I didn't think too much of the trailer to be honest. If it weren't by Tarantino, I would have thought it was the sequel to Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever  :?

I think it's great...and i personally loved the 'forth film by quentin" thing...film buffs know that, and everyone else doesn't really care..it just seemed 'neat' to be succinct.  The movie itself should be outstanding if the script is any clue.  The scene where uma's in a coma sounds awesome, if he kept it in..oh..spoiler.

tarantinos. its even written on the title page of the script in a reportedly "childish scrawl."

I liked it a lot despite it looking kind of like Charlies Angels meets Crouching Tiger. I cant wait, I liked the music and I like seeing Tarantinos name. Many of you know my hatred towards CGI, and I hope that airplane improves. Why is it a year we have to wait again?

The cinematog. looks pretty amazing, the best of any Tarantino film to date. It's interesting that Tarantino hired Robert Richardson as DP, who is one of the 5 best DPs working today, but since Robert shot all of Oliver Stone's movies, including Natural Born Killers, a movie that Tarantino was very unhappy with.

Tarantino really is the only director who could pull off "the fourth film" thing. I can only imagine the PDL trailer, with the titlecard "The fourth film  by Paul Thomas Anderson" people would be going, "uhhh, ok" LOL

Shouldn't he be kind of embarassed that he has only made four films? I don't think its something to be proud of. Robert Altman has made some 75 films. Can't wait to see the trailer for The Company, his new film about ballet starring Neve Campell- "USA films presents... the 76th film....by Robert Altman"

I love that trailer - I saw it in front of Gangs and ran home and downloaded it...

I think a lot of people don't really get the feel for this film, which is why a lot of people will think it's stupid, but man oh man, I'm seein' the shit out of that movie.

Post by: buck swope on January 10, 2003, 01:24:39 AM
nothing about this trailer makes me want to see this movie

it only makes me want to pretend that this film isn't even happening

"the 4th film by Quentin Tarantino"..........

ok, well since Jackie Browne came out in 1997, Steven Soderbergh has directed 7, did you hear me: SEVEN films!!! (Out of Sight, The Limey, Erin Brokovich, Traffic, Ocean's 11, Full Frontal, Solaris)

shit, even i - tim day - have released more films in the last 5 years than Quentin

and it's not like with Kubrick where the film might actually be worth the wait

I still think Quentin can turn things around - i mean, if he can resurrect Travolta's career, he should be able to resurrect his own - but he needs to put this piece of shit behind him and get back to what got him on top.

Excellent point. What was it again? Who cares how many movies other directors made, its not a contest to direct as many as possible. Different people work at different paces. I like the "4th film" thing, 1. because It is kind of cocky, I like that from Tarantino and 2. It is a good marketing ploy to fill the theaters with people who thought Pulp Fiction was great but arent necesarily film buffs. And I am waiting on this movie like it was one of Kubricks, that is how much I like Tarantino.

From Entertainment Weekly:

When Quentin Tarantino, basking in the adulation of "Pulp Fiction," was asked what he would do next, the director quipped, "I'm gonna do a Terrence Malick."

"Kill Bill" is no spoof and those films you mentioned weren't exactly original to begin with; they ripped off what Hong Kong calls "wuxia" films like "Bride With White Hair" or "Once Upon A Time In China". QT knows his asian film history (see his interview on the "Iron Monkey" DVD; he knows his shit) and is influenced by the early films, not these knock-offs of late. Wire work didn't start with "Crouching Tiger..." or "The Matrix". The Warchowski Bros. saw these early films too.

The black mask reference is a nod to Bruce Lee's "Kato" from the "Green Hornet" and Uma's yellow outfit is a nod to his "Game Of Death."

Well, he's not all that wrong Mac...  (though SPOOF was probably the wrong word to use)
Those earlier films were actually made after The Killer, which was a John Woo film that was referenced in Jackie Brown.
Also, The Black Mask wasn't really a knock off of "Once Upon a Time in China" because they were both directed by Hark Tsui and the choreography (which is obviously very important in a kung-fu flick) was done by Woo-ping Yuen who also did the choreography for Crouching Tiger, The Matrix, and Kill Bill (oh yeah, and Iron Monkey)

I never said those films originated those styles, but some of the scenes in the Kill Bill trailer definitely mock the films I mentioned.  I realize Tarantino is knowledgeable about asian films...he's done quite a bit for the popularity of some of the lesser known ones.  But I don't think Tarantino is just borrowing those scenes or paying homage, because the similarities are too obvious and often in an over the top manner.

But it is just a trailer, and I haven't read anything else about the film (I'm not up on my Tarantino current events), so it's just a first impression I guess.

why don't you think it's a spoof (I don't mean in the sense of Space Balls)?

But that's what a spoof is, it's making fun of the original.  Kill Bill is more of a Tribute (as Cec said).  He holds those films in high regard and is not making fun of them.

spoof    ( P )
n.

1.   Nonsense; tomfoolery.
2.   A hoax.
3.   A gentle satirical imitation; a light parody.

Paying homage and mocking are two completley different things. Tarantinos love for the asian style movies is well known, I think he is doing it because he thinks they are good and interesting movies.

Interview w/ Tarantino, who has said Kill Bill is his greatest work.

"You have said KILL BILL would be your greatest work. How is it different from PULP FICTION?

[QT] It's so far the purest action or kung-fu I have made. The movie, with a story about a killer seeking revenge, got lots of action scenes. I I will make it to the coolest movie. Drive people crazy, and make people shaking. Fight scenes in the movie have strong flavor of Chinese kung-fu. This is my attempt of trying new film type, and I will take this opportunity to push me to a new era. In this movie, I will explore my inspiration as much as I like. Meanwhile, the biggest challenge is, I must see whether I can make it to a movie I have imaged and see how high can I reach.

"I heard to make those gangster movies look real, you have talked to criminals, drug addicts, and even gangsters. Is that true?"

[QT] Except filmmakers, I don't really know too many people. I create a character based on my personal experience. My gangsters are just characters. The so called realism is only referring to the dramatization I did to my movies.

Judging from dialogues and plots of your movies, (I say) you are a specialist of Western Pop Culture.

I love Pop Culture.

What made you decided to work with your Chinese partner, attracted by Chinese culture, or some other reason?

I have very good impression on China. You can say I came here because I was attracted by Chinese culture, but the main reason is there are many kung-fu scenes (in the movie). The Chinese are the authority of kung-fu films. They know how to use stuffs like wires to make exciting fight scenes, this is cool. I love Chinese style of jumping, punching and kicking.

yeah, I guess I didn't explain myself...I don't think Tarantino will simply make a Kung Pow movie, because he obviously respects the genre, but I agree with what bonanzataz said,

Quote from: bonanzataztaking these things and making fun of them a little while still saying they were badass.

it will be interesting to see how it turns out....I can't imagine Tarantino would make the fight scenes cheesy like Charlie's Angels, but some of the scenes in the trailer were pretty funny.  Hopefully this will be an entirely original take on the martial arts/hong kong genres.

BLACK LABEL GAMES AND QUENTIN TARANTINO PARTNER TO PRODUCE A "KILL BILL" VIDEO GAME

Miramax Films and Black Label Games Sign Co-Marketing Deal to Cross-Promote "Kill Bill" Franchise

Black Label Games has signed an agreement to license the interactive rights to Quentin Tarantino's ("Pulp Fiction," "Reservoir Dogs") upcoming Miramax film "Kill Bill."

Slated for theatrical release in October 2003, "Kill Bill," which is being produced by Lawrence Bender through their A Band Apart production company, will star Uma Thurman ("Pulp Fiction," "Beautiful Girls") and Lucy Liu ("Charlie's Angels," "Ally McBeal"). Black Label Games will develop, produce and publish at least one video game based on "Kill Bill" for next generation consoles and the PC, with Tarantino serving as creative consultant on the project and providing exclusive film footage for the game's development.

"The combination of our creative and technology teams coupled with Quentin's vision promises to deliver a high-quality interactive entertainment experience," said Jim Wilson, president of Black Label Games. "We are excited to extend this innovative franchise into an action game featuring a unique cast of female characters that will appeal to gamers everywhere."

About "Kill Bill"

Uma Thurman is going to "Kill Bill," in Quentin Tarantino's latest film about a former assassin betrayed by her boss Bill (David Carradine). Four years after surviving a bullet in the head, the bride (Thurman) emerges from a coma and swears revenge on her former master and his deadly squad of international assassins, played by Lucy Liu, Daryl Hannah, Vivica A. Fox and Michael Madsen.

First off...
The film reminded me of 'Fox Force 5' mentioned in Pulp Fiction.

Second off...
this is a teaser trailer..and in my experience, teaser trailers are often not good representations of the actual film.  Perhaps this teaser is supposed to hook a different audience.  The Tarantino fans will be there no matter what the teaser shows.

With that, I do agree that the teaser did turn me off a bit, but in Tarantino I trust.

i dont think we should expect a masterpiece, i think we should just expect what he has told us: A balls-to-the-wall action movie. It seems after this long break he's cleansing his pallete with this totally apeshit action movie. I read the 25,187 page version of the script, and it seems designed to just rock everyone's socks off. In twenty years, it might not be one of his more memorable films, I think Inglorious Bastards'll probably be better.

Im looking forward to it, though. Its gonna rock my socks off.

The guitarist of a Japanese group called HOTEI is credited for making the music for the Kill Bill trailer. Hotei Tomoyasu was the music supervisor for the soundtrack of the yakuza picture, "New Jingi Naki tatakai." He has worked with Michael Kamen, Brian Setzer, David Bowie, etc. and exchange. He has also participated in "Merry Axemas" which Steve Vai, and "Happy Xmas". Moreover, this guitarist has performed in the closing ceremony of the Atlanta Olympics.

The song is by Hotei Tomoyasu and the song is called Shin Jingi-Naki Tatakai!

Yuen Woo Ping - Same fight choreographer for both films. So stop with The Matrix bashing. The W Brothers and QT both have an appreciation for 'kung fu films of yore'. It's when films like Charlie's Angels and Scary Movie do the 'wirework crap' that you should complain.

I can confirm that.  Hehe, not that it matters.  I forget where it was that I saw it, but I'm thinking NBC or Comedy Central.  Or possibly ABC Family, though I doubt it.

Yeah, that's probably where I saw it, too.

And now that I think about it, wouldn't Tarantino make a great host for SNL?

EDIT: Just now, I saw a quick teaser TV spot during an episode of The Critic (on Comedy Central, of course).

I don't know if any one noticed this or if it maters but Uma does the same square hand motion when she is talking to Vernita Green that she did in PF.- The only scene that truly felt out of place. Probably nothing more than a coincidence. I doubt it has any intended QT meaning.  :?:  :?:

i thought it was a blatant, though non-gratuitous reference. hard to do properly.
