ULTIMATE FILM FANATIC ON IFC BEGINNING JULY 9th 10:30pm E/P

"Film fans from across the country compete for the coveted title of Ultimate Film Fanatic. Competitions include tests of movie trivia, a debate round, and the "Obsessions War," a duel of personal memorabilia collections."

http://www.ifctv.com/uff/uff.html?referer=%2Ffanatic

The game is pretty cool too. Some of the questions were tough, but I think most of you guys here can handle it.

I think they're also looking for contestants for the next film fanatic show, so if anyone is interested in trying out, here's the link to the tour schedule:

man, I don't have enough memorabilia to be considered a fanatic.  the quiz was for like casual fanatics--absolutely no foreign, indie, or pre-1970 films.

The opening questions were pretty easy. That guy Steven could NOT debate worth a crap ("...and all those things."). And although I agreed with Jordan's debate about Kill Bill, that other guy's "Phantom of The Paradise" helmet easy beats out seeing a movie a day.

yeah!  god, besides the Jason X year i knew every single question on this show!  TOO EASY.  the guys woody allen book was cooler than the other guys picture and hte PotP helmet was definitely better than the other guys list.

if anyone else cares, i will be on the Philly show for about 2 minutes before getting my ass handed to me in the first round.  OUR questions got real hard, real fast, not that i could compete with these guys in the memorabilia round anyways.  (i'm casual obsessive, these guys are obsessive obsessives!)

Dates for UFF
NY 7/9
Phoenix 7/16
Detroit 7/23
Atlanta 7/30
Philly 8/6
LA 8/13
Denver 8/20
Finals 8/27

Yeah, I think the Jordan guy should have won with the Woody Allen book but they gave it to the other guy just to make the show a little more interesting. Then he won the final round just because he did better overall even though the helmet was way cooler.

In the debate round it's a lot easier to be the person saying you hated the movie because you can be more creative with insults instead of just standing there saying something's awesome like that one guy did.

And modernage, what was your question?

You wanna be the Ultimate Film Fanatic but you don't know the name of the song McDowell sings during the beating in "A Clockwork Orange?"

Once again, easy first round questions. The debates could have been much better, plus Chris should have won on the Stallone topic. And none of the collectables were that impressive.

I can't wait to hear mod-age's intro of himself and why he should win.

haha, mine sucks because the producers made me truncate it so it doesnt make any sense.  atleast i came up with my own though, unlike a bunch of the other contestants that came up with something that had to be 'jazzed up' to be funny by the producers.  i guess i should wait till it airs so you can try to guess which ones me instead of spoiling it now.

i missed this weeks episode so ill have to catch a rerun hopefully soon, and also the auditions to see if i made that show in some small snippet.

WOW. i cant believe you saw me.  i was in there for a fraction of a second when they were flipping past people, (although they did replay it several times).  and i was walking out for about 1/2 a second too, although i did see a few of the people from my show/auditions.

also saw the second episode rerun.  again, i'm shocked at how easy the questions were.  the only one i didnt know was the Wedding Singer tagline, although if i had a minute to think about it i probably would've gotten it (since you had unlimited time to answer questions).  i'm glad the guy who won, won.  he seemed old enough to be my dad so its very conceivable he had the most knowledge.  the guy who lost both debates got very flustered very quickly and would blank on all the names.

the only stuff i really have are signed things.  Magnolia, Boogie signed by PT.  Rushmore signed by Jason Schwartzman, Silence of the Lambs criterion signed by Demme, Evil Dead book of the dead signed by Bruce Campbell, etc. etc. but in the spirit of diversity i also brought my movie lists i've been going through the past year or so of the movies i need to see, and an early Batman (1989) script with robin in it (!)  so i brought a handful of that stuff since i think somebody else on another show might've had a similar evil dead or rushmore item so i had to bring backups.

Bad show for the women; all eliminated in round one (who knew a cinephile had no idea Clint Eastwood was famous for Dirty Harry). Some better debates this time. And I want that Evil Dead Book of the Dead!!! That easily beats working on a Spike Lee film as a peon runner. I'm convinced that in the Obsession War, NO ONE can win two in a row.

yeah, once again all the questions were incredibly easy, except for 'who was spike lee's cinematographer on she's gotta have it?', which i SHOULVE known cause i just read that chapter in Spike Mike... a week ago, but couldnt remember.  the guys cinema tatoo, lee internship and scarface shirt were weak as hell.  and mac, i think you're right.  it seems like the judges were probably told to let one person win one item and the other person had to win the second one so everyone could see their third items.

yeah, fake JB had no good items.  i cant believe his $130 purchase was his BIG number 3.  i thought the questions were much harder on this episode and for the first time playing along there was more than 1 i didnt know.  there was actually about a handful (class, killer pimp, swords name, etc.)  i'm now also convinced that whoever loses the first debate WILL lose the 2nd debate as well.  next week is my show, which will be notable if only for a WHY KEVIN SMITH SUCKS debate in front of Jason Mewes.

haha, yes my minute and a half of glory.  it was a thrill just to be on, and i'm so glad that my worst nightmare of missing the first question (or missing a question about a movie i liked) did NOT come true.  had i seen either 48 Hours or Down and Out In Beverly Hills i guess i would've gone a little farther, but i think the true fanatics made it to the final round anyways.  how did you picture me?

also, i totally forgot that we only got to see 2 of the 3 items on MY episode ! totally dispelling the rumors of the judges rigging it so we got to see them all.  (or perhaps the producers invented that rule after our episode).

Quote from: modageyeah, fake JB had no good items.

Mac, I'm surprised you would believe Jason Mewes assessment of why I purchased that box set. I bought it because I didn't want to pay 200-400 bucks for high-quality Hitchcock dvds after they went OOP, not making money, saving money. If I wanted to make money, why would I have removed the plastic? The fact that I didn't see the films was supposed to hint at my obsessiveness, but it did kinda come off wrong.

Modage, I thought my Star Wars collection was pretty cool. Too bad I'm half the age of all the other contestants, so I haven't had twenty years to accumulate a bunch of blowhard signed shit. Oh yeah, I don't have much money either. The Dalorean (sp) took a while to make, so that was a good item too. The Hitchcock set, however, was pretty shitty, the producers forced me to come up with a third thing, I didn't really have anything else.

I'm surprised y'all neglected to mention my awesome debate against Bill Paxton. Modage, did I meet you while we were in LA? I don't think I did, and I haven't seen your episode yet, but I want to see it.

Oh yeah, if you need further proof that I am 'fake JB':

If I remember correctly (I only saw the episode once and didn't know I would be tested on it), you said "to make a couple bucks" or something like that in your explaination. It wasn't because of Mewes's reason, you said it yourself.

I was totally against Paxton, though I did embellish in my hatred, because I thought Frailty was a badass movie. I wasn't gonna say that of course, I didn't want to give the other debator anything.

And Mac, I didn't say that, but that's ok. I guess it was a big deal to me to buy an expensive set, we can't all buy three or four every week.

It was like the Geritol episode this week.

Terrible, terrible debates. On the Coen Bros., they both seemed like they were just saying the same thing, with no one for or against. With "Lolita," they felt like they were just listing what they liked/disliked about it.

And I just learned that that Hitchcock book that I also own was rare.

yeah this was the worst episode ever.  the kid who won was pretty weak.  he knew that Mr. Pink, Orange etc. was from Reservoir Dogs, had 2 awful debates and a semi-rare book and a bunch of ticket stubs, PLEASE!  if THATS all it takes in the mountain region than crown me the champ.  the problem with the show in matching up by test scores is the last two people to go who got all the way through (almost) their catagory of animated films were the two who seemed MOST fanatic and most deserving of the final round, unfortunately since they both had to face off only one could go on.  and he had no public speaking skills so he didnt win the debate!  oh well, whatever.  knew all questions but blanked on watership down.

final episode last night was pretty bizarre.  i cant believe how easy the first round was compared to 'sudden death questions'.  i play that game whenever i get tired of 6 degrees.  someone names an actor and you go back and forth naming their films until someone runs out, if the other person can still name 1 more he wins, if not its a draw.  anyways, i cant believe  bill who beat me lost on HOUSESITTER!  its not even a good steve martin movie!  the peter fonda finale was also very strange, and i actually agreed with the other guys point and think that he should've won.  its one thing to just be fanatical about something, but its another thing when you're trying to work in the 'industry' i think.  you dont have to play sports to be a sports nut.  you shouldnt have to want to make movies to be the ultimate movie nerd.  so i think the other guy should've won, but thats just me.

I liked that round too. They should replace that with the obsession war. And I can't believe that guy that they keep promoting on the channel (Jordan) lost. I thought for sure he'd be in the final three.

No shit! I can't believe they didn't completely exhaust all the Scorsese films before moving onto Martin films.

Yeah, but that guy got completely defensive when the word 'geek' was used. That made him seem more of a movie 'snob' than movie "nerd". And I can't believe when asked about best restaurant scenes, The Godfather didn't spring to mind.

It came off way wrong. They repeated the episode and here's what you said:

Well, uh, a couple months ago, at the beginning of December, the Criterion Collection decided that they were gonna put out -- put a couple of titles, uh, out of print, and they're all these -- they're these Hitchcock movies that I never even seen before, but I knew that by them going out of print they would be, like...like, ten times the price in a couple years, so I decided to buy this $130 box set, and of cour -- so the minute I found out I called my mother and I was like, "Mom, I'm in college. I don't have any money. You have to buy this for me." So, she -- she bought it for me, and it's an unbelieveable set.

The way you said it, came off as a profit making.

on labor day i watched the marathon. i had seen all but three or four of the episodes.  i cant wait till the next season.  anyways, they kept showing the commercial with the guy who won. has anybody seen it? i am wondering if the films that are in the commercial are the ones he has chosen to show. curious. i havent heard of any of them except The Straight Story.

I think they are the ones he chose. Session 9 is one of them and I've been curious to see that.
But weren't they supposed to have an entire day? Now he only gets from 8pm to 6am. That's still pretty good, but it's no 24hrs. :?

no, it was only for a night, never a day.  i just watched session 9 on IFC this week.  it was okay/watchable but a little too familiar and not as scary as it could have been.

So Mac.

I realize it was wholly relevant and necessary for you to transcribe everything I said, especially since I had conceded that what I said came off poorly. Also, that reminds me, it's simply amazing that you must have recounted my speech practically verbatim from memory, without the aid of slowly, tediously, desperately pressing play, rewinding, listening, etc from a recording you might otherwise needed to have made. I need a job, as you recommend. Perhaps you can teach me this amazing trick of transcriptive memory and we can become the Amazing Macs (in the vein of Kreskin). Together, we can travel the world, and after viewing shows that were simply 'repeated', transcribe dialogue to those who give a shit.

Actually, I don't need a job, because I'm lucky (or rather smart enough/worked hard enough) to get a scholarship that warrants an allowance. Oops. And who wants to stop borrowing from mom? You act as if that's childish. Good thing these blue-moon dvd purchases aren't vital, or borrowing would be cumbersome.

Anyhow. Cinephile, I'll be your dominated love slave, if you pay me in boxsets (or boxsex, which sounds pretty kinky to me).

a student should not be paid money for making good grades in school by his parents.  a student is expected to make good grades which shouldnt  warrant monetary rewards from his/her parents.

My parents have never paid me for making good grades and I never said they did. But neon, does that come straight from that book?

And modage, ok, whatever you say. It's not going to stop until I ease up.

Would anyone have gotten the question right about the name of the rat/mouse in The Abyss?

I guess what I said came off poorly. I'll transcribe what I said in my head when I realized the show you were on was gonna air:

I don't have a photographic memory. I better tape this so I can see what  gamblor said, because I'm sure I wasn't mis-hearing things.

So, in conclusion: If you had a job, or if you're nice to mom, you too can buy a VCR.

It's called "respect".

so, after a redirect here it is for UFF2 the sequel:

shameless self promotion here, but just thought i would let everyone know that yours truly was on the season 2 audition special showing this week on ifc, and will be on an episode of the show coming up in January, it's the Northern California area, which is some region which I am not sure west coast or such. Anyway, in the audition special (if you watch) I am a blur during the people who have brought their stuff (I'm the one who talks about geek whiff)

Also they show me a couple of times on the show (my nametag reads "JASON" - that's right my real name is Jason Alexander and I am not the guy from Seinfeld and I didn't marry Brittany Spears.)

Anyway, in case you want to watch one of your own, there you are. Have at it.

so, my episode aired last night, I came in 2nd,, lost on the third item of the obsession war, ah well... anyway, if you want to see it's the WEST COAST episode, and I am the geek who doesn't win going by the name oh "jason" - shall I whine now about losing a point to a picture of cardbaord standees? Not even the actual standees in the flesh, but a picture! Gads! Ah well, Dean the winner was the nicest guy you'd ever meet and truly a film savant, and articulate beyond belief... hate him... No... No, at least I didn't get punked in the first round.

i watched the whole second season which wrapped last night.  i liked the guy who won, but 'legend' picks the winner was once again ridiculous.  especially since the only thing robert evans seemed to care about was how these two were going to break into the biz.  like, the show is about how much you love movies, not how much you want to make them.  they picked the guy who wanted to make them last season as the winner and not the guy who just loved them because he did.  but the guy who won was cool.  although, everyone on the second season had the insight of actually knowing how the game is played before they even auditioned, so it wasnt nearly as much of a shock as finding out minutes beforehand and thusly probably prepared them a lot more for the experience.  lots of the questions were very easy, a few were hard.  the format is still pretty stupid, they just cant wait to unload everyone in the first round as quickly as possible.  sudden death is not cool, especially when you're pitting the two best against each other when they should both be moving onto the next round if they were going against the lower scorers..... not that i'm bitter.
