I don't think that's a very good thread heading there (I'm sure it will be properly changed), but the Chappelle show is the funniest show on television right now.

Charlie Murphy's hollywood stories is unbelievably hilarious.

this and curb your enthusiasm are the only shows i make sure to watch. if reno 911 was on regularly, that'd be another one i'd watch, but comedy central is only playing that at 3 in the morning now for some reason.

my favorite part of "basketball with prince" was that creepy guy with the weird hair, just looking at the camera.

I liked Black Gallagher and the blind black guy who was in the KKK.  His imitations of white people are pretty funny, like in that sketch where different races adopt certain celebrities.  "Alright, cut the malarkey!  Oongawa!"

I'm just glad to see they put the "robot dance" guy in every episode this season so far.  He was in the "And 1 Mix Tape" skit in season 1 for literally 3 seconds but he was so random and so well-placed that he was the main reason my roommate and I rewound that skit repeatedly over a two week period.  It's good to know that we weren't the only ones who thought he was the funniest thing ever.

The reason Tokyo Breakfast was hilarious was because Japan digs the Western culture, so they like to use our slang.  Well, not knowing what it means, they refer to each other as Nigga because that's what Black people do here.

Which is extremely hilarious, no matter who you are.

Money Talks in 'Chappelle's Show' Universe

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Sitting in Comedy Central headquarters for a recent meeting, Dave Chappelle was not happy.

"I ain't makin' no money!" the star complained of the network's sketch-comedy series "Chappelle's Show." "Mr. Hankey makes more than me," he said, alluding to an animated character on the network's "South Park."

The network's response? They replaced the edgy comedian with wholesome talk show host Wayne Brady -- a cruel irony given a past episode in which a cast member sniped, "White people like Wayne Brady because he makes Bryant Gumbel look like Malcolm X."

OK, that nightmare scenario didn't actually happen; it's a skit from a recent episode of "Chappelle." But that raucous brand of racially charged humor has made "Chappelle" the highest-rated original series on basic cable in recent weeks, even topping "South Park," Comedy Central's highest-rated program for the past eight seasons.

But a scene much like this -- sans Brady -- might soon be playing out in real life as Chappelle's representatives begin preliminary talks with the network to bring him back for a third season. With his hit status cemented, Chappelle will have considerable negotiating leverage. Sources say he is fielding movie offers and inquiries from rival networks, who are wondering whether Comedy will be able to afford to lavish him with the kind of contract that kept the likes of Jon Stewart and "South Park" creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker in the fold.

Bill Hilary, executive vp and general manager of Comedy, acknowledged that re-signing Chappelle is "a very high priority. There's got to be a negotiation," he said. "Is it going to be a tough one? Yes. But I think Comedy Central is the place for Chappelle."

"Chappelle's Show" is a streetwise social satire populated by outrageous recurring characters played by Chappelle, including the bewildered crack addict Tyrone Biggums, who was last seen munching on diced pig bladder in a sendup of "Fear Factor." Like "South Park," it is quite risque, with particular emphasis on marijuana and the epithet "bitch." Guest stars have included Carson Daly, Jamie Foxx and Brady, who recently satirized his squeaky-clean image in a skit in which he takes Chappelle on a drive-by shooting spree.

By any measure, "Chappelle" is having an impressive year. As its second season winds down, the series is the highest-rated program in its Wednesday 10:30 p.m. slot on any network among men 18-34 -- the most elusive demographic for any network to reach. Averaging 3.1 million total viewers this season, "Chappelle" has sidestepped the ratings plateau that has cooled off such other hit cable series as FX's "The Shield" and MTV's "The Osbournes" by growing its audience 55% in its sophomore year.

Having "South Park" as a lead-in has helped, but "Chappelle" is hardly riding its coattails. "Chappelle" has posted stronger 18-49 ratings than "South Park" in 11 of the past 13 weeks. Network research indicates there is little duplication of viewers between the two shows and that "Chappelle" brings in new urban viewers while still retaining Comedy's core audience. Even "Daily Show" is getting a lift from "Chappelle," reaching record ratings in recent weeks.

But while Chappelle can be heard exulting "I'm rich, bitch!" at the close of every episode's end credits, the truth is more complicated. Sources familiar with Chappelle's second-season deal at Comedy believe he earns about $90,000 per episode. It's a healthy sum by basic-cable standards, but Chappelle isn't just the star; he also writes and executive produces the series along with longtime partner Neal Brennan.

Chappelle will be seeking a steep pay increase for a third season, which probably wouldn't begin production until next year. But negotiations aren't expected to involve a simple salary bump; Chappelle is looking to become a more equal partner with Comedy on several other fronts.

The comedian, according to sources, is said to be displeased with his cut of DVD sales for the first-season package of "Chappelle's Show." Distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment, the "Chappelle" DVD has been a big hit in the burgeoning TV-to-DVD category, with 800,000 units sold to date since its Feb. 24 release.

Another source of concern for Chappelle: a pilot he is executive producing for Comedy featuring Paul Mooney, a veteran comedian and "Chappelle" performer who made the infamous crack about Brady. Chappelle will be looking for a series commitment for the project, said to be a sendup of daytime courtroom series like "Judge Judy."

To keep Chappelle, Comedy will likely have to offer the kind of megadeal that has kept Stone and Parker at the network since 1997. The duo recently signed a two-year renewal that will keep them there through 2005, and "Daily Show's" Stewart recently extended his contract through 2008.

"In cable, they're not going to pay you outrageous money" at first, said James Dixon, manager of Stewart, among others. "But in success, they will try to compete as best as they can. I think Comedy Central is generally aggressive about that."

Chappelle has a reputation for taking his time with decisions; he took nearly two years to commit to doing the series with Comedy and agreed to a second season at the last minute.

Dave Chappelle to Tell His Family History
Source: The Hollywood Reporter

Dave Chappelle, star of Comedy Central's hit Chappelle's Show, is in talks with New Line to develop the comedy Dave Chappelle's Family History of the World.

The project would see Chappelle play his family members at various points in history as he chronicles his family's fictitious involvement in momentous events, from biblical times to the present day, while also riffing on the black experience.

Chappelle also would write the script for the film.

"I'M RICK JAMES BITCH!" DAVE CHAPPELLE TO STAR IN JAMES' BIOPIC
Source: HollywoodReporter

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura is in negotiations to acquire the film rights to Rick James' autobiography, "Memoirs of a Super Freak," with Dave Chappelle in early talks to topline for Paramount Pictures.

Rick James, who is best known for his hit "Super Freak," has been working on a book for some time. In addition to his own pop and R&B hits, James wrote and produced many songs for artists such as the Temptations, Teena Marie and Eddie Murphy.

Chappelle recently impersonated James in a sketch, alongside Charlie "Darkness" Murphy, on his hit Comedy Central series, "Chappelle's Show."

I actually watched it out of complete hatred for the rich mother in the first two episodes... she is ever-so hatable.  she doesn't work, she sits on her ass, doesn't spend time with her kids and when she moves in with a family that's not as well off as her, she acts like she's God's fucking gift for living the poor life and gracing these people with her presence... ugh... so effin annoying... and her favorite piece of literature ever written is a chain email (an extra shitty one).

Chappelle re-ups for Comedy duty
Source: Hollywood Reporter

Comedy Central has signed a new deal with Dave Chappelle that will return his hit series "Chappelle's Show" to the network for two more seasons. The cable channel is expected to announce later today that the comedian has committed to 26 more episodes of "Show." Each season will consist of 10 original episodes, plus two "best-of" episodes and another devoted to musical performances that are a key component of the sketch comedy series. Sources familiar with the deal indicate Chappelle's deal is easily the richest deal in basic cable, an eight-figure sum that gives the comedian a healthy chunk of the robust DVD sales his series has generated. Bringing Chappelle back was a huge priority for incoming Comedy president Doug Herzog, who helped negotiate the deal. The series has emerged as an energizing force on the Comedy schedule, not only performing well in repeats but boosting the likes of "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart."

'Super Freak' Rick James dead
Friday, August 6, 2004 Posted: 3:34 PM EDT (1934 GMT)

(CNN) -- Singer Rick James was found dead in his home Friday morning by his caretaker, a Los Angeles police Department spokesman said.

James, 56, was a musical icon of the early 1980's and credited with helping to create the "punk funk" style of music that was characterized in his 1981 album "Street Songs."

"Street Songs" was widely acclaimed as a masterpiece upon its release and featured such hits as "Super Freak," "Give it To Me Baby," and "Fire and Desire."

"Street Songs" went triple platinum and catapulted James into the forefront of the funk movement.

The album's gritty content earned James a bad boy reputation that he often had a tough time living down. Some critics said it led to his eventual involvement with drugs and a conviction for aggravated assault and false imprisonment in the 1990s.

Chappelle's Show In May
Season Two's coming, bitch!

After a few delays, Paramount Home Entertainment will release Chappelle's Show - Season Two Uncensored on a three-DVD set on May 24 for a suggested price of around $30.

This set will contain all 13 uncensored and unblurred episodes from the second season along with special bonus features exclusive to the DVD release. Video will be in full screen and audio in Dolby 2.0, but the extras look like fun. They include audio commentary on five episodes by Dave Chappelle and series co-creator and executive producer Neal Brennan, Chappelle stand-up material, The Rick James Extended Interview, Charlie Murphy's Rick James memories; and two unaired Charlie Murphy's "True Hollywood Stories" and a whopping 71-minute collection of deleted scenes and bloopers with commentary by Chappelle and Brennan.

'Chappelle' on hold at Comedy Central
Source: Hollywood Reporter

Comedy Central has postponed the premiere of its hit series "Chappelle's Show" less than a month before it was scheduled to return for a third season.

The network offered no rationale for the decision, releasing only a brief statement: "Comedy Central has suspended production on the third season of "Chappelle's Show" until further notice. All parties are optimistic that production will resume in the near future."

Representatives for the show's star, Dave Chappelle, declined comment.

One of Comedy Central's highest-rated series, "Chappelle" was supposed to be back on the air May 31. The network already has postponed the third season once; "Chappelle" originally was scheduled to bow in February.

A Comedy Central spokesman had blamed the first postponement on writing delays. Other published reports noted that Chappelle was battling the flu.

Chappelle made headlines in August when he signed on for two more seasons of his series in a deal worth about $50 million -- an expensive sum for a cable program. The new deal was supposed to give Chappelle a portion of the robust DVD sales generated by its first season, which has sold more than 3 million units.

The DVD release of the second season of "Chappelle" also was postponed this year after Paramount Home Video originally scheduled units to hit stores in February timed to the third-season bow. The release date was pushed back to May 24.

Comedy Central had ordered 13 episodes for the third season. Production on the series yielded material late last year but then closed for the holidays and didn't resume until February.

"Chappelle" was one of several series launches that the network had scheduled through the summer, including the return of "Reno 911!" and new series "Stella."

The postponement was made just one day after the MTV Networks' upfront presentation, during which Comedy Central president Doug Herzog touted his upcoming lineup. The network also has just appointed Jeff Lucas, former president of advertising sales at NBC Universal's cable division, as its new senior vp ad sales.

Report: Chappelle in mental health facility

Comedy Central star Dave Chappelle has checked himself into a mental health facility in South Africa, the magazine Entertainment Weekly reported on Wednesday.

The comedian's whereabouts and condition have been unknown since Comedy Central abruptly announced last week that the planned May 31 launch of the third season of "Chappelle's Show" had been postponed and production halted.

Chappelle flew from Newark, N.J., to South Africa on April 28 for treatment, said the magazine, quoting a source close to the show it would not identify. Entertainment Weekly said it had corroborating sources for its story.

"We don't know where he is," Comedy Central spokesman Tony Fox said. "We've heard about South Africa. We don't know. We haven't talked to Dave."

Chappelle's spokesman, Matt Labov, would not comment on the magazine's story.

"It seems like the issues he's contending with are really quite serious," said Dade Hayes, a senior editor at Entertainment Weekly. "It isn't a case of him spending a weekend someplace recuperating from exhaustion."

The magazine's sources say Chappelle is still in the facility, which was not named, Hayes said. Chappelle's representatives have denied that the comedian was abusing drugs.

Chappelle reportedly signed a $50 million deal with Comedy Central for two more seasons of his show, a payday made possible because of the explosive sales of the show's first season DVD.

The magazine said Chappelle had shot four to five episodes' worth of sketches for the new season, but none of its onstage introductions.

Dave Chappelle Found! Talks Exclusively with TIME Magazine in South Africa

"I figured, Let me just cut myself off from everybody, take a minute and pull a Flintstone-stop a speeding car by using my feet as the brakes. I am surprised at what I would do for $50 million. I am surprised at what people around me would do for me to have $50 million," Dave Chappelle tells TIME's Christopher John Farley in an exclusive interview.

CHAPPELLE tells TIME he's not in mental hospital or drug rehab, debunking earlier reports in ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY and elsewhere.

The full story, as well as exclusive photos of Chappelle in South Africa, will appear on TIME.com Sunday morning and in the issue that hits newsstands Monday.

Buddies - Best Buy To Get Exclusive Release of Dave Chappelle's 1996 Series
Posted by David Lambert
4/25/2005

In 1991, the creative team of Matt Williams, David McFadzean, and Carmen Finestra - who had worked on shows like Roseanne and The Cosby Show - moved from Carsey-Werner over to Touchstone Television, and created the sitcom classic Home Improvement. Five years later, while Tim Allen was still riding high as Tim "The Toolman" Taylor, the same creative team attempted to put together a new series, called "Buddies", co-starring a comedian by the name of Dave Chappelle.

Those of you who have seen him in Chappelle's Show (and we know there are a lot of you, since the DVDs have sold so well) may recall his jokes in the early episodes about all his failed TV series. Buddies was probably among the "most successful" of those, even though only 13 episodes were produced, and ABC only aired 5 of them. Chappelle's character is named, well, "Dave", and Christopher Gartin (from the cast of M.A.N.T.I.S.) played "John", who is best friends with Dave, and they go into business together in the film industry. John's wife "Lorraine" was played by Paula Cale (co-star of Providence), and Dave's dad was played by none other than Shaft himself, Richard Roundtree!

Best Buy, the national retail chain that recognized early on what a hot genre TV-on-DVD would become, has managed to get the rights to sell Buddies on DVD exclusively through their stores. The information comes to us through one of our readers, "Bob", who tips us off to an online ad promoting the release, which is scheduled for May 17th. Here's the text from that ad:

Best Buy Exclusive!
Release date: 5/17/05

Get 10 episodes of Buddies, the 1996 sitcom starring Dave Chappelle, including 8 that never aired!

Dave Carlisle (Chappelle) and John Bailey are best friends and    partners in a struggling video production business named Hi-Intensity.

However, there are a few twists in this setup. Dave is black and John is white. They live in the same building, so their lives are totally intertwined. John is a newlywed, struggling to have a successful marriage with Lorraine, while Dave is struggling to remain a successful bachelor (despite the attempts of his girlfriend, Phyllis).

Now, there are some confusing things in that text, so let's mention them here: They say that there will be "10 episodes" on this release, but it's easy to find episode lists (TVTome.com for example) which demonstate that there were 13 episodes produced. Is this a typo in Best Buys' ad? We hope so, because it makes no sense to deliver just 77% of such a short-lived series!

The other confusing thing is that the character of "John" is referred to with the last name of "Bailey", whereas TVTome says the character's last name is "Butler. Heading to the Internet Movie DataBase (IMDB.com) doesn't clear things up: it says the character name is "Chris" (we're sure that's due to some confusion with the actor's name, Christopher Gartin).

Well, we're sure this confusion will be cleared up on May 17th, when Best Buy makes this release available. The cost I see for the DVD is $14.99, and we've got the box art below as well. The wording on the cover proclaims this as "The Show Dave Chappelle Doesn't Want You To See!" Whatever...former Miss America Vanessa L. Williams appears in one episode, and NBA Hall-of-Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar shows up in one of the unaired episodes; just try to keep us away!

In this week's TIME, Christopher John Farley reveals why Dave Chappelle decided to leave his hit show and what he's been up to since he disappeared to South Africa two weeks ago. Last Friday night, TIME Johannesburg bureau chief Simon Robinson met with the comic at uShaka Marine World on the beach in the South African port of Durban. In a ninety minute conversation, Chappelle was eager to set the record straight on why he suddenly left the U.S. and what he's doing in South Africa. Here's Robinson's account:

Dave Chappelle shows up to our interview in a red t-shirt, blue jeans and shiny white sneakers. He lopes around in his usual style, pacing a lot, but does not seem like a man struggling to speak or to order his thoughts at all. He's lucid and thoughtful and a couple of times asks me to give him some time to think about answers. He concedes that he is dealing with a lot of issues and mentions that he had consulted a psychiatrist about a week ago for a forty minute session. He is also quite fastidious about keeping his new sneakers clean and stops at least twice to wipe smudges off their toes.

The first thing Chappelle wants is to dispel rumors—that he's got a drug problem, that he's checked into a mental institution in Durban—that have been flying around the U.S. for the past week. He says he is staying with a friend, Salim Domar, and not in a mental institution, as has been widely reported in America. Chappelle says he is in South Africa to find "a quiet place" for a while. "Let me tell you the things I can do here which I can't at home: think, eat, sleep, laugh. I'm an introspective dude. I enjoy my own thoughts sometimes. And I've been doing a lot of thinking here."

The picture he paints—and it seems a fairly honest and frank assessment— is of someone struggling to come to terms with a new position and power who's still figuring out how to come to grips with how people around him are reacting to the $50 million deal he signed last year with Comedy Central. Without naming specific characters, he seems to blame both some of his inner circle (not his family) and himself for the stresses created by last year's deal.

"There were things that overwhelmed me," he says. "But not in the way that people are saying. I haven't spent any of the money. All that stuff about partying and taking crack is not true. Why do I live on a farm in Ohio? To support my partying lifestyle?"

The problems, he says, started with his inner circle."If you don't have the right people around you and you're moving at a million miles an hour you can lose yourself," he says. "Everyone around me says, 'You're a genius!'; 'You're great!'; 'That's your voice!' But I'm not sure that they're right." And he stresses that Comedy Central was not part of the problem and put no more than normal television restrictions on what he could do.

"You got to be careful of the company you keep," Chappelle says. "It's hard to know how much to say. One of the things that happens when people make the leap from a certain amount of money to tens of millions of dollars is that the people around you dramatically change.

"During my ascent, I've seen other people go through that wall to become really big. They always said that fame didn't change them but that it changes the people around them. You always hear that but you never really understand it. But now that I'm there that makes a lot of sense and I'm learning what that means. You have to have people around you that you can trust and aren't just out for a meal ticket."

The breakdown in trust within his inner circle seems to have led him to question the material they were producing. He seems obsessed with making sure the material is good and honest and something that he will be proud. "I want to make sure I'm dancing and not shuffling," he says. "What ever decisions I make right now I'm going to have live with. Your soul is priceless." The first two seasons of his show "had a real spirit to them," he says. "I want to make sure whatever I do has spirit."

But Chappelle also says that he must share the blame for the stalled third season. "I'm admittedly a human being," he says. "I'm a difficult kind of dude." His earlier walkout during shooting "had a little psychological element to it. I have trust issues, things like that. I saw some stuff in myself that I just didn't dig. It's like when I brought a girl home to my mom and it looked as if my mom really didn't like this girl. And she told me, 'I like her just fine. I just don't like you around her.' That's how I feel in this situation. There were some things about myself that I didn't like. People got to take inventory from time to time. That's what this [coming to South Africa] is for."

This is Chappelle's second trip to South Africa. He first came to Durban, and visited Salim, in 2000. Chappelle won't tell me exactly how he met Salim but describes him as a family friend. A soft-spoken Muslim, Salim seems also to be something of a sounding board to Chappelle, who converted to Islam several years ago. While Chappelle is not doing a formal religious course in Durban, says Salim, who wore a simple cotton robe and hung back through the interview and photo shoot and only spoke when I asked him a question, "if he wants to talk religion then I'm there as someone to talk to." Says Chappelle: "This is kind of my spot where I can come to fill my spirit back up. Sometimes you neglect these things if you are running on a corporate schedule." The crux of his crisis seems to boil down to his almost obsessive need to "check my intentions." He uses the phrase a few times during the interview and explains that it means really making sure that he's doing what he's doing for the right reasons.

His family, he says, has been a huge support over the past eight months. "They've been phenomenal really, just incredible. What beautiful people. Everyone loves their family but it's good if you can like them too."

His religion is also crucial. "I don't normally talk about my religion publicly because I don't want people to associate me and my flaws with this beautiful thing. And I believe it is a beautiful religion if you learn it the right way. It's a lifelong effort. Your religion is your standard. Coming here I don't have the distractions of fame. It quiets the ego down. I'm interested in the kind of person I've got to become. I want to be well rounded and the industry is a place of extremes. I want to be well balanced. I've got to check my intentions, man."

That includes planning for the future. When I ask him if he would ever buy a place of his own in South Africa, Chappelle replies, "First of all I've got to make sure I've got a job."

He says that he's only been recognized five or six times in the two weeks he's been here. "It happens so sporadically that when it does it freaks me out because I have to remember, 'Oh, yeah, I'm famous.'" At the end of our interview/photo shoot an American woman does recognize him. "Number seven," he cries. "Wow, I'm not that big in Africa. I've got to do an action film here."

During most of the hour and a half that we talk, Chappelle is serious and introspective. But he still has his sense of humor, which comes out as we near the end of our conversation: "Is that enough to prove I'm not smoking crack or hanging out in a mental institution?"

Par pushes on with DVD plans for 'Chappelle'

The third season of Comedy Central's hit "Chappelle's Show" might be postponed indefinitely, but Paramount Home Entertainment is proceeding with plans to release the complete second season on DVD on May 24 -- a week before Season 3 was supposed to debut on TV.

Initially, "Chappelle's Show Season Two: Uncensored" (about $37) had been slated for release last February, the originally scheduled date for the Season 3 premiere. But when Comedy Central announced the show was running behind schedule, May dates were set for both the DVD and the new season of the top-rated sketch comedy series starring comedian Dave Chappelle.

The buzz around Chappelle's supposed flight to South Africa to check into a mental-health clinic -- reported by Entertainment Weekly but subsequently denied by Chappelle, who said that he's staying with friends in Durban -- could spur DVD sales of the Season 2 set to record heights, industry observers say.

"Chappelle's Show Season One" has sold about 2.8 million copies since its February 2004 release and is the top-selling TV DVD package of all time, Paramount claims.

Paramount has done so well with Chappelle and several other high-profile releases -- including "Blue Collar Comedy Tour Rides Again," which has sold more than 2.5 million DVDs since its release last December -- that the studio is upping its commitment to the comedy genre.

Domestic home entertainment president Meagan Burrows said that the studio is "in the process of developing a new comedy label," with several releases already in the pipeline, including a third "Blue Collar Comedy Tour" DVD.

Paramount also has inked a multiyear, "first look" worldwide agreement with Parallel Entertainment Pictures, producers of the "Blue Collar Comedy Tour Rides Again" DVD, for six DVD premieres, a feature film and a new DVD starring Larry the Cable Guy.

In addition, Paramount is working with Comedy Central to release performances by up-and-coming stand-up acts, Burrows said.

"Chappelle's Show Season Two: Uncensored" includes such extras as an additional standup routine from Chappelle, more than an hour of bloopers and deleted scenes, two unaired Charlie Murphy stories and several audio commentaries from Chappelle and series co-creator Neal Brennan.

Chappelle raises bar of TV-DVD

Underscoring the growing clout of the TV-DVD category, "Chappelle's Show: Season 2 Uncensored" chalked up first-day sales of nearly 500,000 copies, setting a new TV-DVD sales record, according to Paramount Home Entertainment.

Within a week of its May 24 release, sales of the hefty three-disc, $37 package topped 1.2 million units, Paramount said, while sales of the first-season set, out for more than a year, spiked past the 3 million-unit mark.

That's 200,000 units more than the sales tally in early May, when Comedy Central announced Season 3 of Dave Chappelle's highly rated sketch comedy show would be postponed indefinitely and the comedian fled to South Africa, where rumors circulated that he had checked himself into a mental health facility.

The controversy made headlines worldwide and put Chappelle on the cover of Time and other magazines.

Paramount maintains the first-day sales total makes "Chappelle's Show: Season 2 Uncensored" the fastest-selling TV DVD release ever.

Thomas F. Lesinski, president of worldwide home entertainment for Paramount Pictures, said the title is "poised to reach the 2 million-unit mark within the next 30 days."

"Dave Chappelle has set a new standard for comedy, and this DVD, which we worked closely with Comedy Central on, has now set the standard for TV-DVD," Lesinski said.

Sales were strong across all demographics, Lesinski said, with particularly high numbers among the lucrative 18-34 male demographic. Accordingly, Paramount tapped "Chappelle" to be one of its first UMD releases for the Sony PlayStation Portable.

Chappelle to meet with Comedy reps
Source: Los Angeles Times

Dave Chappelle may be ready to return to Comedy Central after secretly stealing away last month to South Africa and forcing the channel to postpone the planned May 31 debut of the comedian's popular program.

Before jumping into the driver's seat of a black Lexus at the Four Seasons hotel in Los Angeles on Friday morning, Chappelle said he would be discussing the prospects at a meeting next week with representatives of the channel.

"Chappelle's Show" is the highest-rated program on Comedy Central after "South Park." Since Chappelle's disappearance, copies of the program's DVD have flown off the shelf, prompting questions in some quarters about whether his departure was actually an orchestrated sales stunt. He has since characterized it as a "spiritual retreat."

Sales of the DVD of "Chappelle's Show: Season 2 Uncensored" have topped 1.2 million since being released May 24.

Chappelle, 31, arrived in Los Angeles earlier this week and stunned audiences at two popular comedy clubs Wednesday night when he took to the stage to deliver impromptu stand-up routines.

A Comedy Central spokesman called the notion of a stunt "nonsense" and said he was unaware of any meeting scheduled for next week. "We've been anticipating hearing from Dave and expect to shortly," he said.

Chappelle Still a Question Mark

More than two months after Dave Chappelle disappeared on an impromptu South African spiritual retreat, Comedy Central still has no idea when the top-rated Chappelle's Show will return to the air.

The third season of the sketch-comedy series was scheduled to debut on May 31, but production on the show was shut down early that month after Chappelle vanished.

Chappelle surfaced weeks later in South Africa, where he did an interview with Newsweek in which he denied rumors that he had succumbed to either mental illness or drug abuse, but admitted that he was stressed out and unhappy with the creative direction of his show.

In late May, Chappelle turned up in his hometown of Yellow Springs, Ohio, before heading back to Los Angeles in early June and performing a series of surprise standup routines in area comedy clubs.

A few days after returning to Los Angeles, Chappelle met with Comedy Central President Doug Herzog in a hotel lobby to talk business.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter Thursday after unveiling his upcoming programming slate to TV critics, Herzog said that he told Chappelle the network was looking forward to welcoming him back, but that the comedian said he needed more time.

"The ball's in Dave's court," Herzog said. "If you see him, tell him to phone home."

Under the terms of the $50 million contract Chappelle signed last summer, he's supposedly locked into a production deal with the network through 2006, including a third and fourth season of Chappelle's Show.

Herzog said earlier that he does not expect the show to return to the air this year.

Despite losing the network's top show, Herzog said Comedy Central's ratings were actually up a bit--but not as high as they would be with Chappelle's irreverent humor on board.

"We didn't go backward without him, which was a great fear," Herzog told the Reporter. "It's no question that [the ratings] would be much better with Dave Chappelle."

Since no new episodes of Chappelle's Show have aired since 2004, the series was absent from this year's Emmy nominations. However, Chappelle picked up an Emmy bid for his Showtime special Dave Chappelle: For What It's Worth, which was nominated in the Best Variety Special category.

Meanwhile, in the absence of Chappelle's Show, DVDs of the series' first and second seasons have been flying off the shelves as fans get their fix the only way they can.

What?! "Chappelle Show" Kaput?

Fans who were hoping that Dave Chappelle would soon return to work are not going to want to read this.

Charlie Murphy, a writer and actor on the funnyman's top-rated Chappelle's Show, dropped a bombshell to the New York Post Wednesday, saying that, to his knowledge, the hit Comedy Central series has officially run its course.

"I don't think Dave is going to do it anymore," Murphy told the Post. "We shot about eight shows for the third season, and they're hilarious. They'll be released on DVD, I'm sure. But that's it."

Murphy, the older brother of comic actor     Eddie Murphy, has emerged out of his sibling's shadow thanks to his dual roles as both a writer and performer on Chappelle's Show. Viewers know him best in one skit, Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories, in which he played himself relating real-life tales of hanging out with his more famous brother and whooping funk "Superfreak" Rick James' ass.

The segment caught fire thanks to Chappelle, who played James and turned "I'm Rick James, bitch!" into an instantly popular catchphrase, launching Chappelle's Show into the ratings stratosphere.

Season three of Chappelle's Show was supposed to premiere May 31, but production ground to a halt last April after Chappelle disappeared on an impromptu South African "spiritual retreat".

According to Murphy, all was "fun, very normal" during shooting. One new skit they did for the new season was one of the funniest bits they ever came up with.

"It was hilarious," Murphy recalled to the Post. "I was Frankenstein, Dave was the Wolfman, Donnell [Rawlings] was the Mummy. We were living together and experiencing problems, because we're monsters. But I thought it was because I was black that all these things were happening, not because I was Frankenstein."

All for naught apparently.

Chappelle's abrupt absence led wild press speculation as to why he went MIA.

Newsweek was the first to take a stab, reporting that friends blamed a combination of too much partying, overwhelming pressure to make good on his $50 million contract and creative sparring with Comedy Central executives led to the meltdown.

But Chappelle later said such suggestions were half-baked.

"I'm not crazy, I'm not smoking crack. I'm definitely stressed out," he told Time magazine in his only comments on the matter.

The comedian added that it was only now beginning to dawn on him just how much of a pop culture sensation Chappelle's Show had become, and the trip was necessary to clear his head and mull the show's creative future.

In late May, Chappelle eventually surfaced in his hometown of Yellow Springs, Ohio, before heading back to Los Angeles in early June and performing a series of surprise standup routines in area comedy clubs.

In another interview with TV Guide, however, Murphy indicated that Chappelle decided to pull the plug because he wanted to work on the new stand-up material for a big show he'd like to take out on the road later this year.

"I'm disappointed it ended the way it did, but I'm not angry with anybody," he said. "Chappelle's Show was like the Tupac of TV shows. It came out, it got everybody's attention, it was a bright shining star, but it burned out and for some strange reason, it burned out quick."

But as far as network president, Doug Herzog, has previously stated, the door is wide open for the entertainer's return.

"The ball's in Dave's court," Herzog told the Hollywood Reporter recently. "If you see him, tell him to phone home."

The loss of its top show has turned out not to have done much damage. Comedy Central ratings are actually up a bit this season, though Herzog acknowledged they'd be higher with Chappelle's irreverent humor aboard.

In any case, until they get an official confirmation from Chappelle as to what his plans are, fans will just have to be satisfied with the release of the first two seasons of Chappelle's Show on DVD, both of which have been selling like hotcakes and snagged the title for the fastest-selling DVD of a TV series ever.

More Chappelle's Show Coming in 2006
Source: Variety December 5, 2005

Variety says that Dave Chappelle is coming back to Comedy Central -- sort of. The network revealed Sunday that it will air previously-recorded sketches from the comedian as part of what is being billed as season three.

The sketches will be shown first on Comedy Central's online broadband network, Motherload, and later broadcast on the cable network. The broadcast will take place sometime in 2006.

Chappelle has been on an open-ended hiatus for about ten months, with taping of the third season of his Chappelle's Show suspended indefinitely. Sources close to the series were recently quoted that they did not believe he would ever return to the program.

Chappelle signed a two-year deal with Comedy Central shortly before he decided to suspend taping.

so was it "for what it's worth" or "killing them softly" or the San Fran one?  WHICH ONE?
also, not to be all sensitive and stuff, but it really irks me that this thread is still called "funny ass nigga".  Now that prophet is gone, can someone please modified the title to something slightly less hip-white-guy?

it was an HBO comedy special from 1997 that's never been on comedy central but i did remember seeing a long long while ago on HBO..

Who changed it?  Are we giving Pete a hard time?  Because it's called "Chappelle's Show"

If we're giving Pete a hard time, I'm fine with it, but if not, let's change it to reflect the correct title.

Chappelle Said Unhappy With Network Plans

DAYTON, Ohio - Comedian Dave Chappelle says he may never return to his hit Comedy Central show if the cable network goes through with plans to air new episodes culled from material he filmed before leaving the series.

"I feel like it's kind of a bully move," Chappelle told the Dayton Daily News in a telephone interview for a story Wednesday. "That's just how I feel about it. I don't know if that's the case. But if people don't watch it, then I'd be more than happy."

Last May, Chappelle stunned his fans and the entertainment industry by skipping out on a $50 million contract and leaving "Chappelle's Show" in mid-production. He spent two weeks in South Africa before returning home to his farm near Yellow Springs, Ohio. He has since resumed performing live standup.

Chappelle said his possible return to "Chappelle's Show" is still up in the air.

"But I think if they air that stuff, I can't see how I'm going to be able to," he told the Daily News. "That will damage our relationship."

Comedy Central has said in the past it plans to air the material, but wouldn't comment on any current specific plans.

"We are still waiting patiently for Dave to return to work, but we know that our viewers are looking forward to seeing the material he produced for the third season," Comedy Central said in a written statement.

Chappelle was scheduled to do a standup show and attend the premiere of his new movie "Dave Chappelle's Block Party" in the Dayton area Wednesday.

The sooner Comedy Central realizes that Dave Chappelle is never coming back to them, and the sooner Dave Chappelle realizes that he's never going back to Comedy Central, the sooner we can all get on with our post-Chappelle's Show lives.

In other words, just stop playing each others' games and show the episodes you've got.

sometimes i wish i could just run up to dave chapelle and shake him! -- "Look man, EVERYONE LOVES YOUR SHOW! You're arguably the ONE comedian that EVERYONE loves! The show is BRILLIANT! The Rick James and Prince episodes are two of the funniest things that have EVER aired on TV! We love it! Comedy Central obviously loves you b/c they're willing to pay you $50 million! You've made it man! ENJOY IT!"

although i do sympathize with his plight to some degree. the pressure, yadda yadda. plus, having obnoxious 13 year olds running up to you going "I'm Rick James BITCH!" while your walking your two-year old in the park can't be too fun.

so yeah, it's a tough one.  :ponder:

but chappelle didn't want those episodes shown, according to what he said on oprah, 'cause he hated this generation of kids who watched his show to laugh at them crrraazy black folks (same with Conan who disliked the same crowd for missing the point of his more obvious jokes).  he realized at a certain point he was responsible for a whole lot, and had to rethink the whole thing.

I can't blame him for feeling dejected if he creates some very good sketches, even if the show itself was uneven, and people reducing the show to two catchphrases.

A friend and I actually talked about something like this a few years ago.  I said that Chappelle's Show often used stereotypes to comment on whatever the subject was, while satirizing the stereotypes themselves (Mad Real World, Tyrone Biggums), and he replied that most people probably don't understand the show on that level and just laugh at what they see onscreen.  When many people seem to have only gotten "I'm Rick James, bitch" and "wwwwwhhhat" from the show, I think he was right.

By leaving Chappelle cemented the words he wasn't proud of.  He left the jokes that he didn't like embedded in the audience's minds since he only kicked out two seasons saturated with them.  Why didn't he follow up with a third season, which apparently he had at least some creative control (if not quite a lot) and put jokes that would point that stuff out?

It was clear with some of his jokes that he wanted to say more and be taken more seriously, but he knew his audience.  I don't blame him for using dick and fart jokes along with intelligent jokes to reach all audiences, but I do blame him for giving up.  He had a lot of control, and he was just beginning to actually slide the things he wanted to be heard into his jokes.  The Black White Supremacist sketch was shocking, but the message was hilarious.  Especially the skit where he had a pretty white girl sing his thoughts so the censors would let him get away with it.  There's no doubt in my mind that he believes crack and AIDS were invented to destroy the black community, as well as his love for lesbians.  Whether or not he was right wasn't the point.  He had many more things to say than he even led us to believe, and I think he needs to take Comedy Central's offer and just say it, and use that money for charity or however he stipulated.

If he doesn't, he'll just look like an unintelligent flake, and we at least know he's somewhat intelligent.

Chappelle explains himself to Esquire

Dave Chappelle says in a new interview that he had several reasons for walking away from his cult-fave "Chappelle's Show" -- and a deal worth more than $50 million.

His decision to leave the Comedy Central series last May led fans and industry executives to question his motives, and his sanity.

But in a 10-page spread in the Esquire magazine arriving Saturday, he says he closed "Chappelle" for reasons cultural, professional and personal.

Culturally: "The bottom line was, white people own everything, and where can a black person go and be himself or say something that's familiar to him and not have to explain or apologize?"

Professionally: "I felt like I was really pressured to settle for something that I didn't necessarily feel like I wanted."

Personally: "The thing about show business is that, in a way, it forces dysfunctional relationships in people."

Chappelle tells the magazine that putting on "Chappelle's Show" was the best television experience he ever had. He plans to continue telling jokes and entertaining audiences, he says, so long as he can retain a degree of personal and creative freedom.

He "walked away" from a 50 million dollar deal, so I imagine he didn't take it.

Final 'Chappelle's Show' Episodes Get Airdate
'Lost' sketches debut on Comedy Central in July
Source: Zap2It.com

Comedy Central has finally set an airdate for the final episodes of "Chappelle's Show," which will feature sketches Dave Chappelle completed before walking away from the series.

The network will unveil what it's calling "Chappelle's Show: The Lost Episodes" on Sunday, July 9. For those keeping score at home, that's more than two years since the last original installment of the show first aired and 15-plus months since Comedy Central's last scheduled premiere date for season three.

Soon after Comedy Central made that announcement, Chappelle quit the show, raising rumors that he'd suffered a breakdown and sought treatment in Africa. The comedian did indeed visit Africa but has repeatedly denied rumors that anything was wrong with him.

He has since said in interviews that his widely publicized fat contract -- which was reportedly worth as much as $50 million -- and stories about him having writer's block caused undue stress. He also says he became uncomfortable with the direction the show was taking: "I was doing sketches that were funny but socially irresponsible," he told Oprah Winfrey in February."

"Chappelle's Show" regulars Charlie Murphy and Donnell Rawlings will introduce the sketches, as Chappelle hadn't filmed any introductions before his departure.

In addition to "The Lost Episodes," Comedy Central will also unveil new seasons of "Reno 911!" and "Mind of Mencia" on July 9.

I can't believe no one has commented on how terrible these "lost episodes" have been.

I don't know about last night's but last week was pretty funny.  That Tupac skit in particular was classic Chappelle.

I think i'm particularly referring to how god-awful last nights entire episode was. The whole "racial fairy" skit makes me think that it was the one chappelle walked out during.

Yep, that's the one.  Hence the Q&A on the skit afterwards.  I didn't think this week was so bad either, barring the Gary Coleman ski.  The only thing I don't like is the constant subtle jabbing at Chappelle.  Like the Q&A.  They obviously put that in just so they can run the skit (which Chappelle said he didn't want any of it shown if Comedy Central expects him to come back) and still try to court Chappelle by saying "Hey, Dave!  We had this open forum because we wanted you to see firsthand what people think of the sketch.  See, it's not as bad as you think."  But all I could think of watching that was Chappelle sitting at home saying, "Fuck these mutherfuckers."

holy crap just caught it on youtube.  the forum afterwards was obnoxious.  they were saying all the corny things that Dave strayed away from in the first place.  I hate how everyone in the world is so savvy with the idea of a "stereotype" now.  the forum reminded me of the writers meeting scene in Bamboozled.  everyone had an idea, but nobody had a clue.

I thought of that too.  It was half-assed to begin with and most of them were just saying things that they think make them sound smart.

The new specials were fantastic.

He's obviously older, more refined and a bit more subdued but there are so many great stories and deliveries. Can't wait for the next one.
