Does jump cut mean: 'A' is in the building then he starts to walk towards the door and then cut to: him in his car driving. is that a jump cut? can someone give me a few examples in movies?
It's a fast, unprecedented cut. But don't take my word for it -- let me pull out my film dictionary for the official definition:
"A cut between two shots that seems abrupt and calls attention to itself because of some obvious jump in time or space. An undesired jump cut is caused by poor editing, but at times the cut is consciously made for some desired effect."
i still dont get it i need an example from a movie :)
wait is it like if someone is about to get shot: cut to : kids playing?
A great example would be the scene in The Shining where Danny is looking in the mirror before they go to the Overlook, and has visions of what has happened there. Kubrick uses jump cuts throughout the movie to communicate the concept of extra-sensory perception.
what did (OC) mean i forget
What do you mean?
Sometimes a parenthetical OC will precede dialogue to specify if it's coming from Off Camera (although I think OS, for Off Screen, is more prevalent). Is that what you're talking about?
yes thanks i remember it was something like that. just like VO is voice over .
Ghosty don't reply anymore. Just let this one die. It's painful. :)

In "Requiem For A Dream", all the quick cuts of the extreme close-ups of the drugs and the drug taking, etc. would be jump cuts.
ok i get it
so, prophet, how old are u?
what the hell are you people talking about?
a jump cut is when an amount of time has been removed from a shot. example: a guy walks out of his apt and gets into his car, starts it, and drives away. this is done in one shot. in the editing, you remove pieces from this shot by, lets say, removing his trip to the car, so it would start with the guy comming out of the building then it cuts to him allready in the car because the part of him walking to it has been removed. therefore making a jump in time.
check out "a bout de souffle" or any new wave film. or music videos, they have tons of those.

well put.
isnt that kinda what i said ? " 'A' is in the building then he starts to walk towards the door and then cut to: him in his car driving."
keep ignoring me.

no because that would be 2 shots. 1 in the building of the guy walking out, then another of him driving away outside the building.
jumps cuts are also used profusely in on-camera interviews. you know when theres a cut, removing perhaps a few phrases, but its still the same shot. if theyre shooting with 2 or 3 cameras and it cuts into a closeup then thats not really the same thing
heres a little bit of talk on jump cuts (http://www.keyframe.org/txt/matchframe/)

well, i guess technically a lie is still an answer.
The scene in the beginning of The Usual Suspects when Benicio is walking down the sidewalk and the cops drive by and he turns around trying to avoid. Go watch the sequence. There are a few jump cuts there. Him walking. Officers out of the car, his hands in the air, etc.
Let's make it very simple. Since his avatar is PTA the driving scene at the beginning of Syndey (Hard Eight).
John is in the back seat the horn blows and it JUMPS to him being in the front seat. That is a JUMP CUT.
or go watch Breathless.

edited for redundancy
Any Oliver Stone film is saturated with jump cuts. Sorry to start it up again, but its true.
P.S. A guy walking out of his apartment and then cut to him in his car is two shots, and would be an elipsis, not a jump cut.
i will administer you all a final, free, five megabyte lesson

are you happy now, child
yes, teacher.
finally, the debate is over (or is it?)
So... the cut on his head was from jumping? I'm more confused now.

Like Justice Potter Stewart once said, "I know it when I see it!"
What about the tracking shot through Calvino's in Road to Perdition? The shot in which the big fella pats Michael down is the same shot as the tracking one, as evidenced in a deleted scene. They cut quite a big chunk out of it, although it doesn't seem to be a jump cut.
Anyone know if that counts as a jump cut or not?
No.
Quote from: mutinycoNo.
No it doesn't count, or no you don't know?
No, it doesn't count. There have been plenty of examples throughout this thread. A jump cut is an abrupt cut in time. The same action is taking place or it's from the same position -- only you're cutting time. It doesn't look right and calls attention to itself.
What was being described was merely a cut-away.
Thanks.
