I still love PTA and PDL. This is a really fucking huge disappointment though. No commentary OR documentary!? Wow, that's not really cool at all. Fuck that. I'd give away the cool looking case/booklet and the deleted scenes for a commentary/documentary. Biggest disappointment I've had to put up with in a long time. I'll still buy it.

I know people are upset, but again, PTA doesn't think this films suits a documentary or commentary. He thinks you'll find that the entire DVD presentation "fits" the movie. He doesn't want things to take you out of the experience of the film. He compared the DVD to climbing inside the mind of Jeremy Blake and his artwork and having a look around.
Be glad, you have a director that cares about the quality of his DVD releases, respect his wish to not do a commentary, he's not obligated to do one and he's not trying to screw the fans........

I am still excited, and have faith that all the stuff included will be pretty high quality. I am most excited with the high bitrate transfer, I am tired of my mediocre quality PDL screener. Still behind the scenes would have been nice.

Some interviews or something would have been cool, like the ones from Cannes or something. But it doesn't matter. Its so cool how PTA like is in control of the DVD
i'm not disappointed at all. besides, even if there was a commentary track, i'd porbably only listen to it once. i think i've only heard my boogie nights commentary like twice. i like commentaries, but i don't consider them a "must". same thing goes for behind-the-scene docu's.

Hey, you buy the film for the film...extras are icing on the cake, but unnecessary in the end. I love commentaries and documentaries, but there are certain directors who I'd rather have leave their work a mystery. David Lynch to this day hasn't revealed how he made the baby in Eraserhead, and I think that makes the film that much more special. I applaud PTA for giving us a disc that will help us experience his movie, rather than deconstruct it. I loved all the commentaries on Hard Eight and Boogie Nights, but with PDL and Magnolia, I do believe they speak for themselves.
Can't wait.

The sound mix is gonna kick ass. Screw the woman who said it was too loud.
In some ways a comentary would have been nice because it connects the director with his fans, but what we have here is even better cause we know PTA had us in mind when making it.
This inside a Blake painitng, menu navigation sounds really cool too.
One thing. Please say there are some Jeremy Blake style 'coloured bars' to 'get those whites white and those blacks black' :wink:

I think PTA is a doll for what he's doing. Commentaries are overrated in my book, and PDL especially would be diminished by one, just like when I started thinking about fucking Freud last time and it made the whole film seem less.
I like deleted/alternate scenes and artwork, so I'm happy. :yabbse-lamp:
I'm very happy. A documentary would have been really nice, but then... I'm not sure "That Moment" added anything to Magnolia, and a commentary would probably be wrong in this situation... It was right for Sydney and BN, but PDL is more... mysterious... and should stay that way.
Yeah, I am less crushed by the no commentary now that I have slept on it. Magnolia and PDL are totally different types of movies than BN and Sydney, where there is really nothing for the viewer to figure out, especially on repeat viewings. But a behind the scenes would have been nice. Did they actually have any behind the scenes footage, and just chose not to use it? Or did they not even bother from the get go.
Commentaries and Documentaries are a double edged sword. They are good b/c you find out a lot of behind the scenes action. They are bad for the same reason, instead of watching the movie for the story, I am watching it for the construction of it. This isn't always a bad thing but once you watch a film once for the construction, it is difficult to get back to the story again.

I'll have the DVD back cover art, a special message from PTA about the release (it's fucking classic) and more up later tonight on the site..I can say this, I don't know what the two deleted sequences are, but I asked PTA about the salvation army scene and that's not one of them. He said the scene was nothing, nothing there and he knew right after he filmed it.......I expect more substance on those two included.....

I am psyched that it's finally coming out. I understand "no commentary" and "no documentary", so it's cool. I posted this information about the DVD release at Home Theater Forum and many people are, in my opnion overreacting to the no commentary and no documnetary. "Magnolia" didn't have a commentary and I didn't mind, and about the documentary, I only watched parts of it when I rented it about a month or two ago. So I'm not complaining about it.
BTW, I only saw the movie once in the theater and I can't remember where the Mattress Man commercial appeared in the film. Can somebody tell me where it appears in the film?

Oh yeah, I overlooked that the first time...that does sound kind of cool. If it's half as funny as the Frank TJ Mackey seminar thing on the Magnolia DVD, I'm can't wait to see it.
I've come to look forward to it a little more after reading the ptanderson.com bit about it today I gotta admit...the part about it supposedly being "bizzare and abstract", that sounds cool. I've been getting kinda sick of the lack of creativity in DVD's.
I'm looking forward to it a little bit more now. Sleeping on it really helped me too like Duck Sauce was saying. I like not really knowing what to expect with this one.
Oh, also...Newtron, I just saw your post just a second ago tough guy, get off my back man. I can be disappointed if I want. I'm not the only one that is. And I said I was still going to buy it...I would have bought it had it been barebones. I am much happier about it now. The ptanderson thing really cleared it up.

I just hope it doesn't look like the Magnolia DVD. Did anybody else think the higher bitrate made it look more... grainy? Everything is too fine and it looks weird on my TV.
Also, if he really wanted a commentary track he wouldn't have to forfeit much. A commentary track on a 90 minute movie is about 100 megs. 100 megs on a 9.4 gigabyte DVD isn't anything. Though, I didn't miss a commentary track on the Magnolia DVD, so I guess I won't miss much on this one... even if I was looking forward to hearing Paul and Adam rap for an hour and a half.
higher bitrate doesn't make things look grainier at all, it was probably just the film stock used. the magnolia transfer is actually quite flawless, i usually don't notice grain at all.
and note that DTS tracks take up a shiiitttlooaaadd of space on a dvd, not to mention the dolby 6.1 track that would probably take up twice as much. and if there was going to be any commentaries at all, you can bet there'd be more than one.
yeah, but I only watch magnolia when it's completely dark and on my big screen tv set, so everything is much more apparent.
i wish i had a dts system so i could at least enjoy the shiiiiitload of space being taken up.
dvdfile transfer review
Presented in anamorphic widescreen in the theatrical 2.40:1 theatrical aspect ratio, New Line has delivered another very fine transfer of potentially problematic material. Creating a slightly surreal, stylized look for the film, Director Of Photography John Elswit employed a variety of filters and processing tricks to give the film an oversaturated and highly contrasted appearance. For a video transfer to achieve such a delicate balance between such extremes in color and light, hours and hours of telecine tweaking are inevitably required. The transfer is up to the task, presenting a bold, clean and clear image.
The colors are vibrant and very rich, but yet stay just a millimeter below becoming oversaturated, and while contrast is high, shadow delineation surprisingly never drifts off into mushy nothingness. This film is both bright yet dark, with the deepest blacks you can imagine, yet contains many "hot spots" of slightly blown-out whites and edges. It is a tribute to New Line's work that there is no overemployment of edge enhancement nor "noise reduction" techniques to try and soften the image or make it more "normal" looking. While occasionally I spotted a few instances where textures and subtle visual information seemed to lose definition, this is a very solid transfer, with nary a compression artifact to be found. Elswit and Anderson took a risk here by trying to achieve a realistic yet stylized look, and this transfer delivers their vision quite beautifully.
I'm just saying to me it looks SLIGHTLY digitized (at least it's slight and not a complete piece of shit) and I wish I could have seen it in theaters.
