Calm yourself, Vol. 1 will surely be out before February when we get the rest of the movie.
Miramax Home Video has announced a February 3rd 2004 release for Quentin Tarantino's already classic Kill Bill Vol. 1. Full disc details are still forthcoming, but expect a retail price of $29.99

The thought of having my own copy of 'Kill Bill Vol 1' to watch in the comfort of home is very very groovy. Can't wait.

What a relief..... although I think we'll get a very lame DVD in February and only by the end of 2004 will we get a special edition DVD with both films or something.

yeah i think itll probably be just a bare bones edition..maybe it'll have the trailers, but i cant imagine anything special till both films are out for a while.....though, it will be fucking cool to see it as one movie, i hope they do that edition eventually

Fuck, I just creamed my pants.  But this also presents a dilemma: should I wait for the superfly-TNT-guns-of-the-navarone edition waaaaaay down the line, or buy on Feb 3rd?  I don't think I could stay sane knowing that Vol.1 is roaming out there and not in my DVD collection.

Life is hard.

I GOT IT!

A friend of mine that works at AMC just got the original Miramax version of it. Its recorded with some crappy definition so is not optimal and doesnt have all the special features, but the fact of just seeing Kill Bill at home in my 57" HDTV just made my week...

Its a good version to wait 2 more months until the official one comes out :)

He also got me Mystic River, Matrix Revolutions and Intolerable Cruelty

Additional Features  Interactive Menus, Original Theatrical Trailer, Scene Selection and Much More..

Does this bode good or bad? QT did say he was gonna do loads of features on Vol 1 & Vol 2, then do a special release with the whole movie and with completely different features. Apparently he want to show up the matrix which is fair enough. Please don't say this is a vanilla disk!!!! Oh well, I've pre-ordered in now anyway...  :)

DVD Answers reports:

Miramax have now provided us with the exclusive first details on Kill Bill: Volume One which is directed by movie legend Quentin Tarantino and stars the lovely Uma Thurman. The disc will indeed arrive on the 13th April as we had originally reported, and should set you back somewhere in the region of $29.99. I'm afraid the official press release we have received is a little vague in regard to the extra material. From what I can see, the only extra feature included will be a behind the scenes program hosted with director and writer Quentin Tarantino. Hopefully more features will be announced shortly! Here are the official disc specs that we have so far, and we'll bring you the artwork as soon as it becomes available to us:

2.35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen Presentation
English Dolby Digital 5.1 Track
English DTS 5.1 Surround Track
French Language Track
Behind the Scenes Program with Quentin Tarantino
English, Spanish Subtitles

wow, what a great Special Edition QT! i'm really glad we're waiting two more months for a bare bones edition, so you can rape us down the line with a souped up version (even though your producer, IE: the one watching all the money, insists that there is no special edition down the line!)

I think I don't care.  I'm not really looking forward to that or anything.  In recent days, my admiration of Tarantino has gone down a bit, and when coupled with other things, this news doesn't phase me.  It's a minor annoyance, but I don't crave the film, so m'eh, whatever.  You can, I can, say he's sold out.  Sour grapes.  I don't know.  I just wish Quentin would stop trying to be such a star, stop trying to make money (I mean, the guy's set for life), and just make films because he loves films.

I usually don't care TOO much about features, but it's just that the other loaded dvd's of QT's films are just so damn cool.  They are by far the best DVD's I own, as far as features go.  99% of the things on each dvd are worth watching.  Most dvd's, it's around the 70th percentile.

This site has it as a 2(one) Disc Special Edition. They cant need a whole extra disc for one featurette, even with DTS on the first. Meanwhile the Region 2 is still listed as a single disc on most other e-shops I use.

I had to have that film so damn bad i went and got a pirate version. its the first pirate I've paid for and I'm not proud of what I've done, but how could i possibly wait until April before seeing it again?

Its not bad either, picture is a little milky and the sound is only stereo but it will do until the real thing comes out.
The other snide DVDs I've seen have been so dark you cant tell what's going on and with so much bass in the sound you can't watch them

I also didn't see any funny dots popping up, the pirates caught on to that one pretty fast!

Cinephile is right........after  doing som einvestigating.......and using my own dvd menue experiences......if you notice carefully that at the bottom of the menue titled ...."Tarantino trailers" you will see the word "special features"......that leads one to believe if you click on that you  will be returned to the "special features" menue.......which will have more features......

so do they have the special features cinephile mentioned or are they bare?

i've really been wrestling with whether or not im going to buy it.  this was by FAR my favorite film of last year and i've been waiting forever to see it a 4th time, but just knowingly screwing myself over by forking over 20$ for a bare dvd when theyre already telling us theyre going to put out a good one later, REALLY REALLY REALLY is bugging the shit out of me.  like, just keep it quiet assholes.  ignorance is bliss.

hmmm, then maybe there's a chance amazon got em early and will send them out early........considering i have never pre-oredered anything before, do you generally get them earlier than the release date?  or no?  hmmm

when i preorder on amazon i usually only get them a day or two before the actual release date.

as for kill bill's dvd, the 5678's performances were pretty cool to have (it's just the performances that they give at the house of blue leaves only w/o cutting back to oren and uma) and the documentary is about 15 minutes long. a lot of it is filled up with clips from the movie and information we (as ridiculous kill bill nerds) should already have known. but it's great to see quentin talking and uma's there too and they show them filming a little bit in china. it's cool. i just got it b/c i felt bad about watching my bootleg so many times and b/c the super special edition i hear is just going to have the movie joined together as one big movie. this version will have its place in movie history, i figured i might as well.

Well, he kind of does.  From Dusk til Dawn and True Romance had commentaries.  Reservoir Dogs kind of has a commentary.  I know for Pulp Fiction he didn't want to talk about it anymore since he spent years answering people's questions about the film.  I don't know why there wasn't a commentary for Jackie Brown.

yeah the transfer looks pretty good, and there seems to have been some audio work done as well. certain effects i remember from the theater were either slightly altered or non-existant. And I am glad the subtitles for the characters run along the bottom of the screen instead of into the picture.

I read that Tarantino is going to splice the films together for a theatrical, as well as dvd, release. He is also talking about putting out 2 disc special editions for each film. And he mentioned that he'd like to put out a seperate release for a documentary. with the single disc versions that's 6 dvd releases for these 2 movies... no wonder Weinstein loves him so much, he's a whore.

Don't know if anyone has said this here, but I may as well.  At Best Buy, KILL BILL IS ONLY $9.99 when you buy another Tarantino flick.  That is, it's two for $20.  I highly recommend you check this out if you want Kill Bill and are lacking in the other Tarantino flicks milieu.  This is a great deal, considering how expensive Pulp Fiction, and especially Jackie Brown, were at one time.

Of course, I already have all three, so I'll still be waiting for the super-deluxe box set or whatever.

EDIT: Clarification, Mac told me that this is just for Kill Bill + Reservoir Dogs.  Two for $20.  Pulp and Jackie are on sale for $15.99, though, so still a good deal.

On mine, with a movie that is shot 2.35:1, there are still black bars on the top and bottom and the subtitles are in the black space (unless the transfer keeps them on-screen from the release print). When a film is shot 1.85:1 it fills the entire screen and the subtitles are superimposed over the film.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 Sells 2 Million Units on First Day
Source: Buena Vista Home Entertainment

On its first day of availability, Miramax Home Entertainment's Kill Bill Vol. 1 sold 2 million combined units on DVD and video in North America, it was announced today by Rick Sands, Miramax chief operating officer, and Bob Chapek, President of Buena Vista Home Entertainment. The 2 million units sold to date has Kill Bill Vol. 1 "chopping" up its competition. Kill Bill Vol. 2 opens in theaters nationwide on Friday.

Rick Sands, Miramax chief operating officer, said, "We are thrilled by the response from consumers to 'Kill Bill Vol. 1'. It is an extraordinary achievement and reaffirms that Quentin's films are true movie events. The strong sales confirm that the DVD is sought after not only by Quentin's loyal following, but also by a wide range of movie fans across the country."

"We couldn't be more excited about the success of 'Kill Bill Vol. 1' on DVD and video," said Bob Chapek, President of Buena Vista Home Entertainment. "Quentin Tarantino has created yet another amazing film that audiences are embracing. With these incredibly strong day one sales, consumers are signaling a strong debut for 'Kill Bill Vol. 2 in theatres this Friday."

''Kill Bill'' braces for $100 million week. Between the first-day DVD sales of 2 million for ''Vol. 1'' and the theatrical opening of ''Vol. 2,'' Tarantino's saga is poised to earn nine figures
Source: Entertainment Weekly

Revenge is sweet -- and lucrative. Between the release of ''Kill Bill -- Vol. 1'' on DVD earlier this week and the theatrical opening of ''Vol. 2'' on Friday, Quentin Tarantino's saga of the vengeful Bride (Uma Thurman) is poised to earn $100 million this week. Variety does the math: Tuesday saw ''Vol. 1'' sell an impressive 2 million DVDs -- that's $40 million right there. The trade paper expects total first-week sales and rentals of the video to reach at least $70 million, about what ''Vol. 1'' earned in theaters. Add to that an expected $30 million opening-weekend box office from ''Vol. 2,'' and you have a nine-figure week for Buena Vista Home Entertainment and Miramax. That's almost enough to make parent company Disney forget ''The Alamo.''

Video: How Does The Disc Look?

The film's theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1 is presented in anamorphic video. I'm a little disappointed with this presentation. On a large screen, the images are noticeably soft. Perhaps the video was low passed to reduce the bit budget; since so many scenes are quite frenetic, the film may have offered few opportunities for the MPEG-2 compression engine to find duplicate data. Modest halos are also present, but only intrude at high contrast boundaries; they appear to be of low amplitude and frequency. Tarantino seems to enjoy bright splashes of color, from a garish yellow and red truck to the neon lights of nighttime Tokyo. Such colors are vivid, noise free, and without a hint of smearing. Skin tones are very natural and the copious buckets of blood are convincingly red.  Nighttime scenes, such as the confrontation between The Bride and O-Ren Ishii, feature outstanding shadow detail. With the exception of the halos, I did not notice any compression artifacts.

Audio: How Does The Disc Sound?

There are two 5.1 tracks on this DVD: Dolby Digital and DTS. Each offers ingeniously active surround channels, from the splatter of blood on walls to a mosquito in flight. This is a soundtrack with wit. EX decoding will enhance the experience. Exceptionally deep bass may be heard mostly from the musical source elements. The fidelity of the sound effects varies. I suspect that Tarantino may have borrowed a few sounds from the older genre films he admires so much - that he begins the film with an old Shaw Scope title card and music is a broad hint - but those sound effects that were recorded specifically for the film are conveyed with crystal clarity. In fact, it's the sound of a Samurai sword slowly pulled from its sheath that provides the best clue that the DTS track has a more persuasive timbre. The sound can be described as the delicate scraping of a small bell, and that sound is more transparent in DTS. Dialog remains clear and clean throughout, but I do have a complaint about Thurman's voiceover. The equalization emphasizes the upper bass a bit too much, imparting an unpleasant boominess to her voice that destroys the illusion of in-the-room.

The alternative language track is in French. Subtitles are available in English dedicated to translating the spoken Japanese (the default), English for the hearing impaired, Spanish, Japanese, Korean and Traditional Chinese (but with no indication of which dialect). English Closed Captions are also included.

Yeah, I havent seen the DVD of Kill Bill Vol 1 yet, but I hope that they reinserted the color into the crazy 88 scene. In the theater I found that scene to be a severe detriment to the film as a whole because the abrupt shift to BW took me completely out of the movie. You cant have a series of scenes with hyper-saturated colors( Uma's lemon yellow suit, red red blood, blue green water, etc) then suddenly shift to BW! The BW seems almost invisible in contrast! Its like eating half a jar of
five-alarm salsa then eating saltine crackers. You wont be able to taste them. The scene is utter failure.

I just saw that scene in colour and it's -believe it or not- even more awesome! not only did they pu it in black an white, but they cut some great shots too. like the bride doing some crouching tiger-type flying, and the blood is as red as the devil himself, but one or two times they bleed water...  but it's very quick. the whole thing vibrates much much more!
