The Director's Chair / Re: Roger Avary
Last post by Reel - Today at 12:35:09 PM
Since Roger Avary has been making the rounds as a new podcast host, I've caught up on a bunch of his interviews and learned some interesting things about Pulp Fiction:

- Reservoir Dogs was originally written to be one of the 3 segments in Pulp Fiction. In early drafts of Pulp Fiction, the briefcase contained the diamonds from the Reservoir Dogs heist. When asked what's in the briefcase in the final version, Avary said that it's whatever the person looking inside wants it to be. Roger himself thought the glowing light was too suggestive of what could be in there.

- The scene in "The Bonnie Situation" where the guy bursts in shooting and misses Jules and Vincent 6 times was an idea Roger initially came up with for True Romance. It would've happened in the scene where Clarence goes to Drexl's club and robs him.

- The "I just shot Marvin in the face" part of "The Bonnie Situation" was also an idea Roger came up with to be in True Romance.

- "The Gold Watch" was written by Roger as a feature film called "Pandemonium Reigns", but when Tri-Star hired them to write Pulp Fiction they basically compiled everything they'd ever written together to come up with the final draft.

Yet he only gets credit for writing one story, not even the screenplay! Those are all the best parts of the movie! I can't help but think that has something to do with them not working together again for 30 years...on a podcast

The Director's Chair / Re: Spike Lee

I havent seent his in a trillion years, but I do remember that Malik Hassan absolutely smashed it on the cinematography. He's shooting the new Luda movie. PS. I miss the 90s when directors and DOPs would really take a chance with cinematography. I saw Se7en in IMAX and my lord, Fincher and Darius Khondji did some of their best work. The high angle shot looking down on Mills (Brad Pitt) as he jumps onto a ladder on the side of a building, mid chase, is INCREDIBLE....Can't wait to rewatch Girl 6!!! Thanks for the incredible visual reminder, these stills look great

The Director's Chair / Re: Wes Anderson

Didn't Wes used to have his own forum here?

I'm trying to clean out my Netflix queue, and I'm using the snowball method where I watch the shortest films first and go in order. So, today I watched Poison, and then The Rat Catcher.

I loved Dahl as a kid. James and the Giant Peach was one of the first books I read. I found it all that there was this a little fanfare around his collection of shorts. It's really cool that Anderson did Yes, and I wonder if he'll ever make a Dahl feature. On to The Swan.

Quote from: Drenk on January 02, 2025, 06:17:56 PMThis is why the secrecy about the title and basic synopsis is pure paranoia. At this budget level, we'll get bombed by infos and trailers months before release day.

I would say there's, at least, a decent amount of value in condensing that info bombing to a tighter timeline. No sense stretching the word of mouth marketing too long. The general public doesn't need to know anything about this movie until the spring. I'm guessing to the average person it'll seem like a fun summer surprise movie that isn't some superhero nonsense and it'll do fine along side the other major movies.

Maybe, but it's all about that first week these days. And those Imax screens, especially, are being sought by other films. These aren't the days where you can let a movie sit out there all summer and just keep creeping upward on hte box office counter. Desperate theaters will punt you the hell out if they can have an extra screen or two for "My Bloody Axe Friend 3." ... You have to knock those first 5 days in theaters out of the park and generate buzz. You must avoid phrases like "underwhelming" "fell short of projections" "underperformed" because there are no do-overs on the first weekend.
