I just bought Magnolia (VHS...ugh) for $3.88 at Wal*Mart. Quite surprised to see this mixed up in the pile but at least I have something to tide me over till I can find the DVD (I don't like buying movies online).

Congratulations. :)

Why not? I've bought DVDs online from Amazon.com a lot and I haven't been disappointed yet.
I bought The House of Yes (talk about a hard to find DVD) and the side of the cover had a long dent in it. Being semi-perfectionesque about my collection that doesn't sit extremely well with me. I also bought Pumpkin which a slight but similar problem. I just can't dig that.
From where?
Amazon.com
Fair enough. Didn't feel like complaining to them? Usually the packaging they ship my stuff in is quite good.

Not for something that small. I just won't do business with them again until I fall in love with a movie so hard to find I have to.
which should be magnolia

Pan and scan, yuck! Like, gag me with a spoon!
I bought Magnolia today on DVD. I don't know why I didn't buy it sooner.
yeah i was at walmart and picked up election and in the mouth of madness for 3.88. sweet.
It's always funny to see, sometimes, how the best movies are so cheap, and these really crappy ones run upwards of $25. Like, I got When Harry Met Sally... from Best Buy for $9.99. One of the best romantic comedies ever. Good stuff.

I have a lot of movies on my list to buy and unfortunately Magnolia isn't at the very top of the list. Not that I don't like it or anything but Miller's Crossing, Platoon, Forrest Gump among others are just more important at the moment. I'll get around to Magnolia one day but for now that crappy VHS will hold me over.

Yeah, I know but when you're tight on money, a cheap VHS can hold you over. I say pan and scan Magnolia is better than no Magnolia at all. Not by much but still.

I picked up In the Mouth of Madness as well. Saw Election but I haven't seen it. I'll rent it sometime to see if it's worth a whole four dollars.
I also got Sex, Lies and Videotape on DVD for $5.88. Haven't seen it but a highly trusted coworker at Hollywood Video reccomended. He credited it as being his favorite movie, Magnolia being the second.

Your point?
This thread kind of reminds me of that episode of South Park with the succubus and the loch ness monster that's always asking for "three-fitty."
And, Sex, Lies, and Videotape is great. See my thread in the Soderbergh forum.

That's fucked up. I got my VHS copy of 'Magnolia' for $4 bucks at a video store! This was ages ago, though.
I realized a few months ago that I had never seen Magnolia in anything but the widescreen aspect (theatre, DVD). Then, one day, it was playing on someone's TV and I sat down to watch it and realized they were watching the video version and I got hot and red and a bit embarrased and excused myself.

umm...whaa?
I know exactly what he means. Since I've come to really love movies, I can't watch anything in the 4:3 television aspect ratio. It's gotta be letterboxed. It's gotta be 1.77:1 (16:9) or 1.85:1 or 2.35:1. Otherwise, it just looks wrong. Except of course for movies that were made in 4:3. But still, ugh.

even post-barrylyndon kubrick films?

Well, personally, its awkward to watch Kubrick's later stuff in standard (or whatever the actual size is) and realize this is what he wanted. But, of course, I watch it regardless, because its the only way I can get it. Daddy needs his fix...

What jokerspath said. That's exactly what I was thinking of when I qualified that original statement.

Being the facists that Walmart execs tend to be, i'm suprised its not called "Whoopie, Misleading Facts, and Videotape"!

I bought a zipper-up hooded sweatshirt (gray in shade) from there once....it's still comfy....
I once met a guy in the middle of an Indiana field, while camping out for a hippy concert....he asked, "Hey ya'll, I am making a run to Wally World, ya'll need a thing?"....
I looked at him and said...."The fuck is "Wally World" Chevy??"

This reminds me of Onomatopoeia's signature.
any of you guys read that article in Spin magazine about the singer of the band "The Used." He was arrested one time (at Blockbuster I think) for stealing a copy of magnolia. I thought that was pretty funny.
Quote from: mogwaiWhy does the band name "The Used" sound so familiar? Aha, the lead singer is dating Kelly Osbourne, right?
oh, that explains the name 'The Used'.......
I was walking through Borders tonight having a cup of coffee and I realized that they were having "Hard Eight" on DVD for $14.99! Now, Borders is the only place I have ever seen this movie available not including the internet and I bought my copy for $25.99. At that time, they only had one copy and after I bought mine, I hadn't seen it in that store for months. Now, they have it again for a cheaper price with two copies.
Well, if my DVD eventually wears out after watching it so many times, I guess I'll have chances to pick up another copy for a cheaper price.

If it turns out that DVDs "wear out," somebody is gonna have some splainin' to do.
