Title: Irreversible DVD
Post by: cinemanarchist on August 05, 2003, 08:25:27 PM
I hoped some of you picked this up today...$19.99 at Best Buy. This one sure doesn't get any easier to watch upon repeat viewings!. But one thing really bugs me about this dvd and that's the features. It was reported very shortly before release that this would have a Gaspar Noe commentary on it, and it does not...and the back cover says there are deleted scenes and a making of on the special effects...and it doesn't. Please let me know if I am just retarded or if there is some serious false advertising going on here. The only features on my disc were soundtrack...two music videos and some french teasers.

I had the smae problem. I called Lions Gate Entertainment and they said they'd look into it and get back to me.  When they do I'll post their response.

Wow, that is some buuuuuuuuullshit.  Most sites still list a Noe comm.  I'll hold off on this or, better yet, Netflix it if there is no commentary...

I had the same problem with the "Monster's Ball" DVD, which is also from Lions Gate. There were not as many special features as they said on the back.

I rented it last night and I wanted to see how they did the face smash special FX and I couldn't find it.

When you go to the extras there is a soundtrack link, 2 other links (which go to some sort of extra shots??) and a teasers link.

Also, when you roll over the lions gate logo on the main menu and click, you get another teaser trailer thingy.

I couldn't find anything for the commentary as well.

Bastids.

Yeah, i e-mailed them wondering what was up and of course they never replied. So then yesterday i called them to find out why the DVD was missing those features and the guy told me he'd call me back today and of course never did. Now when i call them all i get is an answering machine. I think we should all demand a replacement and/or our money back. This is seriously ridiculous.

you should demand your money back, but not because there werent any special features.

Maybe they're saving them for a Signature Series release.

LESS EXTRAS FROM LIONS GATE

Just a heads-up to anyone planning on picking up the disturbing Irreversible. The Lions Gate disc was originally announced to include an audio commentary with director Gaspar Noe, deleted scenes and a featurette on the special makeup effects. Unfortunately, none of those are on the finished disc. The back of the box still lists the deleted scenes and the featurette, but they are not there. The only remaining extras are a couple of music videos and some trailers. Disappointing yes, but I still recommend the film.

You should demand your money back BECAUSE there aren't any special features...AFTER THEY ADVERTISED THAT THERE WOULD BE...EVEN ON THE BOX ITSELF! Oh, by the way, the guy on the phone I spoke with said that those two music videos, "stress" and "outrage" ARE the deleted scenes! Pretty misleading, right?[/quote]

So much for me buying this DVD. I love the movie, but I don't really want to watch it again. I would have, though, with the commentary, and I really wanted to see those docs. Oh well. They'll probably release it again, like they did with Monster's Ball. Losers.

I haven't seen it, but I'd give it a          .

Based in part on the reports of little to no "usable" footage of Monica Bellucci, even though she is naked for a while.

actually, there's only one deleted scene. in which you see alex (bellucci), in a coma. (that scene was filmed in a hospital). also, Lions Gate was full of shit when they said that the dvd would contain comentaries from cassel, dupontel & bellucci. (on the french version, there's only Noé's commentaries.)

You guys should buy the french version instead...(if you speak the language of course), and, if you also own a multi-region dvd player. There's loads of extras on studio canal's edition. (deleted scene, post cards, soundtrack on a separated cd , one short film, Noé's commentaries, a 16 pages booklet...etc..

Lions gate's original plan was to simply include some extras of the french dvd, but for some reason, nothing was translated, not even noe's commentaries...so in the end, they decided to only add the trailers and 2 video clips.

Can anyone here explain, or direct me to an article, that goes into detail about how the special effects were achieved. The nightclub beating is without doubt one of the most shocking things I have ever seen on film and I want to know how they did it. Also the way the camera continually goes in and out of the glass window of the taxi while it's moving has got my brain equally hurting. I understand most of it is CG, but there's a lot more to it than that, I'm sure.

Lions Gate wrote me an e-mail back saying that they've now received tons of e-mails like mine and are still looking into the problem and will get back to me as soon as they have an answer.

I actually wanted to buy the French DVD...but unfortunately don't speak French. Why couldn't they have just included English subtitles? Must have something to do with distribution rights...unless of course Gaspar Noe just doesn't give a shit about us English speakers.

It's not that kind of movie to drool over her. She gets graphically raped for 10 minutes with no edits, then gets her face kicked in and bloody. You're better off getting Matrix Reloaded, or going here:

I know what the movie is about. I was half serious when I said that. And by drooling over I meant that I think she is very beautiful. I don't masturbate to movies.

Why do we keep over-analyzing the things we are saying to each other?

Hmmm...could it be because I'm going by exactly the words you are posting, and you're putting words in my mouth by assuming I know what you mean?

How do I know that you know what the movie is about? This thread doesn't explain it. And how do I know you are 'half-joking'? Rape is not to joke around with. And in no way did I imply that you masturbated to movies. The other recommendations were stating we all think she is the cat's meow.

If you DID want to masturbate to Irreversible, technically you could, somewhat guilt-free, during the last twenty minutes.

Okay, here's what I've dug up.  Noe turned in a commentary and some other features way past the deadline for the master, so this is what we're getting for now.  There might be a 'signature series' down the road (with the way things have been going at Lion's Gate, I would almost expect it-- Chinese Box anyone?) with those features added on.  Don't expect 'Carne' or any other shorts though, Noe refused to add those.

I just finished watching this movie about 5 minutes ago. I'm sure this movie will stick with me for a long time after having seen it. It's certainly one of the darkest, most disturbing movies to come around in years. There's been all this talk about that one certain rape scene. Although it was tough enough to sit through that you feel like putting your hands over your eyes, I didn't think that it was the most disturbing part of the movie. The movie has all this other stuff before that scene even occurs. The camera goes all over the place so much I felt like I was gonna be sick within the first 10 minutes. But I think the movie is profound, heart-breaking, truthful and I'm sure it'll be on my ten list (haven't made it out yet).

..yeah this film stick in your head after awhile.....annnd it makes me wonder is it art or just trash.(i.e. kids).....ans i came to my connclusioon that i thinnk it is art....

SPOILERS

first off i loved that "camera on a string" sh*t...i find that kinnd of stuff refreshing ..and innnvigorating....its neat to watch it ...i never elt sick....the face beating sequence was hard to watch....and the effects are amazing.....and the whole leading up to that scen was so energetic..annd badass...yeah all that stuff was sick but .it got an effect out of me....the rape scene was executed perfectly.....in terms of the way it was shot...with the camera that just ....BOOM-..drops on the floor annd your POV  is belluci's pain.....and then afterwards ...right before the guy smashes her face the camera traces towards them and makes a drilling sound as it approaches then the chaos connntinnues.....its the way that whole sequennce (grannted it was phucked up)......but it was filmed with a fresh sense that gives it a difffferent annnlgle ...rather than steadicam the whole thing......then the party scene later was fabulas in a quasi-scorcesse fashion....then pretty much everything after that was peachy.....the bedroom scenes were solid....and the whole ending spiral sh*t was cool......spiraling outh of conntrol.....or something ...i donn't know really.......im nnot the keen in delving into the "meanings" of all films ...i nnneed to watch it more i guess.....buit i still feel tthat it is artistic.....and warrants more accolades......this aslo made my original list of 30 ..for the dekapenticon....

onne thing though......whats with the 2001 poster reference on the wall....?

lions gate are a bunch of fuckers, i emailed them for a straight year, every week (just saved the message and kept on sending it) about the exact same problem with "Bully."  they don't give a shit about the customer because they gave me some lame excuse and never answered my real questions!  i was hoping they'd want to buy my friendship by giving me some free dvds or something but nothing ever happened.  i even threatened sending out mass emails to deface their company.  i really wanted the larry clarke commentary (his for another day in paradise is a good one).

lol... i know it's kind of pathetic but i hate being short changed on my dvds!

It symbolized her just-discovered pregnancy.

Also, Noe detractors will be quick to point out that he's simply trying to reach greatness by association. He does love Kubrick, though.

That's what I thought the poster was there for. But I expected the movie to open with her walking down the tunnel and it instead opens with two guys in what looks like a jail cell. The first line in the movie is "Time Destroys Everything" and they start talking. Does that scene have anything to do with the rest of the movie?

Those two guys were obviously in there for doing something to other people, but not to anybody that's in the movie. They weren't the ones that raped or killed any of the main characters. So, what's the purpose?

I Stand Alone is great.  The critics quotes on the box compare it to Taxi Driver-- stylistically, that's a fair assessment.  My favorite moment: before scene of complete unpleasantness happens, a warning flashes on the screen that you should leave in 30 seconds.  And the warning is pretty justifiable.
