c'mon, it was nowhere near that!  hell, knowing you saw IHH, it wasnt even the worst movie you've seen this month!  (i'm almost serious).  it was just okay. a great premise, but only a decent movie because of some bad acting and occasional ultra-obnoxious mtv style editing/camerawork.  i will agree that it does sort of fail to mount a lot of tension the way i think it should've, but there are some interesting twists and mystery along the way that i think make it worthwhile to anyone who likes the premise.  you have to consider this was made by first time filmmakers who were going to do this for like 500,000 until they showed the script to studios who insisted it was too good to be shot in their backyards and gave them some money to make.  cut them a little slack.  i'm not saying its a masterpiece or even that good, but its not a total piece of shit.
Christopher Nolan's directive was clear to everyone in the cast and crew: Use CGI only as a last resort.

Horror Movie 'Saw' Gives Blood as Well as It Takes

The makers of the new hit horror film "Saw" found a new way to market their gory film -- they let blood donors in for free.

Lions Gate Films said Friday a promotional offer in October of free screenings and T-shirts to people who donated blood paid off. Moviegoers gave 4,200 pints of blood -- enough to help save over 585 lives in the U.S. Pacific Northwest in two days, according to Sandi Sundquist Lesh, a spokeswoman for the American Red Cross .

"Saw," which was produced by Twisted Pictures and distributed by Lions Gate, revolves around a crazed killer who traps people who are then forced to harm themselves to escape.

The low-budget movie that lacked the marketing money a major studio might spend, surprised box office watchers during fright-filled Halloween weekend in the U.S. last week, raking in $18 million and reaching the No. 3 spot on box office charts.

I have a question I hope someone can answer. Why couldn't anyone catch anything in this movie?  Did anyone else notice how many times one character threw something else to another character, and the character who was supposed to catch just totally missed, or worse, made no effort at all and just let the given object hit the ground? I mean, even with fragile objects, like those casettes and stuff. Was this a directorial choice?

Lions Gate cuts to chase for 'Saw' video campaign

"Saw," the psychological thriller from Lions Gate Entertainment starring Cary Elwes, Danny Glover, Monica Potter and Leigh Whannel, is slated to hit video retail shelves Feb. 15, dead center in the middle of the post-holiday sales season. Lions Gate president Steve Beeks said that he plans to execute the studio's largest marketing campaign to date -- committing about $10 million to the "Saw" effort. The film, which cost less then $2 million to make, has generated about $53.2 million at the domestic boxoffice, according to Lions Gate and industry sources. "While the boxoffice success of a film like this has been phenomenal, the real story is how 'Saw' generated a tremendous amount of word-of-mouth promotion thanks to a smart and unique script for its genre," Beeks said.

I'm still trying to think of a genre that this film would be smart or unique in.

Slimepuppy

I just came back from seeing Saw (tee hee) at the cinema.

Not great, especially considering the potential inherent in the wonderfully fucked up premise. I was expecting Takashi Miike, and got... well... Final Destination 3, of sorts. It's takes perverse pleasure in its (pseudo)elaborate death scenes, most of which are, unfortunately discovered after the fact. Quite reminiscent of Seven, as someone else already pointed out. The gore was quite subdued in my opinion and did not live up to its "gory" reputation. Implied horror, yes. Very little actual red dye #2. And the damn trailer gives away pretty much all of the surprises in store with regards to how the victims end up killing themselves.

It's not as bad as people seem to be making out. I've seen Ankle Biters and Batman and Robin so nothing phases me.

And, hey, c'mon, it's a horror movie that's based on an original concept. Sure, it's a retreading of elements of other films (slightly unneccessary shout out to Suspiria, anyone?) but at least it's not a goddamn remake of yet another Asian horror film for a change. Or a sequel to an existing franchise. Or prequel.

We'll see what happens with Saw II and then Saw 0 and then Saw^3 and whatever the hell they decide to do with this.

As a little postscript, anyone else happy to be finally rid of Screamitis, whereby the film is constantly postmodern, self-reflexive, witty and just trying so hard to be "funny"?
