John Waters can currently be seen peeking out from the pages of Entertainment Weekly's "Top 50 Cult Movies" with, perversely enough, his fave "tasteful" movies by the likes of Visconti and Bresson.

"Lacan stressed more and more in his work the power and organizing principle of the symbolic, understood as the networks, social, cultural, and linguistic, into which a child is born. These precede the birth of a child, which is why Lacan can say that language is there from before the actual moment of birth. It is there in the social structures which are at play in the family and, of course, in the ideals, goals, and histories of the parents. This world of language can hardly be grasped by the newborn and yet it will act on the whole of the child's existence."

What's next for you?

JW: I'm writing this movie about sex addicts, because I haven't had one with any sexual themes in a long time. I like it, because all sex looks surreal. Anyway, it's about sex addicts in blue-collar America and their search for dignity called A Dirty Shame, which is something people's parents say a lot in Baltimore. If they hear about something bad, they'll mutter, "Well, that's a dirty shame." And I like that expression, because it's really old-fashioned. People would say, like, "Do you know so-and-so? It's a dirty shame." "She's a whore." [Laughs.]

I will always adore John Waters for acclaiming Woody Allen's Interiors, too. He's a very dapper and refined gentleman, in his way (this actually has not much to do with the Interiors thing, more with the things he's said/written and the way he is in person).

I also watched Desperate Living again recently. Not my favorite John Waters movie, but well worth revisiting.

New Line is Putting on Some More Hairspray
Source: Variety

New Line Cinema will produce a feature remake of Hairspray, completing a 16-year full-circle journey from the modestly budgeted John Waters cult movie, starring Ricki Lake, to the Tony-winning smash Broadway musical and now back to a big screen musical. New Line co-chairmen and co-CEOs Robert Shaye and Michael Lynne confirmed to Variety that the new film will be a priority development project aiming for a 2006 release.

Set in Waters' beloved native Baltimore during the 1960s dance TV craze, Hairspray centers on zaftig high school hairhopper Tracy Turnblad as she graduates from outsider to celebrity trendsetter. Along the way she stars on "The Corny Collins Show," wins the heart of resident hunk Link Larkin and kicks down the barriers for black and white integration on local television.

Based on Waters' original script for the 1988 movie, the play's book was written by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, with musical score and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. O'Donnell and Meehan will adapt their existing book for the screen. In addition to composing the score for the film, Shaiman will produce the songs and serve as music supervisor. The next step will be to attach a director.

Waters Thrilled by Catholic Church Blast at Film

Filmmaker John Waters is thrilled at the review given to his latest film A Dirty Shame from the Catholic News Service - despite it lambasting the movie for being "crude". The cult director's comedic story about sex addicts - starring Tracey Ullman, Johnny Knoxville and Selma Blair - has been met with harsh criticism by the organization, much to the delight of Waters. The review complains, "(The film features) almost non-stop rough, crude and profane language, full frontal nudity, sexual imagery, obscene gestures, scatological humor, casual portrayal and descriptions of deviant sexual practices, a glorification of freewheeling sex and some sacrilegious imagery." Waters tells gossip site Pagesix.Com, "I don't know if I can get a better review than that."

Scary Christmas from John Waters
New Line Records has A John Waters Christmas, a new CD from the eccentric filmmaker, available in stores and online.

Filmmaker John Waters has turned his attention to record making, recording and releasing A John Waters Christmas just in time for this holiday season. Waters claims he "channels the eccentric spirit of Christmas through the most heartfelt but truly outlandish holiday songs recorded."

In his liner notes on the New Line Records release, Waters writes, "Close your eyes and imagine you're with me in my house Christmas morning listening to favorite carols." He acknowledges this is not exactly a Dickensian thought.

Titles include "Santa Claus Is a Black Man" and "Here Comes Fatty Claus," in addition to Little Cindy's "Happy Birthday Jesus," Roger Christian's orphan ode "Little Mary Christmas," the soulful sounds of Fat Daddy's "Fat Daddy (Is Santa Claus)" and Big Dee Irwin and Little Eva's "I Wish You a Merry Christmas."

A John Waters Christmas is now available in stores and online.
