Dialogue-centric performance piece shot beautifully on Eastman Double X 5222. Yerp, that's the B&W negative stock from 007's bathroom kill. And good gosh - this movie likes movies.

Or rather, it's a film about a filmmaking couple that doesn't ever let up on the mechanics of artifice. Modes of the medium and a certain Buzzed Off the Jump perspective of the scene. Working in the biz and fashion yourself a socialist? Catch these hands. LA Times? Considering experiences in diminutive hindsight.

In these long winded spells, the focus on cinema as apparatus can sound more Levinson than Malcolm & Marie... but in a film about projected anxieties and refracted perception maybe I'm caught in my own bias. The truth, ruth, iz that the performances get the piece where it needs to go -- intensity's ebb & flow.

They're both so frkn funny in this.

Almost everything I've heard from people who've seen this is that it's awful. I watched half of Assassination Nation which was a borderline crime against cinema IMO, based on that he should have never been allowed to direct again.

You mention that this movie likes movies, that's exactly why I don't think ppl like ARP, Aster, Chazelle, Nichols and D Robert Mitchell (though I like him the best of these) are great filmmakers. Too much fanboy collaging.

Yikes! lol Don't stan any of those boiz you named, either. Aster's the only one i would die on a hill for, maybe.

But I really enjoyed Assassination Nation. I was working in a movie theater in LA at the time it came out and it was a delight to walk in and watch audience reactions to itz momentum, to say nothing of its structure, cast, or De Palma efficacy -- and those end credits are fucking FUN. Euphoria iz its own cultural heavyweight, but not a film so i'll keep quiet on that front here.

I guess the most successful "collage artist" in HWood's recent history was QT.
But even when I'm watching Guy Maddin, you know it feelz like film-love.

Sometimes I fear for my future genre film output o_o

Aster isn't untalented, though hereditary is total garbage, and I also kinda have a soft spot for Chazelle. I personally don't think Levinson even belongs with those guys, he's not on their level. Assassination Nation is just unreedeemble imo, I would have appreciated it if it leaned into genre sleaze but it's also trying to say something and win with the art crowd, and in that case in comparison it makes Spring Breakers look like the masterpiece everyone has talked themselves into believing it is.

And win with the art crowd
not sure it was, but not sure it wasn't !

Something I dig about M&M iz it puts in focus the whole like
how could we know what the intent of any auteur work iz?
As long as it's not purely commercial, the intent ends up being interpreted through the audiences' individual lens, (then re-interpreted in retrospect ad infinitum if the work has worth) and also as part of everyone on the crew ~

Many would and have said that about the "video store" generation (PTA, Tarantino, etc.). What's the difference?
