How does one clean a dvd if it has an inch of old, crusted shit on it? I just want an answer, please don't try to sell me anything.
This may sound crazy, but sandpaper works really well
I heard toothpaste will make a good CD cleaner and will actually help repair scratches. Might work for DVDs too.
Toothpaste also applied to pimples will remove the oil from it when it dries it, you just pick the crust off and viola.

I think it is... I actually think I saw a DVD resurfacer-thingie for sale at Hollywood Video one time... unless I was imaginging it. I dread the day I'll actually have to try something like this out on one of my own precious DVDs.

There is an indie video store in Atlanta that will re-surface any cd, dvd or game disc. I took a couple criterions I bought used to them a while back. Whatever they did, it worked great. So I know it's possible, I just don't know how they did it.
As far as cleaning goes the soap and water thing is how I do it. I use a light dish soap that'll get rid of the oil left behind by fingers.
hold it close to a small flame for ten to fifteen seconds and you should be a-okay...
..Ducky and I wash our dvds together when we takes our bubble bath that my moms make sure the H2o is the right temperature.......
scrub w/bubbles is fun.....

I know you said not to sell you anything, but I have a DVD DR. It resurfaces DVDs and CDs... I used to work at a rental store and we did this for games and what-not all the time, so I "got one for myself".
It works really well for CDs... I fixed a Jimmy Hendrix and a Jeff Buckley. My personal DVDs are all in great condition, so I haven't used it on them yet, but the ones at the store seemed to react well to it.
Caution, it looks ugly. It makes the shiny side all white and crusty looking.
don't you hate it when you order something over the internet and it comes not scratched , but hurt ? i prepreprepre-ordered punch drunk love at the first chance i could. when i got it, the plastic thing you have to push to release the feature dvd was broken. i fixed it, but it's not the same.
also , those britons send their stuff open!!! they sell their stuff without the covering plastic!

you know those disposable pens that you use at school? they have a long, black part at the other extreme (the one that you not write with) and you can unscrew. well, chop that part with a knife.
these pens (made in China, i think) have the exact same measure that a carton has to the plastic in a DVD . so if the plastic bit that says "PRESS" is loose(like in my case), you have to glue the part of the pen you chopped to it, and then to the carton. this kind of things are hard to explain ...

That's good advice, here's some more good advice: always (taps goggles) protect your eyes when cleaning DVDs.
