When in Film-school, we were taught that you should keep the boom out of the entire full frame, no matter how it would be masked because you never know how it will end up being presented (look at the Pee Wee's Big Adventure fullscreen, there are flubs-a-plenty because it was just unmasked.  Kubrick wasn't the only person to shoot for both.

For T2 (at least), Cameron shot 70mm and digitally tracked two different versions, one for 4:3 and one for 2:35.  The comparison is pretty interesting.

Cameron shot T2 using the Super-35 format, and he was one of the few directors to actively take part in framing the 4:3 versions of his films.  I think he used something close to common topline (where 2:35:1 is extracted not from the middle but closer to the top of the frame).  That way when you open up the matte you get normal-ish headroom and more picture at the bottom.

You can't really frame for two different aspect ratios, but you can frame for one and protect the other from boom mics, lights, etc.  Kubrick wasn't the only one who protected the 4:3 frame, but some protect more than others.

it's not only protection, if diligent enough you could find a happy median between two different shots. it just takes being anal, something I'm sure Kubrick was aware of.

okay i'm done till christmas i swear...

6 FILMS = $38

Warner Bros. changed their insane DVD2Blu program so you can send in literally ANY DVD for ANY MOVIE and exchange for a new Blu-Ray for like $4.99-$6.99.  It's sounds pretty awesome, we'll see how long they take to ship.
Christopher Nolan's directive was clear to everyone in the cast and crew: Use CGI only as a last resort.

this doc shows, politically effective or not, jimmy carter was probably the most beautiful man to have ever occupied the oval office. truly a compassionate man.

^ minus The Shin, went with everything modgers did up there (mostly for x-mas gifts) via the same (possible scam) DVD2Blu.

also got (but possibly not) The Searchers, Rio Bravo, Dumb & Dumber, Aviator, L.A. Confidential

traded for DVDs: Julian Donkey Boy, The Mask, Dumb & Dumber, L.A. Confidential, The Aviator, Rio Bravo, Fools Rush In, The Whole Nine Yards, The Brown Bunny (possibly viewed as porn?), Romper Stomper

10 for 53 (possibly 0 for 10 plus $$ that shouldnt have been spent in the foist place)

RegularKarate

Question!

How are you sending in the DVD discs? (don't say mail!)

Don't worry, I read it the same way. I was trying to figure out what RK's preferred mode of dispatch would be.

Sorry guys, I was foreseeing a snarky comment.

I meant how they were physically shipped... I just want to do the least amount of work necessary.  Padded envelope it is.
