Well, I actually just pulled a few of my favorites (and two that I think suck ass) out of thin air to get things started. That's why I'm looking to you guys for some suggestions.

Obviously we don't want to go overboard with too many directors, but a dozen or so biggies should be good. I am sure that within a few days we'll have a grip on who we need to initially add.

I was afraid Kelly wouldn't make the cut.

Donnie Darko is great but if you only want 12 or so directors he should be off the list.
Also I agree with The Coen Bros being a must

I agree, Lynch, the Coens, and no Kevin Smith or R.Kelly.

I would have Richard Linklater, but I may be alone.

Will there be a rotation?

Kubrick is gonna be evrywhere else like a rash anyway. Ooh, really excited to see how tiny tiny is...

Edit: ooh, fuck yeah Fincher of course.

Yah!...Todd Solondz definitely....i would also say Neil LaBute to go along with Solondz except I saw "posession"...It's tragic that one film can do such a thing to a director with so much potential.

I'm also going to have to second Truffaut...How about adding Akira Kurosawa as well!...and Jim Jarmusch!!!

No, I am not any of those things. His movies are just too cynical for me or something. I mean, I'm not saying the world is a bowl of cherries, it isn't by any mean, all I'm saying is...would it kill him to have at least one decent, respectable character in his movies? I can't relate to any of the characters in his movies. Every single one of them have these extremely dark secrets or taboo passions. That's just not how everybody in the world is man. Solondz needs to understand that no matter how much people made fun of him in high school, there are good people in the world. God knows I get made fun of in school, we all do. I'm not going to become a fucking cynic though, I know there are still cool people out there.

I'm all for giving him another chance. I've done that a lot. I'm always willing to do that but like you said, I'm definitely going to wait a few years till I give a Solondz film another shot.

Solondz reminds me of Harmony Korine in many ways, only he's a far better filmmaker.

I think they're both out to shock you with the truth.

The stuff in their films really does happen. Granted, you have to dig to find such characters, but these people do exist, and their lives can be truly shocking.

Everyone's entitled to their views, and that's cool, but I like Todd Solondz because he's just so damn disturbing.

Good point. I dont like Harmony Korine but I can see that both their intentions are to expose parts of people that havent really been explored on film.

I think Solondz is a good director, but not a great one thus far and doesnt deserve his own spot. I didnt like Happiness but probably because I was so disturbed by it, but it was a great movie. Like ebeaman, his movies make me sad in a way, but I think that is part of what they are supposed to do and he suceeds at it. I dont think I will ever see some of his movies again, at least for a long time because they are like Schindlers List; they are fantastic movies at making me feel depressed. You cant hate him just because he doesnt make you happy.

I can't hate them for making me feel depressed but I damn sure can hate them for making me feel one single fucking emotion out of them all. Why would I watch a depressing Solondz movie when I can watch a funny, sad, suspenseful, scary, poignant, hip PTA movie? That's what I'm talking about. It's pointless. The choice is easy. There are filmmakers that can take you through the full range of human emotions with one single film and then there are filmmakers like Todd Solondz or Michael Bay that couldn't give a shit about all the emotions but one.

No, but you said it is his ONLY ambition as though you had seen an interview where he said "as a filmmaker my master plan is to piss off ebeaman." Welcome to the Dollhouse was not full of characters with terrible and disturbing secrets. I don't know about where you live, but the characters in that movie were realistic, and if that makes me cynical then so be it.

On another note I, like Duck Sauce, believe Solondz is good but not category worthy.

And therein lies the problem...i've seen Happiness, left a real sour taste in my mouth, but it was an interesting movie...then i saw Storytelling and was convinced that he was being disturbing for the sake of being disturbing, and as much as I wanted to enjoy these movies, I didn't.  These movies are definitely meant to be darkly funny, and in certain cases they are (i.e the scene in Storytelling in the writing class when the students are criticizing the story that really happened, calling it racist and unbelievable), but altogether his movies are becoming much too formulaic, and still not very enjoyable.  His movies are disturbing because they present his characters in such an objective way.  Sure we see these characters in film, but they are usually portrayed as miserable wretches, and moviegoers are all but told what to think about them.  Solondz characters are never really portrayed this way...in the least, he is innovative and makes us think for ourselves, but has reached his limit with this type of movie. Good, certainly not great.

I know, at this point you don't even know what i'm getting at, it'll never happen again.

Disturbing, something that makes me feel upset, uncomfortable or offended. The entire pedophile thing creeped me out. I dont understand what you are trying to argue. I think Solondz is a good director, but I am too shaken up by his movies to like them. I think they are effective.

I agree that Solondz needs to head down a different path next time...Storytelling just didn't work. However, I think 'Happiness' is great, and 'Welcome To The Dollhouse' is almost as good. The great thing about 'Happiness,' and the truly toubling thing, is that he DOES give you opportunities to sympathize with these characters; whether you choose to or not is up to you, but what he did so brilliantly was not pass any sort of judgement on any character. It's disturbing as hell, and it does leave you feeling a little unpleasant, but it's still definitely a black comedy...there's an awful lot that is funny in it. In a bleak sort of way.

Oh come on tough guy, give me a fucking break. Yeah, I have a threshold for how fucked up the movies I watch are, big deal. I love black comedy, it's probably my favorite genre too. Happiness made me very uncomfortable. I have to agree with ebeaman.

However, I tend to like it when movies make me feel that way. I guess I'm sick like that.

Oddly, what I do not enjoy is the feeling of tension and stress that I often get from action movies or situation dramas and comedies. I even dislike The Flintstones because of this (seriously - can I say that?). You know, there's always a crisis, and even though you know Fred is going to get out of it, you're always wondering if he's REALLY going to make it through unscathed... So if you someone wants to call that wimpy, then OK. I just don't like the "on edge" feeling of wondering how someone's going to get out of a certain situation. But that's just how I am. Make me uncomfortable, but don't make me nervous.

Yes, that is right man. Can't fucking wait till April 4th! (the date my dumass town gets it). I'm going to see it 100 times and then see it backwards. It's my most anticipated film of 2003, definitely.

See, it's so perfect because I happen to be a fan of the director (david gordon green) that is giving Zooey Deschanel her first lead role by some great coincidence. That is the best coincidence ever. I get to watch Zooey Deschanel look beautiful for 90 minutes and it's going to be one of the best films of 2003 to top it off. That is a beautiful thing if I've ever heard of one.

Wasn't it!? I love that movie to death. It is so fucking cool. God, it is so cool that he made All the Real Girls. Seriously, the planets must have lined up or something, it is such a coincidence that he chose Zooey Deschanel for the leading role in his movie. It's like he read my mind, what a fucking genius the guy is. We have to make a board for him, he's the next great filmmaker.

Oh, don't even speak of such a thing. I will like it, I know I will. I mean, how could I not? I love David Gordon Green, I love Zooey, I love Paul Schneider, I love the trailer. I couldn't take that kind of disappointment. That would be the biggest disappointment I've ever experienced movie-wise.

Anyway, I've considered the bus idea. I just don't think I could ever get away with it. My mom would kill me.

Well, all I'm sayin' is...don't build it up that much for yourself. Consider the fact that it COULD be a sophomore slump film...

Then when you'll see it you'll like it a whole lot more.

I remember when I was about twelve I started taking my bike to the movies to see everything my parents normally wouldn't have let me see (starting with 'The Crow'). Once they realized that, they pretty much let me do whatever I wanted...but I wonder if they'd have let me go to NY when I was sixteen. Well, probably. They let my brother go to Ireland when he was seventeen.

So I went to open up my local paper this morning, and what do I find but a HUGE interview with David Gordon Green. It says ALL the Real Girls opens at a theater about twenty minutes from my house on Friday. I guess my town's not so bad after all. In the interview DGG makes fun of Macy Gray being in Spiderman and Fiona Apple's speech that one year at the MTV awards.

You shouldn't HATE anything. I personally prefer to use film, but I think DV is one of the best things to happen to indie filmmaking.

An actor whose name I won't mention (because it might discredit the following quote) said that aside from making it easier for poor filmmakers to get their movies made, DV filmmaking will force indies to be that much better, because there will be so many more being produced.

I agree completely.

Okay, Ethan Hawke said that. Chelsea Walls wasn't that good, but he's got the right idea about DV.
Title: New Dirs to add

thats true. of course film looks better, way better, but ignoring dv as a possible tool for filmmaking is foolish (im pretty sure i stole that line from someone).
Title: New Dirs to add
Post by: Ernie on February 23, 2003, 03:48:09 PM
I just use DV now because it's easy to edit on computers and it's cheaper than film. When I become a professional filmmaker, I'm never using DV, unless they find some way to make it look as good as film.

Damn, I wish I could read that David Gordon Green interview. There's gotta be a link somewhere.

am i the only one really likes the DV format?  i love the way it looks, i love how easy it is to use.  the only thing about DV i don't like is how certain movies like TADPOLE use it.  why was DV needed for this movie?  it seemed like they should have used on film.  TAPE, WAKING LIFE and CHELSEA WALLS (not so much CHELSEA WALLS) were really good DV films.

I agree completely, Rudieob, there are some movies where the DV is just gorgeous and the perfect medium. Aside from what you listed, I'll throw in 'Chuck & Buck' and 'Dancer In The Dark.' And two movies that came out this past summer, 'Sex & Lucia' and 'Lovely And Amazing' were both HD and they looked great.

We need to start a DV movies thread...

Quote from: GhostboyI agree that Solondz needs to head down a different path next time...

You be the judge:

Todd Solondz Helming Palindromes Next

Filmjerk.com has learned today that Mr. Solondz will commence shooting on July 7 in the New York/New Jersey area on his latest project, "Palindromes." A palindrome is a word, phrase, verse, or sentence that reads the same backward or forward. And judging from the myriad of palindromes listed at Palindrome fan site Mockok.com, most palindromes make little to no sense.

It's pretty well known Solondz often uses one film to "answer" the critics of his previous film. The storyline itself is being kept under wraps, but we can give you an idea of what portions of the film will be about, based on casting calls sent out today. "Palindromes" seems to revolve around the Aviva Victor, her family and their friends and neighbors. Aviva is thirteen, awkward and sensitive. Her mother Joyce is warm and loving, as is her father, Steve, a regular guy who does have a fierce temper from time to time.

Disabilities will play a factor in the story. In addition to casting a vision-impaired actress to play the seventeen-year-old Barbara, the production is looking for a number of children from seven to seventeen with disabilities of all kind, preferably with some kind of musical ability, although that ability or previous acting experience is not required. Additional characters include Mama Sunshine, a mid-western lady, warm, emotional, maternal and big-hearted, real salt of the earth type, Bo, Mama Sunshine's husband, mid western, the head of the family, rugged but kind-hearted, Judah, sixteen year old friend of Aviva's, luggish and serious, and Doctor Dan, another Midwesterner, a friendly family doctor who loves children and they love him, especially when he clowns around with them, very respected by his community.

Completely unimpressive... once you have a word and it's corresponding back-word, you just strategically place them to make it a palendrome.

When it's just random words like that, it's just someone who wasted way to much fucking time.

Michael Mann Directing Tonight, He Comes

According to Variety, Artisan Pictures has set Michael Mann to direct Tonight, He Comes, a drama that was scripted by Vincent Ngo and will be produced by Akiva Goldsman. Filming will start sometime in 2004.

The project is about a tortured superhero who crash-lands in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, and tries to revitalize himself by romancing an alluring housewife -- causing chaos in the city.

"I've always felt it was one of the best unmade scripts," said Goldsman, who'll produce under his Weed Road banner. "Anytime I've spoken to someone in a position of power, I've asked them to buy it."

"The character starts out potent and effective, and when the will to do what he's supposed to do wanes, he finds himself in this existential crisis," added the studio's Richard Saperstein.

Title: But back to the directors...

Some of my favorites have been mentioned- Paul Thomas Anderson, Alexander Payne, the always-controversial Todd Solondz (misanthropy is WAY too unpopular these days!)- but one who I think of as equally promising has not.

TODD HAYNES (http://us.imdb.com/Name?Haynes,+Todd)

I really, really, REALLY think Oliver Stone should be added. There's forums for directors like Darren Aronofsky and Wes Anderson who've made very few movies while Stone has made more than a dozen- and counting. I know there's a question of quality over quantity but I think all of Stone's films are great. The only one I haven't seen of his is Salvador and the only one I didn't care for was U-turn.

Just tell me these aren't GREAT movies:

Platoon

Born On The Fourth Of July

JFK

Nixon

Scarface (was written by him)

Wall Street

The Doors

Talk Radio

Natural Born Killers

Midnight Express (written by him)

Any Given Sunday

and other great other flicks, too.

He really needs to be added, IMO. Just my 2 1/2 cents.

Stone's great but I'm happy that two of my three favourite directors already are on the discussion boards: Wes Anderson and David Fincher. But my absolutely favourite directors has not been added to date: The incredible Peter Jackson.

O mem sahib, Bart.  Rabbi has memo.

And there are too many directors forums already, IMO.  It'd just be nice if the discussions in those forums were more active.

A lot of you are probably familiar with Alfred Hitchcock - word on the street is that he was good.

Quote from: _fpsI heard about this director named Hitchcock - the word on the street is he was good. Maybe he could get a board...
