This show is hilarious.
I was wondering if it would stretch thin with comedy having a dual Daily Show/Colbert Report, but the show is still very hilarious.
"Books are all fact, no heart."
I think having a studio audience was the only bad part. Best debut: Stone Philips in an anchor-off.
Tonight's was pretty damned hilarious as well.
I see good things coming from this show.

i saw that. it was some funny shit. only weird thing was when they turned the camera on the camera operator (or something) and you could see the teleprompter in the background. kinda ruined the vibe for a split second.

Yeah, I wondered if they were going to use a joke on that, but they didn't, so it really just destroyed the mysticism of them making it up on the spot.
My standards for this show weren't necessarily low...but I wasn't too sure what to expect. These last to episodes have been hilarious. I was worried it'd be the daily show 2. But its almost like its more fake than the daily show and makes fun of the news instead of the people in the news.
Yea thats the best i can explain it for now...
"I Should be on 60 minutes, I just nailed you!"
one other thing - i've got high hopes, however, i do think there's some validity in this paragraph (particularly the bold) from Slate:
Quote from: this Slate article (http://slate.msn.com/id/2128307/)The whole joke of Colbert's persona is that he deliberately avoids asking those questions, or indeed, any questions at all. Stephen Colbert (or "Stephen Colbert," the character he plays) is proudly ignorant, aggressively obtuse—qualities that make him perfectly suited for parodying the new breed of cable-news bloviators. But by its very nature, the position Colbert occupies—the butt of his own show's joke—seems more difficult to sustain than Stewart's role as the eternal observer.
i'm curious to see how he'll pull it off.
While I agree that Colbert was hilarious in small doses, his satire on pompous news reporters has yet to let me down.
The new guy that filled in for him on the Daily Show last night is sort of iffy. I mean, it was his first one, so I'll have to warm up to him (I'm just recently adjusting to the guy that filled in for Carrell.)
As long as Colbert will have the The Word of the day with those bullet points when he talks, I will watch the show.
Its a pretty funny satire on the blowhards of the industry. He's great at playing the smarmy asshole.
He's got some amazing lines:
"Open wide baby bird, cuz momma's got a big fat nightcrawler of truth."
"And with any luck, these two will mate, uniting America with the vastness of space in a beautiful but unholy, galactic sexual congress."
Edit:
I have to add that "The Word" is just fucking brilliant. the way the text counterpoints and justifies what he says, it's so damn smart. Like the text is its own autonomous entity.
And the word bacchanalia is coming up too much lately. I love that word.
This show is proving to be fantastic. I look forward to it as much as or more than I do The Daily Show.
See what I did? I nailed you.
Bears!
Colbert doing the walkout insted of the guest = funny shit
Something was driving me crazy last night: does anybody know how... when he's debating himself and they're cutting back and forth, a la Gollum... how the righteous fuck do they make his tie change color? My ability to sleep at night may depend on getting an answer to this question.

They probably tape him saying all his lines for one side, then he changes his tie, then they tape him saying the lines for the other side. That's the only thing I can think of. Or a wizard did it.

No, coz when you watch his face during the cuts, it's clearly all one take, just switching between the angles (although there were also a couple of prerecorded reaction shots that they cut in there). It's definitely some sort of sorcery.

That makes sense. That's a definite possibility.
Here's how they do it, I watched it, paid attention to his hair, and realized it:
I think that Stephen is looking into a mirror, and they have two cameras positioned, with a green screen behind him. The reason is that his hair and coat breast pocket flip sides every time. You'll also notice that his reaction is the same when the image flips, indicating that he's performing it real time. The tie changes colors because it's being green screened, you can see a slight green hue on his shoulders, plus there is slight flickering around his chest, probably some imperfections in the greenscreening. I've included a diagram:

Colbert riffs put to paper
Anchor to pen a Book Report
By STEVEN ZEITCHIK
Call it the Book Report.
With his show a ratings smash, Stephen ColbertStephen Colbert is putting pen to paper for a comedy tome.
Title will be published in September 2007 by Warner Books, the same imprint that released "America (The Book)," the bestseller by "The Daily Show" scribes.
Colbert garnered a solid seven figures for the deal, insiders said.
Still-untitled book will feature many Colbert riffs but is not expected to feature an illustrated component like that of "America," which memorably included a collage of naked Supreme Court justices.
And unlike that title, Colbert will primarily write this book himself instead of collaborating with his writing team, insiders said.
Colbert was a contributor to "America" but not a lead writer.
"This book will have the same noble goal as my television show: to change the world one factual error at a time," Colbert deadpanned.
Deal was made with Trident Media GroupTrident Media Group agent Dan Strone and Colbert manager James Dixon.
" 'America' broke the ice in a big way for this category (of political humor)," Strone said. "But I don't think you'll see this book mirror 'America.' "
"The Colbert Report," based on an absurdist fake-news ethos similar to that of its "Daily Show" lead-in, has been a strong ratings performer since it launched last year, often retaining nearly the entire audience of "The Daily Show." SkeinSkein has been picked up for a full 42-week run.
Colbert also stars in upcoming ThinkFilm pic "Strangers With Candy."
After Colbert broke out with his own program, a book was perhaps inevitable. While many TV series don't translate to the page, "America (The Book)" was a monster hit when it came out in 2004, its textbook format a perfect satirical gun in a hot-button election year. Title sold millions of copies and spent many months on bestseller lists.
The paperback edition of "America," which will include new material, is due out in September and will be presented as a "Teacher's Edition," complete with corrections and cross-outs.

Yeah, I watched that little piece of heaven earlier today. Colbert should be made the Patron Saint of owning.
Wow, it's all really funny, but those tight asses don't laugh at all. Pretty ridiculous. The end of the car chase had me cracking up the most. And "glacier."
i saw that in the morning, it was pretty hilarious . i also saw the double bush thing. i think it's the first time i've felt sympathy for bush... strange shit.

My god....
wow that's a good satire. colbert was so in character that not only people thought it was real--he also didn't even let his subject in on the joke. that's good.
He had me at "I'm having tea with Cinderella to discuss why she doesn't like Mr. Poopy Pants.".....or something like that.
O'Reilly, Colbert to Trade Appearances
NEW YORK (AP) - It may feel like looking into the mirror for Bill O'Reilly and Stephen Colbert next week.
The Fox News Channel host and Colbert, who has essentially based his comic character every evening on Comedy Central on him, will trade appearances on each other's programs Jan. 18.
"I'm really looking forward to speaking to a man who owes his entire career to me," O'Reilly said.
On "The Colbert Report," Colbert portrays a self-involved talk-show host who has tried to bring "truthiness" to the world. His character owes an obvious debt to O'Reilly, who holds court in the "no-spin zone" each evening.
On "The O'Reilly Factor," O'Reilly portrays a ... um, he hosts the top-rated program in cable news.
"I look forward to the evening," Colbert said. "It is an honor to speak face-to-face with a broadcasting legend, and I feel the same way about Mr. O'Reilly."
Has he every actually attacked O'Reily in any way? Or are you just saying his whole character is an attack?
watch more colbert report. it's far from mediocre.

Colbert, O'Reilly face off on both shows
Parody met its inspiration Thursday when Stephen Colbert and Bill O'Reilly traded guest appearances on each other's shows in an exchange that Colbert called "a meeting of the guts."
Colbert has molded his tough-talking, America-defending persona as host of the satirical "Colbert Report" largely on the Fox News pundit. On his Comedy Central program, Colbert has often spoken reverently of O'Reilly — or as he affectionately calls him, "Papa Bear."
"The Colbert Report" and "The O'Reilly Factor," the top-rated program in cable news, were taped one after another early Thursday evening, with "The Factor" airing at 8 p.m. EST and "The Report" at 11:30 p.m. EST.
Once inside Colbert's studio — decorated for the occasion with a large "Mission Accomplished" banner and a portrait of O'Reilly placed fireside — O'Reilly seemed to be regretting the decision.
"This was a huge mistake, me coming on here," he muttered.
It may have been a greater error allowing Colbert into the Fox News headquarters, located near the "Colbert Report" studios in Manhattan. There, Colbert smuggled a microwave out of the green room, a bounty which he proudly displayed at the conclusion of his show.
A spokesman for Fox News confirmed that Colbert stole the microwave, but said it was all in good fun.
Appearing in the "No Spin Zone" of "The O'Reilly Factor," Colbert remained in character — though it wasn't always easy to tell.
"Who are you? Are you Colbert or Colbert?" prodded O'Reilly, pronouncing the "T" in one case, leaving it silent in the other (as Colbert does on his program).
"Bill, I'm whoever you want me to be," answered the comedian.
O'Reilly interviewed Colbert with a generally bemused attitude: "Don't you owe me an enormous amount of money?" he wondered. The interview was followed by a discussion with several analysts on why "The Colbert Report" and its sister fake newscast "The Daily Show" are popular.
Colbert had spent the week preparing for the arrival of "Papa Bear," and hyped it Thursday as "the greatest TV crossover since the Flintstones met the Jetsons."
For the first time, Colbert began the show's interview segment seated, allowing O'Reilly to enter to applause. Well, mostly applause. O'Reilly blamed a handful of boos on "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart, joking that he was in the audience.
Colbert's reception included a montage of clips from both shows, titled "Great Minds Think Alike." He also had O'Reilly read several lines for a new O'Reilly-based character in his "Tek Jansen" cartoon series.
O'Reilly also managed one dig of NBC, which he has recently criticized as a liberal-leaning network. When asked what was "destroying America" more — NBC, activist judges, illegal immigration or gay marriage — O'Reilly didn't hesitate in answering NBC.
But not all of Colbert's expectations were met. When he prompted O'Reilly to say who would win in a fight between him and his Fox News colleague Sean Hannity, O'Reilly demurred — and nearly upset the delicate balance of parody and reality.
"Hannity would kick my butt," said O'Reilly. "I'm effete. I'm not a tough guy. This is all an act."
Colbert retorted as though his mirror-image of O'Reilly had been broken: "If you're an act, then what am I?"
Once the show was over and O'Reilly had left, Colbert turned to the studio audience as he exited the stage and said, finally out of character: "He seems like a nice enough guy."
Man that must have been interesting. I'm sorry I missed it being a fan of both shows.

New ice cream named for Stephen Colbert
Stephen Colbert may have no taste for the truth, but he does have a sweet tooth. Ben & Jerry's has named a new ice cream in honor of the comedian: "Stephen Colbert's Americone Dream."
It's vanilla ice cream with fudge-covered waffle cone pieces and caramel.
Announcing the new flavor Wednesday, Ben & Jerry's called it: "The sweet taste of liberty in your mouth."
The Vermont-based ice-cream maker is known for naming its flavors after people such as Jerry Garcia, Wavy Gravy and the band Phish — which Colbert sees as a political bias.
"I'm not afraid to say it. Dessert has a well-known liberal agenda," Colbert said in a statement. "What I hope to do with this ice cream is bring some balance back to the freezer case."
Colbert, who spoofs flag-waving conservative pundits on his Comedy Central show, "The Colbert Report," is donating his proceeds to charity through the new Stephen Colbert Americone Dream Fund, which will distribute the money to various causes.
I liked the bit from last night in which he challenged democrats to prove that they weren't pussies by impeaching bush.
... and some people still don't realize he's satire.

that's weird that after all of his answers he does a quick rundown of who made his clothes.
the GQ story says something like Colbert for President on the cover. i know a guy who doesn't watch Colbert, saw the mag and said "wow, he's running for president now?" but he was actually dead serious. and this guy is usually pretty smart (thats why i talk to him).
and then it hit me... people like O'Reilly not 'getting' the Colbert character is entirely believable to me now.

this is a day late, but did anyone see his performance with alicia?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMYb8sq-jDU
it's been stuck in my head since...
A couple weeks ago Colbert mentioned my city Marquette, Michigan on his show. It was becaue we have Winter Olympic sessions going on with ice skaters. I guess he's been about that lately, but the whole city went nuts here. It was semi cool considering we're in the middle of nowhere and very far north.
he was on the cover of sports illustrated because of that.
plus his bit with alicia keyes was dope.
...GT why don't you just get some basic cable?
I do have basic cable and it's funny, I also have that copy of Sports Illustrated plus I watch his show sometimes, but I never got into any of the details of this and I looked at every article in that SI issue besides the one about him. I'll have to look further, that's all.
When he asked snoop dogg if dr. dre prescribed him his medical marijuana, i nearly lost it.
Since this is pretty much our de facto late night thread:
The CBS Television Network today announced that Stephen Colbert, the host, writer and executive producer of the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning "The Colbert Report," will succeed David Letterman as the host of "The Late Show."
http://variety.com/2014/tv/news/stephen-colbert-to-replace-david-letterman-1201155423/
having a rattled "gimme a sec" moment here. the big q is discussed in the article
QuoteWhen Colbert sits behind the desk of the CBS program, as he is set to do at a currently undetermined date in 2015, he will likely do it in unvarnished fashion, not as the right-wing caricature he plays in his current perch on Comedy Central. CBS said creative elements, producers and even the location of the show will be announced at a later date.
And yet, it is that inventiveness CBS is likely banking on to help it gain in the ongoing late-night wars.
Indeed, Colbert will be the Eye's entry into a race that has already started. Both ABC and NBC have already turned their latenight programming over to younger hosts – Jimmmy Kimmel for the Alphabet and Jimmy Fallon at the Peacock. Colbert will have to hit the ground running, mastering a new format while trying to maintain the current fan base that has made his "Colbert Report" a mainstay for the Viacom-owned network.

It would be interesting if he were to take his Colbert Report character forward into the new show, doubling down on the ego while completely dropping all of his political beliefs. It would take the joke to a whole new level to have him throw all that out the window and adopt a completely new, warped ethos when he moves on to serve new corporate masters, like so many real-life pundits before him.
Because he's never shown us the 'real' Colbert, he's in a very unique place do a full-on caricature of late night hosts and break open the format the way Letterman was doing back in his glory days. One thing I'd put money on is an extended pseudo-war between these two:
(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.channelguidemagblog.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2014%2F02%2Ffallon-colbert.jpg&hash=eb431fe52a17ba84281f19a2ccd0286cb0f28531)
^that's a personal-feeling-guess thought wired into multiple histories and potentials, related to ideas about form, illusion, subversion, etc
all into this today. strikes me as more interesting than "conan is funnier than leno" or "meyers is somehow different from fallon"

Since this is pretty much our de facto late night thread:
It isn't. (Re: Conan)
There are threads for every significant late night show.
I moved this news to the actual thread.
This is a terrible idea btw. Apart from the gimmick that his show thrives on, the format is completely different. He's a political commentator, Letterman doesn't really give a fuck (tho he clearly despised Bush) his commentary on world affairs has always been limited to special "serious" moments like post 9/11. Sure he interviews news anchors and sometimes politicians but his audience actually just wants stupid pet tricks.
It's a collision of worlds that will destroy the best parts of both.
The thing about Colbert is, he's not a political commentator at his core, he's an improv comic. The fact that he was so good at embodying the character of a political commentator doesn't mean he will then not be as good at this other thing.
I really hope he takes the opportunity to do something new with this tired format. Fallon does a lot of creative bits, but at it's core it's still the same damn show your grandparents watched.
If Colbert's Late Show is anything like this, America is in for a treat.
