that was miserable
Agreed.
You know, just the fact that it's called Psycho means the person should've known it wasn't a good choice. No matter what you do, you can't make that title fit. And yeah, it was crappy regardless.
It goes to show what makes "Shining" so great.
the only thing to do next is to re-cut the entire film so that it's a happy movie... the bar has been set. fuck, if someone made the phantom edit, they can do this. that i'd really like to see.
i'm not playing it down, it was great!
i don't know if i mentioned this at all, but has anyone seen the trailer for "the minus man"? if you have, tell me your thoughts; if not, go check it out. it's not like this... it's real... but it's a great trailer for a film. and a film i really liked and thought was underated

A feel-good slice of the 'Shining' ax
It's a heartwarming comedy about an eccentric writer and a precocious boy who cross paths and share … a nightmarish descent into madness and murder?
One of the most popular pass-it-on Internet gags of the moment is a movie trailer that re-imagines the 1980 Stanley Kubrick film "The Shining" as a dramedy in the mold of, say, "About a Boy." Only original footage and dialogue from the film is used, but with soaring music and deft editing, it makes the movie seem more lump-in-your-throat than ax-in-your-head.
The faux trailer has created a stir for its creator, Robert Ryang, an editing assistant in Manhattan who works on television commercials. He crafted the trailer for a contest by the Assn. of Independent Creative Editors, but a few weeks ago it went pinging across the Internet.
His inspiration? "These really formulaic movies where you have someone — a wacky girlfriend or a neighbor or, like, a dog or something — come into the damaged life of someone and everything miraculously gets better."
Ryang's been flooded with fan e-mails in recent days. But Sandy Bresler, an agent for "Shining" star Jack Nicholson, warned that Warner Home Video might not find the spoof amusing. "They are using original footage without permission," he said. Warner executives were not available for comment. Ryang himself has one defense: "We're not making any money."
Jesus, fucking Warner.

that was perfection at a new level. deserving of its own thread? we'll wait and see.. definitely as good as the shining trailer. not sure about the song choice at the end but at that point it's already proven its genius.

http://movies.collegehumor.com/items/2006/01/collegehumor.1652506.mov
That last one is very well done, Sleepless in Seattle. The one with Monsters Inc wasnt so good. It had some funny parts, but its not well done... you wouldnt buy it as a real trailer.
Rounding out the trio of best fake trailers (also including Shining and Toy Story Requiem) is this: 8 1/2 Mile (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wec3GCdV7yY&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fbrightlightsfilm%2Eblogspot%2Ecom%2F2006%2F07%2Ffellinis%2D8%2D12%2Dmeets%2Deminems%2D8%2Dmile%5F14%2Ehtml)
Nah. Beyond the initial cleverness of the title thing, it relentlessly shows what the lyrics are saying in a kind of annoying and boring way. It pairs almost every line of the song with an accompanying image, and limits itself that way, whereas The Shining trailer transcended cleverness, showing exactly what trailer cutting does to an almost scary degree, and every little piece of it is given a second meaning when juxtaposed in the viewers mind regarding what that shot was actually about in the actual movie of The Shining (including the title!).
This 8 1/2 one has none of these meanings or relevancies.
P.S. I think it's time to split this thread and put it as Fake Trailers under News & Theory. It's odd that all of the fake trailers are going to the Stanley Kubrick forum.
i'll do that..
i think if that were edited like a trailer rather than a music video it would be much better. but it's still pretty good.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCxF6idjqnk&mode=related&sear%20ch=
if this was just edited better it would almost be on par with the shining. so many moments that become believably horrible out of context.
The Vader Sessions
David Poland's Hot Blog just posted a downright hilarious clip called The Vader Sessions, which is hosted on YouTube. The clip is just under ten minutes long, and it's basically a bunch of Darth Vader scenes from the original Star Wars. But some clever kooks went and replaced all of the Sith Lord's dialogue with passages from other James Earl Jones performances. And since the actor's voice is so darn distinctive, you'll have no trouble buying Darth Vader as a stone-cold pimp with a stanky backhand.
The "new" Vader spouts dialogue from Field of Dreams, Coming to America, Soul Man, The Great White Hope, The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings, and (I believe) The Hunt for Red October.

Were those really edited by the same guy? They even end with the same e-mail address as The Shining trailer does... but those two are terrible! When I saw the PAX thing on the Brokeback one, I thought it would be like a CleanFlix version of Brokeback Mountain, which might have been funny, but the idea actually used was stretching it. And the Fast and the Curious was mildly clever, but sucked.

that was completely amazing. i couldn't believe someone had taken it somewhere new and done it so well. i even thought it had surmounted the biggest problem faced by these almost-perfect trailers.. that is, like Toy Story/Requiem, the joke invariably kills itself in the last minute. BUT then the last 15 seconds happened, with the subtitle "two the surface". that's the most stupid title i've ever heard, it's not even funny stupid, it's just shit. after so much cleverness and imagination, that's what he went with? i can't understand that.
well, anyway, that's really all it has wrong. this just shot straight to number 2 in the all time trailer charts, trailing (:ponder:) the shining which looks set to hold the top position forever and ever and ever.
This one doesn't really compare to that brilliant Titanic sequel, but it's still one of the better recontextualizations. Sort of the opposite of what Shining did.

Brad Neely recorded an entire audio track to play while watching Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone (you just put his on a cd player or whatever and turn the volume down on the tv). Just when I thought this gag could not be made fresh again.
maybe I'm just noticing this, but I think this is a terrible new trend for this technique in trailers, most recently seen in the Avengers trailer: a character would say something real witty and snappy, and it would cut to elsewhere, anywhere in the movie, where another character is laughing, as if at that joke.
It's been going on for a while. It's pretty shitty and obvious, at least to me. Maybe it's not obvious to most moviegoers. It also happens with lines of dialogue.
Most recently, I noticed this in the trailer for Premium Rush, where I think the bad guy says something like, "Are you threatening me?" and JGL is riding his bike and says, "Count on it." I'm pretty positive those are two different scenes.
