Title: Nominate - 2016 Xixax Awards
Post by: Jeremy Blackman on February 19, 2016, 11:09:16 AM
The Basics

This will be our third year using the simplified process:

So let's get started!

Post your nominations here, in any format or quantity you'd like. Doesn't matter. This is an informal process. You don't even need to read the rest of this post. Make several posts if you want to; post what you can think of now, and come back for more later.

Further Guidance

Is there an underrated film you're especially passionate about, or an incredible performance that no one is discussing? We're especially interested in those unusual choices to fill out categories. If you'd rather keep it private, you can PM me (http://xixax.com/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=21) nominations.

We have new TV categories this year! It's very exciting. Our one-hour/half-hour division is meant to roughly divide dramas from comedies. (Longer shows can go in one-hour.) For "Best TV Performance," simply nominate an actor in a thing (not a specific scene or episode). For Best TV Episode, we do want to get more specific. If you're not sure if a TV show is eligible, ask here; but we're going by common sense rules, i.e. did it mostly air in 2015.

This will be our second year with "Most Disappointing Film." Remember, it's not Worst Film (that's gone). What were you genuinely disappointed by in 2015? What was supposed to be good or great but just wasn't? This is for the heartbreakers. (For example, Nymphomaniac won last year.)

Here are the categories. Obviously, suggest nominations for whatever you want. One, two, or all of them. If you're not sure which category a performance belongs in, don't worry about it.

Do we want The Lobster to be eligible? (It hasn't gotten a U.S. release yet, right?) I'd be fine with it. Might be tough to remember it in a year.

I guess no need to repeat things that are already nominated? Or do we want to start pushing favorites?

I have too many in the Disappointing section...

Best Film - The Big Short, Jauja (I had to)

Best Director - Damian Szifron, Wild Tales

Repeating and/or pushing is good. Gives us a better idea of what people like. If there's a consensus on something, it'll be nominated for sure.

I could've sworn that was Kristen Wiig ( in a wig )

I really didn't see enough movies last year to give everything it's due respect, but I will nominate according to what I have seen and liked

Best Film

The Hateful Eight

after 3 viewings it only gets more interesting and complex. I've developed a liking for every character despite their brutality and racism, it's probably the most I've ever discussed a QT film with anyone after viewing.

Might as well put this down for Cinematography, Director, Screenplay, Score, Female Performance, and Male Performance ( Sammy Jack ) too.

The End Of The Tour

An unexpected gem of a film. I haven't related to anyone onscreen as much as I did to Jason Segel's depiction of David Foster Wallace in years. A very low key conversational epic that I will revisit often.

Best Male Performance

Christian Bale, 'The Big Short'

Jason Segel, 'The End of The Tour'

Best Supporting Male Performance

Walton Goggins 'The Hateful Eight'

Ex Machina for everything.

Inside Out for stuff.

I've got more stuff on my "too see" list than I've actually seen.

TV-wise, are we counting Black Mirror for anything in 2015? The Christmas special?

Since it debuted on Netflix in 2015, I'll say "White Christmas" qualifies for Best TV Episode and Best TV Performance. Plus, it's a Netflix show going forward, so that makes sense.

so Chi-Raq was good, eh? I was looking forward to it, thinking it was a documentary about the gun violence there. When I found out it was a straight narrative I lost interest, haven't seen a Spike flick in years.. I guess it's on Amazon Prime
Title: Re: Nominate - 2016 Xixax Awards
Post by: matt35mm on February 26, 2016, 01:04:02 PM
It was definitely divisive, so I can't tell if you if will think it's good. But I responded to its boldness, and nobody directs like Spike Lee. I loved the language (it's based on a Greek play, and it's mixing that tradition with rap tradition, so people speak in rhymed verse). I thought it was very funny. It completely embraces the idea that you can point to something true via bombastic ridiculousness--some people have just gotten hung up on the ridiculousness, but I was with it.

I wouldn't say that "straight narrative" is a good description. It has the quality of a musical comedy/tragedy (it aggressively bounces back and forth between the two). I think it's daringly experimental.

Worth the watch if you have Amazon Prime, for sure.

Cool. This is why these awards are so important, especially in the midst of all this oscar hubbub going on... It's good for all of us with these shared sensibilities to gage 'what was actually worth seeing last year?' 'Bridge Of Spies' is a film I would've totally overlooked as boring trash if Wilder didn't nominate it so much...Then again, our tastes ARE much different. I like having the opportunity to push something that I think "This deserves an Oscar" knowing that it never will win or would in a million years!
Title: Re: Nominate - 2016 Xixax Awards
Post by: jenkins on February 26, 2016, 01:46:10 PM
props to jb for putting the awards together. again! while others let their interests sway, jb stays rooted to the cause of xixax from a practical and forward-moving perspective. so thanks for keeping the awards and xixax together jb. per the laws of art, right when i look at this it has meaning for me too.

and sometimes directly, for example (more) thanks jb, for the Jude Swanberg reality from last year. keeping the eye on the future here at Xixax. i'd push for Tangerine and Sean Baker but first of all i know -- i'm guessing -- this movie is in fact "clouded" by topics such as its iphones and transactors, because i really think it's a beautiful movie right there on its own as a movie. but i won't push for it because there i'd be in the corner.

i'd like to push for Most Disappointing TV in the future, which'll help me decide what not to watch when i take adventures into tv land, and i wanna only hear some sass. i'll have no idea who would win but i can't wait to hear about it.

getting to politics, Carol is my film i'll click every time i see it. tastes are congealing around this movie, it's this year's Inside Llewyn Davis at Xixax to me, and i agree with all nominations. any nomination for Carol in any category is what i'll most likely click, when i guess. based on last year's list, for Redux, IV should drop the mic but it is that some people dropped IV. GBH instead? mystery.

for solidarity's sake, I was totally going to suggest Tangerine for Cinematography but when I google imaged it didn't see anything worthy of that nomination. By all means, it should be pushed. Idk how, but it should!

This description makes it sound like Bamboozled, which I think is under the radar one of Spike Lee's best films, so I'm intrigued now.

After taking a closer look at the nominations, we need more in these categories:

Best Debut Film
Best Documentary
Best Trailer
Best Film Poster
Best Film of 2014 - Redux

Otherwise, we pretty much have an avalanche of variety. For example, there were 26 different titles nominated for Best Film. Crazy.

Actual last call for poster!

We're skipping the trailer category this time. Unless people feel passionate enough to nominate a few over the weekend.

Voting will start next week.

That looks like the cover of Christopher Pike book I would've read when I was 12. I love it
