you know when a movie comes out and it has a really cool poster? and then the video/dvd comes out and its some crappy stills from the movie badly photoshopped together, usually of big stars heads? (the Out Of Sight video comes to mind as a particularly apalling example.)
what are some of the worst video covers? feel free to post pictures to compare.
apologies if this has been talked to death, but its something i really really hate.

However, sometimes they make an improvement with the DVD.

I cant be bothered thinking of any at the moment but I'm sure sick of seeing Eberts and Roeper's 'Two Thumbs Up' on covers. It doesn't mean shit. Especially when excellent films have one stamped on their cover (e.g. 25th Hour) when films like 'The Mexican' do too.

ARRRGGGHHH! That deserves SO much better.
Covers blazened with awards really piss me off. I cant understand it from a marketting POV either. Surely those who give a crap about what awards a film has won etc, dont need a cover to tell them about it.

I actually think they're trying to sell people who don't go to the movies and haven't even heard of most of them. I think the marketing people may divide markets into "moviegoers" and "home movie viewers," and they obviously don't think much of the home movie viewers' ability to think for themselves. They hope that when a dumb passerby sees a DVD cover screaming "awards! thumbs up!" that'll bludgeon them into buying/renting it.

thank god PDL wasn't nominated for any Oscars.
I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate when that stuff happens. Out of Sight sticks out the most for me as well. that was such a cool poster.
MONSTERS BALL! yes. i forgot about that one. in college i actually did a 25 minute speech about how badly bastardizing home video art bugged me and monsters ball was a prime example. its not that i was that fond of the poster, but what they are essentially doing here is tricking joe average into renting movie with halle berry "cause shes hot". what i especially like is how her haircut is the one she wears in real life and doesent resemble in the slightest the one she wore in the movie and how she doesnt look a bit like her character.

The Hours cover came first. It comes with a ticket to the sequel, 2 Hours 2 Furious, starring Meryl Streep and Ludacris.
i just saw an interview with the director of 2 fast 2 furious, the interviewer asked him what kind of an influence it is that they're making something illegal look so cool, and if they thought about it whilst filming
he looked stoned out of his mind and said that while they were filming, he pretty much said his only desire for it to look cool, and then he just laughed for about 10 seconds

i think i'm going to have to blind buy this "tricked out" edition, considering i'm such a big fan of xXx and all.
EDIT: Just to let everybody know... Ravi is fucking awesome.
John Singleton was never that great a filmmaker in the first place. I always thought Boyz N the Hood and Higher Learning were both steaming piles of crap. Manipulative, racist, and wanting to say something of importance but not really knowing how. The man gives good black filmmakers like Spike Lee a bad name.

Well, only if you think that's their one distinguishing feature. I don't put them into the same category just 'cos they're black, just like Todd Haynes and Gregg Araki aren't really comparable just 'cos they're both gay.

nah. i loved boyz in the hood.
john singleton has been such a huge inspiration, or encouragement rather on my own film career. i think about him a lot, especially when im all down and depressed about making movies and whatnot. it's like, okay, this dude not only wrote and directed a movie at my age but even was nominated for an oscar! so it is possible. but to see this 2 fast 2 furious racing honda civic shit, it's kinda sad. its one thing if a director has a long list of winners in his filmography and just wants to take a break and do something fun I guess. Who knows.
Quote from: PQuote from: godardianjust like Todd Haynes and Gregg Araki aren't really comparable just 'cos they're both gay.

Right, but that has nothing to do with what I said. The race of Spike Lee and John Singleton is not their one distinguishing feature, nor is the sexual orientation of gay people theirs. You could call Spike Lee and John Singleton both "black directors" without saying much about them or their work; same for Haynes and Araki. What I'm saying is that it's reductive and not really very descriptive to make these distinctions without expanding or qualifying them. I think it's wrong to say that John Singleton makes Spike Lee look bad just because they're both black, just like it would be wrong to say Gregg Araki makes Todd Haynes look bad because they're both gay. That's a simplistic way to think.
Just speaking up against reductiveness, here, which should've been perfectly clear. Your post was a little defensive. I'm not sure what was meant by it.
Quote from: godardianI think it's wrong to say that John Singleton makes Spike Lee look bad just because they're both black,
i agree with that.
i think what i was trying to say, maybe irrelevantly, is that black directors hav more blackness in their films than gay directors hav gayness. and that there is more depth to being black than to being gay.
Quote from: PQuote from: godardianI think it's wrong to say that John Singleton makes Spike Lee look bad just because they're both black,

They're two quite separate histories of oppression (unless you're both black and gay), and I agree that black people have historically have had much more direct and brutal oppression than gay people have. Sexuality is much more easily denied and hidden (if you're forced to) than ethnicity is. But I think the degree of blackness or gayness
in the films of a black or gay director has everything to do with the individual person. There was less blackness in
From Hell than there was gayness in
Far from Heaven, for example.
I just hate putting people in little groups. It's presumptuous at best. I like much of Spike Lee, am not terribly familiar with John Singleton, like some of what I've seen of the Hughes brothers, like most of Todd Haynes, can't stand Gregg Araki, and I'd like to think none of those opinions are based on characteristics like race and sexuality that have little to do with talent and flair for filmmaking.
Quote from: godardianQuote from: OnomatopoeiaThe man gives good black filmmakers like Spike Lee a bad name.

The difference here is Todd Haynes and Spike Lee are brilliant. John Singleton is not. I don't know about Gregg Araki. And it's interesting that Haynes is gay. I didn't know that until you said it, but I've noticed that the way he treats women in his films is always more noteworthy than most other directors, just like Altman and Anderson. There are a lot of complaints about misogyny in films, but these three will never be guilty of it.
The problem I have with Singleton is he makes "black films." Films that try to make you feel sorry for black people, because of how the white man has oppressed him; films with unrealistic characters who act in unrealistic ways. And any film that fades in to a Stop sign after reeling off statistics on violence you know is going to be a horrible, pretentious one.
Lee makes "people films;" films that everyone can relate to. He has one blemish I can find on his record: the horrible, racist
Malcom X, glorifying one of the most racist men in history. I often shudder to think what would happen if Farrakhan gets gunned down. We'd be subjected to
Malcolm X II or something. Other than that, he has a great track record.
The distinguishing features of Lee and Singleton, besides race, are the films they make and the quality thereof. Lee makes brilliant films. Singleton does not.

have u even seen boyz in the hood? i think ur missing the point, for the film is less about how the white community has oppressed the black ppl rather about how black ppl are oppressing themselves. it's about this civil war that takes place in the black ghettos. remember, in the movie all the harassment the blacks get from the police is from other black cops. one scene in particular, the white cop is more passive and the black cop is more aggressive towards them. i believe its the scene with larence fishburne after his house gets broken into, i forgot cuz i haven't seen the movie in a while.
and please explain to me how that stop sign fade-in is pretentious, a term that is so loosely thrown around on this board that it has lost all meaning whatsoever. maybe its not subtle, which i'm guessing is why u have a problem with it. who cares about being subtle though, sometimes a lack of subtlety can provide for a more powerful moment.

Reefer Madness had a cover that made me expect more. I wanted to see the insane drug abusers, but instead you see some guy's face in a small square. So very uneventful. *sigh*
I agree with just about all of those. There are some really great posters out there that should have been on the video case. But no, I don't understand it. For some reason, they insist on having the potential drained out.

How's the film? I'm a huge VU/Nico fan (not to mention Warhol). I've read "Songs They Never Play On The Radio" (may not be exact title), the bio written by her keyboard guy from the 1970s... what a strange life she had.

ignoring the fact that i can't even recognize the girl as nicole kidman on the cover, the designer chose a bad still of sean penn running, tried to fit in as many interesting things as possible (explosions, helicopters), tried to make it work in an orange/blue colour scheme and then slaps on the word 'interpreter' in giant red capital letters, conflicting with everything else in the design. there is absolutely no focal point and no consistency

The hand pointing to the clock... is that really necessary?
At least with the original poster, Bill Murray is only seen in the clock. We get it; he's stuck in time. From this cover, we're made to believe that the movie is about Bill Murray playing a narcissistic clockmaker who obsessively points out to everyone that his clocks are a metaphor for his feelings about getting older. He is both held hostage by time and running out of it too quickly. Andie MacDowell, as we understand from her look of enticement towards his receding hairline, is clearly the only one who gets him. They fall in love and he dies unexpectedly at the exact same time that his great grandfather's pocket watch, which has miraculously never needed to be wound in 100 years, finally stops running.
They should have just changed the title to Clockblocking while they were at it.
I hate getting Clockblocked. I usually ask the prostitute up front if this is going to be a problem.
looks like bill murray's right eyebrow is going awol.

The actual design is middling, but the banner with Seinfeld's face in it makes it worse.
Only augmented by the Gene Shalit quote.
Seinfeld peek-a-boo!
Actually, that shot makes it look like he's trying out for the intro to The Brady Bunch. Or possibly he's looking into a second career as the top middle square on Hollywood Squares.

It's essentially the same as the original poster. After seeing this, I realized the original poster SUCKS and does nothing for the original movie's beautiful photography.
Also: can we please shoot whoever made everyone put their BluRay discs in these ugly blue cases? Talk about uncollectable art. It's BluRay. We get it. We don't need to have the branding invade our brains every time we look at the disc.
Finally, why are BOTH of the quotes on the front cover basically saying the exact same thing? There's tons more to praise about the film, but we need a repetative "Seductive and Funny!" quote?
Oh and actually one more thing. Cruz is up for an Oscar. Anyone want to guess what the redesigned cover will look like?

That Minority Report art is BRUTAL. Why not stick with the poster?
I think the marketing people think that people have forgotten about movies when they have to re-release them on dvd or blu-ray and think the only way to sell it is with the star's face. Especially brutal for a Spielberg movie.

God, that's hideous. If you're going to put a giant fucking face on a cover, at least make it look appealing instead of inspiring screams of "OMG GIANT GLOWING TOM CRUISE HEAD IS ATTACKING!"
Spielberg don't give a fuck.

You know you ruined the DVD cover when the size of the face of the star is crunching the available space for the title of the film.

what can you say when you come up against this dvd cover while looking for movies to buy download
didn't know exactly where to put this:
"These movie posters were all created by artists in Ghana to promote traveling movie shows and sell tickets to bootleg screenings of various western and local movies. These posters range from quirky recreations of the original movies to WTF inducing paintings with imagery completely unrelated to the original content."

I guess that's supposed to be Kodak red and yellow, but its still ugly.
Well I'm glad that Sharon Knolle of AOL Moviefone loved it so much. Also, yes, that's ugly as fuck.
GIANT FUCKING TEXT!

If it was textured or distressed or something, not just these crisp blocks of primary color, and they lost the cop-out photo down below, it would be a great cover. But it's not, and they didn't, so it isn't.
Tiny Furniture, giant fucking face (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=1180.0).

Michael J. Fox's image is blurry for some reason.
Damn Parkinson's, impossible to keep focus.
I was trying to be tasteful.

Not the WORST but considering all the posters for it were amazing, this doesn't live up at all.

Haha, I love the bottom left and bottom right images. They ran out of cast members.
"New Years Eve", starring Aston Kutcher, Sarah Jessica Parker, Robert DeNiro, two glasses of champagne, and a stock photo of an embracing couple!
Wtf is Eddie Vedder doing in that movie?
...Oops that's Ashton Kutcher.
What is this shit?

That is f'n awesome.
I didn't know the Hallmark Channel made Days of Heaven.
If it wasn't for the numbers at the bottom of the covers I would have no idea what order these go in.
