i spotted one in magnolia that's pretty obvious actually, when the camera starts from birdseye view in the game show, then moves from the upper left down to behind stanley, when he pisses, is virtually identical to a shot in philadelphia. in the courtroom, the camera goes from top left down to hanks's booth on the lower right
just pointing that out, anybody else notice demme influences? pta talks about them a lot, but that's the first obvious one ive seen
well this is an obvious one, but also in magnolia, during the tj mackey interview theyre both looking into the camera like in silence of the lambs when clarice is talking to hannibal through the glass
I fucking love the way PT takes shots from Demme. I notice alot in Boogie Nights. Theres so many(that look like Demme shots to me)I wouldn't know where to begin. The scene in BN where Dirk has a party at his new home. The opening cut to that scene is a shot Demme does in Philedelphia( the camera simply moves forward toward the house very swiftly is the same thing Demme did to a buliding in Philedelphia)...not to mention the beautiful shots Demme took of Tom Hanks when he is being fired(Hanks staring into the camera: same shots used in Silence of the Lambs alot) has PT written all over it. I don't think I articulated this well, but hopefully you get what I'm saying. You can see alot of Truffuat, Scorsese and Altman in PT as well.
I also notice a little bit of Brian De Palma in PT. I've never heared, or read, him refer to De Palma as a for sure influence, but I see it. The opening shot of Boogie Nights; where it reads "boogie nights" as the clubs name - the camera tilts and moves upward where it then says "Reseda" kind of feels De Palma-ish. And you know he had to of ripped off the De Palma camera trick in Blow Out where Travolta is in his editing room and he is realizing someone has erased all his tapes(the camers circles around the room: exactly the way PT did in Boggie Nights when we first see Dirk Digglers mammoth member)...PT is a fucking genius.
Shots of Jason Robards on deathbed reminded me of shots of Tom Hanks on deathbed.
most notably in the way pta uses the zoom lens, i think theres much more demme than scorsese in that sense.
i love when he does this however in philadelphia it got to be distracting at one point
PTA rips off about 15 shots or more from Casino in Magnolia. His talent as a writer is amazing and unique, but as a director, while it is great, it can be a tad derivative.
