The Source Digs Up Tape Of Eminem Using Racial Slurs
11.18.2003 9:07 PM EST
NEW YORK — Eminem found himself on the defensive Tuesday (November 18) after The Source magazine owners Ray Benzino and Dave Mays held a press conference to play a recording of the MC delivering racial slurs.
On the first of two tracks purportedly recorded in 1993, an audibly young male, who says he's Eminem raps, "All the girls I like to bone have big butts/ No they don't, 'cause I don't like that n----- sh--/ I'm just here to make a bigger hit."
The second track, made in 1988, featured Eminem rapping about a black girlfriend he broke up with. "Blacks and whites, they sometimes mix/ But black girls only want your money, 'cause they dumb chicks," he rhymes. Later in the freestyle Em raps, "Never date a black girl, because they only want your money/ And that sh-- ain't funny."
The first track was only a few lines long, but the second track went on for several minutes with Em — seemingly rhyming off the top of his head — repeatedly saying he did not like black girls and that they were only out to get money. Both tracks sounded amateurish.
"Don't make this right now a double standard," Benzino said at the press conference. "We gotta treat this the same way you treat Mike Tyson, like you treat Kobe Bryant, like you treat R. Kelly, like you treat O.J. Simpson."
Eminem responded to the latter track on Tuesday by insisting he isn't racist and explaining that the recording was made when he was just 15, foolish and angry.
"Ray Benzino, Dave Mays and The Source have had a vendetta against me, Shady Records and our artists for a long time," Eminem said in a statement. "The tape they played today was something I made out of anger, stupidity and frustration when I was a teenager. I'd just broken up with my girlfriend, who was African-American, and I reacted like the angry, stupid kid I was. I hope people will take it for the foolishness that it was, not for what somebody is trying to make it into today."
Eminem's manager, Paul Rosenberg, said Wednesday that neither he nor Eminem had "heard or heard of" the first track Benzino and Mays played.
Eminem, 50 Cent and the rest of the Shady/Aftermath team have had a long-running feud with The Source, fueled by Benzino's accusations that the media operate on a double standard when it comes to the multiplatinum white MC and that an artist of color could never get away with saying some of the things Em says in his music (see "Benzino Ignites Beef By Calling Eminem '2003 Vanilla Ice'").
After their comments, Benzino and Mays refused to entertain questions about the tape and its origins. They did say they plan to include a CD of the Eminem recordings in February's issue, and they promised another press conference concerning Eminem will be held in the future, when they'll answer questions and have civic leaders and members of the hip-hop community on hand.

Benzino is such a fucking bitch. Hes going on some campaign to try and ruin Eminem for some stupid shit he said when he was 15. The track isnt even that racist. Benzino says we have to treat him like Kobe, or R. Kelly. Man Benzino is such a fucking jealous fruit. Fuck the Source Magazine and Fuck Benzino. Benzino picked a lyrical fight with Eminem about a year ago saying that he is only successfull because he is white. Go download the song called Nail in the Coffin. Eminem murders that stupid fuck. HAHAHA.

An interesting article (kind of about Eminem) that I linked to a while ago:
http://www.alternet.org/story.html?StoryID=15328
Quote from: JB's ArticleNo one plies the neo-macho trade like Eminem. Talent notwithstanding, what made this blue-eyed rapper a star was his baroque misogyny (as in: "My little sister's birthday, she'll remember me/For a gift I had ten of my boys take her virginity").
Too bad Eminem didnt say that. A guy in Em's group D12 named Bizzare said that on the Marshal Mathers LP
Quote from: BankyToo bad Eminem didnt say that. A guy in Em's group D12 named Bizzare said that on the Marshal Mathers LP
Who wrote it?
And if this guy did make it up completely with no influence from Eminem, doesn't Eminem have responsibility for his band?
geez JB, bizarre wrote it, bizarre said it. it's not like it's hard to find an actual Eminem lyric to support the argument..
here's one, of the top of my ass:
"that's my girlfriend screamin in the trunk, see i ain't like u,
cos if she suffocates she'll suffer more and then she'll die too"
the article is good, but that quote just made it lose credibility. it's like that fat idiot calling Ludacris "gangsta". i always like articles better when the writer is not totally clueless.
hahaha no first of all everything that bizzare says is fucked up. heres a quote
*warning*
[Bizarre]
Love the pussy

Lame excuse. Chauvanism is confusing therefore it's "effective"?
its hard to explain and im tired

resume in the morning, i say...
this could be interesting
"broke the rubber, busted a nut up in your mother,
so how you feel about havin' another little brother..."
later on in the same song...
"starin' at the bitch with firm tits."
I think it's clear here that eminem loves all women as long as they are firm. Whether they are black or white...it matters not. There is a lot of symbolism within his intelligent, well thought out lyrics...I mean, metaphorically speaking....yeeeaah. The interpretation is all up to the listener...they hear what they are prone to hear.
umm, yeah. okay. "Did he just say what I think he said?"
Either that, or some people are just tight-asses and only fuel his attempt at offending every possible kinda person with their constant whining.
The dude raps about killing his own mom. I am thinkin' him calling black women gold diggers is the least anyone should worry about.
here we go. JB u don't hav to debate in EVERY thread. some ppl just say shit without thinking about it.
if u wanna talk about sumthing interesting, let's get down to what's at the source of everyone's mental and emotional problems:
Do u love ur mother? how much?
I was flipping channels on the radio and came across that Eminem track. I had no idea what it was -- it did sound pretty amateurish, and I couldn't believe it was actually getting played because its pretty racist. I don't for a second believe that Eminem is actually racist, though. So it's more of a curio than anything else. And his misogynistic stuff is (almost) on the same level as Jimi Hendrix talking about going down to shoot his old lady...

I see your point, and I am getting tired of hearing myself go on about this stuff because it keeps coming up, but you have to admit that this thread
was started in that vein.

I like Em and controversy is what he is all about. I think his lyrics are hilarious and very crafty.....take it for what it's worth.

I'm pretty sure Jimi Hendrix's "Hey Joe" is a cover. I'm not real sure though. But it doesn't matter, he did sing it.
Didn't Johnny Cash sing about shooting a man just to see him die?

Yes, it is a cover but check out who (http://www.heyjoe.org/lyrics.html) wrote it
And Yanni!!! That dude is the worst of them all!
Ever heard his album Ethnicity? racist!!!
...please, one of the tracks is even called At First Sight. Bigot prick!
and ...Tribal Dream, Play Time, Rite of Passage...can only lead me to believe he is a barbaric misogynist.
I hate Eminem.
I think people forgot how much of a joke he was when he first came out and how much of a joke he is now. I cringe when people use his name and genius in the same sentence.
eminem is a dirty nigger so he can be racist as much as he likes.
Hey kids...?
Do you like violence? wanna see me...

Wasn't that lyric in the context of a fan saying it to Em and Em actually trying to be reasonable with him?
I'm mixed about Eminem. On the one hand, he is talented, but he's aiming for controversy mostly. And his problems seem to be the problems of popular music in general. No other art form accepts controversy for the sake of controversy the way music does. Hip Hop has ridden it and is shooting itself in the foot right now of legimitacy. Many "classic" songs are pretty cheap in aim, but fuck, they were cool then. Eminem has said he is trying to move on from the controversy and it'll be interesting to see how he does it. "Lose Yourself" may be the beginning, but that was a pretty typical song so hopefully he can do better on his next album.
Get ready to cringe, SHAFTR. Hehe. I was studying for an exam tonight, and going through my MP3s, listening to different stuff while I was studying, and Eminem came up on my list. Last summer, he made a great, great comeback, and one of the amazing songs from that time was Sing for the Moment. In that song, and the brunt of his other work, he's so incredibly articulate. There's also Lose Yourself, Cleaning Out My Closet, and Without Me, which was his little come back song. Sure, he's a cocky ass (probably a front, because he seems like a humble guy in most interviews), but he's also a lyrical genius. Yeah, I said the g-word. He's controversial, and some of his stuff does smack of misogynism and racism (especially some of his less popular stuff my brother showed me a while back), and I don't like that, but he is an artist. I was thinking about it, and I liken him to the Todd Solondz of music. Except most people who watch films don't know who Todd Solondz is. Heh.
one word, sound, reaction: barf (to eminem as a person and an artist)

ughhhh
about Solondz (i've only seen Happiness) but there seems to be a heart in his films that Eminem lacks. Eminem seems to be about making the joke more so than anything else.
Gephardt likes Eminem. Howard Dean doesn't.
Dick Gephardt and Howard Dean disagree on a lot of things, and here's another: rapper Eminem.
The Missouri congressman, close to Dean in Iowa polls, has played Eminem's song "Lose Yourself" on the campaign trail and said he liked the rapper's semi-autobiographical movie "8 Mile."
"I didn't know much about him," Gephardt said Tuesday on ABC's "Good Morning America." "I saw the movie and I like the movie, you know, the story of them growing up poor and so on."
Dean, the former Vermont governor, however, is less of a fan. "My kids like him, but I don't," Dean said in a recent Rolling Stone interview.

An Em fan and using his music on his campaign? I can see him pulling into a religious function with Kim or Kill You playing
Em is controversy and also very articulate, as Omno said. I consider his lyrics very crafty and is one of the top rap lyrical geniuses along with Dr. Dre, Snoop, and Tupac. Like I said before, take his music for what it's worth.
8 Mile, the movie, rather sucked big time IMO.
Eminem to make final solo appearance
DETROIT -- Rap superstar Eminem plans to make his last solo performance in Ireland in September, the Detroit Free Press, his hometown newspaper, said Friday. Citing sources close to the 33-year-old rapper, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, the daily also said his current album "Encore" would probably be his last as he moves to full-time work as a record producer. The final solo appearance of Mathers, the best-selling hip-hop artist ever, would be at a concert in Dublin, Ireland, on Sept. 17, the Free Press said. The newspaper quoted his manager, Paul Rosenberg, as saying no official decision had been made about the future of the Grammy and Oscar-winning artist who has recorded three top-10 albums. But Rosenberg said Mathers' current multi-platinum album was "certainly the cap on this part of his career." Mathers' spokesman at Interscope Records in Los Angeles could not immediately be reached for comment.

Better to retire yourself instead of being forced to retire. Eminem sucks now. There was a time when he would put together the most catchy and hilarious metaphors but those days are long long gone. Seems like he knows it.
1 shitty mc down 1046 to go.
Eminem in Rehab for Sleep Medication
DETROIT - Eminem is undergoing treatment for dependency to sleep medication, his publicist said Thursday, two days after the Grammy-winning rapper canceled his European tour citing exhaustion.
In a brief statement, Dennis Dennehy said Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers III, "is in the hospital under doctors' care."
Eminem wrapped up his nationwide "Anger Management" tour last week, then on Tuesday canceled 10 European concerts that were to kick off Sept. 1 in Hamburg, Germany.
Interscope Records released a statement at the time saying Eminem was being treated for exhaustion, complicated by other medical issues.
Last month, the 32-year-old denied a report that he was planning to retire. But he did say he might be taking a breather after releasing four multi-platinum albums, including his latest, "Encore."
