Ok, for being a hardcore drama...a movie of feeling, passion..love, hate, death, life...circumstances and occurences...I find a lot of scenes/situations just fuckin' hilarious...even though I maybe shouldn't be laughing.
Examples:
...the whole interaction between Claudia and Jim. Okay, she is all yayed up, he catches her at a bad time...asks her out...does she quick sober up? I dig that...
...No need for elaboration: Marcie.
...the final countdown with Frank, "You requested my time and I gave it you, you called me a liar and made accusations. And you say, "If I'd known I wouldn't have asked," then it's not an attack? Well, I don't wanna be the sort of fella who doesn't keep his word. I gave you my time, Bitch. So fuck you now."
...Phil...fuck, just about anything he does. I can't help it....
Anyone else find the un-obvious humorsum within this 188 min. of sheer fuckin' bliss??? Maybe it's the irony I am smiling at, or just the great portrayal of what we call life...but for as many emotions this film presents for me...humor is not one often considered or looked about.
Jims reaction to the rap.
Fuck, I don't know, it's such a fucking great movie. I can't see how I'll ever make something as good as that...FUCK.
This doesn't belong here...so I'm sorry CW but the one thing that makes me cry in Magnolia is Lindas reaction in the pharmacy.
When Donnie drives through the glass window of the 7-11 or whatever it is. It's like, why the hell did he do that? Fuckin hilarious. His face is totally deadpan, he doesn't slam on the brakes or even react to the accident. It's great.
Absolutely, there's lots of rich little moments to make you smile.
In addition to the great ones mentioned already....
-- Phil awkwardly ordering the girlie magazines.
-- The Quiz Kid telling Solomon Solomon that he "NEEDS braces"
-- The throwaway "TV movie with Alan Thicke and Corey Haim" conversation.
-- Everything about Luis Guzman
-- Frank Mackey's warning about not letting the dogs come near him.
The difference tends to be that while there are laugh-out-loud laughs and guffaws in Boogie Nights, the humor (while readily apparent) is much more sedate in Magnolia. They are "make you smile" moments, which fit much better within the context of a grim human drama.
When our man Pat Healy says to Linda "You can't mix those up you know".
Overall, I laughed more in Magnolia than in PDL.

I will drop kick those fuckin' dogs....
Thurston (old guy in the bar) always gives me a chuckle. "You're a friend of the family I presume?" always seems to be in his own little world. "Nothing special.....just a spoke in the wheel" Keeps spitting out this irrelevent shit, quoting for the sake of quoting. I love that.

Another thing that's great about PTA, is people finding humor in different areas of his movies. ... From my perspective, I found the entire Linda angle bleak and humorless (which is fine), as I never knew when she would be having another cringe-worthy explosion. That's part of what makes her crying apology to Phil so cathartic and dramatic; she's had a really, really bad day of angry, loud confrontations. So I guess I'm saying I don't find my laughs with Linda, but I'm sure I find laughs in other parts of the movie that people wouldn't, and that's groovy!
I would agree that Magnolia has more laughs than PDL, I reckon, but it's also more than twice as long, so that's not a good comparison. ... I'd offer that while PDL has fewer total laughs than Magnolia, it certainly has a higher laughs-per-minute ratio than Magnolia. If that makes any sense.

Ha, that always gets me too.
Mackey's whole "well, if I would have known, I wouldn't have asked" thing that clockwork was talking about makes me laugh until he says the "fuck you bitch" part. That's some harsh stuff. That shuts me up.

For me, the funniest was that scene at the "Solomon Solomon". The name - Solomon Solomon - makes me laugh :P

The only thing funnier than "Solomon Solomon" is "Solomon Solomon Electronics"
The whole bar scene with the Quiz Kid is sad yet hilarious to me.
When the bartender just smiles awkwardly when the Quiz Kid confesses his love/infatuation for him.
When Stanley's father is walking down the hallway in the TV studios and getting people's names wrong. and his reaction is so obviously, "fuck.. i'm such an idiot!" and his son's a genius.
And these quotes ALWAYS get me:
"Yeah.. it's called jaywalking.."
"SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!!!"
and
"Why would I load the gun?"
"I need a 2....
...No, that's an 8."
"Glad you like my work."
I like this one because it shows that I'm not the worst blackjack player in the world. ( only the 2nd worst? )
I agree with Magali, I love the part where Phil orders the porno mags and the operator says, "Do you still want the peanut butter?" and then Phil's like, "Yeah...what?" with a chuckle, it's so great.
The whole prologue is great and so funny, and Tom Cruise's Denise the Piece speech and Lick of my Spoon speech are so friggin' brilliant, he's almost singing it.

don't forget the camel lights....
Another from me....
in the donnie bar secene..."It appears you are family.."...haha, sum might not quite get it.
"I am listening, avidly...fella."

Wow. Me too, and I never realized it. Good point.
The Marcie seen when she is just yelling and screaming obscenities.
Frank TJ Mackey's sermon & commercial.
just hearing phillip baker hall saying "jam session" cracks me up.
how about the shot right before donny gets his teeth all smashed to oblivion and then jim's telling him about a friend that he has that's a great dentist. and i also thought it was funny when donny was trying to explain to solomon that he needed braces and that other guy chime in with "no need for braces donny" and you could tell donny was getting so mad.
or when luis guzman is sitting on the chair and it totally breaks and falls out from under him... oh wait...
i laughed my ass off when they ripped the 82 sign out of that womans hands, i dont know. just how the guy takes it from her is very funny to me.

when did that happen?
During the What Do Kids Know game show, you see the audience clapping, and a woman has an Exodus 8:2 sign (or something like that). A member of the show's crew (gray jacket?) walks up and grabs it out of her hands.
I might be alone in this one. But I have a real issue with people and their need for pills to get through a day...it's no worse than a beer to get through a day, IMO. But it's accepted cause a doctor says so...duh, a doctor is also looking for a paycheck...as long as you believe there is something wrong...you will keep coming back (realize, I am only speaking of exceptions...most doctors I would like to think have a patients true conditions and health in mind...).
But, I get a kick out of when Linda goes to get her prescription:
"I hate doing this, coming here and not being able to talk..."[/size]
At first Linda is justifying her visit. As soon as that slip is signed....SNATCH....bolting out like lighining we see Linda, her purpose is served, no need to draw the explanation and justification of her visit out any longer now.
Quote from: SHAFTRThe Marcie seen when she is just yelling and screaming obscenities.
Yes... "That ain't mine!"
It truly pissed me off when people laughed at Linda's tirade in the pharmacy, though... which I thought was totally right on and triumphant, one of the highlights of the movie.
I'm guilty of laughing when Julianne Moore says "I sucked coooock" (or something like that)
the way she said it, makes me laugh.
Yeah...when she says "I sucked other men's coooocks" about to cry...it does sound a bit funny.
I myself have never been able to laugh at that piece of dialogue. While I can see how it can be humourous, it's just about impossible for me to snicker at something Moore does since she just disappears in her roles.. in that one especially, I just felt so sorry for her because she was trying to blame herself on the grounds of adultery.
Now when Guzman fights with the kids... that's fucking funny.
When it started raining frogs. I mean, WTF!?

"oh - that fucking bitch!!"
No! you stole mine, I was just gonna say that! It was priceless, though.
Also, of course, Luiz's little "That's an official rule, baby!"
And he says something like "Honey, you ain't seen trouble. Wait til next commercial."
Also, the fact that grown men would call themselves "Captain Muffy" and "Doc" makes me laugh. The only thing Muffy's missing is a lollipop.
I crack up when Frank talks about how he's on full afterburners, dodging left and right, and he's panting like a dog. What an idiot! He's so sleazy, I love it.
When Jimmy has a stroke or whatever, when he's on the ground, and he's drinking his water. AHH, the sound it makes, and the way he swallows and pads his mouth with his sleave, goodness, it's so awesome.
