Tool - 10,000 Days

What's interesting is that every one of these is what I'd consider somewhat of a lesser album from each artist.  2006 has not been a banner year for me discovering new talent.

Also, it's been seven whole months without a new Ryan Adams album, and I'm starting to freak out a little.

man, I'm just not impressed with the gnarls barkley album.  I love both ceelo, especially when goodie mobb teamed up with outkast for Dungeon Family, and Danger Mouse, but the new album just sounds so flat for me.  I don't understand how it can be considered innovative soul when there is nothing that separates it from a mountain of soul music decades ago, aside from maybe recording techniques, and I don't understand how by any standard, it can be considered interesting.  it's not bad music, but it's bland music.  I think more than anything it shows how desperately the world needs the return of funk and soul.  we still await the glorious return, but gnarls just ain't good enough.
seu jorge, make a third album.

My top 10 would look like this... I'm sure I'll revamp it, so I'll add pictures later.

10 - Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Your Bones

9 - Flaming Lips - At War With The Mystics

8 - Belle & Sebastian - The Life Pursuit

7 - Sufjan Stevens - Avalanche

6 - Regina Spektor - Begin To Hope

5 - The Sound of Animals Fighting - Lover, the Lord Has Left Us

4 - Mars Volta - Amputechture

3 - Murder By Death - In Bocca al Lupo

2 - Thom Yorke - The Eraser

1 - Tool - 10,000 Days

Hm... I like the albums, but I know this is going to get skewed later on.

Anyway, there are a few albums out this year where I like one song or two songs or maybe even three. Those are:

Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped (Do You Belive in Rapture)
Sunset Rubdown - Shut Up I Am Dreaming (title track)
Sufjan Stevens - The Avalanche (Springfield)
Mogwai - Mr. Beast (Acid Food)
Drive-By Truckers - (Daylight)

There are a couple that I like but doubt I'll listen to much after the next couple of months. Those are:

The Pipettes - We Are the Pipettes
Loose Fur - Born Again in the USA
Mates of State - Bring it Back
Belle & Sebastian - The Life Pursuit

And a couple that I like a lot and figure I'll be listening to for a good while. Those are:

Band of Horses - Everything All the Time
M. Ward - Post-War

So I guess I'm not a huge fan of the stuff that's come out so far. But who knows! Jason Molina (Songs:Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. guy) has fucking six albums planned for release here soon, the Mountain Goats have a new one out in a month or whatever, Akron/Family's got one coming up, and maybe Ryan Adams will lose him mind and release eight albums in the month of October and I'll like two of'em.

Gnarls doesn't break any new ground but it is fun to listen to, in that Gorillaz sort of way.  It's in their power to turn out an amazing second album.  As far as it just being a harmless fun party album, it serves its purpose, but they're by no means the second coming.  But compared to the sorry state of blander yet more popular music that passes for funk or soul these days (Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Ashanti, Usher, etc... PRINCE can't even turn out a decent album anymore), Gnarls does stand out.

I think it's pretty weak as a party album.  gorillaz is a little more interesting.  but with the list of the names you've mentioned--they're all a bit more entertaining than the new gnarls barkley album--I heard the show is something though, with cee lo working his charm and a chamber ensemble backing him up.  I would not mind seeing them live.  but back to the guys you've mentioned--alicia keys is a way better musician with catchier songs (and her "you don't have to call" is firmly in the vein of gnarls barkley in that they're both kinda blatant about sounding 70s.  usher can dance.  and beyonce--holy shit have you heard her new single with jay-Z?  Crazy Right Now was such a great song and Deja Vu is an even hotter jam.  I know it's probably the only song on the album that'll sound like that, but that jam kinda kicks like incredible ass.)

for the record, i agree with pete on everything he said, especially alicia keys. gnarls b was cool the first couple times i heard it, but in the end it made no lasting impression other than "this would be a good time to play solo cee-lo. or dungeon family. or goodie mob. or pussycat dolls."

what do you guys like about this?? with the exception of three, maybe four decent tracks, i'd say the overall suck of this album cements it firmly as this year's Extraordinary Machine.

what is the overall suck of this album? beth gets better every time she puts out a record. for me, it's all about the voice, that beautiful voice! and it's better then ever on this album. "a place inside" was the track that won me over. it reminds me of a spiritualized track the way it builds to the climax. and i'm sick of everybody sucking  jim o'rourke's dick. i don't think he made much of a difference on this album, and as soon as he left sonic youth, they made one of the best albums of their career.

i would rather listen to this then the underwhelming thom yorke solo album

"Comfort of Strangers" doesn't have as many individual songs that stand out as Beth's previous stuff does, but it's a great album to put on in an empty room and let it wash over you.  Like meatwad says, it's all about the voice.

she sounds bored, especially compared to the passionate way she sang on her previous albums. that was beth's specialty, singing passionately without overdoing it. her voice is beautiful but you wouldn't know it listening to a track like Rectify. like i said, there's about three good songs on there (Heart of Soul is pretty good, especially when she says "put a little love in your heaaaaart") but it's really nothing special. and i don't know how you can say it's better than Central Reservation or Trailer Park. the overall suck doesn't stop at her bored vocals, though. the tracks sound like shit too. seriously dude, Rectify is torture.

another good singer whose potential was stifled this year by crap production and boring studio performances was KT Tunstall. her album only had one great song, and i'd rather listen to that one song than any of the ones on Comfort of Snoozing.

Granted, it's not half the album Central Reservation is, but this year, I've been so underwhelmed by all the new music I've been hearing, even a half-hearted effort from a really great artist is good enough to be on my Best Of list.

I've been really liking:

RHCP - Stadium Arcadium (check Pitchfork for a terrible article on how bad it is)
Muse - Blackholes and Revelations (terrible title, but nice departure from previous albums)
The Mars Volta - Amputechture
Tool - 10,000 Days
The Strokes - First Impressions of Earth
Spank Rock - YoYoYoYoYo

Still have to listen to Thom Yorke, Camera Obscura, Mogwai, TV on the Radio, and Eagles of Death Metal.

2006 - 10 Months In

I'm gonna assume that Of Montreal will push the release date of their disc up a little but, considering its due in January and its already out.  With that being said:

1. Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?
2. Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
3. Sunset Rubdown - Shut Up I Am Dreaming
4. Suburban Kids With Biblical Names - #3
5. Camera Obscura - Let's Get Out Of This Country
6. Ramona Cordova - The Boy Who Floated Freely
7. Oh No! Oh My! - Oh No! Oh My!
8. Destroyer - Rubies
9. The Decemberists - The Crane's Wife
10. Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - House Arrest

I'm waiting for the euphoria of the new Of Montreal CD to die down, but as of now that's the best disc of the year.

BEST SONGS (limited to one per band)

Of Montreal - Bunny Ain't No Kind of Rider
Thom Yorke - The Eraser
Islands - Rough Gem
Sunset Rubdown - Stadiums and Shrines II
Swan Lake - Are You Swimming in Her Pools?
Sonic Youth - Incinerate
Jens Lekman - I Don't Know If Shes Worth 900
Camera Obscura - Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken
Suburban Kids With Biblical Names - Rent a Wreck
Destroyer - Rubies
Ben Kweller - Magic
Voxtrot - Soft & Warm
The Decemberists - Sons and Daughters
Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
Ramona Cordova - One Day Someday
Danielson - Did I Step On Your Trumpet?
TV on the Radio - I Was a Lover
Oh No! Oh My! - I Have No Sister
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Higher and Higher
The Strokes - You Only Live Once
Nelly Furtado ft. Timbaland - Promiscuous Girl
Beirut - After The Curtain
Belle and Sebastian - The Blues Are Still Blue
Midlake - Young Bride

that's a heck of a mix tape.

Man Man - Six Demon Bag ("Van Helsing Boombox")

Really?  This would definitely be in my top five if not my number one.

I guess if that song is your only pick, I could see how the rest of the album wouldn't jive with you.

Have you seen them live?

Man, I've bought even less new music than I did last year! I've been catching up on lots of old stuff.

Regardless, even if I'd bought everything, I doubt I'd like anything as much as Joanna Newsom's new record.

I also liked Eraser. And I have the Man Man album, but I haven't really listened to it much yet. I need to go give it some attention.

Aside from one or two tracks, I found this album very poor. I hope it works better in the context of the film.

Also:
Regina Spektor - Begin to Hope
Pilot Speed - Into the West
Rogue Wave - Descended Like Vultures
Damien Rice - 9
Nellie McKay - Pretty Little Head
David Poe - Live & Solo at the Artists Den

Big disappointment - No new Ryan Adams album (and no, the Willie Nelson thing doesn't count).

why is that hold steady album ranking soo high on everyone's list?
i heard it when it leaked and it bored me to death.  then i heard it again cos a friend of mine told me , you gotta listen to it glued to the lyrics, so i did that, but it bored me even more.

anyway, i think my top ten is the following:

jarvis- jarvis
subtle - for hero:for fool
tv on the radio - return to cookie mountain
joanna newsom - ys
apples in stereo - new magnetic wonder
sonic youth - rather ripped
cornelius - sensuous
cut chemist - the audience's listening
liars - drum's not dead
mogwai - mr beast

honorable mentions:
the black keys- magic potion
the divine comedy - victory for the comic muse
xiu xiu - the air force
the peeping tom album
pizzicato five we love you
and that orphans album by tom waits , although i haven't listened to it in its entirety,  the parts i've heard sounds like the best collection of leftovers ever. my vote for song of the year goes to 'road to peace'

great great stuff all around. 'cept for the hold steady :)

the album begins to trail off a bit for me towards the middle but Hot Soft Light is probably my most played song this year, so for that i have to give it credit.  but you cant list Apples In Stereo cause thats an 07 release!

Not as good as her first, for sure, but far from disappointing.

Here's a few more I forgot the first time around:

Keane - Under the Iron Sea
Placebo - Meds
Gus Black - Autumn Days

And the "One great song amidst a sea of mediocrity" award goes to... Augustana, for "Bullets".

i'm a little overwhelmed and depressed after reading the "best of" lists floating around on the internet.  i thought i stayed on top of everything that i wanted to this year, but after downloading some of the "best songs of the year" at various hipster blog spots i found that i missed a lot that i probably would have enjoyed.  peter bjorn and john's "young folks" is on constant repeat right now.  i just wish i got there earlier.  here's my list, i guess:

1.  joanna newsom - ys
2.  destroyer - rubies
3.  final fantasy - he poos clouds
4.  sunset ruddown - shut up i am dreaming
5.  suburban kids with biblical names - #3
6.  belle and sebastian - the life pursuit
7.  camera obscura - let's get out of this country
8.  the decemberists - the crane wife
9.  oh no! oh my! - oh no! oh my!
10.  ramona cordova - the boy who floated freely

It still hasn't surpassed Roomsound or Heron King Blues to me, but that doesn't mean it's a bad album.  It's still pretty solid.

Also, Cornelius' "Sensuous" weaves in and out of my list, up and down in an endless spiral.

I just picked up Bonnie Prince Billy's The Letting Go, and I think it's really beautiful. Probably my second favorite new thing I've heard so far this year, after Ys.

I also got the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album, finally, and I really like it a lot, although not enough to put it on a list.

I also bought Scott Walker's The Drift. I'm trying to get into it, but I'm having a lot of trouble so far. But I've seen it on a lot of other year end lists, so I'm going to keep listening...

I saw them open for the Aquabats, but I caught them midset.  They still put on quite a show.
