Title: TOP TEN - 2003!!!!!
Post by: bonanzataz on December 28, 2003, 07:15:25 PM
i hate em. you hate em. they're top ten lists! AND THEY'RE RIGHT HERE ON XIXAX! in the tradition of sir roger ebert, tell us. what are your top ten movies of the year?

here are mine (i may edit later, as i haven't seen everything i've been meaning to yet, but these are them right now).

1. Kill Bill Vol. 1
2. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
3. 21 Grams
4. Big Fish
5. Finding Nemo
6. House of 1000 Corpses
7.Matrix Reloaded
8. Anger Management
9. Old School
10. Elf

i had a really hard time making this list. i had to research and think back to the good movies. this was all i could come up with. it's not a great list, but it's OK. I own (or will own) all these dvd's, except for matchstick men (which has now been knocked off, effective dec 31), probably, so, they're good enough to buy, they're on the list.

City Of God can go on either 2002 or 2003 lists, since Miramax is pushing it for Oscars this year. Just like some of us are putting Dogville on our lists this year, but most people will count it as a 2004 release. Foregin distribution always blurs the lines.

I personally think it has. Or maybe it's as good as 2001, but the quality has been evenly spread out. I look at all the movies that didn't make my top ten list but came close...Man On The Train, Whale Rider, Finding Nemo, Raising Victor Vargas, Irreversible, Bad Santa, Big Fish, X2, The Fog Of War, etc....and that's excluding most of the popcorn movies I had a blast at, like Pirates Of The Carribbean....just a whole lot of goodness, all around.

2. Kill Bill
3. Lost in Translation
(man, it was really close between these three^)
4. ROTK

that'll do for now. American Splendor, Mystic River, Finding Nemo, Bish Fish, 21 Grams, Dogville and Legally Blonde 2 are among those I have yet to see. Maybe if I hadn't waisted my time seeing KB and PDL as many times as i did. :?

No, 2001 is wayyy better than 2003. Way. How can you compare Mulholland Drive, Amelie, Royal Tenenbaums, In the Mood for Love and Amores Perros with Whale Rider, Finding Nemo, Bad Santa, X2 and Pirates of the Carrabean. For god's sake.

i didn't rank it. on the other thread called "So far this year.." i gave it an honorable mention, and it was below all the real girls. i'm convinced it's best to judge it with the second part.

For a second, I thought you didn't like Kill Bill.

I saw the movie IN AMERICA and it made me cry like a baby. I think it was pretty touching flick, I'll probably own it on DVD (I also have Sheridan's other movie IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER). Anyway, I'd put it towards the top of the list. I guess if I have to compare it to a cheeseburger, it would have to be the new bacon BK burger. Fast food chains keep introducing all these new burgers, and they're all so dissapointing, then finally I munch on a BK bacon burger and I've gotten what I wanted -- satisfaction. I don't know though, I'm cynical about it because of the fact that I hadn't seen any previews on it. Like P said, maybe if I saw the trailers and sat in the hype, the movie would turn to dissapointment by betraying my preconceived notions. Or maybe I'm just a prick who likes bacon burgers? Who knows. Here are my favorites from the year, I still need to see 21 GRAMS, BIG FISH and maybe ELEPHANT.
*in america
*dogville (I ordered this puppy on DVD. I'd say it's a good buy)
*return of the king - my favorite aspect of the whole lord of the rings journey was the frodo and sam adventure. It makes me want to go on my own adventure..it's dissapointing though that my biggest adventure was getting someone else's mail in my mail box and going to their address to return it. Actually I accidently opened one of the letters thinking it was mine, but I threw that one away so I wouldn't look like some idiot. In retrospect, I wish there was some cash in it, but it was just a holiday card with a signature.
*lost in translation (I feel like a prick putting this up on my "list" because I didn't fall in love with it like everyone else, but what else is there? I guess 28 days later would work.)
*28 days (edit-LATER)works

wow, someone lives at the arthouse.  do you have something against 'hollywood' movies or what?

Quote from: GhostboyI personally think it has. Or maybe it's as good as 2001, but the quality has been evenly spread out. I look at all the movies that didn't make my top ten list but came close...Man On The Train, Whale Rider, Finding Nemo, Raising Victor Vargas, Irreversible, Bad Santa, Big Fish, X2, The Fog Of War, etc....and that's excluding most of the popcorn movies I had a blast at, like Pirates Of The Carribbean....just a whole lot of goodness, all around.
here is what i see...

2002
punch-drunk love, road to perdition, minority report, solaris, CQ, about schmidt. adaptation, about a boy, gangs of new york, i am trying to break your heart. lord of the rings: the two towers. catch me if you can. lilo and stitch. the 25th hour, the hours, moonlight mile, chicago, the ring, spider-man, bowling for columbine, the pianist, insomnia, y tu mama tambien, harry potter & the chamber of secrets, ice age, star wars episode II: attack of the clones, confessions of a dangerous mind, panic room,  igby goes down, far from heaven, frailty, 8 mile, signs, one hour photo, the good girl

2001
the royal tenenbaums, moulin rouge, memento, amelie, donnie darko, the lord of the rings: fellowship of the ring, a.i.: artificial intelligence, mulholland drive, vanilla sky, the man who wasn't there, oceans 11, harry potter and the sorcerors stone, ghost world, the others, snatch, black hawk down, monsters inc., blow, made, wet hot american summer, from hell, zoolander, spy game

this year i can barely find a dozen movie that i really really liked.  i'm not saying all  of these are fantastic, but damn, i have trouble finding near as many movies i can even say i 'enjoyed' this year.  i am embarrased so many movies that i had problems with still ended up being as high as they did for me (finding nemo: one of my LEAST favorite pixar movies, 21 grams: didnt enjoy it nearly as much as amores perros or as much as i thought i might for that matter, return of the king: some major problems with that too, etc.)  2001 and 2002 there were tons of movies i wished could make my list of top 20 but didnt have room for. this year blew hard.

I still can't see how it's any better than any other decade.  Good movies have always been coming out and overlooked by most, this year is no exceptiion.  Just because there is a forum of people who are actively participating in "good-movie-watching" doesn't make this year any more special.  If you wanna talk about the death toll of famous people this year, that's a different story.  2003 stands out in that respect, but good movies, that's a lukewarm argument at best.  "end of story" or not.

what the hell does this forum hav to do with it? in 2002 there was also a forum with ppl talking about movies and it didn't change the fact that 2002 wasn't very special. i've been saying this in real life and again, what the hell does this forum hav to do with it?

it's not that there's more good movies, but rather that the movies themselves are qualitatively better, whether there's more or less or if there's a bunch of losers talking about them is beside the point.

Title: TOP TEN - 2003!!!!!
Post by: pete on January 02, 2004, 01:57:52 AM
I didn't say anything about TALKING about movies, I said watching movies.  Just because more people have seen and still remember the films of 2003 doesn't make this a better decade (and Jeremy Blackman, c'mon man, 3 years is hardly a decade) or even the beginning of a better decade.
As to the point about qualitively better...I side with themodernage02 on this one.  A lot of overrated-ness, and most of that comes from a lack of better movies as a whole.

and most currently great directors weren't even in the house representin' this year.  The most high-profile directors this year were QT, Clint Eastwood, and Gus Van Sant, then I dunno, Alejandro Gonzales and Jim Sheridon.  QT would make that list in any year, and maybe Clint too,  but the rest of them consistently good directors are all still working on other projects.  And then some of them just flat-out sucked like Woody Allen and Ang Lee.
I'm not saying that only famous directors make good movies, or that first time nobodies can't be badass.  I'm saying had the good directors turned out some movies this year, and had the movies we have right now tagged along--then maybe 2003 can be an outstanding year, but right now it's no head and shoulder above nothing and never will be since that year is over.

And how can you say 2002 wasn't special when there were all those films themodernage02 mentioned ealier, on top of spirited away, hero, infernal affairs, rabbit-proof fence, talk to her and city of god?

overall, you know a year can't be that good when the most acclaimed movie of the year is an American movie that wouldn't stop taking potshots at those WHACKY  WHACKY Japanese people.

2001 (a brief summary of the great movies released in a so called awful year)

Memento
Amores Perros
Chopper
The Princess and the Warrior
Ghost World
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Mulholland Drive
Waking Life
The Man Who Wasn't There
Amilie
Sidewalks of New York
Vanilla Sky
LOTR: Fellowship
The Royal Tennenbaums
In the Bedroom
Donnie Darko
Monster's Ball

It's not quite 1999, but goddamn. These are some pretty good flicks.

I completely agree with this. Our culture is so addicted to listmaking and quantifying and summarizing and generalizing... it's getting to be a bit much. There really isn't some magical cutoff on 12/31 of any year, or at the last year of any decade. Those kinds of divisions are just convenient ways for our brains to organize things, nothing more.

4- Hulk (I think the majority of us would agree that this is the most artistically satisfying superhero picture since Burton's Batman Returns)

5- 28 Days Later

6- Once Upon a Time in Mexico

7- Intolerable Cruelty

8- Bad Santa

9- X2: X-Men United

10- Anything Else

I realized while typing this that this was a pretty crappy list.  Besides the first three, I didn't HIGHLY enjoy any other film of 2003 (so far anyway). Kill Bill was the only film that blew my mind, LOTR was close, but it dragged on too long at the end to conclude with the complete blowing of the mind, and Lost in Translation was just brilliant.

I'm almost certain that after this Friday, I will include Big Fish (hopefully, anyway), and whenever the oppurtunity arises that allows me to view School of Rock, 21 Grams, Mystic River, American Splendor, Cold Mountain, Last Samurai, Spider (I think that was 2003), and a few others that I can't think of right now, I will be able to give a thoroughly accurate Top 10 list for 2003.

Okay, I'm in the Uk, so my list is based on the best films released in the UK during 2003.

First off, my favourite film of 2003 was 25th Hour. Man, that film had it all - Ed Norton, PSH, Anna Paquin, Brian Cox, Barry Pepper. It looks so goo, just everything about it, amazing. I can't believe all the Oscar hype, etc just ignored it completely. Without a doubt that film is my favourite of 2003. No question about it. And now the rest of the best (so to speak), in no particular order:

Spirited Away
Punch-Drunk Love
Moonlight Mile
Igby Goes Down
Buffalo Soldiers
Belleville Rendez-Vous
Adaptation
Kill Bill Vol. 1
Pirates of The Caribbean
Return of The King
The Hours
The Pianist
X-Men 2
Intolerable Cruelty

OK...Here's my top ten list! I haven't seen Elephant, 21 Grams or Monster yet. So when I do, I'll revise my list. But for now...here it is!

10. The Shape of Things

Neil LaBute is always good at shocking and challenging the audience, and he does again here. Rachel Weiz and Paul Rudd are terrific!

9. Raising Victor Vargas

A film that knows the truth about relationships and youth.

8. Peter Pan

No other movie won me over more this year than this rare treasure. Rachel Hurd-Wood is simply wonderful!

7. Irreversible

Gasper Noe's film is deeply disturbing, dark, unrelenting...and profound.

6. Gerry

The story is simple, the filmmaking is amazing.

5. All the Real Girls

What a beautiful, haunting and vibrant gem this is. David Gordan Green is one of our best young directors. Paul Schneider is great!

4. Capturing the Friedmans

The best documentary in years!

3. Mystic River

It's a drama, crime story and a character study all rolled into one. Great performances all across the board, Eastwood's best directorial effort!

2. Kill Bill : Volume 1

Tarantino's bloody, brutal and brilliant homage! Regardless of how number 2 will be, it stands alone as his best movie since Pulp Fiction.

1. Lost in Translation

An extremly rare movie that gets everything just right. The best film of the year!

Am I allowed to put Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind on my list? It's listed as coming out in limited release on Dec 31, 2002, and most of its first showings were at 2003 festivals...

if so, it can sit at a firm 2nd place.

I'm really surprised to see how many have The Hulk on their top ten. I'll have to rent it. I like Ang Lee on and off, but I'm not a big fan of superhero movies, and that, combined with the roundly terrible reviews, was enough to inspire me to skip it.

The terrible reviews were from people who creamed their pants over Spiderman, so that gives you a good idea of the taste from those critics who shit on Hulk. Hulk was a thinking person's movie, which is why I agreed with Ebert's review that it's not for the typical comic book fan.

again,  I tried to like the Hulk (i promised to myself  that i'd be the first one of my friends to like the movie) but  i just couldn't... maybe it's me,  or maybe it's the fact that i saw it just after i saw Once Upon a Time in America ,which automatically became one of my all-time favorites.

Ah, OUATIA is great. 10 times better, 20 times better -- or not even greater at all. Its all arguable. Both Leone pictures are masterpieces of the cinema.

I heard almost nothing about Sylvia too upon initial release. No thread or even mention here. I read the Stanley Kauffmann review of it but immediately forgot everything he said. I still haven't went back to it to see how my thoughts correlated with his. It just so happened I was wondering around my video store and rented the film because I was surprised my little city even had it.

Its really one of the most exceptional biography films I've seen in a while. Of the last 25 years, Raging Bull is prolly the most applauded. I think its overrated. A good film that captures the fire of Jake LaMotta in the ring but generalizes his life outside the ring that doesn't get beyond typical drama. For those who love Raging Bull, I wish they'd see This Sporting Life from 1963. A movie that really captures the fire of frustation a sportsman has in his whole life and the ambiguilty of that pain. Sylvia does the same for Sylvia Plath's paranoia and sense of loneliness in a magnificent texture of feeling put onto film. The movie never talks about her general, hallmark events but the traumatic secrets that dominated her existence and kept her from any happiness. Gywneth Paltrow finally gets a role she can speak for just on physical characteristic and she is great through out the entire film. Her best performance ever. I couldn't imagine anyone else in the role.

I almost put this as the best film of the year. City of God has the filmmaking power of almost no other film in a long time, but Sylvia is the drama of recent years for me and ten times the film City of God is in substance. The filmmaking achievement in City of God just won me over. I'm going to buy the dvd of Sylvia and watch it again and hopefully elaborate more in my appreciation.

I should ask now, seeing as how North America didn't get Dogville until this year, can we vote for it in the 2004 things?

No. we go by imdb dates, we always hav, that's the true date of release for all films it's only a rare thing that u ppl got it a year after us this time. a shame, but that's just the way it goes.

otherwise change the name to "North American Xixax Awards"

Well, that's fair, I guess.  :(

But doesn't imdb list release dates per country? Or do we just go by first non-festival theatrical showing date?

Don't we force ourselves to more or less follow the Oscar dates? The imdb dates include any kind of limited release. I thought we excluded Dogville from the last awards for that reason.

MacGuffin! Please help!

Quote from: MacGuffin"Irreversible" is since it came out in the US in 2003.
"Dogville" has yet to come out in the US and has only done the festival circuit, so I'd say no. Also most members here have yet to see it.
"Spellbound" is a toss up. It was nominated for the Oscars held in 2003, but I don't think it got a release until 2003.

If we go by Oscar dates (which we pretty much do), then it would be eligible for Foreign Film since it was released in it's country of origin (and that country would have to submit it to represent their country) in 2003. But to qualify for the Oscars in other catagories for 2004, it would have to play for a straight week in the US (which it did). Thus, it would be eligible for the 2005 Xixax Awards in all catagories.

a list is dense enough. a list in which 1st place cant be distinguished is painfully aggravating. no offence ofcourse, if you can't choose thats cool  8)... plus it gave you the opportunity to fit last years best film to the list. i get where your coming from now. :yabbse-thumbup:

I have always used Oscar eligibility to determine year of release, as I live in the US.  Dogville wasn't released theatrically in the US in 2003, neither was Brown Bunny, so I count both as 2004 films (that is, if Brown Bunny gets picked up for distribution).  I don't count Virgin Suicides, Black & White and Jesus' Son as 1999 films, since they were all released in 2000 in the US (even though they all premiered at US film fests in 1999).  The rule of thumb, for me at least, is a film must play one week in NY and one week in LA in a regular theatrical run -- i.e., to establish Academy Award eligibility.

My 2003 list continues to evolve -- I finally saw Elephant, and must place that high on my list.  I must see Mystic River a 2nd time to determine if that is the best film of 2003, or if Elephant is.  I would place Lost in Translation at 3, Kill Bill 1 at No. 4, Gerry at No. 5.

I haven't seen Master & Commander, Sylvia, Girl With Pearl Earring, and a bunch of other films.
