Title: stupid fun comedies
Post by: bonanzataz on July 15, 2003, 08:19:57 AM
what are some comedies that many film "buffs" would stick their nose up at that are your favorites? ones that i enjoy very much:

wayne's world - tops the list, i've seen it more than 20 times
sorority boys - really funny, a shame nobody's ever seen it
billy madison - my favorite of the sandler oeuvre (like, his stupid comedies for all you PTA fanboys screaming blasphemy)
saving silverman - or anything with jack black for that matter
freddy got fingered - sheer brilliance
orgazmo - oh man, this movie is just plain funny

i can't think of others now, but i'll get back to you on that, i'm sure.

Well, I hate Mike Myers, but Waynes World is pretty good.

           NO
Stairway to Heaven

how about Road Trip.  I think it was the funniest of the teen/college/whatever/comedy movie explosion

Orgazmo is pretty damn funny! Anything from Troma has a special place in my heart. But my favorite comedy of all time is Trading Places. That movie rocked!

Airplane is a classic.

And of course the Naked Gun & Hot Shots movies.
Title: stupid fun comedies

Yeah... Nothing beats Airplane... all stupid movies following were trying to be as good, but most failed, including the sequel.

Top Secret was pretty good, same with Hot Shots (mostly Part Deux) and the first 2 Naked Guns.

Also Mel Brook's earlier shit... Spaceballs, Blazing Saddles, Young Frank...

Even funnier is Roger Ebert's review of Wet Hot American Summer (http://www.suntimes.com/ebert/ebert_reviews/2001/08/083104.html).

Stupid fun comedies are great.  I like Dumb and Dumber (but who doesn't?), Office Space, Ace Ventura 1 & 2, Naked Gun series, and Hot Shots, to name a few.

you can add National Lampoons Christmas and Vegas Vacations to my list as well...

True point.  Office Space is the comedy that treads the fine line between stuff like Dumb and Dumber, and stuff like The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, and Punch-Drunk Love, and About Schmidt.

One that's never mentioned is Kung Pow. This thing has been on cable hundreds of times lately, and every time I pass it, I'm drawn in.

"Half Baked". It was dumb, but during my stoner days I couldn't get enough of this flick.

Sir Smokes Allot: BITCH! You know what I want. I wanna TALK TO SAMSON! Fly me to the moon like that bitch Allan Grhamson(?). Cause it's hard being black and gifted. SO I call Samson to get LIFTED.

Also, every Cheech & Chong movie. And "The Big LEbowski", which is a fucking masterpiece. And if you decide to contest my picks, well, that's just like, your opinion man.

Finally, someone who prefers Roeper. I'm surprised by how many people hate him and actually personally attack him... His taste in movies is better than Ebert's IMO. Especially when it comes to stupid fun comedies- He gave Old School thumbs up while Ebert gave it a big thumbs down.

Roeper's taste, like his personality, is something I've found to be rather immature.  Not to mention, he's rather loud-mouthed.  I like Ebert's more subdued, mature tone.  Ebert has honed his taste over years, and I've found it to be one of the most consistent and reasonable things around.  There are very few movies I disagree with him about, and, as has been said before, even when I do disagree, he always explains where he's coming from quite well.  The WHAS review shouldn't be held against him.  He was in a bad movie, sick of it, and simply conjured up a send-up to that old familiar camp song.  Like I said, it was quite creative even if it dragged on a bit.

Well let's not get into a huge debate about Ebert and Roeper, unless anyone wants to make a thread about it (which I'd be more than glad to post arguments in   ).

Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo Picked up by Sony
Source: Variety

Sony Pictures has teamed up with Adam Sandler's Happy Madison for Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo. Rob Schneider is back in the title role he originated in Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, and Eddie Griffin is expected to reprise his role as Deuce's man-pimp.

In the sequel, Deuce gets invited by his pimp to vacation in Amsterdam, only to discover that he's being pressed back into the flesh biz. Variety says the script has been a popular industry read, introducing a fresh batch of misfit female clients.

T.J. Schneider wrote the script with David Garrett, Jason Ward and Josh Lieb. Production begins later this year.

Why don't they make a sequel to The Animal instead?  That Colleen Haskell showed a lot of promise.  Seriously.

All I know is that they HAVE to bring back Amy Poehler for this.

Too many good ones to name.

1. Hot Shots Part Deux. Because the first one wasn't as good to me, and that's rare, in the way of sequels.

President Thomas 'Tug' Benson: We'll do this the old navy way. First one to die... loses!

2.  Freddy Got Fingered.  And I hate Tom Green! Hate him!  But that resturant scene is classic.

3. Half Bake.

There are other movies that I don't consider silly-stupid like "The Jerk" and "South Park: The Movie", more like classic.  8)

Finally watched it - you're dead right. Forget Apocalypse Now, forget Citizen Kane, forget Eyes Wide Shut or 2001 -- it's all about Major League. I have seen the second coming of christ and I-am-here-to-tell-you it stars Charlie Sheen and was directed by David S. Ward. This is not a joke.

Maybe more fitting for this thread, less suitable for the AFI Top 100, is Dirty Work (1998). I haven't seen it forever but the trailer cracks me up. Someone confirm.
