PTA sent it up today. This will be shown as part of the Smigel TV Show, although I'm still not quite sure when that will air. It's a black and white ditty starring Adam Sandler and is very silly.
PTA would like me to share it with everyone, but I'm not sure how? It's on a DVD-R. Is there an easy way to upload it to my site? It's only 2 1/2 minutes....
Let me know.
Thanks
Greg
Send it to Michael Wilson! Maybe he could post it in several formats! :-D
Id be willing to buy a copy of the DVD-R if somebody can put that together. I am so thrilled.
Oh man I can't wait. This better not be a joke.
new Smigel TV show?!!!!
A NEW PTA/Sandler collabo?!!!! More PTA & Sandler?!!!!! Wait a minute, more PTA, and more Sandler?!!!
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.
Quicktime?
again, this is no joke. Robert Smigel hosted a stand up concert in New York (which was taped for a tv special). PTA shot a short film to be included when shown on TV.
Quicktime would be great, but like I said, I don't know how to transfer a DVD-R to quicktime (especially since I don't have a DVD in my computer). Any help would be appreciated in terms of my options to get it up for all of you to see...

you would have to send it to someone that has a dvd drive in their computer, and then they can extract the dvd image from there, and encode it to other formats.

Assuming you have a computer equiped with a capture card and a digital camera, you can capture the DVD footage directly to your computer. Simply hook up the analogue cables(red white and yellow) from the DVD player(still in the export side, like it was going to your tv) to your camera using the cameras cable(the ones for TV export). Connect the firewire to your camera and use whatever program you use and go to capture footage the same way as you usually would. Play the DVD in your dvd player and it should play on your camera and capture on your computer. At least it does for me. If you try to record on your camera, though, it'll give you a 'record inhibited' message or something to that effect, but it doesn't stop you from capturing.
This also works for capturing footage directly from television.
hmm, yeah, i could actually do that myself with my camera! i doubt that pta sent greg a dvd with copy protection on it, so it could work.
Quote from: Jeremy BlackmanQuote from: sphinxand then they can extract the dvd image from there, and encode it to other formats.
Not easy to do.
Naah, I do it all the time. As long as the DVD isn't copy protected or region coded (and most any DVD-R will not be because the software to do so is megabucks) then it's easy.
True, with movies it's harder. Then you have to capture ANALOG via Svideo cables (shiver)... :-D
PS: The plan, when I get Greg's DVD, is to make it available online in DVD quality, Video CD quality, and multiple Windows Media formats. That should satisfy any hungry appetite.
Quote from: sphinxhmm, yeah, i could actually do that myself with my camera! i doubt that pta sent greg a dvd with copy protection on it, so it could work.
Even if its copy protected, it should work. I can capture any DVD. It only scrambles it if you try to record. If it scrambled it automatically, if you hooked up your DVD player through you VCR, it would get scrambled.

Yes... but the method with the camera would save you a lot of hassle.
With Osex, you can copy a disk image to your drive and that's lovely, unless you want to burn the disk and it's dual layered (which the majority of dvds are)... If it's dual layered, you have to rip all the files that you're gonna use and throw away the rest (menus, commentary, DTS Track, etc...) then go into DVD Studio Pro and put it back together so it will fit on a 4.7GB disk.
this whole thing sounds weird to me. are you saying that the run time is only 2 1/2 minutes??
so yeah.. where is this?
Files complete and uploaded. Watch ptanderson.com for download information.
Have patience, though. I've throttled the downloads and limited the number of users do we don't get killed with bandwidth bills.
OK, Greg has given me permission to let you guys know first... He'll put this in his news later.
The video can be viewed online now. Get it here:
Windows Media 56k Streaming Video:
http://ptanderson.com/couch.wmv
MPEG2 Video CD Quality (22.1 MB):
ftp://ptanderson.com/couch_vcd.mpg
MPEG2 DVD Quality (125 MB):
ftp://ptanderson.com/couch_dvd.mpg
DOWNLOAD NOTES:
The two MPEG movies are being transferred via anonymous FTP. The FTP server (in order to avoid massive bandwidth usage costs) is being throttled to 24 simultaneous users, and transfer speeds are throttled to 2.5k per second. The 56k Streaming Video does not have this constraint and can be viewed by hundreds of simultaneous users at maximum network speeds. So, watch the 56k version to get your fix, and then if you decide that the video is something that you really want to own for your file collection, feel free to take the time to download the whole high-quality thing. But be patient. It's going to take you awhile. This isn't a network issue. We're doing it this way on purpose so we don't get hit with hundreds of dollars worth of bandwidth fees.
If anyone would like to mirror the files, please let me know and I will get them to you.
BIG THANK YOUS TO GREG MARIOTTI AT HTTP://PTANDERSON.COM FOR GIVING XIXAX THE SCOOP ON THE FILE DOWNLOAD, AND OF COURSE TO PTA THE MAN HIMSELF FOR MAKING IT AVAILABLE TO HIS RABID FANS!
I just began my download, so I should be able to to discuss the film in... oh, 'bout 24 hours, according to my download manager.
I appreciate the opportunity to download it, though. Hope it works.
It's FTP, so if you have any connection problems, at least you can resume the download.
I have DSL, so hopefully there won't be...
i enjoyed it for what it was. short, sweet, small little gag film. it feels like it was fun to make. just a fun thing to do on the weekend when you have a set, a camera, dolly track and adam sandler lying around.
kind of annoying though I must say. I don't get it.
That last shot had me laughing for like five minutes. Seriously. It cracked me the hell up. I loved the whole thing. So subtle...and then so over the top.
Shame there be no small downloadable version for those of us with bad computers and crap connections...
Fucking fantastic. It had me laughing for a while after. Gotta love the part where he is eaten by the couch. God damn, PTA should do a full blown comedy...
I loved what Adam did with his hands after his legs shot up like that..lol...
Whoa, Sandler doing the 'retardo Sandler' thing in a PTA piece.
That was cool. Brief but cool (it is a short flick after all). I didn't get to hear it too well but loved the look.
Fave bit: Sandler's weird little dance reaction to the couch breaking (hehehehehehe)
Yeah the kung-fu "stay back couch" was brilliant!
weird.
i like that he screams like a crazy person.
it's clear that PTA has found the ultimate stoner buddy.
Pretty obvious it was a M. Hulot influence, but Sandler made it his own. Awwww. I thought it was a pretty funny skit.
For a second, I thought Sandler looked like Reed Rothchild.
Good God, he should make a whole movie just like that...
I second the Reed Rothchild thing. Maybe it was intentional..
I'm a huge PTA fan but god damn that was lame! Succumbing to a fart joke?
yeah I thought that was horrible too. whaddya expect though?
I absolutely loved it! Come on! It's only supposed to be a little funny thing...! Surely it made you laugh? I've watched it a bunch of times and the impeccable timing of it still makes me giggle like an idiot...!
Also: I don't think it was a fart joke - wasn't that just the sound of the leather sofa squeaking? Even if it was a fart: it still occured at such a weird time as to make it hardly a conventional fart joke. It's a subversive fart joke! It's the Godspeed You! Black Emperor of fart jokes...!

Absolutely. Just like the car sound effects and chicken sound effects. Probably not meant to be taken literally. (or like you said, just exaggerated leather couch squeeks)..

I think that is the single most beautiful line I have read on this entire site since I've been here. Just about as funny as the short itself, which I liked. It had its charm. It really made want to know what PTA's next project will be.
And if maybe they'd consider including
The Couch on the
PDL DVD. It would make a swell extra. That's what it would exactly perfect for.
neato...I think....

You took the thoughts right outta my head.
By the way, could anyone possibly list the dialogue that's in it (I cant hear shit on my ball-sucking computer at the moment)
If you want to see screaming done right, A.) watch Raising Arizona (Goodman coming out of the dirt..), or B.) take me to McDonalds
Just seemed to forced, and I didn't understand why his legs flew in the air. Whatever though, that's that.

There is no dialogue, just at the end when Sandler screams "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHYYYYYYYYYYY?????????!!!!!!!!" The rest is all overexaggerated foley sound effects.

Cheers, Xixax.
I laughed. Out loud.
Doesn't happen much, so for what it's worth there you go.
Not exactly clever, but good for what it is [short and stupid]. That isn't to say I was expecting something else. I got what I expected. And I enjoyed it. And then that is not to say I think it is brilliant. Which I don't. But I wasn't expecting brilliance, so...ah, fuck it. It was good for what it was, and I don't have to make excuses for nobody.
I did indeed enjoy the opening shot through the window. And for the record, the guy is good with his tracking shots. He knows how to use them, and use them well.
That is all.
Quote from: MrBurgerKingI didn't understand why his legs flew in the air.
Neither did I...that's what kinda ruined it for me I guess. I didn't really think any of it was that funny...like laugh out loud funny I mean. I was watching it on the worst quality video possible on a computer though, so it's a little weird for me to say much more. I did like the sound effects and the couch gag with him sinking into it....and most of all his costume and wig, that was the funniest part...it was the first time I could visualize sandler as and elderly man. He's always seemed like one of those guys that could never get old.
Anyway, I know it's just suppose to be silly and stupid and that it was intended for a comedy tv show...but it could have been funnier. Just my opinion. This is coming from a fan of pre-PDL Sandler...even Mr. Deeds. He's been funnier many times and he could have been funnier in this. Dumb comedy or not...I should have laughed out loud at least once watching it for 2 and a half minutes.
Thank you very much for uploading it though whoever did! Your too good to us!
The reactions to this are interesting.
I watched it on that tiny 56k WM format...I couldn't even make out Sandler's face. But the sound was great, and I could tell what was going on. I thought it was cute and clever...up until he screamed, at which point I just about fell out of my chair laughing. I showed it to my brother about five minutes ago, and he also almost fell out of my chair laughing. It's just so goofy! If I had a faster connection, I'd download the big version and put it on a DVD.
I'd say the people who laughed at Guzman falling out of his chair in P-DL also laughed at this. I personally did not laugh at Guzman falling out of his chair and did not laugh at this. Perhaps there is a connection, or perhaps there's not.
Or perhaps I need to go to Wendys?
i laughed at guzman and i laughed during this short. mr.burgerking, maybe you need to order a whopper with a side of sense of humour :-D
QuoteI thought it was cute and clever...up until he screamed, at which point I just about fell out of my chair laughing.
With the one exception of thinking it was clever, that is my exact reaction too. I thought it was cute, and then the screaming started and I laughed like a goon having sex with a mountain goat.

That's exactly what I thought. I loved the opening shot so much!!!! And how Sandler is framed in the box as he peers through the window. wonderful! The black and white worked great.
Just not my type of humor I guess. Awkward timing for me perhaps?
Hey though, I talked to someone the other day that prefers the Big Mac to the whopper. After I was done shaking my head I said F it, enjoy your Big Mac.
Whoppers are much better. The Hungry Jacks / Burger King people are much more accomodating for those wanting to ditch pickles and such also. They get my vote.

I don't think anybody expected a great deal from it but for christ sake, just because it is directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and was only created for a tv show doesn't mean that it still isn't one of the stupidest things I've ever seen. And don't call it a mini masterpiece.
Meh... I didnt like it too much, but the last shot had me laughing.
I laughed...

I just finished downloading the dvd quality mpeg (it took about 24 hours), only to find out it didn't work.
I tried it with a few different players with no success.
Has this happened to anyone else? I'm downloading the vcd quality mpeg now and hopefully that'll work.
I tried watching it in windows media player but the quality of the player is so terrible I can't even make out Adam Sandler's face. Unless I shrink it down to the size of my thumb.
Has anyone else gotten this problem? Has anyone else even downloaded the dvd quality mpeg?
Thanks.

Off to download the vcd...
i have the dvd version, and it does work, you just need to make sure your codec and players are up to date.
The scoop on the DVD version is that, well, it's for DVD.
It's a MUXed Mpeg2 high-bandwidth (>8 megabit) file. If your computer has DVD playback software that installs the codec to play back these kinds of files, then you can watch it. Otherwise, you won't be able to.
It was created so that people with DVD recorders could download the file directly, stick it in their authoring software, and burn a video DVD. The ability to play it back on a computer is more or less just a bonus.
The VCD mpeg file is the same. It's made so that you can dump it straight into Video CD authoring software and play it back on your TV from CD. More computers can play this type of file than the DVD type - even though they're technically very similar (using mpeg2 compression).
mac computers, in order to play mpeg-2, need to purchase a codec for about $20. PC's can play it if dvd playing software is installed.

i like sandler in his films and in punch-drunk, but I really wish paul doesn't make it a habit to use him as a leading man. Take "couch" for example, I would have liked to have seen Hoffman do it. As for future feature films I just don't like sandler's voice for paul's dialogue. like i said, punch-drunk was fine and all, but just try to picture sandler in magnolia, he and his voice would have completely fucked everything up.

That's like saying Jim Carrey was totally wrong for Casablanca. Don't blame PTA for what he hasn't done.

I like that Paul loves Adam (I do too), but I kinda hope that he has a smaller role in PTA's next (you know he's gonna cast Sandler again ASAP). Paul's done the big Sandler flick he wanted to (which single handedly blew the actors other films away, making them look reletavely DULL in comparison, at least thats what I think), so I dont feel any urgency for another. Wait, maybe I just want another ensemble piece, where there is shitloads of stars/characters. I really cant see him casting Sandler as a lead again in a full movie, unless he somehow has ideas to do what Scorcese did with DeNiro (the same star in different roles/genres).....Nah.
As for the 'Sandler would've fucked up 'Magnolia', its weird you said that because I was thinkin' the other day about what it could've been like if PTA cast him earlier e.g. I think he would've been a great/funny Frank TJ Mackey, a fine Donnie Smith or Jim Kurring (he's kind of an 'everyman' so I can picture him as anyone).
Finally, as for the Hoffman in 'Couch' instead, Hoffman sprung in my head while watching it, probably because I thought Sandler's costume in it was similar to Hoffman's in 'Red Dragon'.
Oh yeah, did anyone else notice that Sandler talked with a deeper voice in 'PDL's opening when he's on the phone and when talking with Lena for the first time, but as soon as Lance comes in to work, it was his normal, lighter voice again? (it was more noticable on the second viewing)
Quote from: oakmanc234I kinda hope that he has a smaller role in PTA's next (you know he's gonna cast Sandler again ASAP)
I don't think so. Each PTA movie is very different... and he's already made his Adam Sandler movie...
Sandler is not a PSH who can fit any role, and he only works as a lead... not as a part of PTA's regulars.
opera man ... the musical
I really liked it. Adam Sandler's got some hilarious body language - just watching him get from the couch to the chair is a hoot.
But I absolutely love his facial expression when he's finally getting comfortable in the chair (which I can look at as long as I like with that great "XIXAX, Baby!" banner)
Also love the lick of the hand before he reclines the chair.
The ending, though, I just didn't get. Made me laugh, but what the hell happened? His legs just... go up? Oh well, the movie's two minutes long. No use in trying to understand it - made me laugh, and that's all that matters.
indeed. Twas amazing
Ps the show is called "Night Of Too Many Stars" and its on saturday night May 31st
Peace
I didn't really think much of it.... Fun, but nothing speciel....
weird. but then i started seing it as a commercial for that 50 cent guy and it all made sence. nothing over nickel.
id like to debate the interpretions of the chicken sounds. bah.
VIDEO FILE DOWNLOAD UPDATE
For those pissing and moaning about the slow download speed of the FTP link on the PTA site, I present to you the following Video CD file link:
http://ptanderson.com/couch_vcd.mpeg
I placed it on a different network that I had access to, so the file transfer speed is no longer throttled. Leech away.
Jeremy Blackman wrote: Each PTA movie is very different... and he's already made his Adam Sandler movie... Sandler is not a PSH who can fit any role, and he only works as a lead... not as a part of PTA's regulars.
Why not, PTA made his Philip Baker Hall flick and later used him as a regular. I dont think its fair to say that Sandler cant fit any role, cause' we haven't seen him do something drastically different.......Yet.
Anyway, PTA has said that he 'PLANS' to write more roles for the Sandman ASAP and Sandler once said 'We will buddy, we will' to the prospect of future films with the PT.
I hope he keeps using Sandler.
You think he'll write a part for Sandler in his msuical, if he ever gets to that? I picture him in a kind of seedy business man - kind of like Hoffman in PDL. Just picture Sandler screaming orders at his lackees to some offbeat Michael Penn tune.

How da fuck did you make the 'XIXAX, Baby!' banner in colour?

The Ted Turner School of Black & White Film Colorization.
that was great!!!
I loved the bit where he grabbed onto the helicopter at the end.
Help! No matter what format I click on I can't seem to download Couch! I tried them all - the Windows Media said "player is selecting a runtime that is not valid for this media file type" I tried the link on the last page - but a window opened, the bottom said it was downloading, but nothing happened. I have a cable modem... Any ideas? I tried on aol and on internet explorer. thanks - Shelley :(
Wow, I seem to be disappointed by everything PTA on the first viewing since PDL came out. I found the short to interesting, but Sandler's persona is so unfunny that it would be masochistic to watch it more than once.

Shelley, download the VCD version. It plays just about everywhere:

If PTA wanted to use Adam Sandler for ALL of his films (an unlikely scenario), I'd be okay with it as long as he continued to make films that were exciting and different. I don't think of PDL as his ONE opportunity to make an "adam sandler film" any more than Boogie Nights was his ONE opportunity to make a Markie Mark film.
I think AS was great in PDL, and I can see him being used effectively as part of the PTA ensemble, right along with John C. Reilly, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Julianne Moore. All of those actors have their own styles, and all of them have something unique to contribute to PTA's films.
I think the sooner people stop thinking of PDL as something PTA had to "get out of his system," the better.
It was cute. Nothing special though.

Well said, old chap. I
just saw it and God I didn't laugh once. It sucked!!!!!
Suck THIS!
hey Xixax...I just clicked yer link...is that really you?...if so...you are goofy looking man....lol...!!! (of course, just teasin')

No offense man. But the couch bit just didn't do anything for me, that's all. :)
Has anyone else noticed that The Couch is a solid rip off of a sequence from Jacques Tati's Playtime?Despite the talents of Sandler and PTA I think the Playtime sequence is much more funny.
Don't forget Night Of Too Many Stars is on NBC tonight at 8...Couch will be airing...should be fun.
Just thought some of ya'll would like to know: 'Couch' is available on Quicktime over at Sandlers site.

What the fuck? I didn't see him grab a helicopter at the end.
When I download it, it just ends with him screaming, he seems to put his legs down, and it cuts to black with a fart sound. Is part of the movie missing when I download it?? I don't want to be missing a frame of this funny stuff.

Reference to Rusmore, dude, reference to Rushmore.
Okay, I got it, I have this feeling that PTA's friends wanted him to make a short little film with good ole Addy Sandler, and so they just did a little thing, and so, me watching this as a thing they did for a friend, I like it more now.
Which has already been stated.
(By the way: it looks glorious in Quicktime (I'd only seen the WMP crappy version).)
I also think it's cool that it was shot without sound and added in later. (I think.)

Night of Too Many Stars (ep#1958) [cc]

oops. guess i shouldve read through every post. its still odd there wasnt any notice on gregs site or any sort of ads being run on tv.

You obviously don't watch Comedy Central that much cause they ran spots for it every comercial break.
And I enjoyed it.
Yeah, too bad about that night of too many stars.
So many people who can be funny just not really putting much effort into it.
The best was the end with Lou Reed, Jack Black, Dana Carvey, Adam Sandler, and Jimmy Falon all singing Walk on the Wild Side.

and Conan
It was decent for a charity show. I enjoyed the celebrity bag footage. Clinton and OJ jokes just aren't funny anymore though.
Already listed on imdb with a bad review I might add.

Finally saw it tonight on Comedy Central...VERY FUNNY! Paul has a knack for using actors for what they're good at....putting them in the right spots. A good 5 more minutes worth of the same kind of gags would have worked for me. Its good to see that Paul doesn't take movie making *so* seriously 24/7....that he's still fucking around with stupid ideas as a goof.
