind were those of Ritchie and the like. After about 6 months, those thoughts left me and I dove deep into more (generally assumed by the masses) obscure territory. Through all the wonderful people here I learned about the Nouvelle Vague, Italian Neo-Realism and the cinema of other countries and cultures.
Xixax has effectively (and completely) changed my taste in film (and music, to some extent). It's guided my love of film to such a fervor at times that it's left an unmistakable impression.
I know I rarely post - and most of what I say doesn't really provide any kind of contribution to the board at large - but I'm here as often as I can be. I've always meant to change my ways, but I now have less of a chance to do so than usual (i don't have a computer of my own and we've lost internet at my house). I will, of course, try harder to make more posts with some real substance to them, but it'll take time.
I just want to give this place a great big hug.
I think for me I needed Xixax to discover cinema, and now I know how to do that. I was really into discussing movies a year ago, but blew my wad on that and now I kinda hate talking about the movies I see. Maybe I'm just fucking mistaken, but isn't the Batman thread all about politics for some reason? Snooze.
There are a million reasons why I post less, getting married, not having a desk job, Lost hiatus, no interest in the art house films out right now, making my own films, starting a blog for CHUD among others.
I am seeing a screening of Man on Wire tomorrow, that might revitalize me.

Welcome to my world of useless posts, 72teeth.
Maybe the problem is that you only discover cinema once. When I first started here I was like 15 or 16 years old, I had just seen Mulholland Dr. and Magnolia and my eyes were opened to a whole new art form. As Gamblour said, this place was what led me to a lot of good, classic and smaller movies and sort of defined my taste as I first started watching movies passionately. That was also in highschool when I had no one to talk about movies with other than this forum; now that I'm in college it seems a lot of my friends have caught up and now I talk about this shit with them. I still look at the Now Playing thread as well as Idle Chatter and the Art Gallery, but yea, I hardly ever look through the actual movie forums here anymore.

So, uh, this place is awesome lately. Everyone seems to be coming back and discussion, while it could be better, it better than it has been in a good year or so.
P, what's your opinion on the xixax resurgence the last month or so?
Even though the question was not directed at me: I'll give it a shot. More posters are staying in because of the economy and everything is getting quite expensive lately. Its possible...
Just how message boards work.
To be honest, I think it has something to do with annoying threads like "Post Random A Image." People feel more compelled to post random things and I think they can open up easier. It's definitely a hard middle ground to navigate because Xixax is really well kept up and organized as opposed to many other message boards. But those boards have a lot of traffic because people just post what they feel. That can be dangerous.
Then again, could just be a phase. In any case, this place is (always) awesome.

I think this board needs to get on some advertising to get more funding as the whole donation thing is kind of discouraging. I mean, who wants to be a part of a forum whose fate is uncertain. People expect free shit so that's pretty much a default for any online community nowadays. Also, this board should be more exclusive in its discussion topics. I am not sure why Jennifer's Body is worth discussing even after just watching half of the trailer. People come here for guidance, critique and suggestions in the art of cinema, instead many, myself included, ends up talking shit about mainstream from the big six. When i first registered in 05 the ethos was better and forum had definitely more authority. The search function doesn't work for shit.
The only difference between now and any past year on this board is that in the past there were more people frequently posting. Were those times more about the art of cinema? I don't think so. Even back in the heyday of Xixax people complained about how this board wasn't as good as the original C&C board. The original board sucked to me but there is an obsession on this board with things always being greener on the other side. I've thought about this and the only difference between now and before is that more people posted. If we got more contributors, there would be more discussion, but it would still be a mixture of art and popular entertainment (with the latter always winning out in post count). Besides PTA, the films I remember getting the most discussion on this board amongst the majority were the Matrix movies. It seemed everyone here had an in depth theory about that trilogy and the discussion went on forever.
Actually, I think these days are better because people are older and saying better things about film. I got my best discussions on this board years ago, but now that I look back, I hate a lot of things I said. It isn't because I was just wrong, but because I was just too young to know better yet. When you're young and posting on a forum, you can't help but run into naive assumptions and bad ideas. We all did, but I've seen this board mature a lot so when people do express themselves now, there are better things being said.
We have to stop kidding ourselves about this board's past. People like Godardian and Budgie cannot be replaced, but they were always exceptions to the majority interest anyways.
And this post isn't so much a reply to Polanski, but a general thought to lots of past talk.
Even with the small userbase, this place still talks about more quality cinema than any other place I frequent. You can bump a Haneke Noe thread and be sure to get some responses. Same can't be said for other places. If anyone knows any other boards like this I'm all years.
The Top 25 of the Decade thread is a great thread and really shows how great this userbase is.
My favorite thing about frequenting this board for years is how intune with eachothers tastes we all are.

Everything there sounds true to my ears. Maybe I was embellishing with the entertainment > art ratio, but I think we still need to promote more discussion of these great filmmakers and films. I think too many posters are still happy to leave their comments at the door of discussion and keep it to a thumbs up or thumbs down voting.
I wish more newbies would integrate themselves into the board. I get that we're not the nicest when it comes to welcoming new members, but stick with it and you'll fit right in. I get the feeling most new posters just give up because of the (non)welcome they receive.
I was hoping getting mentioned on The Playlist would bring some new blood but that didn't happen.
At least P is back.
what's also fun is that since there's not a lot of posters each of us is an important character of our little xixax family haha. It's nice to feel at home on a board, nowhere else except real home can I talk so much shit and get away with it.
It's not about 'art vs. entertainment', it's about how interesting the things people want to say about either are.
It's interesting that i've seen some older members mention how unwelcome this board may seem. Is that like a cool thing around here? I am not trying to patronize anyone with my suggestions. But, i think the board should be exclusive in its taste, not in its member base.

hahaha, this made me laugh, it's so true. i'm not so sure if that speaks for the maturity of the board since i may hav gone overboard in my defenses of avatar recently (....nope). but while everyone had long ass theories about the matrix mythology (hahaha), no one could deny even then that the series went to shit very quickly. if the avatar sequel sucks and i keep talking as if it doesn't, we may be reverting.
everyone wants to talk about popular films, it's like the bread and butter of a functioning message board. it also gives us the opportunity to come up with smart things that we can all go back to our real life and repeat as if we made them up ourselves. and everyone wants to talk shit about obvious garbage like Jennifer's Body, it's like the toothpick of a functioning message board. it keeps us abreast (and what a breast!) of what's utter garbage and should only be spoken of with total distain. and everyone wants to talk about good movies in a really smart way once in a while, or at least read about it when others do, that's the succulent meat of a functioning message board.
i don't think our tastes need to be more exclusive. but i like the idea of advertising, we're looking into it.

haha, Walrus is ruthless lately.
Yeah I don't know what the fuck is up with him lately (you, as you are reading this) lol no one is given a break.
That's actually the truth. Now that I see the darkness that drinking brings, I don't really like it anymore, so I've been curbing it lately.
How do you drunks live like this?
everything in moderation. i like keeping a giant bottle of scotch around and only allowing myself to tap into it once a week. thats about the time i start bringing up 5 year old threads.
i don't mean to alarm anyone but Reelist is pretty much running this place right now.
somehow he's managed to have the first and last post of the day for the last couple of days almost exactly 12 hours apart..
last post on the board the night before last:

last night i watched it for the 5th time, on a 65in HD TV, on BLu-Ray, on Acid.
that just sounds like too much of a good thing!
last night I watched baseketball for the 17th time on a 19 inch screen, vhs, smoking catnip.
then everyone shut the hell up for 12 hours until he opened the gates again the following morning:

Norm's on WTF (http://www.wtfpod.com/) today, check it!
after a few grumblings, he closed the board again 8pm last night:

JB, are you ok? You need a bathroom break?
and i guess i'm about to break his routine but i just think we should be aware of what's going on. what happened to the night shift huh?
Maybe we should create a F.A.Q. over all the questions Reelist is just so anxious to know about.
Yes, the dude on JB's av is in dire need of a slash/wee/piss.
I didn't get Reelist joke about JB's av at first.
Now I get it. :)
Hehe, funny. :yabbse-smiley:
Had an hour to kill earlier and I wound up reading through a bunch of old threads that long predate my time here. Made me a little envious of what you guys had and it's a bummer that things have changed. Perhaps it was inevitable. I'd like to think that if I had stumbled upon xixax years ago I would have been much more in the mix and it would've been cool better getting to know you all.
That said, I have a couple of questions:
What happened to Pubrick and polkablues a few years ago when they stopped posting? They seem like such integral members. What brought them back?
Where have Stefen, Pas, and Gold Trumpet gone?
Stefen is now S.R. and he was here yesterday.

I figured out the name change. Though he is still visiting the site regularly, he seldom posts. I was just wondering if there was a reason. Or if it's merely boredom.

Which threads?
Why did so-and-so leave; what brought them back years later; whose identities have changed; who's next to croak?
This place is like a long-running soap opera.

Appealing to my ego will work every single time.
I've actually had two year-ish long hiatuses from this place, the first because I suddenly went from having constant internet access to having very intermittent internet access, and the second simply because I fell out of the habit of visiting. I found that unless I was logging on and checking in every day, I felt too diconnected from the community, and that disconnection was enough to make me stop visiting entirely.
But then I came back on a whim and I got adminned, and mod and I started photoshopping Brett Ratner into things and I haven't looked back since. Even running on fumes as the place has been lately, I love this site and the people in it too damn much.
And I wouldn't complain if Stefen, Pas, and GT decided to start posting again.

Lots of them. Mostly in the non-film discussion section, where I had seldom wandered before. I can't recall which ones. A bunch of the meta-threads like this one. A few dealing with personal lives and such. I say I was made envious not because of the specific content of what I read, but just the general sense of camaraderie that I know younger me would have enjoyed. As much as I like coming here now, I do feel late to the party, both personally (I feel a little too old for it) and with regards to the present state of the site.

It really is. Complete with lurid sexual content. You guys should be proud.
A lot of people have left after having kids, getting a serious job, or generally moving on to bigger and better things.
My time away was due to my computer dying and then a long term relationship that coincided with a change in lifestyle. I came back when I became a bit more organized and felt that my role in the long running soap opera was not being filled adequately. Also to talk about Kubrick, there's just nowhere to do that in real life without constantly defending EWS.
The most interesting departure must be Budgie who left to become a sex slave (seriously). Followed by cronopio who joined the hipster gangs of Mexico after his harrowing encounter with a phone-stealing street thug, and cine who became the CEO of a major company although he spends most of his time eating cookies and sending private messages to admin about how we're running the site into the ground.

Here's her original announcement, which is somehow even more bizarre than I remembered it:
Quote from: budgie on December 08, 2005, 06:48:58 AMhe also reminded me, in a roundabout way, of my inhumanity, and i'm fast becoming an animal. soon enough i'll give myself in slavery to a pyromaniacal pagan who i met at stonehenge on the summer solstice this year. consequently, i'll not be able to return fully now. i'll be far too busy growing veg and killing chickens, and won't be allowed to associate with young men.
